In this paper, a new method for efficient generation of high-energy ion bunches via laser-induced cavity pressure acceleration (LICPA) is examined using one-dimensional particle-in-cell code PIC1D. It is found that for high laser beam intensities of the order of 1022 W/cm2 and for circular light polarization, a substantial increase in parameters of the accelerated ions is obtained when the target is placed inside a special cavity, into which the laser beam is introduced by a small hole. As compared to the pure radiation pressure acceleration scheme, the LICPA scheme leads to an increase in ion energies and the laser-to-ions energy conversion efficiency while the width of the ion energy spectrum are similar for both the schemes. Such a tendency was observed for all carbon targets (from 2 µm to 0.2 µm thick) investigated in the paper. The results of PIC1D simulations agree very well with predictions of the suitably generalized light sail model.

Ignition with the help of a shock wave is performed by the interaction of accelerated plasma block by a petawatt-picosecond (PW-ps) laser, with a solid-state density fuel that it is a new possibility for achieving controlled fusion by inertial confinement. The unexpected production of plasma blocks provides new access to the ignition of solid-state density fuel according to the Chu hydrodynamic model. When the produced plasma block by the PW-ps laser hits the main fuel due to the density differences between the plasma block and the main fuel of the shock wave, this progressive wave increases the density of solidified fuels and reduces the energy of the ignition threshold and increases the flammability. In this study, a new discovery of shock waves has been observed leading to the resonance phenomenon. Nuclear heat shock waves resonance in the side-on ignition of fuel in the internal layer of fuel at x ≠ 0 appears from the exact solution of the hydrodynamic equations with respect to the density profile. This important finding achieves the required ignition temperature for solid-state fuel deuterium–tritium (D–T) in certain energies, with a significant increase due to the resonance of thermonuclear waves. This discovery will facilitate practical experiments on the ignition of advanced solid-state fuels with the accelerated plasma blocks by a PW-ps laser at certain energies.

The laser-driven flyer plate is an important loading technology in high energy physics, shock wave physics, and explosive initiation application. How to generate a high-velocity and intact flyer plate by using the laser is a matter of concern for laser driving. In this study, the multilayer flyer plates (MFPs) of Al/Al2O3/Al and TiO2/Al/Al2O3/Al with adjustable performance were designed and fabricated by magnetron sputtering and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser reflectance spectrometer, and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The effects of the structure and material on the output performance of MFPs were analyzed by photon Doppler velocimetry (PDV) and ultrahigh-speed video. The morphology results showed that the structure of MFPs had uniform and clear boundaries between side-by-side layers. The MFP velocity was controlled in the range of 4.0–6.0 km/s by adjusting the film thickness, structure, and thermite material with 43.1 J/cm2 laser ablation. Among them, the energetic flyers with the thermite ablation layer had the highest final velocity of 5.38 km/s due to the prestored energy of TiO2/Al. By appropriately increasing the thickness of Al2O3 from 0.4 μm to 0.8 μm, the complete flight of the flyer plate to 3.72 mm can be realized. In addition, TiO2/Al thermite film had characteristics of reaction heat release and lower laser reflectivity (72.13%) than the Al layer (80.55%), which explained the velocity enhancement effect of energetic flyer plates. This work provides facile strategy to enhance the output performance of MFPs, which may facilitate the practical applications of laser driving technology.

Femtosecond laser ablation is widely applied in high-precision machining of microholes in aeroengine turbine blades. To further explore the mechanism of action during the laser processing of microholes, numerical simulations were performed on the basis of a molecular dynamics (MD) method coupled with a two-temperature model (TTM). Laser irradiation on the surface of copper for different femtosecond-laser processing parameters is investigated in this work. Through the femtosecond-laser single-pulse central ablation simulation model, the laser energy flux density in a Gaussian laser spot range was discretized and analyzed to calculate the ablation depth at multiple points separately. The cross-sectional morphology of the femtosecond-laser single-pulse ablation pits was approximated and fitted. Finally, a 3D simulation model of the whole process of multiscale femtosecond-laser spiral processing microholes was established by superimposing multipulse femtosecond-laser spiral trajectories. This provides a theoretical basis for analyzing the evolution of geometric parameters and morphological characteristics of the hole during machining with specific laser and process parameters.

