An experiment to study the physics of merging and of focusing ion beams is under development at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. In this design, parallel beams of ions (C+, Al+, or Al++) are accelerated to several MV and merged transversely. The merged beams are then further accelerated and the growth in transverse and longitudinal emittance is determined for comparison with theory. The completed apparatus will be used to study problems associated with focusing ion beams to a small spot as required for heavy ion fusion. Details of the accelerator design and considerations of the physics of combining beams are presented.

Filamentation instability for a rotating light ion beam (LIB) fusion system is investigated. Stability conditions, including the effects of fractional current neutralization, rotation of LIB and beam temperature, are derived for propagation through a background plasma. The results are illustrated by plotting stability boundaries for a rotating proton beam propagating in a plasma.

Analytical and numerical investigation of the reflection and transmission of a counter-propagating relativistically strong laser pulse from a relativistically flying dense plasma double-sided mirror is studied. We assume that the incident laser pulse is short, so that we can neglect the slow ion dynamics and consider the electron motion only. Numerical results of the amplitudes of the reflected/transmitted electric fields from a uniformly moving mirror, accelerated mirror, and oscillating mirror are obtained. Fourier spectrum of the reflected intensity from the moving mirror shows that the intensity decreases with increase in the frequency. The reflected pulse has an up-shifted frequency and increased intensity. It is seen that the first few cycles of the reflected radiation exhibit presence of high harmonics, while the later cycles are compressed together with harmonics in comparison with the earlier cycles. The variation of the reflection coefficient for a uniformly moving mirror as a function of the thin foil plasma-density parameter is numerically studied.

Results of experimental and computational investigations devoted to energy transfer mechanisms and X-ray conversion efficiency in laser-produced plasma are presented and discussed. The layers of different thicknesses and diameters deposited on the plane mylar substrate were irradiated by the focused beam of Nd:glass laser. Spectrally, temporally, and spatially resolved measurements of soft X-ray emission have been carried out at power densities of 1013-1014 W/cm2. The conditions of “re-emission” zone formation have been established. Radiative heat conductivity is shown to be the important energy transfer mechanism in the experimental conditions under investigation.

Theoretical and numerical analyses are given for direct- and indirect-driven reactor targets, from which 3-GJ fusion output energy is released. For a reactor target, which has a large radius and long implosion time, supersonic flow of imploding D–T fuel in the converging nozzle (in sphere) is important for adiabatic compression of fuel. For a direct-driven target, pellet gain depends much upon the region where the beam deposits its energy. Phase mixing is also important to increase the absorption rate of irradiating laser light. When a strong light with a phase is concentrated on a small region of target surface, collective electron motion on the target surface radiates electromagnetic waves, which reduce the electron motion. When beam irradiation on the target is not uniform, an indirect-driven target must be used because a direct-driven target is weak for nonuniform irradiation. For an indirect-driven reactor target, which requires a long implosion time, expansion of radiator and absorber layers causes the decrease in radiation temperature. There is the optimum target structure with respect to the aspect ratio (radiation gap distance).

Experiments on self-similar Rayleigh–Taylor instability-induced mixing in gases in the Earth's gravity conducted on the OSA facility at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center–VNIITF are described. These experiments are distinguished from other experiments, usually performed with immiscible liquids in a tank or with miscible liquids initially separated by a solid barrier that is retracted, in that a membrane (of ∼1 μm thickness) with liquid soap film embedded in a thin wire array (with microconductors of diameter 20 μm and with a spacing of 4 mm) initially separates the fluids. An electric current to initiate the fluid interpenetration and mixing destroys the membrane. Experiments performed for three different Atwood numbers are described: in SF6-Ar with A = 0.54, in SF6-He with A = 0.94, and in Kr-Ar with A = 0.35. Various parameters of the mixing were measured from Schlieren photographs. In particular, the dimensionless rate of mixing front growth is α = 0.078.

