We show that the countable universal homogeneous meet-tree has a generic automorphism, but it does not have a generic pair of automorphisms.

We show that if M is a countable transitive model of $\text {ZF}$ and if $a,b$ are reals not in M, then there is a G generic over M such that $b \in L[a,G]$ . We then present several applications such as the following: if J is any countable transitive model of $\text {ZFC}$ and $M \not \subseteq J$ is another countable transitive model of $\text {ZFC}$ of the same ordinal height $\alpha $ , then there is a forcing extension N of J such that $M \cup N$ is not included in any transitive model of $\text {ZFC}$ of height $\alpha $ . Also, assuming $0^{\#}$ exists, letting S be the set of reals generic over L, although S is disjoint from the Turing cone above $0^{\#}$ , we have that for any non-constructible real a, $\{ a \oplus s : s \in S \}$ is cofinal in the Turing degrees.

It is known that every non-universal self-full degree in the structure of the degrees of computably enumerable equivalence relations (ceers) under computable reducibility has exactly one strong minimal cover. This leaves little room for embedding wide partial orders as initial segments using self-full degrees. We show that considerably more can be done by staying entirely inside the collection of non-self-full degrees. We show that the poset can be embedded as an initial segment of the degrees of ceers with infinitely many classes. A further refinement of the proof shows that one can also embed the free distributive lattice generated by the lower semilattice as an initial segment of the degrees of ceers with infinitely many classes.

We study the notion of weak canonical bases in an NSOP $_{1}$ theory T with existence. Given $p(x)=\operatorname {tp}(c/B)$ where $B=\operatorname {acl}(B)$ in ${\mathcal M}^{\operatorname {eq}}\models T^{\operatorname {eq}}$ , the weak canonical base of p is the smallest algebraically closed subset of B over which p does not Kim-fork. With this aim we firstly show that the transitive closure $\approx $ of collinearity of an indiscernible sequence is type-definable. Secondly, we prove that given a total $\mathop {\smile \hskip -0.9em ^| \ }^K$ -Morley sequence I in p, the weak canonical base of $\operatorname {tp}(I/B)$ is $\operatorname {acl}(e)$ , if the hyperimaginary $I/\approx $ is eliminable to e, a sequence of imaginaries. We also supply a couple of criteria for when the weak canonical base of p exists. In particular the weak canonical base of p is (if exists) the intersection of the weak canonical bases of all total $\mathop {\smile \hskip -0.9em ^| \ }^K$ -Morley sequences in p over B. However, while we investigate some examples, we point out that given two weak canonical bases of total $\mathop {\smile \hskip -0.9em ^| \ }^K$ -Morley sequences in p need not be interalgebraic, contrary to the case of simple theories. Lastly we suggest an independence relation relying on weak canonical bases, when T has those. The relation, satisfying transitivity and base monotonicity, might be useful in further studies on NSOP $_1$ theories .

Plusieurs auteurs ont déjà considéré l'ultraproduit et l'ultrapuissance en prenant certaines, et non forcément toutes les fonctions qui, à chaque indice i, associent un élément de la base de la relation de rang i (voir par exemple [6]). La généralisation ici considérée, appelée ultraproduit complet (voir §3) est définie à l'aide des isomorphismes locaux. On y retrouve l'essentiel de la théorie de l'ultraproduit classique avec évidemment des exemples plus variés.

We characterize some large cardinal properties, such as μ-measurability and P2(κ)-measurability, in terms of ultrafilters, and then explore the Rudin-Keisler (RK) relations between these ultrafilters and supercompact measures on Pκ(2κ). This leads to the characterization of 2κ-supercompactness in terms of a measure on measure sequences, and also to the study of a certain natural subset, Fullκ, of Pκ(2κ) whose elements code measures on cardinals less than κ. The hypothesis that Fullκ is stationary (a weaker assumption than 2κ-supercompactness) is equivalent to a higher order Löwenheim-Skolem property, and settles a question about directed versus chain-type unions on Pκλ.

Let F be the class of complete, finitely axiomatizable ω-categorical theories. It is not known whether there are simple theories in F. We prove three results of the form: if T ∈ F has a sufficently well-behaved definable set J, then T is not simple. (In one case, we actually prove that T has the strict order property.) All of our arguments assume that the definable set J satisfies the Mazoyer hypothesis, which controls how an element of J can be algebraic over a subset of the model. For every known example in F, there is a definable set satisfying the Mazoyer hypothesis.

In most published systems of modal logic only one or two modal operators occur as undefined constants alongside the primitives of non-modal logic. But in a single informal argument many non-interdefinable modal operators may occur. E.g. in philosophy we may have ‘it is logically true that’, ‘it is analytic that’, and ‘it is physically necessary that’; and in jurisprudence or private international law we may have statements about what it is obligatory or not obligatory to do under several different systems of rules. Moreover even if the contexts of such operators are all referentially opaque, in Quine's sense [1] of being exempt from the substitutivity of truth-functional biconditionals, some are, as it were, opaquer than others, in being exempt from the substitutivity of certain non-truth-functional biconditionals as well.

We characterize the model companions of universal Horn classes generated by a two-element algebra (or ordered two-element algebra). We begin by proving that given two mutually model consistent classes M and N of (respectively ) structures, with , , provided that an -definability condition for the function and relation symbols of holds. We use this, together with Post's characterization of ISP(A), where A is a two-element algebra, to show that the model companions of these classes essentially lie in the classes of posets and semilattices, or characteristic two groups and relatively complemented distributive lattices.

By a variety we mean a class of algebras in a language , containing only function symbols, which is closed under homomorphisms, submodels, and products. A variety is said to be strongly abelian if for any term in , the quasi-identity

holds in .

In [1] it was proved that if a strongly abelian variety has less than the maximal possible uncountable spectrum, then it is equivalent to a multisorted unary variety. Using Shelah's Main Gap theorem one can conclude that if is a classifiable (superstable without DOP or OTOP and shallow) strongly abelian variety then is a multisorted unary variety. In fact, it was known that this conclusion followed from the assumption of superstable without DOP alone.

This paper is devoted to the proof that the superstability assumption is enough to obtain the same structure result. This fulfills a promise made in [2]. Namely, we will prove the following

Theorem 0.1. If is a superstable strongly abelian variety, then it is multisorted unary.

One of the main results of Barwise [2] (see also [7, Chapter VIII]) showed that the s – reflection principle for a set A is equivalent to Σ1-compactness of . Here A is any transitive p.r. closed set, and is the infinitary language on A which allows conjunction and disjunction over arbitrary sets Φ Є A, and finite quantification.

In this paper we consider languages , where B is a Δ0 subset of A, which is like but we allow quantifiers ∀x and ∃x where x is any set of variables indexed by an element of B. A treatment similar to that of [2] for establishes a sufficient, and in some cases necessary, condition for to be Σ1-compact. The use of infinitary Skolem functions is intrinsic to the method, so to avoid a separate development of the rudiments of the Skolem language we actually define to have b-ary relation and function symbols for every b Є B.
