The crystal structure of Na4[Cu4O2(SO4)4] MeCl (Me: Na,Cu,☐) has been solved by direct methods and refined to R1 = 0.028 using 2466 independent reflections. The compound is tetragonal with space group P4/n, a = 18.451(1)Å, c = 4.9520(2)Å, Z = 4. The two main building units running parallel to the c-axis comprise: (1) slabs containing SO4 and OCu4 tetrahedra; and (2) chains of corner sharing Me(Cl,O)6 octahedra. The displacement ellipsoids of the atoms occupying the Me sites and of the Cl ions indicate a short-range static disorder. Copper in the slabs exhibits a (4+1) coordination. Both elements form a tunnel structure in which additional Na atoms are incorporated for charge compensation. The structure is closely related to the mineral piypite (K4Cu4O2(SO4)4 MeCl (Me: Na,Cu,☐)): . Furthermore, the structure has a pronounced pseudo-translational symmetry: apart from some of the oxygen sites, all of the nineteen crystallographically distinct positions are related by a pseudo F centring.

The new mineral russoite (IMA2015-105), NH4ClAs23+O3(H2O)0.5, was found at the Solfatara di Pozzuoli, Pozzuoli, Napoli, Italy, as a fumarolic phase associated with alacránite, dimorphite, realgar, mascagnite, salammoniac and an amorphous arsenic sulfide. It occurs as hexagonal plates up to ~300 µm in diameter and 15 µm thick, in rosette-like intergrowths. On the basis of powder X-ray diffraction measurements and chemical analysis, the mineral was recognised to be identical to the corresponding synthetic phase NH4ClAs2O3(H2O)0.5. Crystals are transparent and colourless, with vitreous lustre and white streak. Tenacity is brittle and fracture is irregular. Cleavage is perfect on {001}. The measured density is 2.89(1) g/cm3; the calculated density is 2.911 g/cm3. The empirical formula, (based on 4.5 anions per formula unit) is [(NH4)0.94,K0.06]Σ1.00(Cl0.91,Br0.01)Σ0.92As2.02O3(H2O)0.5. Russoite is hexagonal, space group P622, with a = 5.2411(7), c = 12.5948(25) Å, V = 299.62(8) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 12.63(19)(001), 6.32(100)(002), 4.547(75)(100), 4.218(47)(003), 3.094(45)(103), 2.627(46)(110), 2.428(31)(112) and 1.820(28)(115). The structure, was refined to R = 0.0518 for 311 reflections with I > 2σ(I) and shows a different location of the ammonium cation and water molecules with respect to that reported for the synthetic analogue. The mineral belongs to a small group of phylloarsenite minerals (lucabindiite, torrecillasite and gajardoite). It contains electrically neutral As2O3 layers, topologically identical to those found in lucabindiite and gajardoite between which are ammonium cations and outside of which Cl– anions. Water molecules and additional ammonium cations are located in a layer between two levels of chloride anions.

The chemical compositions of eighty granitic rocks from the Lewisian of the North-West Highlands of Scotland, particularly from the Gairloch district, are set out in relation to geological occurrence and their normative proportions of albite, orthoclase, quartz, and anorthite compared with experimental data relating to the systems NaAlSi3O8-KAlSi3O8-SiO2-H2O and KAlSi3O8-NaAlSi2O8-CaAl2Si2O8-SiO2. The field of composition for these Lewisian rocks moves from Ab-Q-rich for autochthonous granites to Ab = Or = Q (approximately) for parautochthonous granites to Or-rich for intrusive granites. This trend is related to the varying roles of mineral solubility under stress, selective melting, and potassium metasomatism.

In Part I of this paper the actual frequency-distribution of igneous rocks as revealed by the latest edition of Washington's collection of analyses was examined, and compared with that of earlier records. An attempt wilt now be made to determine the law of this distribution–a necessary preliminary to any petrogenic application of the results. The silica frequency will be considered since this has been found to give a curve more characteristic of igneous rocks than does any other oxide Now Dr. Harker pointed out that the silica distribution of records published in 1903 did not obey any simple law such as that of the probability curve, and the same conclusion applies to the collection of 1917. However, when the empirical method of Karl Pearson was applied to analyse the curve into component curves of error, fairly simple conclusions resulted.