The general issue of the spectral selection of a portion of the wide extreme-ultraviolet spectrum obtained via extreme nonlinear processes as high order harmonic generation includes the problem of maintaining the ultrafast temporal duration of the pulses. In this paper, we present an instrument in which the pulse selection is operated in the wide wavelength range from 17 nm to above 60 nm, which is the central portion of the high-harmonics spectrum, with an instrumental function of about three femtoseconds. The design of the monochromator is based on the conical diffraction, which realizes very high diffraction efficiency by exploiting the specular reflection on the grating facets long-wise illuminated. The optical layout makes use of two gratings in the compensated-monochromator scheme already presented by the authors. The discussion of the residual aberration is also presented, with the aims to investigate the ultimate temporal resolution obtainable by this scheme.

We present the results of calculations for the K-edges of representative transient carbon ion clusters in a dense carbon plasma. The calculations use the recently implemented non-“muffin-tin” scattered-wave method previously used in the molecular and solid-state fields. Based on a simple model for the cluster potentials it is shown that, compared with a single ion calculation, the presence of neighboring ions can significantly alter the K-edge photoionization cross sections, and hence the resulting opacities.

We report that the tail modulation of Stokes pulses in the high-energy stimulated Brillouin scattering pulse compression can be suppressed by controlling effective pulse width of the pump. It is shown through numerical simulations and validated experimentally that the effective pulse width is an appropriate parameter, which determines the generation of tail modulation. The effective pulse width broaden as the increase of energy. This mechanism leads to the amplification of Stokes tail edge and it is the cause of tail modulation.

Influence of backstreaming ions from the target on spot size of focused 2 MeV electron beam was considered. The 2D version of the particle-in-cell code KARAT was used to study the formation of the ions stream and dynamics of the electron beam. It was shown that light species emitted from the target can disrupt the beam. The emission of low-ionized states of tantalum cannot disrupt the beam during about 30 ns or longer. A few non-invasive techniques of mitigation of the beam disruption were considered. Final magnetic lens with fast variation of magnetic field of several hundred Ampere-turns per nanosecond is capable to stabilize initial spot size of the compressed beam at the target.

The effects of magnetic vortex acceleration (MVA) are investigated with two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations by laser interaction with near-critical density (NCD) plasma inside a hollow conical plasma. Energetic and collimated proton beams can be accelerated by a longitudinal charge-separation field. Energetic protons with a peak energy of 220 MeV are produced in PIC simulations. Compared with a uniform NCD plasma, both the cutoff energy and collimation of proton beams are improved remarkably. Furthermore, the influence of different gap sizes of cone tip is taken into account. For optimizing magnetic vortex acceleration, the gap size of the cone tip is suggested to match the focal spot size of laser pulse.

The characterization of energetic protons generated in the ShenGuang-II UP petawatt laser interactions with foil targets has been systematically studied. The proton energy spectra and angular distributions are measured with a radiochromic film stack. It shows that the proton energy spectra have a Boltzmann distribution with temperature of about 2.8 MeV and cutoff energy of about 20 MeV. The divergence angles of protons vary from 10° to 60°, dependent on the proton energy. The proton source size and location are investigated via the proton point-projection mesh imaging. The proton virtual sources are found to locate tens to hundreds of microns in front of the foil target, depending on the proton energies. A Monte Carlo simulation estimates the diameter of the virtual proton source to be about 12 μm for the protons with energy of 16.8 MeV, which is much smaller than the laser focus size of about 50 μm. The spatial resolution of the 16.8 MeV proton imaging is quantified with the point spread function to be about 15 μm, which is consistent with the proton virtual source size. These results will be important for the users conducting experiments with the protons as a backlighting source on the ShenGuang-II UP petawatt laser.

