Experiments have been performed at the Central Laser Facility, Rutherford Appleton Lab., UK. using novel techniques in which laser produced plasmas have been diagnosed by measurements of the charged thermonuclear reaction products. Two types of experiment are being reported here. Firstly, thermonuclear alpha particles from an exploding pusher target have been used to determine the growth of the Rayleigh–Taylor instability in a separate laser driven planar foil. The resulting alpha particle range loss distributions provide a direct measurement of the foil thickness distribution and hence the instability. The R–T instability has been observed in a number of foils with range losses varying between almost zero to over lOμm. Secondly, a thermonuclear particle backlighting technique has been used in the measurement of the stopping power of hot plasma for different materials. The ratio of plasma stopping power to that of the cold material is measured and compared to a value obtained from theoretical modelling. The solid state nuclear track detector CR–39 has been used as a diagnostic for these experiments. A sophisticated image analysis system has been developed to enhance and improve data recovery.

In the present analysis we study the time dependent, self-consistent propagation of nonlinear electromagnetic pulses in plasmas. Interactions of the electromagnetic pulses and wakefields are fully taken into account, from which one obtains accurate information on pulse time dependent dynamics and stability. While wide pulses may or may not retain the localized shape depending on their power, narrower pulses always tend to delocalize as time evolves.

Light ion beams for the energy drive for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) research have been studied on a super high voltage generation system (SHVS) using an inductive voltage adder system. A simple analysis implied the capability of the output voltage of several tens of MV. This system has a feasibility of acceleration of ions heavier than proton. The two-stage charge stripping ion diode is considered a SHVS diode. This diode reduces the size of the induction adder module and extends the possible power range in operation. We have constructed a prototype SHVS, which consists of eight stages of induction cavities (4MV, 40kA, 100ns) powered by a Reiden IV pulse power machine. The first ion diode experiments on the induction adder were performed with the beam extraction type ion diode (Br applied magnetic field). The injection plasma ion source was used to control the diode impedance and then the diode voltage. The time delay of ion current turn-on was reduced from 15–20 ns to less than 5 ns by this ion source.

We investigated a dynamic procedure for relativistic channeling by a linearly polarized ultraintense laser pulse in overdense plasma, subsequently determining a phenomenological formula for the channel-digging speed. Channeling of the linearly polarized pulse usually results in a sharp-cut (non-adiabatic) pulse front, since the pulse is continuously reflected on the transparency-opacity interface during the channeling process. Using the novel formula for the channel-digging speed, it was possible to analytically predict where such a sharp-cut occurs longitudinally.

Rare gas or lead clusters of several hundreds to many thousands of atoms per cluster were irradiated by intense laser pulses producing peak intensities up to 1017W/cm2. Fast, highly charged fragment ions were observed by means of standard TOF mass spectrometry as well as a magnetic deflection TOF device (MDTOF). Charge states of up to Xe30+ or Pb18+ were detected with maximum kinetic energies reaching far beyond 100 keV for Xe. A strong dependence of the charging and heating process on the laser pulse duration was found. While the resulting ionic fragment spectra are qualitatively similar for rare gas and lead clusters, the kinetic energies for the metal clusters seem to be significantly lower.

A steady-state analytical model is used to calculate the operational parameters of a coaxial-type, self-magnetically insulated ion-beam diode, called a plasma focus diode (PFD). The electrons are described by nonlaminar flow with a constant radial density distribution instead of the density profile determined self-consistently by one-dimensional laminar flow. The calculated results were compared with the experimental results obtained at the peak power, and good agreement was obtained between them. From the theoretical understanding of the PFD we obtained the scaling relations of diode impedance and the ion-current efficiency and used them to discuss the possible ways to increase the coupling efficiency and the ion-current efficiency and to reduce the instabilities in the diode operation.

