Recombining plasmas produced by picosecond laser pulses are characterized by measuring ratio of intensities of resonance lines of H- and He-like ions in the plasmas. It is found that the rapidly recombining plasmas produced by picosecond laser pulses are suitable for highgain operation.

Non-equilibrium heat transfer described by a two-step temperature model was developed to study the thermal evolution through target materials irradiated by femtosecond laser pulse. Two-dimensional heat transfer equations were solved numerically. The temperature dependent thermo-physical properties of the electron and the lattice are considered in the model. The Gaussian spatial and temporal distribution of the heat and temperature of the electron and the lattice is presented. The effect of reflectivity, electron — lattice coupling factor, and the spot size was studied using copper targets.

The Nova Upgrade Facility is being designed to achieve inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition and gain. A baseline design of the laser and experimental facilities has been completed, and a development plan, which includes a fully integrated laser demonstration, has been formulated. With adequate funding, the activities in this plan could be completed by late 1993. Construction of the Nova Upgrade beginning at that time would make possible the achievement of ICF ignition before the end of the decade.

Inverse bremsstrahlung absorption in the spherical, quasi-steady corona of a weakly nonuniform laser-irradiated target is considered. Here we have assumed that laser irradiation is almost spherical, justifying a linear analysis in terms of spherical harmonics. Our analysis is applicable for low intensities and short wavelength pulses. Complete results for ablation pressure, mass flow rate, and critical surface location are given in terms of Legendre index.

We study the problem of the amplification of an ultra-short seed pulse via stimulated Raman backscattering (SRB) from a long pump pulse (assumed to have an envelope with a constant amplitude), in an underdense plasma. The SRB interaction couples the pump light wave to a daughter light seed wave propagating in the opposite direction, scattered off an electron plasma wave. In recent numerical simulations, it has been observed that besides stimulated Raman backward scattering (SRBS) and stimulated Raman forward scattering, other high-frequency kinetic instabilities can occur when modified distribution functions exist during the evolution of the system. In particular, we showed the prominent role played by kinetic electrostatic electron nonlinear (KEEN) waves (Afeyan et al., 2004). We continue this work by applying a relativistic Vlasov–Maxwell code to study stimulated KEEN wave scattering (SKEENS) and its role in the SRBS short pulse amplification processes. An analysis of the full spectrum of waves participating in the amplification processes is presented. The absence of spurious noise in grid-based Vlasov codes allows us to follow the evolution of the system with a kinetic (collisionless) description. This affords us a glimpse at the intricate phase-space structures such as trapped particle orbits, which coexist and interact nonlinearly in the electron distribution function.

Simple circuit models for the terminal properties of a ferromagnetic closing switch are derived under the assumptions that the ferromagnetic material may be described by a hysteresis profile and that the driving H-field quickly becomes large. Comparison with results from a full transmission line model indicates that all but the simplest of these approximate models is extremely accurate for a realistic switch.

Foilless diode are widely used in high-power microwave devices, but the traditional foilless diodes have large volume, heavy weight, and high power consumption, which are not conducive to the application of high-power microwave system on mobile platform. In order to reduce the size of the foilless diode, improve the transmission efficiency of electron beams, and reduce the weight and power consumption of the guiding magnetic field system, an axial foilless diode with a composite guiding magnetic field system is developed in this paper. By adjusting the structure size and magnetic field parameters of solenoid coil, permanent magnet, and soft magnet, the configuration of the composite magnetic field is optimized. The diameter of the anode tube is about 40% smaller than that of the original structure, and the weight and power consumption of the guiding magnetic system are about 40% lower than that of the original system when the same axial magnetic field intensity in the uniform region is generated. When the magnetic field strength of the permanent magnet is set as 1.4 T and that of the solenoid coil is in the range of 0.5 T∼1 T, the electron beam transmission efficiency is 100%, and the diode impedance is adjustable in the range of 100 Ω∼240 Ω. The experimental results verify the correctness of the simulation analysis. The experimental results show that when the magnetic field strength of the solenoid coil is 0.98 T (0.5 T) and that of the permanent magnet is 1.4 T, the transmission efficiency of the high-current annular electron beam with a peak voltage of 636 kV (590 kV) and a peak current of 3.3 kA (2.6 kA) is 100%, and the diode impedance is about 194 Ω (220 Ω).

