Possibilities are discussed of using Brillouin cells to produce high-peak-power radiation with the diffraction-limited divergence. The major emphasis is on the problems of coherent beam coupling at the output of several optical channels and of laser-pulse compression.

The linear conversion theory of laser produced plasma filaments is studied in this paper. By calculations for the energy flux of the second harmonic emission on the basis of the planar wave-plasma interaction model, it has been found that there exists no 2ω0 harmonic emission in the direction perpendicular to the incident laser, in contradiction with the experiments. Therefore, we have proposed a linear conversion theory on the second harmonic emission from a plasma filament and discovered the intense 2ω0 harmonic emission in the direction perpendicular to the incident laser, which is in agreement with the experiments.

The paper describes different types of plane targets, the method for obtaining metal microballoons from Au, Ag, and Cu with diameters of 600–1200 μm and wall thickness of 5–20 μm, and spherical cascade and cannonball type targets.

The transmitted and reflected second harmonics (SH) generation by an oblique p-polarized laser pulse irradiated on vacuum-magnetized plasma interface is investigated. The laser pulse propagates through a homogenous, underdense, and transversely magnetized plasma. The transverse magnetic field plays the role of a self-generated magnetic field produced in laser plasma interaction. It is shown that if the transmitted and reflected SH components investigated as a simultaneous process, the maximum SH power deviates from previous reports specially near the critical angle. The deviation increases with laser field intensity and plasma density. The results reveal that the conversion efficiency increases slightly by increasing incident angle and drastically enhances near the critical angle. We show that the transmitted SH power decreases by increasing the magnetic field strength, in contrast to the normal incidence, which the SH power is increased. The comparison revealed that the SH efficiency is greater for transmitted component, while the reflected component is more proper for technical and experimental applications. This paper not only conforms the previous reports for angle far from the critical but also modifies them for the SH generation near the critical angle. Moreover, this paper gives a new insight for SH generation by a magnetized plasma.

We investigate an ionization injection scheme in a “weakly” non-linear regime of a wakefield, driven by sub-TW, few-cycle laser pulses in a single-stage, high-Z gas. This medium simultaneously provides the background wake fluid electrons from its lower ionization states and the necessary dephased electrons from its higher ionization states. Two dimensional-particle-in-cell simulations show the generation of relativistic electron beamlets having up to 15 MeV peak energy, with a narrow energy-spread and sub-fs duration. Since the currently-available sub-TW, few-cycle laser systems operate at kHz repetition rates, the presented scheme is capable of producing kHz attosecond electron bunches and their associated radiations which can find unique applications, for instance, in attosecond diffraction and microscopy.

The primary goal of Laser and Particle Beams as part of the Cambridge University Press is the dissemination of knowledge in our research field. How effective we are in this respect is not easy to determine. But the impact factor published annually in June by Thomson ISI® 2005 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), gives at least an indication and a method to compare other journals in the field. In this respect, Laser and Particle Beams is a journal with a very high ranking in the field of applied physics, but it also compares very well to journals in other field of physics. The impact factor of a journal gives an account of how often an average paper in the journal is referred to, in a two year time span after publication. The current impact factor of 2.59 is based on an evaluation conducted in 2005 of Laser and Particle Beams publications of 2003 and 2004. During the evaluation period (2005), Laser and Particle Beams publications were cited about 1000 times. The topics that attracted most attention were Fast Ignition (Deutsch, 2004; Mulser & Schneider, 2004a; Hora, 2004; Mulser & Bauer, 2004b), Inertial Fusion Targets (Borisenko et al., 2003), and Ion and Electron Acceleration in laser plasma and Ultrashort Pulses (Shorokhov & Pukhov, 2004; Osman et al., 2004; Malka & Fritzler, 2004; Limpouch et al., 2004; Pegoraro et al., 2004). However, the editorial boards of Laser and Particle Beams strongly encourage authors to submit their results in High Energy Density Physics, the emerging field of Warm Dense Matter, Pulsed Power and Accelerator Physics and Technology.

We present a theory for describing the inner structure of the electron bunch in the bubble regime starting from a random distribution of electrons inside the bubble and subsequently minimizing the system's energy. Consequently, we find a filament-like structure in the direction of propagation that is surrounded by various shells consisting of further electrons. If we specify a two-dimensional (2D) initial structure, we observe a hexagonal structure for a high number of particles, corresponding to the close packing of spheres in two dimensions. The 2D structures are in agreement with the equilibrium slice model.

In the present work, excitation of nonlinear ion acoustic wave (IAW) in collisionless plasma by laser beam having null intensity at the center is examined considering relativistic nonlinearity. The differential equation for beam-width parameter is determined considering relativistic nonlinearity using the paraxial and Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin approximations by the parabolic equation method. The propagation features of the IAW are found to be modified due to the nonlinearity present in the system. The hollow Gaussian beam (HGB) gets nonlinearly coupled with the seed IAW, results in excitation of nonlinear IAW. The interaction of nonlinear IAW with pump beam demonstrated stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) of HGB. It is found that the power of IAW and power of SBS is affected with the order of HGB. The power of IAW and backscattered power of SBS is determined analytically and numerically for various orders of HGB. It is found that the power of IAW and the backscattering is diminished for higher order of HGB.

Experimental studies on high power ∼ 10 μs electron beam generation have been carried out. High efficiency (about 75%) of energy transfer from a capacitor storage to the electron beam with total energy about 150 kJ has been attained.

In a recent study R. G. Evans developed an analytic model for ICF targets heated by heavy ion beams in order to show the differences to laser beam heating. However, these differences are really not very pronounced. In fact, Evans' model should be directly applicable to describe exploding pusher foil targets. In addition, Evans' scaling law for the ablation pressure PA with target density ρ0 and particle beam intensity Ib,

is identical to the scaling found for laser targets with tamped flow (Ahlborn, 1981).

