Intense light-ion beams are being developed for investigations of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). This effort has concentrated on developing the Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator II (PBFA II) at Sandia as a driver for ICF target experiments, on design concepts for a high-yield, high-gain Laboratory Microfusion Facility (LMF), and on a comprehensive system study of a light-ion beam-driven commercial fusion reactor (LIBRA). This article reports on the status of design concepts and research in these areas.

1-D computer simulations have been performed to study the influence of X-rays preheating on the compression of spherical laser-produced plasmas. The targets are glass microballoons filled with Neon at the initial pressure 10 bars. It is assumed that the only significant absorption process in the Neon is by inverse bremsstrahlung absorption. The results indicate that the radiative preheating energy has a nonnegligible effect on the compression, and a study of the Lawson criterion shows that this effect is more important for high-Z target shell materials and for thicker shells.

The characteristics of a laser plasma created by a high intensity UV excimer laser were investigated. The UV laser plasma was used as a switch for control of the laser pulse duration for the first time. An X-ray preionized XeCl laser pulse duration can be changed from 10 to 85 ns. This technique is useful for many applications of excimer lasers requiring various pulse durations.

Experimental results are reported on an extractor for pulsed, high-intensity beams of intermediate mass ions. Aluminum and indium plasmas were generated using a metal vapor vacuum arc. A method for electrostatic separation of ions from electrons at the anode was utilized to generate constant current beams, insensitive to plasma flux variations.

A maximum extraction voltage of 30 kV was applied across a 1·6 cm gap. Voltage pulse length ranged from 10 to 50μsec. Peak current densities of 15 mA/cm2 and normalized emittance of εn<3χ10-7; π-m-rad were achieved for Al+ and In+ from a 20-cm2 anode. Ions were predominantly in the +1 ionization state with no observable species contamination. The technology may have application to the induction linac approach to Accelerator Inertial Fusion.

Surface periodic structures are generated upon irradiation of a silicon carbide (SiC) thin film by the plasma produced by 40 fs pulses from a Ti:Sapphire laser focused onto a thick low density polyethylene (LDPE) foil facing the SiC film. Independently of the number of laser pulses applied, these structures, with average regular periodicity of 710 nm, are evident throughout all irradiated areas. We attribute their formation to the efficient coupling of the unfocused femtosecond laser pulse with the incoherent extreme ultraviolet component of the laser-generated LDPE plasma.

As the development of the pulsed power technology, high voltage pulse transformer (HVPT) is usually used instead of Marx generator as a charging device for the pulse forming line (PFL) of intense electron-beam accelerator (IEBA), and which make the IEBA compact. However, during the operation of the IEBA, the HVPT may be destroyed for the failure of electrical insulation and the over-voltage. So in this paper, the output voltage characteristics of IEBA, characteristics of the voltage at the output terminal of HVPT at four kinds of load conditions are analyzed, including load matching, load short, load open, and surface flashover in the vacuum chamber. It is found that load short, load open, and surface flashover in vacuum chamber will affect the voltage at the output terminal of HVPT, and an oscillation wave could be formed, which affect the electrical insulation of HVPT and decrease the lifetime of HVPT. Meanwhile, the waveform of the load voltage is also modified, especially at the conditions of load open and surface flashover in vacuum chamber. When the load is open, the amplitude of the output main pulse of IEBA is twice the charging voltage of BPFL. However, the amplitude of the output pulse of IEBA is modified by the voltage at the output terminal of HVPT, and the resistance of main switch channel has a great effect on the amplitude of the load voltage. When surface flashover occurs in the vacuum chamber, the pulse duration of the output voltage will be decreased. So, during the operation of IEBA, load short, load open and surface flashover in vacuum chamber should be avoided.

Calculations of the double ionization of a model 1D helium atom interacting with an intense short laser pulse are presented. A substantial signature of nonsequential double ionization is found for all the wavelengths that are considered, from 248 nm to 1064 nm, provided that sufficiently short pulses are employed. We show how one can modify the size of the “knee” structure of the double ionization yield curve by varying the laser pulse duration. The underlying mechanism of the correlated double electron ejection is investigated and discussed.

The two-dimensional snake scanning of the CCD method provides an effective solution to measure small-scale light spots which are smaller than one CCD pixel. The influences of the A/D conversion digits and response uniformity of the CCD on the measurement error are studied. When the A/D conversion digit is 20, the measurement error can be ignored. The maximum error value of the nonuniform response of the CCD pixel when the order of the super-Gaussian function is 10 is 0.7 μm. The research results can be used to guide the experiment.

The study proposes a semi-analytical model for the pulse compression of two co-propagating intense laser beams having Gaussian intensity profile in the temporal domain. The high power laser beams create the relativistic nonlinearity during propagation in plasma, which leads to the modification of the refractive index profile. The co-propagating laser beams get self- compressed by virtue of group velocity dispersion and induced nonlinearity. The induced nonlinearity in the plasma broadens the frequency spectrum of the pulse via self-phase modulation, turn to shorter the pulse duration and enhancement of laser beam intensity. The nonlinear Schrodinger equations were set up for co-propagating laser beams in plasmas and have been solved in Matlab by considering paraxial approximation. The propagation characteristics of both laser beams inside plasma are divided into three regions through the critical divider curve, which has been plotted between pulse width τ01 and laser beam power P01. Based on the preferred value of critical parameters, these regions are oscillatory compression, oscillatory broadening, and steady broadening. In findings, it is observed that the compression of the laser beam depends on the combined intensity of both beams, plasma density, and initial pulse width.

