In [14] J. Hirschfeld established the close connection of models of the true AE sentences of Peano Arithmetic and homomorphic images of the semiring of recursive functions. This fragment of Arithmetic includes most of the familiar results of classical number theory. There are two nice ways that such models appear in the isols. One way was introduced by A. Nerode in [20] and is referred to in the literature as Nerode Semirings. The other way is called a tame model. It is very similar to a Nerode Semiring and was introduced in [6]. The model theoretic properties of Nerode Semirings and tame models have been widely studied by T. G. McLaughlin ([16], [17], and [18]).

In this paper we introduce a new variety of tame model called a torre model. It has as a generator an infinite regressive isol with a nice structural property relative to recursively enumerable sets and their extensions to the isols. What is then obtained is a nonstandard model in the isols of the fragment of Peano Arithmetic with the following property: Let T be a torre model. Let f be any recursive function, and let fΛ be its extension to the isols. If there is an isol A with fΛ(A) ϵ T, then there is also an isol B ϵ T with fΛ(B) = fΛ(A).

The global function on finite systems is a new concept defined by Gurevich in [1] and discussed in [2] and [3]. In the last ten years this concept has become more and more useful in computer science and logic. Gurevich also pointed out the importance of global functionals on finite systems. In this paper we will give a brief introduction to the concepts of global functions and global functionals on finite systems.

In studying the natural number system N = 〈N, +,0〉 we often refer to its functions and functionals. There are a lot of books and papers in this area. Kleene in [4] gave a detailed introduction to the recursive functions of N. The functionals of N are normally very difficult to compute because here we need to tell the machine what the input function is, which is not very easy to do. In developing the theory of finite systems the functions and functionals are also very useful. For computing the functionals in finite systems we can take the entire graph of a function as the input, which is not possible in N. We will discuss recursive functions and functionals for finite systems. The definitions of recursive functions are very similar to the case in N, but we will have a very different situation. In N the number of elements is infinite. The number of all possible functions from N to N is the continuum. In a finite system the number of all possible functions is finite. It seems that there is no necessity to define the global functions.

Let σ() denote the number of automorphisms of a model of power ω1. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of trees for the existence of an with . We study the sufficiency of some conditions for . These conditions are analogous to conditions studied by D. Kueker in connection with countable models.

On sait que par le choix d’ un langage suffisamment complexe, toute structure peut admettre une élimination des quantificateurs, malheureusement cette extension du langage peut nous éloigner des phénomènes algébriques. Nous allons nous intéresser à l’ élimination des quantificateurs pour des paires de corps. Dans le cas des paires de corps algébriquement clos et des paires denses de corps réel clos, on obtient une élimination en ajoutant au langage des prédicats ayant une signification algébrique: on peut les exprimer en disant que pour deux ensembles algébriques et donnés, il existe des points du sous-corps rationnels pour et pas pour , ou qu’ un ensemble semi-algébrique donné a des points rationnels sur le sous-corps. Robinson avait déjà abordé de façon informelle le cas des paires denses de corps réel-clos (cf. [Ro 2, p. 198]). Partant du langage des paires de corps ordonnés, enrichi de symboles de relations correspondant à l’ indépendance algébrique, il proposait d’ ajouter pas à pas des fonctions de Skolem Herbrand pour faire disparaitre les quantificateurs existentiels des formules, mais sans préciser le langage obtenu. Ici nous approchons le problème différemment en explicitant dès le départ le langage utilisé.

Grâce à ces résultats nous pourrons étudier le cas des paires séparées de corps réels clos ainsi que des paires de corps valués henseliens. En élargissant la définition d’ ensemble algébrique à tous les symboles du langage, les prédicats relationnels ajoutés ont la même signification que dans le cas des paires de corps algébriquement clos.

En comparant les techniques employées ici avec celles déjà utilisées dans [K], [B], [D 1] et [L], on remarque qu’il est possible de traîter une grande partie de l’ étude (complétude, modèle complétude, élimination des quantificateurs) des paires de corps algébriquement clos, réel-clos ou henseliens en se basant sur des prolongements d’ isomorphismes entre sous-structures dénombrables où l’ une des deux est contenue dans une structure ω1-saturée.

We will show that there is a nontrivial strongly minimal expansion of (ω, s), the natural numbers with successor. Pillay and Steinhorn [1] proved that there is no -minimal expansion of (ω, ≤). This result provides an interesting contrast.

The strongly minimal expansion of (ω, s) is very easy to describe. Consider the order-two permutation of ω, π recursively defined by

The object of this note is to extend to Post's m-valued propositional calculus1 the axiomatization by Anderson and Belnap2 of the 2-valued propositional calculus.

Notation and definitions. We shall use the symbols ∼ and v for the primitives of Post and shall otherwise, except as stated below, use the same notation and definitions as in the previous paper.

We prove the following theorem: If S is a consistent set of axioms for set theory, among whose consequences are the axioms of pairing and extensionality, and if S′ is the extension of S to all classes of sets of S, then S′ is consistent and remains so upon addition of an axiom expressing that the universal class has a well-ordering wherein every non-initial element has an immediate predecessor.

The basic idea will be use of the denumerable model of S guaranteed by the Skolem-Löwenheim theorem to obtain (i) a model of S′ in the domain of classes of natural numbers, and (ii) a correspondence between representatives (in the model of S′) of sets of S′ and natural numbers. One can then select a class of natural numbers in the model of S′ which will well-order (in the sense of the model of S′) the representatives of sets of S′ according to the numbers corresponding to them.

Specifically, let the formulas of S involve only one kind of variable and the sole predicate ‘ϵ’. The formulas of S′ can be thought of as identical with those of S; but the axioms of S′ will consist of (i) those of S with quantifiers restricted to sets by clauses ‘(∃z)[y ϵ z]’, (ii) those provided by the schema ‘(∃x) ▪ y ϵ x ≡y [(∃z)[y ϵ z] ▪ A]’, where ‘A’ is any formula of S′ in which ‘x is not free, and (iii) the axiom of extensionality.
