Fully electromagnetic, relativistic, two-dimensional, particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of barrel-type and extractor-type Applied-B ion diodes have increased our confidence in the design of present and future diodes for the Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator II (PBFA II). In addition, the data from various experiments on Pro to I, Proto II, and PBFA I Applied-B ion diodes are inconsistent with previous models of diode operation, based on anode-cathode gap closure from expanding plasmas. A new model has been devised and applied to the PBFA II diode to explain the diode impedance and its time history, and to suggest methods for controlling the impedance.

The electron emission yield γ induced by Ne2+ and O2+ impacting on a clean tungsten surface has been measured. The range of projectile energy is from 3 keV/u to 14 keV/u. The total electron yield gradually increases with the projectile velocity. It is found simultaneously that the total electron yield for O2+ is larger than the total electron yield for Ne2+, which is opposite to the results for higher projectile velocity. After considering the contribution from recoiling atoms to the energy distribution and electron emission yield, we find that recoiling atoms are of crucial importance in electron emission in our energy range. Thus, the unexpected results in our experiment can be explained successfully.

When a one-shell three-layer cryogenic target is irradiated by a driver beam of total energy 10 MJ and pulse width 30 ns, the pusher pressure increases to 1013 Pa, accelerating fuel toward target center, and the fuel implosion velocity reaches 3 × 105 m/s. A spherical hollow target plays the role of a supersonic converging nozzle, and the fuel is compressed to 269 times the solid density in the supersonic region and to 3·51 × 104 times in subsonic region. Nonuniform beam-energy-deposition in pusher layer causes nonuniform pusher pressure and hence nonuniform implosion, which reduces fuel compression significantly. The smoothing of pusher pressure by radiative energy transfer, or gas-filled target instead of cryogenic hollow target can be used to reduce the defect of nonuniform implosion. At last, the structure of an indirect driven target is proposed to smooth out pusher pressure in spite of nonuniform beam irradiation.

Taking into account the emission and absorption of resonance radiation in a recombining laser-produced plasma of intermediate density, the system of rate equations for the population densities coupled with the radiative transfer equation is approximately treated. In the case of spatially varying absorption we derive an approximate form of the rate equation determining the population density of the upper resonance level. By applying this relation to an axially symmetric plasma a simple formula that describes the effect of radiation reabsorption on the spatial behaviour of the population density is obtained.

In this paper, we characterize a high repetition-rate regenerating plasma mirror produced by the thin film of liquid formed when two laminar streams collide. The use of a flowing liquid film is inexpensive and the interaction surface refreshes automatically, avoiding buildup of on-target debris. The composition of the liquid material and the relative angle of the film-generating nozzles was optimized for this application. Spectra measured in reflection from a water-based plasma mirror showed a blue shift but an optical reflectivity of up to 30%. The thickness of the film was found to be of the order of 2 ${\rm \mu}$m, and the stability of the reflected spot was ${\approx }1$ mrad. The reflected beam profile was highly distorted but stable. Further optimization of the nozzles to affect the fluid flow should enable significant improvements in control of the fluid films and increase in the reflectivity of these mirrors.

Theoretical and numerical analyses are given for direct- and indirect-driven reactor targets, from which 3-GJ fusion output energy is released. For a reactor target, which has a large radius and long implosion time, supersonic flow of imploding D–T fuel in the converging nozzle (in sphere) is important for adiabatic compression of fuel. For a direct-driven target, pellet gain depends much upon the region where the beam deposits its energy. Phase mixing is also important to increase the absorption rate of irradiating laser light. When a strong light with a phase is concentrated on a small region of target surface, collective electron motion on the target surface radiates electromagnetic waves, which reduce the electron motion. When beam irradiation on the target is not uniform, an indirect-driven target must be used because a direct-driven target is weak for nonuniform irradiation. For an indirect-driven reactor target, which requires a long implosion time, expansion of radiator and absorber layers causes the decrease in radiation temperature. There is the optimum target structure with respect to the aspect ratio (radiation gap distance).

The laboratory generation and diagnosis of uniform near-critical-density (NCD) plasmas play critical roles in various studies and applications, such as fusion science, high energy density physics, astrophysics as well as relativistic electron beam generation. Here we successfully generated the quasistatic NCD plasma sample by heating a low-density tri-cellulose acetate (TCA) foam with the high-power-laser-driven hohlraum radiation. The temperature of the hohlraum is determined to be 20 eV by analyzing the spectra obtained with the transmission grating spectrometer. The single-order diffraction grating was employed to eliminate the high-order disturbance. The temperature of the heated foam is determined to be T = 16.8 ± 1.1 eV by analyzing the high-resolution spectra obtained with a flat-field grating spectrometer. The electron density of the heated foam is about $N_e=4.0\pm 0.3\times {10}^{20}{\text{cm}}^{-3}$ under the reasonable assumption of constant mass density.

X-ray spectra of H-like Mg ions produced in a laser plasma have been measured by space-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy. We identified satellite lines near Lyα lines, 2lnl′ − 1snl′ + hν for n = 2, 3, and 4. We construct a collisional radiative model including the doubly excited states for the intensity ratios of satellite lines. We use atomic data calculated by different methods for satellite lines and compare the results. We derive the electron temperature and density of the laser-produced plasma by a new technique using intensity ratios of only satellite lines. This technique is useful because the Lyα lines are often affected by opacity.

The electromagnetic stopping of intense and relativistic electron beams (REB) arising from femtosecond lasers interacting with a precompressed deuterium–tritium (DT) fuel is investigated within the Bohr–Fermi formalism with a large impact parameter. Dynamical intrabeam correlations in the target are shown to be quantitatively significant for various arrangements of projectile electrons and the overall REB penetration in the DT fuel.