An X-ray examination of the type specimen of stokesite gave a 14·41, b 11·61, c 5·23 Å.; space-group Pnna. The unit cell contains 4[CaSnSi3O11H4] and is derived from Hutchinson's morphological unit by the transformation [010/001/100]. X-ray powder data are given.

Nacrite is the rarest member of the kaolin group of minerals. The name was first applied by Brongniart in 1807 to a mineral (talc granuleux of Haüy, 1801) the properties of which were not then adequately described. In 1832 Breithaupt recorded a mineral from an ore vein near Freiberg in Saxony, which has since been called nacrite. In the past, however, 'nacrite' has been applied quite frequently to different nacreous and micaceous minerals, not necessarily of kaolin composition, and the authenticity of the species was not definitely established until 1931 when Ross and Kerr, on the basis of an X-ray study of nacrite from the locality Brand near Freiberg in Saxony, proved the mineral to be a distinct species of the kaolin group.

The a-, σ- and π-spectra of quartz in the IR regions were measured under FTIR spectroscopy, and overtone and combination modes perpendicular to the c-axis of quartz were confirmed to be electric vector active by the coincidence of the a-spectrum with the σ-spectrum among the three kinds of spectra. Absorption coefficients of overtone and combination modes intrinsic to the a- σ-, and п-spectra of quartz were measured. The thickness of quartz thin sections can be determined by applying the absorption coefficients obtained from the α- and σ-spectra to the polarized IR absorption spectra measured under E ⊥ the c-axis.

Gyrolite containing no detectable Al (<0.04 wt.%) has been found as aggregates of platey crystals to 6 mm at Dean Quarry, the Lizard, Cornwall. The gyrolite occurs embedded in calcite which fills a fracture vein in gabbro. Paragenetic evidence is inconclusive, but suggests that gyrolite formed relatively early, after prehnite, and possibly around the same time as analcime and natrolite.

Högbomite, a complex oxide of A1, Fe, Mg, and Ti, is an important constitutent of some iron ores and emery deposits as well as an infrequent accessory in aluminous high-grade rocks (e.g. Grew et al., 1987). The recent increase in reports of new localities (e.g. Rammlmair et al.,1988) suggests that högbomite may be more widespread than is generally perceived. We report here högbomite from the Aldan Shield, Eastern Siberia. This högbomite is remarkable for the wide variation in composition measured in a single thin section. Our report is only the second from the USSR of högbomite for which chemical data are given.

This paper presents the nomenclature of the rhodonite group accepted by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). An overview of the previous studies of triclinic (space group P$\bar{1}$) pyroxenoids belonging to the rhodonite structure type, with a focus on their crystal chemistry, is given. These minerals have the general structural formula VIIM(5)VIM(1)VIM(2)VIM(3)VIM(4)[Si5O15]. The following dominant cations at the M sites are known at present: M(5) = Ca or Mn2+, M(1–3) = Mn2+; and M(4) = Mn2+ or Fe2+. In accordance with the nomenclature, the rhodonite group consists of three IMA-approved mineral species having the following the general chemical formulae: M(5)AM(1–3)B3M(4)C[Si5O15], where A = Ca or Mn2+; B = Mn2+; and C = Mn2+ or Fe2+. The end-member formulae of approved rhodonite-group minerals are as follows: rhodonite CaMn3Mn[Si5O15]; ferrorhodonite CaMn3Fe[Si5O15]; and vittinkiite MnMn3Mn[Si5O15].