Periodical short pulse trains were observed in the oscillation of the waveguide mode free electron laser, which could be explained as a self mode-lock oscillation of the free electron laser.

The spectra of the spontaneous emission and the induced absorption were observed, which were in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

The energy spread of the relativistic electron beam was measured using Thomson back scattering from a high power CO2, laser.

This is a short summary of research on the self-magnetically Bθ-insulated ion diode originally proposed by K. Zieher (1981, 1983, 1984, 1984a). We report the most recent progress. For detailed discussions see the forthcoming publications (Schimassek 1989; Westermann 1989). After the exploratory work of Zieher the efforts of recent years have concentrated on the numerical simulation (Westermann 1988; 1988a; 1988b), the development of detailed diagnostic tools (Rogner & Schultheiss 1986; Kühn & Rogner 1985; Klumpp & Bluhm 1986) and the focusing properties of the Bθ-diode (Citron et al. 1986; Bauer et al. 1987; Schimassek et al. 1988; Westermann 1988c). Experiments and numerical simulations on three modifications of the diode will be reported (version I, II, III).

The energy spectra of a sparse ensemble of electrons scattered by relativistically intense laser pulses are studied numerically by solving the relativistic Newton equations with the Lorentz force generated by an electromagnetic envelope in vacuum. The expressions for the envelope describe focused optical fields, include significant short-pulse corrections, and afford the representation of laser radiation with various types of transverse distributions of amplitude. The dependence of the character of the electron energy spectra on the type of the transverse distribution of laser amplitude is explored. For Gaussian pulses, the electron energy spectra within specific angular ranges tend to either include a relativistic maximum while being localized around it or to have the shapes of evanescent distributions dominated by the cold component. Conversely, the energy spectra of electrons ejected into certain angular ranges by laser pulses having first-order Laguerre profiles combine pronounced cold components and structured strongly relativistic features. The presumed laser pulse transverse structure and the shapes of the calculated electron energy spectra for first-order Laguerre amplitude distributions are shown to match, qualitatively, those reported in a recent experimental study by Kalashnikov et al. in 2015, which revealed the electron energy spectra spanning both the sub-relativistic and the markedly relativistic energy domains.

Laser plasma experiments reveal rich interplay between laser plasma instabilities. The growth of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is one of the most significant constraints of laser fusion experiments. In this paper, a mechanism of stabilization of SBS process due to magnetic anisotropy has been presented. Magnetic anisotropy induced by the temporally exponentially growing nonoscillating magnetic moment from inverse Faraday effect (IFE) has been studied.It has been shown that for interaction of Nd laser (λ = 1.06 μm) on solid deuterium target the SBS growth rate (y) ∼ 3.45 ps and the phase velocities of the incident and scattered electromagnetic (EM) waves have been shown to decay exponentially (∼e∼λ1) in this SBS process resulting in wave-number mismatch.

Evidence will first be presented in favor of the usefulness of coordination number-dependent equations of state of metallic plasmas. After some theoretical discussion of the way such an equation of state may be related to dimer properties, with specific regard to Na and Al, critical point predictions for the alkalis will be brought into contact with experiments. In this context, some results on W will also be surveyed. Structural properties, static and dynamic, will then be considered in relation to transport in both Cu and H plasmas. This will embrace experiments on electrical resistivity in both examples. For H, a simple inference can be extracted about the structure factor, and the discussion will finally be generalized to treat the metalization of solid H.