In this work, two laser-produced plasma (LPP) sources – extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and a LPP soft X-ray (SXR) source were used to create Ne photoionized plasmas. A radiation beam was focused onto a gas stream, injected into a vacuum chamber synchronously with the radiation pulse. EUV radiation spanned a wide spectral range with pronounced maximum centered at λ≈11 nm, while in case of the SXR source spectral maximum was at λ≈1.4 nm. Emission spectra of photoionized plasmas created this way were measured in a wide spectral range λ = 10–100 nm. The dominating spectral lines originated from singly charged ions (Ne II) and neutral atoms (Ne I). For the highest radiation fluence, spectral lines originating from Ne III and even Ne IV species were detected. Differences between the experimental spectra, obtained for all irradiation conditions, were analyzed. They were attributed either to different fluence or spectral distribution of driving photons.

The formation conditions of a cryogenic target with a quality fusion cryolayer were found. The special device for the injection of the cryotarget into the ICF focus was devised.

The U.S. Heavy Ion Fusion Virtual National Laboratory is continuing research into ion sources and injectors that simultaneously provide high current (0.5–1.0 A) and high brightness (normalized emittance better than 1.0 π-mm-mr). The central issue of focus is whether to continue pursuing the traditional approach of large surface ionization sources or to adopt a multiaperture approach that transports many smaller “beamlets” separately at low energies before allowing them to merge. For the large surface source concept, the recent commissioning of the 2-MeV injector for the High Current eXperiment has increased our understanding of the beam quality limitations for these sources. We have also improved our techniques for fabricating large diameter aluminosilicate sources to improve lifetime and emission uniformity. For the multiaperture approach, we are continuing to study the feasibility of small surface sources and a RF-induced plasma source in preparation for beamlet merging experiments, while continuing to run computer simulations for better understanding of this alternate concept. Experiments into both architectures will be performed on a newly commissioned ion source test stand at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory called STS-500. This stand test provides a platform for testing a variety of ion sources and accelerating structures with 500-kV, 17-μs pulses. Recent progress in these areas is discussed as well as plans for future experiments.

When an extremely high pressure gas is irradiated by an intense laser light, a dense plasma produced at the focal spot moves towards the focusing lens with a high velocity. Making use of this phenomenon, a new plasma-bridged gap switch is proposed and its switching characteristics is experimentally examined. From the experiments, it is confirmed that the switching time is almost constant with the applied voltage only when the focal spot is just on the positive electrode, indicating that the bridging of gap is caused by the laser light.

In fast ignition of inertial confinement fusion, hot electron beam is considered to be an appropriate energy source for ignition. However, hot electrons are divergent as they are transporting in over-dense plasma. So collimating the hot electrons becomes one of the most important issues in fast ignition. A method to collimate hot electron beam by external magnetic field is proposed in this paper. The external field can be generated by compressing a seed magnetic field at the stage of laser-driven implosion. This method is confirmed by particle-in-cell simulations. The results show that hot electrons are well collimated by external magnetic field from magnetic-flux compression.

The Hartree-Fock theory of fluctuations leading to simple formulae for configuration probabilities is used in a Detailed Configuration Accounting calculation of opacity in the case of an iron plasma. A direct Detailed Term Accounting method is also applied. The correlations of subshell occupation numbers, which are accounted for in the HF theory, show small effect on the theoretical spectrum corresponding to conditions of a recent measurement.

In this work, we first presents a review of the work that research teams have developed in collaboration in order to determine the optical properties of plasmas during the recent years, and showing the achievements reached. The second part of this paper is devoted to one of these improvements, which is to include reabsorption of the radiation in the calculations of dense optically thick plasmas in non-LTE conditions. Two models recently developed for this purpose are presented. The quantitative study was focused on aluminum plasmas, which was obtained recently at LULI experiments.

In 1982 to 83 a preliminary conceptual design of a heavy-ion-driven inertial fusion (HIF) system, called HIBLIC-I (Heavy Ion Beam and LIthium Curtain) was worked out (The Working Group on ‘HIBLIC-I’ 1984). Its principal aims are: (i) to find out the critical issues in this approach to fusion power plant, (ii) to assess its feasibility and (iii) to promote good collaboration between different fields (such as accelerator physics, plasma science and reactor technology) and of different institutions in Japan. (Obayashi 1981; Hirao 1982).