We have measured multi-keV protons and ∼100 keV iodine ions from the interaction of intense, femtosecond laser pulses with atomic Xe clusters and mixed-species HI clusters. The explosion dynamics of the HI clusters differs from the pure H and I cluster cases, with the iodine energies being substantially reduced. Mixed-species clusters provide a possible route for boosting the explosion energies of low-Z ions, and extend the advantages of the laser-cluster interaction to species that do not readily form pure clusters.

In this paper, we study the excitation of Gould–Trivelpiece (TG) waves by streaming ions in dusty plasma and derive the dispersion relation of the excited waves using first-order perturbation theory. The motion of charged particles is controlled by electromagnetic fields in plasma. The energy transfer processes which occur in this collisionless plasma are believed to be based on wave–particle interactions. We have found that the TG waves may be generated in a streaming ion plasma via Cerenkov interaction, and the ions may be accelerated by TG waves via cyclotron interaction, which enable energy and momentum transfer. The variation in the growth rate of TG wave with dust grain size and relative density of negatively charged dust grains is also studied. The dust can cause an unstable TG mode to be stable in Doppler resonance, and can induce an instability in Cerenkov interaction.

Detailed experiments on the energy and angular distributions of both electrons and protons formed from molecular hydrogen in strong femtosecond laser fields are reported. At the wavelengths 389 and 406 nm the ionization dynamics is governed by resonance shifting of molecular Rydberg states. Differences from this mechanism appear only at the very lowest intensities, when close lying resonances of the E, F-state determine the photoelectron pattern in resonant enhanced ionization, and at very high intensities, when tunnel ionization suppresses molecular details. At wavelengths below 400 nm at intensities in the range of ≈1·1013 W/cm2 femtosecond pulses are quite suitable for preparation of state selected H2+ targets in a restricted range of vibrational levels.

For very high intensity accelerators, not only beam power but also space charge is a concern. Both aspects should be taken into consideration for any analysis of accelerators aiming at comparing their performances and pointing out the challenging sections. As high beam power is an issue from the lowest energy, careful and exhaustive beam loss predictions have to be done. High space charge implies lattice compactness making the implementation of beam diagnostics very problematic, so a clear strategy for beam diagnostic has to be defined. Beam halo is no longer negligible. Its dynamics is different from that of the core and plays a significant role in the particle loss process. Therefore, beam optimization must take the halo into account and beam characterization must be able to describe the halo part in addition to the core one. This paper presents the advanced concepts and methods for beam analysis, beam loss prediction, beam optimization, beam diagnostic, and beam characterization especially dedicated to very high intensity accelerators. Examples of application of these concepts are given in the case of the IFMIF accelerators.

A new method of experimental measurement of the imploded mass of laser-imploded shell targets is proposed. This method is based on simultaneous measurements of the velocity spectrum of the neutral atom flux emitted from the imploded part of the target, and the total energy carried by them. A semiconductor diode with a shallowly located p – n junction was used as the low energy neutral particle detector. By means of the time of flight method neutral atom fluxes with velocities υ ∼ (0·6 − 1·8) × 107cm/s were registered in experiments carried out on the 6-beam laser system “Delfin”.

Two shells with the diameter of 0.8–0.9 mm and a wall thickness of ≅1 μm were produced at the Lebedev Physics Institute for the experiments conducted at the ISKRA-5 facility. The results of two experiments with the aforementioned shells conducted at the ISKRA-5 facility with the use of an indirect-drive set up. In one of the experiments, the diameter of the golden hohlraum was D = 2 mm while in the other it was D = 4 mm. In these experiments it was observed to be ≅4 times the difference of the average laser intensity on the hohlraum surface. The results of computational analysis of the experiments are also presented here.

This paper presents a scheme for beat wave excitation of an electron plasma wave (EPW) by cross-focusing of two intense cosh-Gaussian (ChG) laser beams in an under dense collisional plasma. The plasma wave is generated on account of beating of two ChG laser beams of frequencies ω1 and ω2. Starting from Maxwell's equations, coupled differential equations governing the evolution of spot size of laser beams with distance of propagation have been derived by using Moment theory approach in Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin approximation. The collisional nonlinearity depends not only on the intensity of first laser beam, but also on that of second laser beam. Therefore, dynamics of first laser beam affects that of other and hence cross-focusing of the two laser beams takes place. Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of laser as well as plasma parameters on cross-focusing of laser beams and further its effect on power of excited EPW. It has been found that decentered parameters of the two laser beams have significant effect on power of EPW.