The acceleration of an electron beam by surface plasma waves (SPW), in the presence of external magnetic field parallel to surface and perpendicular to direction of propagation of SPW has been studied. This wave propagating along the $\hat z$-axis is excited using Kretschmann geometry, having maximum amplitude at the metal–vacuum interface. Equations of motion have been solved for electron energy and trajectory. The electron gains and retains energy in the form of cyclotron oscillations due to the combined effect of the static magnetic field and SPW field. The energy gained by the beam increases with the strength of magnetic field and laser intensity. In the present scheme, electron beams can achieve ~15 KeV energy for the SPW amplitude A1 = 1.6 × 1011 V/m, plasma frequency ωp = 1.3 × 1016 rad/s and cyclotron frequency ωc/ωp = 0.003.

It is expected (Hora & Handel 1987) that the energy spectra of electrons emitted from laserirradiated atoms in low-density gases would be fundamentally different for laser intensities above and below the threshold of a correspondence principle. Below such a threshold, the emission is a quantum mechanical interaction while, in contrast, above the threshold it is a classical process. Both of our earlier experiments (Boreham & Hora 1979; Boreham & Luther-Davies 1979) and those of several others, including some very recent results (Monot et al. 1993) confirm—after some controversy—the existence of such a correspondence principle. Details are discussed.

A 32-year-old hypothesis of the formation of barred-spiral galaxies (Bostick 1957, 1958, 1986; Laurence, 1956) which become coherent-self-exciting homopolar generators has recently gained confirmative support from 3-D, particle-in-cell computer simulations (Nielsen et al. 1979; Buneman et al. 1980; Peratt et al. 1980, 1984, 1986). Such galaxies should be able to convert an appreciable fraction, f, of the energy from their gravitationally-collapsing plasmas to coherently-increasing magnetic energy via their coherent, self-exciting, homopolar-generator action. The following simple calculation shows that the resulting mutually-induced magnetic repulsions (Len's law) between neighboring galaxies is greater than the gravitational attractive forces between the galaxies. The observed expansion of the Universe can be thus simply accounted for without recourse to the ‘Big Bang’ hypothesis, with its unaccounted-for mysteries.

The coefficients Ai, that enter the fit formula for the stopping power (6), are given incorrectly in table 1. The table gives expressions for the quantities Ai2, rather than the coefficients Ai as printed. Therefore, the square root of the given expressions should be computed to obtain Ai. The given accuracy of the fit is reported correctly since it was obtained using the correct coefficients.

Study of even harmonic generation resulting from propagation of whistler pulse in homogeneous high-density quantum plasma immersed in an externally applied magnetic field, using the recently developed quantum hydrodynamic model is presented. The effects of quantum Bohm potential, quantum statistical pressure, and electron spin have been taken into account. The field amplitude of even harmonic of the whistler with respect to fundamental wave and the conversion efficiency for phase-mismatch has been analyzed. The conversion efficiency of harmonic radiation depends on the plasma electron density, magnetic field strength as well as the intensity of whistler pulse. The efficiency increases significantly with an increase in plasma density, magnetic field and whistler wave intensity. Higher conversion efficiency is observed in degenerate plasma for lower values of the static magnetic field as compared with classical plasma.

A high-frequency surface plasma wave (SPW) excited over metallic surface irradiated by a laser beam, can undergo stimulated Compton scattering if phase velocity of daughter plasma wave is equal to the Fermi velocity for metal. The pump SPW ${\rm (}{{\rm \omega} _0},{\vec k_{0{\rm z}}})$ parametrically excites a quasi-electrostatic plasma wave ${\rm (\omega}, {\vec k_{\rm z}})$ and a backscattered sideband SPW ${\rm (}{{\rm \omega} _1},{\vec k_{1{\rm z}}})$ at resonance ω0 = ω − ω1 and ${\vec k_{0{\rm z}}} = {\vec k_{\rm z}} - {\vec k_{1{\rm z}}}$. The growth rate of Compton process increases with the frequency of incident laser and turns out to be 5.425 × 1010 rad/s at laser frequency ω0 = 0.7595 × 1015 rad/s for incident laser amplitude A0L = 11 × 1011 V/m, laser spot size b = 1.38 × 10−5 m, and free electron density of metal n0 = 5.85 × 1028/m3. The excitation of highly damped quasi-electrostatic plasma wave in this parametric process provide a better nonlinear option for surface heating as compared with direct laser heating. The process can also be used for diagnostics purposes.

