Paul's address to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20 stands at the center of an extended treatment of the internal life of the church (20.1–21.17), and constitutes Luke's last portrait of the believing community. In this section, scenes of community life (20.7–12, 17–38; 21.8–14) alternate with travel episodes (20.1–6, 13–16; 21.1–7, 15–17) to show the relationship among groups of believers scattered around the Aegean and back to Caesarea. The resulting portrait of believing communities echoes some important features of the early descriptions of community life in Jerusalem. In this larger literary context, the speech to the Ephesian elders takes on a different appearance from its usual characterization as the farewell address of Luke's hero, Paul. The speech repeatedly connects the church to God, introducing Luke's larger themes of God's plan, the action of the Holy Spirit, and the instruction of Jesus himself. These features show that the church's future, in Luke's view, has less to do with its imitation of Paul than with its relationship to the God who calls it into being.

The translation of Heb 3.14 has been a matter of dispute. The problem lies in the ambiguity of the Greek μἐτοχοι τον χριστον. Some, like Spicq, render the clause ‘we are partners with Christ’ in the sense of companionship. The meaning would be like that of τοὺς μἐόχους σου (‘your companions’) in 1.9. Others, such as Westcott, prefer ‘partakers of Christ’ in the sense of ‘having part in him’ as in the ἔπepsilon;ις μἐρôς μἐ’ ὲμον of John 13.8. Finally others, such as O. Michel, see in it an inclusive sense encompassing both companionship with and participation in Christ.

Romans 3. 1–8 is one of the most puzzling passages in the epistle. It is commonly assumed that Paul is here using the ‘diatribe’ style of contemporary philosophers. In the diatribe, arguments are put into the mouth of imaginary objectors, and the writer replies to them in the form of a dialogue. But we must confess that, if Paul is really using the diatribe style in this passage, he is using it in a very strange way. Normally, in the diatribe, the objector's point is stated briefly, and replied to in detail. But in Romans 3. 1–8, as commonly interpreted, the objections are stated in detail, and Paul's replies are brief and inadequate. Various explanations are given for this by the commentators. According to Dodd, ‘the whole argument of 3. 1–8 is obscure and feeble’ because Paul is ‘defending a poor case’. Other scholars are more charitable, saying that the questions raised by the imaginary objector are in fact adequately answered later in the epistle. But they fail to explain why Paul should state at this stage in the epistle detailed objections, to which he is either not willing or not able to give an immediate answer.

Previous reconstructions of the ‘Miracle on the Jordan River’ (Papyrus Egerton 2, 2v.6–14) are unconvincing because they lack clear parallels with known texts. This short article proposes a new transcription, based on the apparent parallels with Elisha's miracles in 2 Kings and Josephus, Jewish War 4.460–4. It concludes that the author of the Egerton Gospel used Elisha typology in the depiction of Jesus’ miracle on the Jordan.

Since Joachim Jeremias' Jesu Verheissung für die Völker (1956) it has often been assumed that in Matt 8.11–12 Jesus looked forward to the inclusion of gentiles into the kingdom at the eschaton. However, several recent studies, most notably by Dale C. Allison, have called this view into question and have instead advocated that the logion refers to the regathering of the Diaspora. The purpose of this study is to evaluate Allison's arguments and to propose that a gentile reference is implicit in the logion based on: (1) the broader context of the inter-textual echoes of passages concerning the regathering of Jewish exiles; and (2) a wider ethnic membership for those who participate in the patriarchal banquet based on the reference to ‘Abraham’. Furthermore, the logion is interpreted in the historical Jesus' ministry through the lens of a partially realized eschatology. As such the saying represents Jesus' contention that Israel's restoration was already becoming a reality and that gentiles were already entering the kingdom as an embryonic foretaste of their inclusion at the eschaton.

Im Unterschied zu 2 Thess 2.2 ist 2 Thess 2.15 als direkter Hinweis auf die—nach Meinung des Verfassers—‘richtige’ Paulus-Lehre, d.h. den 1 Thess oder den vorliegenden 2 Thess, zu verstehen. Mit dieser These schlägt der Artikel zugleich eine differenzierte Typologie der paulinischen und pseudo-paulinischen Diskurse vor.

The use of συντɛλέω to speak of God's ‘completion’ of the new covenant (Heb 8.8) has generated various explanations. Yet none of them factor in an important clue in Hebrews, namely, the rest discourse. By establishing literary and theological connections between Heb 3.7–4.13 and 8.8–12, this study argues that the promise of the completion of the new covenant evokes the completion of creation and its ensuing sabbath rest. Such an evocation brings to surface a logic of Christology and new creation embedded in Hebrews.

