The dense Z-pinch project at Imperial College is aimed at achieving radiative collapse to high density in a hydrogen plasma, and also to study plasmas close to controlled fusion conditions. To this end, the MAGPIE generator (2.4 MV, 1.25, and 200 ns) has been built and tested, and is now giving preliminary experimental data at 60% of full voltage for carbon and CD2 fibers. These discharges are characterized by an initial radial expansion followed by the occurrence of m = 0 structures with transient X-ray emission from bright spots. Late in the discharge a disruption can occur, accompanied by hard X-ray emission from the anode due to an energetic electron beam and, in the case of CD2 fibers, a neutron burst. Concomitant theoretical studies have solved the linear stability problem for a Z-pinch with large ion Larmor radii, showing that a reduction in growth rate of m = 0 and m = 1 modes to about 20% of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) value can occur for a parabolic density profile when the Larmor radius is optimally 20% of the pinch radius. Two dimensional MHD simulations of Z-pinches in two extremes of focussed short-pulse laserplasma interactions and of galactic jets reveal a nonlinear stabilizing effect in the presence of sheared flow. One-dimensional simulations show that at low line density the lower hybrid drift instability can lead to coronal radial expansion of a Z-pinch plasma.

Ionization distributions and radiation spectra of a dense plasma driven by intense ion beams are studied by solving stationary rate equations. Expressions for the rate coefficients are derived. Optically thin plasmas of hydrogen and carbon are considered neglecting hydrodynamic motion. Results on level populations versus temperature, on power balance and equilibrium states, and also on emission spectra are given. In particular, the transition from beam-determined plasma states to thermal equilibrium states is discussed. Beam parameters are chosen close to those in experiments now being planned.

The actual situation with respect to the use of an RF linac driver for heavy ion inertial fusion (HIF) is discussed. At present, there is no high current heavy ion linac under construction. However, in the course of linac projects for e−, p, d, or highly charged ions several developments were made, which may have some impact on the design of a HIF driver. Medium- and low-β superconducting structures suited for pulsed high current beam operation are actually designed and investigated at several laboratories. A superconducting 40 MeV, 125 mA cw linac for deuteron acceleration is designed for the Inertial Fusion Material Irradiation Facility (IFMIF). The Institute for Applied Physics (IAP) is developing a superconducting 350-MHz, 19-cell prototype CH-cavity for β = 0.1. The prototype cavity will be ready for tests in 2004. A superconducting main HIF driver linac would considerably reduce the power losses. Moreover, it would allow for an efficient linac operation at a higher duty factor.

The 1.4-AMeV room-temperature High Current Injector HSI at Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) has been in routine operation for more than 2 years now. With a mass-to-charge ratio of up to 65, a current limit of 15 mA for U4+, and an energy range from 2.2 AkeV up to 1.4 AMeV, this linac is suited to gain useful experience on the way toward the design of a HIF RF driver. The status and technical improvements of that A/q ≤ 65, 91-MV linac are reported. Beam dynamics calculations for Bi1+-beams show that powerful focusing elements at the linac front end are the bottleneck with respect to a further increase in beam current. Besides superconducting and pulsed wire quadrupoles, the potential of the Gabor-plasma lenses is investigated.

Ti electrodes were directly deposited at different positions on diamond-like carbon (DLC) films to form horizontal and longitudinal electric fields on their surfaces. The ID/IG ratio increased with the sp3 content in the membrane when the DLC film was laser-irradiated and the electric field intensity was 0 V/cm. The bias electric field intensity increased from 0 to 1000 V/cm, and the corresponding laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) increased. The three-dimensional damage morphology of the DLC film with two different electrode structures was observed when the electric field intensity was 220 V/cm. Two types of electrode structures were observed in the Raman spectra under an electric field intensity of 110 V/cm and laser energy densities of 0 and 1.56 J/cm2. Results showed that the horizontal bias field had a more obvious influence than the longitudinal electric field on the decrease of the sp3–sp2 hybridization, preventing the formation of sp2 clusters, thereby slowing down the graphitization process of DLC. Applying the bias field to the DLC film could slow down the DLC film graphitization process and improve the LIDT of the DLC film.