Barium melilite – bennesherite, Ba2Fe2+Si2O7, known only from pyrometamorphic rocks of the Hatrurim Complex in Israel, has been recognised in a carbonate–silicate xenolith from the Bellerberg volcano area in Germany. The empirical formula of the German specimen is as follows: (Ba1.32Ca0.43Sr0.23Na0.05K0.02)Σ2.05(Fe2+0.79Ti0.06Mg0.05Al0.04Mn0.03Zn0.01)Σ0.98Si1.97O7. The Raman spectrum of bennesherite exhibits the presence of the main vibrations related to Fe2+O4 tetrahedra and disilicate Si2O7 groups at the T1 and T2 sites, at 589 cm–1 and in the range 618–673 cm–1, respectively. Detailed spectroscopic analyses performed for bennesherite in two different and random orientations confirm the reduction of bands intensity and the number of some components in several spectral ranges. Moreover, the presence of a heavy Ba atom indicates a decrease in band frequencies compared to melilites with Ca at the X position. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiment, despite attempts, could not be carried out due to the poor quality and small size of the bennesherite crystals however, a combination of composition and Raman data allowed for accurate phase identification. Detailed mineralogical investigations distinguished rare Ba minerals in association with bennesherite, such as walstromite, fresnoite and celsian, along with various ferrous melilites. Some of the detected phases are described from xenoliths of the Bellerberg volcano for the first time. The uniqueness of the Bellerberg volcano mineralisation is reflected in the interaction of alkaline magma with xenoliths of different compositions, which suggests that this locality still deserves attention as a source of new and unique minerals.

New guidelines for the nomenclature of polymorphs and polysomes have been approved by the the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA–CNMNC). Several cases can be distinguished. (i) Polymorphs with different crystal systems are distinguished by the prefixes cubo- (cubic), hexa- (hexagonal), tetra- (tetragonal), trigo- (trigonal), ortho- (orthorhombic), clino- (monoclinic) and anortho- (triclinic). (ii) Polymorphs with different crystal systems but showing a pseudosymmetry should show the prefix ‘pseudo-’. (iii) Polymorphs with the same crystal system but different space groups are distinguished by the prefix ‘para-’. If three or more polymorphs show the same crystal system but different space groups, the space group notation may be added as a suffix, though such a nomenclature should be avoided if possible. (iv) Polymorphs with the same space group are distinguished by the prefix ‘para-’. (v) Minerals with polymorph suffixes but with different chemical compositions cannot be considered as true polymorphs, so we recommend using the prefix ‘meta-’, which indicates a close but significantly different chemical composition. (vi) Polysomatic symbols should be placed as a suffix, which indicates the number and types of modules that alternate in the structure, such as in the högbomite supergroup, or as prefixes as in the sartorite homologous series. These recommendations have to be applied for future new mineral proposals, when the authors decide to use structural prefixes or suffixes, however modifications of historical and well-established names have to pass through the CNMNC for approval. In order to be consistent with the new guidelines, 25 mineral names are now modified: domeykite-β becomes trigodomeykite; fergusonite-(Y)-β becomes clinofergusonite-(Y); fergusonite-(Ce)-β becomes clinofergusonite-(Ce); fergusonite-(Nd)-β becomes clinofergusonite-(Nd); ice-VII becomes cubo-ice; roselite-β becomes anorthoroselite; sulphur-β becomes clinosulphur; mertieite-II becomes mertieite; mertieite-I becomes pseudomertieite; uranophane-α becomes uranophane; uranophane-β becomes parauranophane; gersdorffite-P213 becomes gersdorffite; gersdorffite-Pa3 becomes paragersdorffite; gersdorffite-Pca21 becomes orthogersdorffite; betalomonosovite becomes paralomonosovite; lammerite-β becomes paralammerite; nováčekite-I becomes hydronováčekite; nováčekite-II becomes nováčekite; halloysite-7Å becomes halloysite; halloysite-10Å becomes hydrohalloysite; metauranocircite-I becomes metauranocircite; taimyrite-I becomes taimyrite; uranocircite-II becomes uranocircite; andorite IV becomes quatrandorite; and andorite VI becomes senandorite.

Hitachiite, Pb5Bi2Te2S6, is a new mineral discovered in the Hitachi mine, located in the Ibaraki Prefecture of Japan. The mean of 21 electron microprobe analyses gave: Pb 52.01, Bi 23.06, Fe 0.69, Sb 0.17, Te 13.74, S 9.71, Se 0.54, total 100.04 wt.%. The empirical chemical formula based on 15 apfu is (Pb4.75Fe0.23)Σ4.98(Bi2.09Sb0.03)Σ2.12Te2.04(S5.73Se0.13)Σ5.86, ideally Pb5Bi2Te2S6. Synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments indicated that hitachiite has trigonal symmetry, space group P${\bar 3}$m1, with a = 4.2200(13) Å, c = 27.02(4) Å and Z = 1. The four strongest diffraction peaks shown in the powder X-ray pattern [d, Å (I)(hkl)] are: 3.541(35)(012), 3.391(59)(013), 3.039(100)(015) and 2.114(56)(110). The calculated density (Dcalc) for the empirical chemical formula is 7.54 g/cm3.

