Pressure-driven flow in the presence of heat transfer through a microchannel patterned with parallel ridges is considered. The coupled effects of curvature and thermocapillary stress along the menisci are captured. Streamwise and transverse thermocapillary stresses along menisci cause the flow to be three-dimensional, but when the Reynolds number based on the transverse flow is small the streamwise and transverse flows decouple. In this limit, we solve the streamwise flow problem, i.e. that in the direction parallel to the ridges, using a suite of asymptotic limits and techniques – each previously shown to have wide ranges of validity thereby extending results by Hodes et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 814, 2017, pp. 301–324) for a flat meniscus. First, we take the small-ridge-period limit, and then we account for the curvature of the menisci with two further complementary limits: (i) small meniscus curvature using boundary perturbation; (ii) arbitrary meniscus curvature but for small slip (or cavity) fractions using conformal mapping and the Poisson integral formula. Heating and cooling the liquid always degrade and enhance (apparent) slip, respectively, but their effect is greatest for large meniscus protrusions, with positive protrusion (into the liquid) being the most sensitive. For strong enough heating the solutions become complex, suggesting instability, with large positive protrusions transitioning first.

The effect of slip surfaces on the laminar–turbulent separatrix of plane Poiseuille flow is studied by direct numerical simulation. In laminar flows, the inclusion of the slip surfaces results in a drag reduction of over 10 %, which is in good agreement with previous studies and the theory of laminar slip flows. Turbulence lifetimes, the likelihood that turbulence is sustained, is investigated for transitional flows with various slip lengths. We show that slip surfaces decrease the likelihood of sustained turbulence compared to the no-slip case, and the likelihood is further decreased as slip length is increased. A more deterministic analysis of the effects of slip surfaces on a transition to turbulence is performed by using nonlinear travelling-wave solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations, also known as exact coherent solutions. Two solution families, dubbed P3 and P4, are used since their lower-branch solutions are embedded on the boundary of the basin of attraction of laminar and turbulent flows (Park & Graham, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 782, 2015, pp. 430–454). Additionally, they exhibit distinct flow structures – the P3 and P4 are denoted as core mode and critical-layer mode, respectively. Distinct effects of slip surfaces on the solutions are observed by the skin-friction evolution, linear growth rate and phase-space projection of transitional trajectories. The slip surface appears to modify the transition dynamics very little for the core mode, but quite considerably for the critical-layer mode. Most importantly, the slip surface promotes different transition dynamics – an early and bypass-like transition for the core mode and a delayed and H- or K-type-like transition for the critical-layer mode. We explain these distinct transition dynamics based on spatio-temporal and quadrant analyses. It is found that slip surfaces promote the prevalence of strong wall-toward motions (sweep-like events) near vortex cores close to the channel centre, inducing an early transition, while long sustained ejection events are present in the region of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$-shaped vortex cores close to the critical layer, resulting in a delayed transition. This should motivate flow control strategies to fully exploit these distinct transition dynamics for transition to turbulence.

We study a gravity-driven wavy liquid film falling down the inner surface of a narrow cylindrical tube in the presence of an active core gas flow. We employ the model of Dietze and Ruyer-Quil (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 762, 2015, pp. 68–109) to investigate the role of surface waves in the occlusion of the tube. We consider four real working liquids and reproduce several experiments from the literature, focusing on conditions where the Bond number is greater or equal to unity. We prove that occlusion is triggered by spatially growing surface waves beyond the limit of saturated travelling-wave solutions, and delimit three possible regimes for a naturally evolving wavy film: (i) certain occlusion, when the liquid Reynolds number is greater than the limit of the spatially most amplified travelling waves. Occlusion is caused by surface waves emerging from linear wave selection (scenario I); (ii) conditional occlusion, when the most amplified waves possess travelling states but longer waves do not. Occlusion is triggered by secondary instability, generating long waves through nonlinear coarsening dynamics (scenario II); and (iii) impossible occlusion, when travelling waves always exist, no matter how great their wavelength. We show that certain occlusion is delayed by gravity and precipitated by a counter-current gas flow, axial viscous diffusion (high-viscosity liquids) and inertia (low-viscosity liquids). The latter two effects are also found to determine whether the occlusion mechanism is dictated by loss of travelling-wave solutions or absolute instability. Finally, we show that occlusion can be prevented through coherent inlet forcing. As a side benefit, we introduce an augmented version of our model based on a localized additional force term that allows representing stable travelling liquid pseudo-plugs.