The simplified perturbation method of Vandenboomgaerde et al. (2002) is applied to both the Richtmyer–Meshkov and the Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities. This theory is devoted to the calculus of the growth rate of the perturbation of the interface in the weakly nonlinear stage. In the standard approach, expansions appear to be series in time. We build accurate approximations by retaining only the terms with the highest power in time. This simplifies and accelerates the solution. High order expressions are then easily reachable. For the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, multimode configurations become tractable and the selection mode process can be studied. Inferences for the intermediate nonlinear regime are also proposed. In particular, a class of homothetic configurations is inferred; its validity is verified with numerical simulations even as vortex structures appear at the interface. This kind of method can also be used for the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. Some examples are presented.

In this paper, the ion jet generation from the interaction of an ultraintense laser pulse and a rear-side concave target is investigated analytically using a simple fluid model. We find that the ion expanding surface at the rear-side is distorted due to a strong charge-separation field, and that this distortion becomes dramatic with a singular cusp shown on the central axis at a critical time. The variation of the transverse ion velocity and the relative ion density diverge on the cusp, signaling the emergence of an on-axis ion jet. We have obtained analytical expressions for the critical time and the maximum velocity of the ion jet, and suggested an optimum shape for generating a collimated energetic ion jet. The above theoretical analysis has been verified by particle-in-cell (PIC) numerical simulations.

The formation conditions of a cryogenic target with a quality fusion cryolayer were found. The special device for the injection of the cryotarget into the ICF focus was devised.

We prove that the radiation damping force and the rate of change of the damping energy, in the Landau-Lifshitz forms, in interactions between very intense laser beams and relativistic electron beams, are periodic functions of only one variable, that is the phase of the electromagnetic field. The property is proved without using any approximation, in the most general case, when the degree of polarization of the electromagnetic field, the initial phase of the incident field and the initial energy of the electron have arbitrary values. This property leads to a strong simplification of the calculation of the radiation reaction parameters and of their dependence on the initial electron energy and angular frequency of the laser beam. Our analysis is performed in the proper inertial system of the electron. The radiation reaction is significant for laser beam intensities of the order 1022 W/cm2, and for electron energy greater than 1 GeV. The calculations reveal limitations of the method of generating hard radiations by interactions between laser beams and relativistic electron beams.

The time and wavelength dependencies of luminescence resulted from 11 low-lying Cd II levels in He-Cd medium excited by 252Cf fission fragments have been measured in the temperature range from 553 to 669 K and various buffer gas pressures (1.5–5 atm). The method used is based upon applying multichannel coincidence technique and single-photon spectrometry. The lifetime, pumping rate, and luminescence spectral line width data obtained for 325- and 441.6-nm transitions have been used to estimate lasing characteristics of He-Cd medium under optimal conditions.

Multiple ionization of large clusters when they are irradiated by an intense ultrashort laser pulse is investigated. Different mechanisms, responsible for cluster ionization, are investigated. It is found that the ionization of large clusters, irradiated by a strong intense ultrashort laser pulse, is realized by means of the surface thermoemission.

So-called “space junk” forced a change of plan for a recent Shuttle mission. However, ground-based lasers with atmospheric-turbulence-compensating beam directors represent a singularly effective method of de-orbiting space junk, because they use cheap Earth-based power, and because they lend themselves to rapid retargeting. Plasma physics and lasertarget interaction theory dictate the laser parameters for a particular mission. We will discuss a practical laser system and beam director with 20-kW average power at 0.5-µm wavelength that is capable of clearing most low-Earth-orbit objects with mass less than 100 kg in about 4 years. This is a special application of the Laser Impulse Space Propulsion (LISP) concept, by which objects are propelled in space by the ablation jet produced on their surface by a remote laser.

When an extremely high pressure gas is irradiated by an intense laser light, a dense plasma produced at the focal spot moves towards the focusing lens with a high velocity. Making use of this phenomenon, a new plasma-bridged gap switch is proposed and its switching characteristics is experimentally examined. From the experiments, it is confirmed that the switching time is almost constant with the applied voltage only when the focal spot is just on the positive electrode, indicating that the bridging of gap is caused by the laser light.

As the binary collision process requires much more computation time, a statistical electron-electron collision model based on modified Langevin equation is developed to reduce it. This collision model and a simple electron-ion scattering model are installed into one-dimensional PIC code, and collisional effects on fast electron generation and transport in fast ignition are investigated. In the collisional case, initially thermal electrons are heated up to a few hundred keV due to direct energy transfer by electron-electron collision, and they are also heated up to MeV by Joule heating induced by electron-ion scattering. Thus the number of low energy component of fast electrons increase than that in the collisionless case.