In this article, we discuss the modifications that occur in the brightness and gain of a longitudinal wiggler-free electron laser with the aid of induced betatron oscillation. Two novel approaches have been discussed to improve the gain of the system. In the first scheme, an auxiliary undulator field with betatron oscillations brings in additional bunching and results in enhanced gain. In the second scheme, an axial magnetic field is tuned to provide additional bunching for gain enhancement.

Detailed knowledge of dissociation behavior and dissociation products is necessary to understand the stability, sensitivity, and the reactive mechanism of explosives under laser initiation. A time-of-flight mass spectrometer was utilized to detect the transient products of 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7) produced under 532 nm pulse laser ablation, the possible attribution of intermediate ion fragments were confirmed. The laser fluence threshold for detectable fragments is about 3.6 J/cm2. The peak intensities of main ions (CN, CNO/C2H4N, NO2, C2N2O, HCN, C2NH2, etc.) increase with the increasing of laser fluence, and reach the maximum at 11.5 J/cm2. Moreover, time-depend changes of ion intensity indicate that the type and degree of reactions are different in different periods. According to the molecular structure of FOX-7 and the intermediate ions, the laser-induced dissociation mechanisms were proposed to illustrate the cause of the fragments which might throw some light on the laser initiation of FOX-7.

In this paper, we present the application of partially spatially coherent extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation from xenon plasma from a laser-plasma source, based on a double stream gas puff target, in coherent imaging. The radiation at the wavelength of 13.5 ± 0.5 nm was employed to record Gabor-type holograms. An iterative algorithm, based on a phase retrieval technique, was developed and used to remove the twin image from the reconstructed EUV image of test objects. Using partially coherent radiation from a compact, laser-plasma source based on a double stream gas puff target, which is intrinsically incoherent, a Gabor EUV holography was successfully demonstrated.

We are developing neutron diagnostics to characterize the implosions performed with the Phebus laser, operating at 5 kJ blue light delivered in 1·3 ns. For measuring the glass pusher areal density, (ρΔR), of the target, a silicon radiochemistry diagnostic has been implemented and is currently being used. We describe the diagnostic and its performance. Pusher areal density measurements, (ρΔR) and calculated values of fuel density are given. Deuterium (D)-tritium (T) final densities as high as 100 × D-T liquid density (20 g/cm3) have been achieved.

The acceleration of an electron by the ponderomotive force of a Gaussian whistler pulse in a magnetized high-density quantum plasma obeying Fermi–Dirac distribution is studied using the recently developed quantum hydrodynamic model. Effective acceleration takes place when the peak whistler amplitude exceeds a threshold value, and the whistler frequency is greater than the cyclotron frequency. The threshold amplitude decreases with ratio of plasma frequency to electron cyclotron frequency. The electron is accelerated at velocities of about twice the group velocity of the whistler.

We study the effect of magnetic field in an implosion process achieved by radiation. A time-varying sinusoidal magnetic field is seen to affect the continuous transition of space-like detonation to time-like detonation at the core of implosion region. The oscillating varying magnetic field has a significant effect in increasing the volume of the time-like detonation of the core of implosion and also modifies the time of the implosion process. This transition can have significant outcome both theoretically and experimentally in the areas of high-energy hadronization of quark–gluon plasma matter and inertial confinement fusion efforts of fuels.

The use of the Soft X-ray Contact Microscopy technique is discussed as a possible new tool to get information on dopant distribution in the core of single-mode optical fibers with 50 nm spatial resolution.

The effects of finite bandwidth and random-phase pumping on parametric instabilities have been studied extensively (Thomson & Karush 1974; Thomson 1975; Laval et al. 1977). The possibilities arising from the use of this method and a time delay to obtain a spatial incoherence uniform illumination have been proven in experiments (Lehmberg & Obenschain 1983; Mima & Kato 1982; Kato & Mima 1982; Richardson 1981). In this paper we investigate this subject in an alternative way and obtain some results on the influence of the gain profile on parametric instabilities.

An obliquely incident high-power laser (ω0, k0z) on the metallic surface can resonantly excite a surface plasma wave (SPW) (ω1, k1z) and a quasi-electrostatic plasma wave (ω, kz) inside the skin layer at the phase-matching conditions of frequency ω1 = ω − ω0 and wave number k1z = kz − k0z. The oscillating electrons in the skin layer couples with the seed SPW and exert non-linear ponderomotive force on electrons at the frequency of quasi-static mode. Density perturbations due to quasi-static mode and ponderomotive force associate with the motion of electrons (due to incident laser) and give rise to a non-linear current by feedback mechanism. At ω/kz ~ vF (where vF is the Fermi velocity of metal) this non-linear current is responsible for the growth of SPW. The maximum growth of the present process (≅1.5 × 1012 s−1) is achieved at incident angle θ = 42° for laser frequency ω0 = 2 × 1015 rad/s. Growth of SPW enhances from 1.62 × 1011 to ≅1.5 × 1012 s−1 as the magnetic field changes from 12 to 24 MG. The excited SPW can be utilized for surface heating and diagnostics purpose.

The one-dimensional Lagrangian code MEDUSA has been adapted to model the pressure of laser photons and the transfer of laser light momentum to underdense plasma investigated using the modified code. It is shown for lasers of wavelength ≃ 1μm that the plasma electron density needs to be close to the critical density (1021cm−3) and that the laser intensity needs to be greater than ∼1016Wcm−2 for significant laser momentum transfer to plasma. It was found that small plasmas (scale-length = 1 μm) result in the best ‘signature’ of laser light momentum transfer to plasma (more enhanced expansion velocities) but that the largest momentum transfer is for the largest plasmas considered (scale-length = 100 μm). The formation of suitable underdense plasmas for momentum transfer by a laser pre-pulse onto a foil target is investigated using a two-dimensional Eulerian code.