High speed framing camera (HSFC) could be used to capture the image of the electron beams generated by the intense electron-beam accelerator (IEBA), and it is useful to visualize the evolution of discharging and plasma generation phenomenon. So an overview of the application of HSFC on the IEBA is presented. First, we introduce the synchronization problem of HSFC and IEBA, and a synchronization trigger system which could provide a trigger signal with rise time of 17 ns and amplitude of about 5 V is presented. Second, an imaging system based on IEBA, HSFC, and the synchronization trigger system is developed, and it can be used to image the developmental process of plasma in the output vacuum chamber of IEBA and to measure the electrical parameter of IEBA and electrical trigger signal in real time. Furthermore, the imaging system is used to investigate the developmental process of the electron beam of the A-K gap in vacuum under 180 nanosecond quasi-square pulses. It is obtained that the short A-K gap is closed prematurely under long pulse operation with plasma expansion velocity of about 6.25 cm/µs and the light emission in the A-K gap region has the characteristics of “re-ignition” with light duration time about 3800 ns. At last, the discharging process of surface flashover channel of poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) insulator with gap spacing of 170 mm in vacuum under nanosecond quasi-square pulses is studied by the imaging system, and the change of luminosity is analyzed during the surface flashover process.

A maximum electric field E = 2.65 GV/m with an accelerated electron current of 1 KA has been obtained, for pulse lengths of 130 ps, in an electron gun based on Pulse Power Technology. This is the highest accelerating field ever achieved in the presence of such a large current. Measurements of beam emittance and energy from 0.4 to 2.65 MeV show that the scaling of the invariant emittance with electric field and with beam current is consistent with theoretical predictions. A few applications of high-gradient acceleration are discussed.

Good adhesion of thin films to the substrate is obviously necessary for any practical applications. Ion beam and plasma treatment are used to establish enhanced adhesion of thin films at dielectric substrates. It was supposed that both these processes could lead either to removal of contaminant layers as a result of surface heating and desorption or to production of stable chemical bonding within the metal–substrate interface. The article shows that the second process is the dominant factor.

L subshell X-rays of 48Cd and 49In have been measured for the impact of protons with energies from 75 to 250 keV. Obviously, it is found that Lγ2 (abbreviation Lγ2,3 for 48Cd and Lγ2,3,4 for 49In) X-ray emission is enhanced in comparison with Lγ1 X-ray emission. The relative intensity ratios of Lγ2 to Lγ1 X-ray are larger than the atomic data and increase with decreasing proton energy. This is caused by the multiple ionization of outer-shell electrons. To verify this explanation, the enhancements for relative intensity ratio of Lι and Lβ2 to Lα X-ray in experiments are discussed, and the direct ionization cross sections of 4d, 5s, and 5p electrons are calculated using BEA theory.

Irradiation of gases with intense pulses of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) can result in the formation of low-temperature plasmas. During the time of irradiation, various non-thermal processes driven by the EUV photons and photoelectrons take place, leading to the creation of excited states of atoms and ions. Fast relaxation of these states should result in EUV emission within a time comparable to the driving EUV pulse. On the other hand, from our earlier works, a time duration of the emission in an optical range is over an order of magnitude longer. It can be thus expected that the time of EUV emission can be also relatively long. In this work, time-resolved measurements of the EUV emission from low-temperature plasmas induced in He, Ne, and Ar gases were performed. Due to a low intensity of the emitted radiation, a specially prepared detection system, based on an EUV collector and an EUV sensitive photodiode, was employed. In all cases, a time duration of the EUV emission was much longer compared with the driving EUV pulse. Time profiles of the corresponding signals were specific for particular gases. In case of He and Ne plasmas, these time profiles varied with initial densities of gases to be ionized. The corresponding dependence was especially visible in case of plasmas induced in helium. In case of Ar plasmas, such dependence was not revealed.

This issue of Laser and Particle Beams contains a selection of papers presented at the International Workshop on Laser and Plasma Accelerators held at Portovenere, Italy, from September 29 to October 3, 2003. The papers were subjected to the regular refereeing procedure, in conformity with the publication standards concerning originality and quality of presentation for articles in this journal. The papers published here do not cover the full workshop program and therefore do not constitute proceedings in the normal sense. The Workshop was the last in a series sponsored by the International Committee for Future Accelerators to promote international collaboration in the study, development, and exploitation of advanced and novel accelerators.