We studied the formation of the collector ion flow in magnetically insulated diodes (MID) with plate-, sphere-, and cone-shaped cathodes. The ions are formed as a result of the ionization of residual gas by electron bombardment and are focused into the cathode plasma region. This effect can negatively influence diode operation in the microsecond range of pulse duration.

In this work, we first presents a review of the work that research teams have developed in collaboration in order to determine the optical properties of plasmas during the recent years, and showing the achievements reached. The second part of this paper is devoted to one of these improvements, which is to include reabsorption of the radiation in the calculations of dense optically thick plasmas in non-LTE conditions. Two models recently developed for this purpose are presented. The quantitative study was focused on aluminum plasmas, which was obtained recently at LULI experiments.

The effects of a radiation field (RF) on the interaction process of a relativistic electron beam (REB) with an electron plasma are investigated. The stopping power of the test electron averaged with a period of the RF has been calculated assuming an underdense plasma, ω0 > ωp, where ω0 is the frequency of the RF and ωp is the plasma frequency. In order to highlight the effect of the radiation field we present a comparison of our analytical and numerical results obtained for nonzero RF with those for vanishing RF. In particular, it has been shown that the weak RF increases the mean energy loss for small angles between the velocity of the REB and the direction of polarization of the RF while decreasing it at large angles. Furthermore, the relative deviation of the energy loss from the field-free value is strongly reduced with increasing the beam energy. Special case of the parallel orientation of the polarization of the RF with respect to the beam velocity has been also considered. At high-intensities of the RF two extreme regimes have been distinguished when the excited harmonics cancel effectively each other reducing strongly the energy loss or increasing it due to the constructive interference. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the energy loss of the ultrarelativistic electron beam increases systematically with the intensity of the RF exceeding essentially the field-free value.

The U.S. Heavy Ion Fusion Virtual National Laboratory is continuing research into ion sources and injectors that simultaneously provide high current (0.5–1.0 A) and high brightness (normalized emittance better than 1.0 π-mm-mr). The central issue of focus is whether to continue pursuing the traditional approach of large surface ionization sources or to adopt a multiaperture approach that transports many smaller “beamlets” separately at low energies before allowing them to merge. For the large surface source concept, the recent commissioning of the 2-MeV injector for the High Current eXperiment has increased our understanding of the beam quality limitations for these sources. We have also improved our techniques for fabricating large diameter aluminosilicate sources to improve lifetime and emission uniformity. For the multiaperture approach, we are continuing to study the feasibility of small surface sources and a RF-induced plasma source in preparation for beamlet merging experiments, while continuing to run computer simulations for better understanding of this alternate concept. Experiments into both architectures will be performed on a newly commissioned ion source test stand at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory called STS-500. This stand test provides a platform for testing a variety of ion sources and accelerating structures with 500-kV, 17-μs pulses. Recent progress in these areas is discussed as well as plans for future experiments.

A two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation is carried out to study the focusing effects of the long proton beam propagating in background plasmas. It is found that the smooth beam, with the long length and the small density gradient profile, is focused to high density. The sharp beam, with long length and the large density gradient profile, is modulated into many high density and periodic short beam pulses due to the wakefield induced by the beam. In addition, increasing the plasma density and adopting the non-uniform plasmas are the effective ways to reduce the wakefield.

Experimental and theoretical studies on the evolution of shock waves in air plasma induced by laser spark have been carried out. The systematic study of the shock wave has been performed experimentally and 1-D numerical code of radiation hydrodynamics (1-DRHC) has been used to simulate the later stage of laser spark in air. The numerical results on the propagation of shock waves and the expansion of hot plasma are presented and subsequent results on the first divergent and convergent shock waves are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

Brillouin backscattering instability is investigated in inhomogeneous collisional plasma. The slow-coupling equations for the instability in a medium with linear density ramp are obtained. For large inhomogeneity scale length, the homogeneous growth rate is found to be modified by a factor of

[1/square root(2) times square root(ω02/ (ω02 + νe2) + ω0/square root(ω02 + νe2))]

For the convective instability, the amplification factor is found to be

[Λ = (|γB0|2/2β)(ω02/ω02 + νe2)]

The presence of collisions leads to a reduction in both the growth rate and the amplification factor, where the threshold intensity for the instability to occur increases.