The interaction of femtosecond ultra-intense laser pulses with clusters increases absorption of the incident laser light compared with the interaction with solid targets and leads to enhanced generation of different quantum beams with unique parameters. Future investigations of such interaction urgently need detailed modeling and optimization of cluster parameters, for instance, in order to obtain the clusters with desired size, or some specific spatial configuration of the target etc. A numerical model of gas-cluster targets production by the nozzle flows of gases and binary mixtures is presented. Some previous results of the model utilization are summarized, and some new results are given. Techniques of experimental verification of the numerical results are discussed.

Recent experimental and theoretical research on intense pulsed particle beams involving the ETIGO Project at the Technological University of Nagaoka is reviewed. Experimentally, we review the following: (1) studies on local divergence angle in parameter space, (2) development of self-magnetically insulated “Plasma-Focus Diode,” (3) beam focusing by z-discharged plasma channel, (3) measurement of ablation process of beam-target interaction, (4) time-resolvable measurement of energy and species, (5) inductive postacceleration of highly neutralized ion beam, (6) construction of new pulse-power machine, and pulse-compression experiment by plasma erosion opening switch. A brief summary is also given on the development of 2.5-dimensional particle-in-cell computer simulation code.

By sophisticated application of particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate the ultimate role of non-linear pulse evolutions in accelerating electrons during the entrance of an intense laser pulse into a preformed density profile. As a key point in our discussions, the non-linear pulse evolutions are found to be very fast even at very low plasma densities, provided that the pulse length exceeds the local plasma wavelength. Therefore, these evolutions are sufficiently developed during the propagation of typical short density scale lengths occurred at high contrast ratios of the pulse, and lead to plasma heating via stochastic acceleration in multi-waves. Further analysis of simulation data at different physical parameters indicates that the rate of evolutions increases with the plasma density leading to higher plasma heating and overgrown energetic electrons. In the same way, shortening the density scale length results into increase in the evolution rate and, simultaneously, decrease in the interaction time. This behavior can describe the observed optimum value of pre-plasma scale length for the maximum electron heating.

The uniform side-on emission of second harmonic radiation has recently been measured from the corona of a laser irradiated plasma with large electron density gradients. A theoretical model has been developed to study the internal electric fields and double layers in such strongly inhomogeneous plasmas. The analytical model shows immediately a density-independent second harmonic term which reproduces very closely the measured intensity of the second harmonic. A detailed numerical evaluation of the term, for a plasma with a linear density profile (permitting Airy solutions), results in a net intensity with small spatial variation but also with both long and short wavelength periodicities exactly as measured. The observed vanishing of the periodicity, when broad band laser sources are used, can then immediately be explained from integration of the standing-wave like oscillations.

The aim of the present work is the further development of the thermodynamics of hydrogen-like plasmas with densities on the order of 1027–1029 m−3 at temperatures of 106−108 K. Therefore, the Jacobi-Padé approximation for the so-called relative energy level shifts is applied to a quasineutral plasma consisting of six-fold and five-fold ionized carbon atoms and electrons. The relative energy level shift of the five-fold ionized carbon is determined by the difference between Coulomb and Debye potential, and by the kinetic energy of the particles. The shift caused by the kinetic energy (KES) has to be found considering the momentum space of the particles, so that nine-fold integrals in phase space have to be calculated. Quantum-physically, former numerical calculations of KES were only performed for particle states with zero angular quantum numbers. In the present work, a detailed, to a large extent analytical analysis of the KES is given for any angular quantum number, enabling also an improved analysis of future further-developed Jacobi-Padé formulae. Relative energy shifts of the bound-states of the fivefold ionized carbon are numerically obtained as function of the Mott parameter of the plasma. Dependencies of the shifts on main quantum numbers and orbital quantum numbers are discussed.