The dispersion relation of electrostatic waves with phase velocities smaller than the electron thermal velocity is investigated in relativistic temperature plasmas. The model equations are the electron relativistic collisionless hydrodynamic equations and the ion non-relativistic Vlasov equation, coupled to the Poisson equation. The complex frequency of electrostatic modes are calculated numerically as a function of the relevant parameters kλDe and ZTe/Ti where k is the wavenumber, λDe, the electron Debye length, Te and Ti the electron and ion temperature, and Z, the ion charge number. Useful analytic expressions of the real and imaginary parts of frequency are also proposed. The non-relativistic results established in the literature from the kinetic theory are recovered and the role of the relativistic effects on the dispersion and the damping rate of electrostatic modes is discussed. In particular, it is shown that in highly relativistic regime the electrostatic waves are strongly damped.

The effects of shape and thickness of a tin surface layer and of the energy of a 170 ps neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser pulse on the conversion efficiency (CE) into extreme ultraviolet emission in the 13.5 nm region is investigated. Whereas a CE of up to 1.16% into the 2% reflection band of multilayer Mo/Si optics was measured for a bulk Sn target at a laser energy of 25 mJ, significant CE enhancement up to 1.49% is demonstrated for a 200-nm-thick Sn layer on a microstructured porous alumina substrate.

In this paper the classical theory of Above Threshold Ionization (ATI) in the oxygen plasma was used to show how the residual electron energy depends on the laser parameters such as pulse length, wavelength and peak intensity. The value of ATI energy is found to increase with laser wavelength and its intensity. Our study conducted for three cases of τ > 2π/νp, τ = 2π/ωp, and τ < 2π/ωp, where ωp is the plasma frequency, reveals that the ATI energy is decreased for the pulse duration τ ≠ 2π/ωp. Also it is showed how the space charge effect can reduce the residual electron energy to a minimum value, in a suitable condition. By optimizing various parameters, we can generate the cold electrons suitable for the recombination x-ray laser.

The applicability of hydrodynamic models for theoretical description of UV laser ablation of polymers is studied. The plume formation is considered as a first-kind phase transition. In case of strongly absorbing polymers this phase transition occurs as a surface evaporation, and in case of weakly absorbing polymers as a bulk evaporation. The vapor plume is assumed to be transparent for laser radiation, and its expansion is described by the isoentropic hydrodynamic equations. New analytical expressions for ablation (etch) depths per pulse are obtained, which are in good agreement with the available experimental data (Afanasiev et al. 1997).

When generating population density inversion and X-ray gain in the ions of a recombining plasma produced by short laser pulses it is essential to consider the energy level occupation as explicitly time-dependent. In the framework of a four-level model with time-dependent pumping terms, the inversion condition for the Balmer-α transition in H-like ions is derived in closed form, dependent, apart from specified initial conditions, on the atomic number Z, with the free-electron density Ne, the electron temperature Te, the Lyman-α escape probability E21, and the time t. In particular, at a short time after the initial time chosen near the time of the onset of recombination the Balmer-α inversion requires that Ne must be larger than some critical value depending on Te and Z.

In this work, we study the laser propagation in a thermonuclear plasma corresponding to implosion of deuterium-tritium pellets in inertial confinement fusion, by injecting energy provided by high-power laser devices into a quiescent plasma and generating solitons. Having in mind that the electric field inside of plasma can be studied by means of a particular non-linear Schrödinger equation, we solve this equation as an inverse problem, using the Inverse Scattering Transform method, that is a 2 × 2 eigenvalue problem, known as the AKNS scheme, developed by Ablovitz, Kamp, Newell, and Shabat. We obtain the pseudopotentials q and r if we suppose that the eigenvalue is invariant in time, and is representative of a wave eigenvector, obtaining a solution that has a structure of the soliton type. In the process, one change of variable for space and another for time are applied, and the relation between the pseudopotentials is given by r = −q*. Discretization of the non-linear Schrödinger equation, solved by inverse scattering transform are given by Ablovitz et al. (1999). These solitons are generated near the critical layer where w0 ≅ wp, w0 being the laser frequency and wp the plasma frequency, exhibit a change in electronic density profile and are caused by the ponderomotive force of laser radiation.

The achievement of hypervelocities (40 km/s or more) is considered by the electrostatic simultaneous acceleration of dust particles positively and negatively charged. This ensures current neutralization. Beams carrying several grams of matter look feasible. The mutual impact of these macroparticles results in temperatures in the fusion range.