The crystal structure of hitachiite has been refined using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, to R = 7.38% and is based on ABC-type stacking of 15 layers (five Pb, two Bi, two Te, and six S layers) along the [001] direction, and with each layer ideally containing only one kind of atom. The stacking sequence is described as Te–Bi–S–Pb–S–Pb–S–Pb–S–Pb–S–Pb–S–Bi–Te. The discovery of hitachiite implies that the minerals of the Bi2Te2S–PbS join might form a homologous series of Bi2Te2S·nPbS.

Tolstykhite, ideally Au3S4Te6, is a new mineral from the Gaching ore occurrence of the Maletoyvayam deposit, Kamchatka peninsula, Russia. It occurs as individual anhedral grains up to 0.05 mm or as intergrowths with native Se, native Te and tripuhyite. Other associated minerals include calaverite, fischesserite, Cu–Te-rich ‘fahlores' [stibiogoldfieldite, ‘arsenogoldfieldite', tennantite-(Cu), tetrahedrite-(Zn)], galena, gold, maletoyvayamite, minerals of famatinite–luzonite series, pyrite, baryte, ilmenite, magnetite, quartz and V-bearing rutile. Tolstykhite is bluish-grey, opaque with metallic lustre and grey streak. It is brittle and has an uneven fracture. Cleavage is good on {010} and {001}. Dcalc = 7.347 g/cm3. In reflected light, tolstykhite is grey with a bluish shade. No bireflectance, pleochroism and internal reflections are observed. In crossed polars, it is weakly anisotropic with bluish to brownish rotation tints. The reflectance values for wavelengths recommended by the Commission on Ore Mineralogy of the International Mineralogical Association are (Rmin/Rmax, %): 32.6/34.3 (470 nm), 32.4/34.1 (546 nm), 32.6/34.5 (589 nm) and 33.0/35.0 (650 nm). The Raman spectrum of tolstykhite contains the main bands at 297, 203, 181, 151 and 127 cm–1. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 13 atoms per formula unit is (Au2.98Ag0.01)Σ2.99(S3.59Se0.41)Σ4.00Te6.01. Tolstykhite is triclinic, space group P$\bar{1}$, a = 8.977(5), b = 9.023(2), c = 9.342(6) Å, α = 94.03(3), β = 110.03(3), γ = 104.27(4)°, V = 679.0(3) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 8.59 (18) (010); 2.90 (100) (0$\bar{1}$3); 2.23 (13) (13$\bar{3}$); 1.89 (21) (13$\bar{4}$). Tolstykhite is the S-analogue of maletoyvayamite, Au3Se4Te6. The structural identity between them is confirmed by powder XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The mineral honours Russian mineralogist Dr. Nadezhda Dmitrievna Tolstykh for her contributions to the mineralogy of gold and platinum-group elements and the study of ore deposits.

Examples of apparent exsolution lamellae and lenticular blebs of chalcopyrite in pyrrhotite are described in orthopyroxene-bearing granulite facies rocks from two, oxidized (log10fO2 = −14 to −11), widely separated, well characterized high grade terranes: the Bamble Sector, SE Norway (795°C, 7.5 kbar) and the Shevaroy Hills Massif, Tamil Nadu, S India (750°C, 7.5 kbar). These exsolution features only occur in isolated pyrrhotite grains and not in integral pyrrhotite-pyrite-chalcopyrite-magnetite grain clusters which essentially represent an oxidation equilibrium. Reintegration of these chalcopyrite exsolution features back into the pyrrhotite host indicate Cu contents ranging from 1 to 5 wt.% in good agreement with experimental observations which indicate that pyrrhotite can take up to 7 wt.% Cu at temperatures above 800°C at pressures of ∼1 bar. This suggests that under high grade conditions these chalcopyrite exsolution features were in solid solution with pyrrhotite. Whether Cu stabilizes pyrrhotite at higher oxygen fugacities or these chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite grains represent a metastable phase is uncertain. One possibility is that the isolated pyrrhotite grains with chalcopyrite lamellae could represent grains that were preferentially not exposed to infiltrating fluids, which oxidized the pyrrhotites in other areas of the sample. A second possibility is that either these grains had enough Cu to stabilize them during pervasive infiltration of oxidizing fluids or that they represent a metastable phase with respect to the overall oxygen fugacity of the sample. The two conclusions that can be drawn from these observations are, firstly, that it is possible for pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite to form a limited solid solution at granulite facies temperatures and pressures under relatively high oxidizing conditions, i.e. 1.5 log units above fayalite-magnetite-quartz, at 800°C and 8 kbar. Secondly, this limited solid solution should have some bearing on the stability of pyrrhotite with respect to co-existing magnetite and pyrite as a function of the oxidation state of the rock, be it inherited or fluid induced.