Soon after the death of Dr Erwin Preuschen in 1920, the publishers of his Vollständiges Griechisch-Deutsches Handwörterbuch zu den Schrzften des N. T.s und der übrigen Urchthtlichen Literatur (Töpelmann; Giessen, 1910) approached Professor Walter Bauer of Göttingen with the proposal that he adopt the orphaned lexicon, which by this time was out of print, and produce a much-needed new revised edition of it.

1970 erschien von Klaus Koch, Professor für Altes Testament und Altorientalische Religionsgeschichte an der Universität Hamburg, eine Monographie mit dem Titel: ‘Ratlos vor der Apokalyptik’. Im Untertitel bestimmt der Autor näher der Zweck und das Ziel seiner Darlegungen: ‘Eine Streitschrift über ein vernachlässigtes Gebiet der Bibelwissenschaft und die schädlichen Auswirkungen auf Theologie und Philosophie’. Klaus Koch ist der Überzeugung, daß bei den Exegeten ‘ein tieferes geschichtliches Bewußtsein‘ nur ‘selten vorhanden sei, wenn sie über die Apokalyptik positiv oder negativ handeln‘. Dieser Zustand sie unhaltbar und um ihn zu ändern, lege er nicht einen ‘neutralen Forschungsbericht’ vor, sondern – wie er ausdrücklich betont – eine ‘Streitschrift’ die zu Änderungen reizen will, und sei es durch Widerspruch.

Die Untersuchungen über die Entstehung der Evangelien müssen vor allem das Markusevangelium beachten, weil es nach der Zweiquellentheorie die bedeutendste Vorlage der beiden übrigen Synoptiker ist und weil die ganze Gruppe der urchristlichen Schriften, die man heute Evangelien nennt, durch das Markusevangelium beeinflußt ist. Das Markusevangelium wird in den Beiden Dimensionen untersucht, durch die die einzelnen literarischen Texte mit den breiteren Bezugssystemen verbunden sind: entstehungsgeschichtlich (syntagmatisch) und in der paradigmatischen Dimension, d.h. in den Assoziationen, die seine Lektüre erweckt und in den Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschieden seiner Struktur im Vergleich mit anderen Texten. Daß man auf solche komplexe Weise vorgehen muß, ist zum Konsensus geworden. In der Methode und in den konkreten Ergebnissen gibt es jedoch viele offene Fragen und Widersprüche. Von den früheren Beiträgen ausgehend3möchte ich jetzt einige Konsequenzen für die Methode ziehen und neue Beobachtungen hinzufügen, die m.E. für die Auslegung der Evangelien und für das Verständnis ihrer Funktion von Bedeutung sind.

Davor muß jedoch eine Mitteilung zum Bestand der neutestamentlichen Papyri gestellt werden, die nicht nur den Fachmann überraschen wird; und zwar—das ist die Pointe daran—in Fortsetzung des in N.T.S. ix, 309 unter Nr. 3 dieses Berichtes Ausgeführten. Damals hatte ich mitzuteilen, daß; P67 in Barcelona und p64 in Oxford zusammengehörten, eine Identifikation, die C. H. Roberts zu verdanken war. Die Ursache für die Doppelnumerierung war, daß die Fotos der Fragmente mit verschiedenen Maßstäben und unter anderen Bedingungen aufgenommen worden waren. Zwar schrieb ich damals: ‘Die Zahl wie der Umfang der uns inzwischen bekannt gewordenen Papyri und Papyrus-Fragmente ist inzwischen so groß geworden, daß die Wahrscheinlichkeit zunimmt, daß neu auftauchende neutestamentliche Papyri nur eine Ergänzung schon vorhandener bekannter bedeuten.’ Aber auch ich hielt es doch nicht für möglich, daß dieser Fall auch für die schon in der Liste befindlichen gelten könnte. Aber es scheint doch so und betrifft dazu ausgerechnet den schon einmal zusammengefügten $64+67! Wenn nicht alle Anzeichen trügen,1 gehört nämlich dieser Doppelpapyrus zum seit 1892 bekannten $4 in Paris. Letzte Gewißheit wird sich nur beim Vergleich der Originale ergeben. Denn zumindest beim Fragment in Oxford, das ich in der Hand gehabt habe, dem Foto nach aber auch bei den Fragmenten in Barcelona, ist der Papyrus von heller Farbe.

We may begin our analysis of the synoptic tradition peculiar to Luke with a study of one of its most important component parts, namely that preserved in the fifteenth chapter. The whole of this chapter constitutes a single literary unit, whose beginning and end are well defined and whose internal structure, while not uniform, is perfectly self-consistent. The introduction to this literary unit points to the ‘grumbling’ of the Pharisees and Scribes in response to Jesus' behaviour of receiving and eating with those tax collectors and sinners who had come to hear him. This response of the Pharisees and Scribes occasions a threefold response from Jesus, namely a threefold insistence upon the single point that it is right to accept the repentance of sinners and to rejoice with them, since their repentance is accepted by God who himself in heaven rejoices over their return.