Halo distribution is a key topic for background study. This paper has developed an analytical method to give an estimation of beam halo distribution in storage rings. This is a creative new theory. As an example, the equilibrium particle distribution of the beam tail in the Accelerator Test Facility damping ring is calculated analytically with different emittance and different vacuum degree. The analytical results agree the measurements very well. This is a general method, which can be applied to any electron rings.

In a series of experiments done at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics of the University of Rochester, Kr/Ar- and Ar-filled polymer shell targets were imploded using the 24 beam (351 nm) 2 KJ Omega laser system. We present results from the analysis of the X-ray line spectra recorded on these experiments. In particular, we discuss the Stark broadening of L-shell spectra, its application to plasma diagnostics, and the advantages of recording time-resolved spectra. We also show results from radiation-hydrodynamics modeling of these experiments.

Suggested by numerical simulations, recent experiments have shown that a significant guiding force is exerted by a reduced-density channel on electron beams propagating through initially un-ionized air. A theoretical analysis of this guiding force had been given that assumed uniform beam and channel and small beam-channel offset. From a 2-D model, relative to a beam slice, the guiding force is calculated in this article for arbitrary beamchannel offset and for various smooth beam and channel profiles. This calculation confirms the above-quoted experimental evidence of a guiding force significant with respect to the deflection force exerted by the earth's magnetic field. It also confirms the crucial role played by the secondary electron temperature distribution. Finally, it suggests optimal values for the ratio between channel and beam rms radii.

In this paper we generalize the filament study to include the Raman side scattering by solving the coupling equations of an electron plasma wave and a side-scattering electromagnetic wave. We also give an explanation of the physical phenomenon observed in the Raman-scattering experiments.

The stopping power of dense nonideal plasmas is calculated in different many-body approximations. The T-matrix approximation of binary collisions is compared with the random phase approximation (RPA) approximation of dielectric fluctuations. It is found that RPA contributions are more important for dense plasmas at low temperatures. Within a microscopic model, the dynamical evolution of the velocity of the projectile is calculated. It reproduces experimental values well for the stopping of fast heavy ions at times after a pinch discharge. Further improvements due to memory effects and relaxation fields are discussed. A renormalization of the effective energy transfer by memory effects is presented.

Experiments conducted at the OSA shock tube facility at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center–VNIITF to investigate the compressible turbulent mixing of argon and krypton gases induced by the Rayleigh–Taylor instability are described. A liquid soap film membrane of thickness ∼1 micrometer embedded in an array of microconductors is used, on which specified initial perturbations can be applied. The shock is piston driven by compressed gas. The gas interface was accelerated with an acceleration g′4 3104 m0s2. The membrane is disintegrated at the beginning of the experiment by a strong electric explosion. Imaging is performed using Schlieren photography. The dimensionless growth rate of the mixing zone was determined to be 0.04.

The key issues of laser fusion are to achieve highly efficient implosion by the ablation and to reach the high gain of a fuel pellet. Measures of the success are the neutron yield and the areal density of the fuel. Recent results show the neutron yield per laser shot to be 1013, and the ρR is 0·2g/cm2. These data seem to be approaching the breakeven condition.

The dependence of the high-order harmonic cutoff spectrum from the absolute phase of the laser pulse is here experimentally investigated. Noticeable shifts are observed. Their interpretation is proposed with a model based on the absolute-phase dependence of the trajectories of the photoelectrons that contribute to a given harmonic order.

A linearly polarized laser pulse has been employed as a wiggler in a free-electron laser (FEL) in the presence of a plasma background for generating short wavelength radiation down to the extreme ultraviolet ray and X-ray spectral regions. Introducing plasma background in the FEL interaction region would lessen the beam energy requirement and also enhance both the beam current and the electron-bunching process. This configuration affords the possibility of scaling the device to more compact FELs and would have a higher tunability by changing the plasma density and the temperature of the electron beam. Electron trajectories have been analyzed using single-particle dynamics. The effect of plasma density on electron orbits has been investigated. A polynomial dispersion relation considering longitudinal thermal motion has been derived, by employing perturbation analysis. Numerical studies indicate that by increasing plasma density, the growth rate for groups I and II decreases, while the growth rate for group III increases. In addition, the effect of beam temperature and cyclotron frequency on the growth rate has been discussed. It has been found that by increasing the thermal velocity of the electron beam, the growth rate for groups I and III trivially decreases, while it increases for group II orbits. Besides, an increase in cyclotron frequency cause growth enhancement for group I orbits, while it present a growth decrement for group II and III orbits.

A study of ASP 30 steel surface modification with high intensity Ti:sapphire laser, operating at 804 nm wavelength and pulse duration of 60 fs, in vacuum ambient, is presented. ASP 30 steel surface variations were studied at laser intensities of 1014 and 1013 W/cm2. The steel target specific surface changes and phenomena observed are: (i) Creation of craters at 1014 W/cm2 intensity; (ii) formation of periodic surface structures only at the reduced intensity of 1013 W/cm2; (iii) chemical surface changes registered only at higher laser intensity, and (iv) occurrence of plasma in front of the surface, including its emission in X-ray region. It can be concluded from this study that the reported laser intensities can effectively be applied for ASP 30 steel surface modification. Careful choosing of laser intensity and pulse count can lead to precise superficial material removal, for example laser intensity ~1013 W/cm2 and low pulse count can lead to ultra-precise surface processing. Generally, femtosecond laser surface modification of ASP 30 steel is non-contact and very rapid compared with traditional modification methods.