The Miocene, epithermal, Ag-rich polymetallic Santo Toribio deposit is hosted by the volcanics of the Quiruvilva-Pierina subbelt, Northern Peru, which also comprises the world-class, high sulphidation Pierina deposit. The Ag-rich, alabandite-bearing veins of the Santo Toribio deposit formed during two major stages. The early stage is characterized by deposition of arsenopyrite, pyrite, quartz, Mn- sphalerite, stannite, alabandite and minor miargyrite. Sphalerite associated with this stage is exceptionally enriched in Mn (up to 14.5 wt.%) and alabandite is optically and mineralogically zoned. Its brown zones have greater Fe+Sb and smaller Mn contents than the green zones and Fe+Sb replaces Mn in its structure. During this early stage, fs2 must have been high to allow the stabilization of alabandite relative to rhodochrosite. In the second stage, the physicochemical conditions changed and the CO2/S ratio increased, causing dissolution of alabandite and the deposition of abundant rhodochrosite and a second generation of arsenopyrite, pyrite and quartz, sphalerite with chalcopyrite inclusions, mirargyrite, ramdohrite, and finally stibnite. This polymetallic ore probably formed due to an abrupt decrease in H+ and/or Cl- concentration caused by boiling or dilution of the high-salinity hydrothermal fluids and constitutes an example of “intermediate sulfidation-state” epithermal deposits.

Coarse-grained mertieite-II [Pd8(Sb,As)3] crystals (up to 2.5 mm across) with inclusions of sperrylite and intergrown with keithconnite [Pd3(Te,Bi)], cooperite-braggite, a Pt-Pd-Hg alloy, a (Pd,Pt)9Te phase and Au-Ag alloy occur in alluvial sediments in the Darya river, Aldan Shield, Russia. The primary PGM assemblage underwent alteration with formation of a very fine-grained mixture of Pd-bearing oxides and hydrated oxides. The Pd oxide/hydrated oxide aggregates (up to 100 μm wide and ~1 mm long) occur along crystallographic planes, on grain boundaries and fractures, occasionally intergrown with goethite. The Pd-O-bearing compounds formed after (1) mertieite-II (Sb content reaches 23 wt.%), (2) keithconnite (variably enriched in Te, up to 7 wt.% and Bi, up to 6 wt.%) and (3) potarite (with high Hg content, up to 35 wt.%). The variably oxidized and hydrated PGM assemblage can be attributed to supergene alteration and small-scale element redistribution under cool climatic conditions with a limited degree of leaching.

In support of the disposal system safety case for a geological disposal facility (GDF) there is a requirement to consider 'what-if' hypothetical scenarios for post-closure nuclear criticality. Although all such scenarios are considered very unlikely, one 'what-if' scenario is the mobilization of fissile material from a number of waste packages and its slow accumulation within the GDF or the immediate surroundings. Should sufficient fissile material accumulate a quasi-steady-state (QSS) transient criticality event could result. A computer model has been developed to understand the evolution and consequences of such an event.

Since a postulated QSS criticality could persist for many millennia, building confidence in the modelling approach is difficult. However, the Oklo natural reactors in Africa operated for similar durations around two billion years ago, providing a natural analogue for comparison. This paper describes the modelling approach, its application to hypothetical criticality events for a GDF, and how the model can be compared to Oklo. The model results are found to be in agreement with the observational evidence from Oklo, building confidence in the use of the QSS model to simulate postulated post-closure criticality events in GDFs.