Gravity-driven liquid film flows laden with a soluble surfactant are considered, and aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) are taken as a case-study. Literature measurements of the critical Reynolds number for the onset of instability are set in perspective with predictions of linear stability theory. The theory is based on a Frumkin model of adsorption equilibrium, modified by the inclusion of finite compressibility of the adsorbed monolayer. Quantitative comparison between data and theory is first attempted in the limit of infinite wavelength. Though wave characteristics are satisfactorily predicted, the theoretical critical Reynolds number is an order of magnitude below measurements. This discrepancy is understood in terms of the large difference between momentum and mass diffusivities and indicates that the assumption of infinite wavelength is far more restrictive for the mass transfer than for the flow problem. Finite-wavelength effects are taken into account by numerical solution of the Orr–Sommerfeld eigenvalue problem, leading to predictions of maximum stabilization in good agreement with the measurements. Introduction of realistic values of monolayer compressibility improves further the agreement at high surfactant loadings. Finally, a strong stabilizing effect of salinity is confirmed.

A multi-scale Euler–Lagrange method was developed and applied to numerically assess cavitation-induced erosion based on the collapse dynamics of Lagrangian bubbles. This approach linked macroscopic and microscopic scales and captured large vapour volumes on an Eulerian frame, while small vapour volumes were treated as spherical Lagrangian bubbles. Interactions between vapour bubbles and the liquid phase were considered via a two-way coupling scheme. A verification and sensitivity study of the developed procedure to transform vapour volumes between Eulerian and Lagrangian frames was performed. First, the developed method was validated for bubble dynamics, using analytical and experimental data. Second, the cavitating flow through an axisymmetric nozzle was simulated using a measurement-based distribution of cavitation nuclei. Details of single bubble collapses were used to assess cavitation erosion. Based on well-recognised fundamental experiments and theoretical considerations from the literature, model assumptions were derived to account for the effects of a bubble’s stand-off distance on the bubble’s motion and its radiated pressure during an asymmetric near-wall bubble collapse. Computed maximum collapse radii of bubbles correlated well with diameters of measured erosion pits. Considering a nonlinear dependence of erosion on impact pressure, calculated erosion potentials compared well to measured erosion depths.

We experimentally investigate the rise velocity of finite-sized bubbles in turbulence with a high energy dissipation rate of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}\gtrsim 0.5~\text{m}^{2}~\text{s}^{-3}$. In contrast to a 30–40 % reduction in rise velocity previously reported in weak turbulence (the Weber number ($We$) is much smaller than the Eötvös number ($Eo$); $We\ll 1<Eo$), the bubble rise velocity in intense turbulence shows a surprising new behaviour: an abrupt transition from an order of magnitude slower to a factor of two faster than rising in an otherwise quiescent medium. This transition occurs when $We$ increases from below one to above one, underscoring the key role played by the turbulence-induced deformation. We also formulate a model based on bubble–eddy coupling, and the results show an excellent agreement with not only our data in intense turbulence but also other works on weak turbulence. The model also helps us to extract the lift and drag coefficients of bubbles in intense turbulence for a wide range of $We$ and Reynolds numbers in situ.