A reduced mathematical model for the transport of high current relativistic electron beams in a dense collisional plasma is developed. Based on the hypothesis that the density of relativistic electrons is much less than the plasma density and their energy is much higher than the plasma temperature, a model with two energy scales is proposed, where the beam and plasma electrons are considered as two coupled sub-systems, which exchange the energy and particles due to collisions. The process of energy exchange is described in the Fokker-Planck approximation, where the pitch angle electron-ion and electron-electron collisions dominate. The process of particle exchange between populations, leading to the production of secondary energetic electrons, is described with a Boltzmann term. The electron-electron collisions with small impact parameters make an important contribution in the overall dynamics of the beam electrons.

The longitudinal dielectric response function of a relativistic gas consisting of charged bosons together with the corresponding antiparticles is obtained in the random phase approximation. The theory is renormalized and an analysis of the mode structure and damping properties of the plasma is carried out.

This paper presents a theoretical model for efficient terahertz (THz) radiation by self-focused amplitude-modulated laser beam in preformed ripple density plasma. The density of plasma is modified due to ponderomotive nonlinearity which arises because of the nonuniform spatial profile of the laser beam in magnetized plasma and leads to the self-focusing of the laser beam. The rate of self-focusing depends on the intensity of the amplitude-modulated beam as well as on the externally applied magnetic field strength. The electron also experiences time-dependent ponderomotive force by the laser beam at modulated frequency. A nonlinear current at THz frequency arises on account of the coupling between the ripple density plasma and nonlinear oscillatory velocity of the electrons. The yield of the generated THz radiation enhances with enhancement in self-focusing of the laser beam and applied magnetic field.

The effect of two intense cross-focused cosh-Gaussian laser (CGL) beams on the generation of electron plasma wave (EPW) and particle acceleration in collisionless plasma has been investigated under the relativistic–ponderomotive regime. Due to mutual interaction of two laser beams, cross-focusing takes place in plasma. The EPW is generated by the beating of two cross-focused CGL beams of frequencies ω1 and ω2. An analytical expression for the beamwidth of laser beams and EPW as well as the power of the generated EPW has been evaluated using Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin and paraxial approximations. The energy of the accelerated electrons by the beat-wave process has also been calculated. Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of typical laser plasma parameters on the power of excited EPW and acceleration of electrons. The results are compared with only relativistic nonlinearity and the Gaussian profile of laser beams. It is observed that CGL beams focused earlier than Gaussian beams, which significantly affected the dynamics of plasma wave excitation and particle acceleration. Numerical results indicate that there is a remarkable change in the power of generated EPW and electron acceleration in the relativistic–ponderomotive case in comparison with only relativistic case.

The hydrodynamic efficiency of conversion of the energy of fast charged particles into the kinetic energy of the bulk motion of plane-parallel shells is investigated in the framework of two simple models–one based on the stepwise density profile and the other employing a self-similar solution. The analytical estimates obtained are substantiated with ID hydrodynamic calculations. In case of spherical shells, the three key dimensionless parameters determining the values of the hydrodynamic efficiency are pointed out; the dependence of the hydrodynamic efficiency on these parameters has been explored numerically. The effects of a nonuniform energy deposition (increasing by the end of the fast particle ranges) and of a nonuniform absorber composition are also discussed.

The article reviews experiments on flash X radiography of laser-accelerated foils. The spatial resolution, sensitivity, spectral range, and signal-to-noise ratio of measurements were carefully optimized and characterized. The method was used at the Mishen facility to measure a distribution of mass ablative rate across the focal spot and for observation of the transverse plasma flows during the drive laser pulse.