The influence of absorption and ionization on high-order harmonic generation in a gas-filled hollow fiber is analyzed within the framework of slowly varying envelope approximation. Harmonic spectra and pressure dependencies are calculated for high-order harmonic generation in hollow fibers filled with different rare gases. Ionization of the gas filling the fiber gives rise to self-phase modulation of the pump pulse, changing the phase mismatch within the pump pulse and shifting the maxima in pressure dependencies of high-order harmonics.

Filamentation instability for a rotating light ion beam (LIB) fusion system is investigated. Stability conditions, including the effects of fractional current neutralization, rotation of LIB and beam temperature, are derived for propagation through a background plasma. The results are illustrated by plotting stability boundaries for a rotating proton beam propagating in a plasma.

We investigate the Weibel instability (WI) in a dusty plasma which is driven to oscillation by the addition of dust grains in the plasma. Our analysis predicts the existence of three modes in a dusty plasma. There is a high-frequency electromagnetic mode, whose frequency increases with an increase in the relative number density of dust grains and which approaches instability due to the presence of dust grains. The second mode is a damping mode which exists due to dust charge fluctuations in plasma. The third mode is the oscillating WI mode. The dispersion relation and the growth rate of various modes in the dusty plasma are derived using the first-order perturbation theory. The effect of dust grain parameters on frequency and growth rate is also studied and reported.

We present the results of calculations for the K-edges of representative transient carbon ion clusters in a dense carbon plasma. The calculations use the recently implemented non-“muffin-tin” scattered-wave method previously used in the molecular and solid-state fields. Based on a simple model for the cluster potentials it is shown that, compared with a single ion calculation, the presence of neighboring ions can significantly alter the K-edge photoionization cross sections, and hence the resulting opacities.

The characterization of energetic protons generated in the ShenGuang-II UP petawatt laser interactions with foil targets has been systematically studied. The proton energy spectra and angular distributions are measured with a radiochromic film stack. It shows that the proton energy spectra have a Boltzmann distribution with temperature of about 2.8 MeV and cutoff energy of about 20 MeV. The divergence angles of protons vary from 10° to 60°, dependent on the proton energy. The proton source size and location are investigated via the proton point-projection mesh imaging. The proton virtual sources are found to locate tens to hundreds of microns in front of the foil target, depending on the proton energies. A Monte Carlo simulation estimates the diameter of the virtual proton source to be about 12 μm for the protons with energy of 16.8 MeV, which is much smaller than the laser focus size of about 50 μm. The spatial resolution of the 16.8 MeV proton imaging is quantified with the point spread function to be about 15 μm, which is consistent with the proton virtual source size. These results will be important for the users conducting experiments with the protons as a backlighting source on the ShenGuang-II UP petawatt laser.

We report that the tail modulation of Stokes pulses in the high-energy stimulated Brillouin scattering pulse compression can be suppressed by controlling effective pulse width of the pump. It is shown through numerical simulations and validated experimentally that the effective pulse width is an appropriate parameter, which determines the generation of tail modulation. The effective pulse width broaden as the increase of energy. This mechanism leads to the amplification of Stokes tail edge and it is the cause of tail modulation.

We have investigated the effect of free electrons on the spectral properties of high-order harmonics generated in a neon gas jet by a 30 fs Titanium:Sapphire pumping laser with intensities in the range 5–10 × 1014 W/cm2. The main feature of our observations concerns the possibility of continuously tuning the harmonic wavelength in the spectral region 20–7 nm, by taking advantage of the blue shift of harmonic wavelengths induced by the presence of free electrons to cover the entire spectral region between two consecutive harmonics of the unshifted spectrum. Different amounts of blue shift, which can be as large as 0.3–0.4 nm, are imparted to the given harmonic by simply changing the gas-jet-laser-beam-waist relative position. We have also interpreted our experimental results with a simple model for the generation process based on the “barrier suppression” ionization of an atom exposed to an ultraintense laser field.

We suggest several cascade lasing schemes: (1) cascade of laser transitions between atom (ion) excited levels when the lower laser level of one laser transition is simultaneously the upper laser level of another transition located below; (2) successive lasing, first, on ion transitions, then after ion recombination on atom transitions; (3) while using multicomponent mixtures, successive lasing on atoms (ions) of separate components. These possibilities are discussed in terms of specific lasers, some of which have been studied experimentally.

Application of Fourier theory to heat conduction due to laser irradiation at high power intensities (i.e. 1010 W/m2) gives errors of the order of 30 per cent at the upper end of the temperature rise time. This is caused by the assumptions made in the Fourier theory, since the heat flux through a given plane depends on the electron energy distribution through the material. On the scale of distance required to examine the problem, the material can no longer be considered as being a homogeneous continuum and when the power intensities of interest are concerned, the higher order terms in the heat transfer equation become important. Therefore, the problem requires to be examined in the quantum field. Application of electron kinetic theory to the problem enhances the solution within an accuracy greater than 90 per cent. The present theory introduces a new model for the conduction mechanism.

By using an effective dielectric constant to modify the nanoplasma model, the interactions of large Ar clusters with high-intensity femtosecond laser pulses have been studied. It is shown that the resonance absorption mechanism plays a predominant role in the production of highly energetic argon ions, and the calculated mean kinetic energy of Ar ions is in good agreement with our previous experimental results. The scaling of mean kinetic energy and charge states of Ar ions against cluster size and laser intensity has also been analyzed. The results indicate the existence of optimum cluster sizes and optimum laser intensities where the best coupling efficiency of the laser energy can be obtained.

The paper presents the first experimental results obtained by using new gamma-quantum diagnostics for ion beam induced high energy density matter. Registration of γ-quantum output from the region of beam-target interaction with time resolution enables to pick-up information on density evolution of the target even if the ionization state of matter involved is unknown.