The effects of a vertical static magnetic field on the flow structure and global transport properties of momentum and heat in liquid metal Rayleigh–Bénard convection are investigated. Experiments are conducted in a cylindrical convection cell of unity aspect ratio, filled with the alloy GaInSn at a low Prandtl number of $Pr=0.029$. Changes of the large-scale velocity structure with increasing magnetic field strength are probed systematically using multiple ultrasound Doppler velocimetry sensors and thermocouples for a parameter range that is spanned by Rayleigh numbers of $10^{6}\leqslant Ra\leqslant 6\times 10^{7}$ and Hartmann numbers of $Ha\leqslant 1000$. Our simultaneous multi-probe temperature and velocity measurements demonstrate how the large-scale circulation is affected by an increasing magnetic field strength (or Hartmann number). Lorentz forces induced in the liquid metal first suppress the oscillations of the large-scale circulation at low $Ha$, then transform the one-roll structure into a cellular large-scale pattern consisting of multiple up- and downwellings for intermediate $Ha$, before finally expelling any fluid motion out of the bulk at the highest accessible $Ha$ leaving only a near-wall convective flow that persists even below Chandrasekhar’s linear instability threshold. Our study thus proves experimentally the existence of wall modes in confined magnetoconvection. The magnitude of the transferred heat remains nearly unaffected by the steady decrease of the fluid momentum over a large range of Hartmann numbers. We extend the experimental global transport analysis to momentum transfer and include the dependence of the Reynolds number on the Hartmann number.

Numerical and experimental studies have demonstrated laminar–turbulent transition in hypersonic boundary layers over sharp cones via the modal growth of planar Mack-mode instabilities. However, due to the strong reduction in Mack-mode growth at higher nose bluntness values, the mechanisms underlying the observed onset of transition over the cone frustum are currently unknown. Linear non-modal growth analysis has shown that both planar and oblique travelling disturbances that peak within the entropy layer experience appreciable energy amplification for moderate to large nose bluntness. However, due to their weak signature within the boundary-layer region, the route to transition onset via non-modal growth of travelling disturbances remains unclear. Nonlinear parabolized stability equations (NPSE) and direct numerical simulations (DNS) are used to identify a potential mechanism for transition over a 7-degree blunt cone that was tested in the AFRL Mach-6 high-Reynolds-number facility. Specifically, computations are conducted to study the nonlinear development of a pair of oblique, unsteady non-modal disturbances in the regime of moderately blunt nose tips. Excellent agreement was demonstrated between the NPSE and DNS predictions. Results reveal that, even though the linear non-modal disturbances are primarily concentrated outside the boundary layer, their nonlinear interaction can generate stationary streaks that penetrate and amplify within the boundary layer, eventually inducing the onset of transition via the breakdown of these streaks. The results indicate that a pair of oblique, controlled non-modal disturbances can produce transition at the location measured in the experiment when their initial amplitude is chosen to be approximately 0.15 % of the free-stream velocity.

Townsend’s model of attached eddies for boundary layers is revisited within a quasi-linear approximation. The velocity field is decomposed into a mean profile and fluctuations. While the mean is obtained from the nonlinear equations, the fluctuations are modelled by replacing the nonlinear self-interaction terms with an eddy-viscosity-based turbulent diffusion and stochastic forcing. Under this particular approximation, the resulting fluctuation equations remain linear, enabling solutions to be superposed, the same theoretical idea used in the original attached eddy model. By leveraging this feature, the stochastic forcing is determined self-consistently by solving an optimisation problem which minimises the difference between the Reynolds shear stresses from the mean and fluctuation equations, subject to a constraint that the averaged Reynolds shear-stress spectrum is sufficiently smooth in the spatial wavenumber space. The proposed quasi-linear approximation is subsequently applied to channel flow for Reynolds number $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$ ranging from 500 to 20 000. The best result is obtained when the Reynolds stress is calculated by retaining only the two leading proper orthogonal decomposition modes, which further filters out the modelling artefact caused by the unphysical stochastic forcing. In this case, the resulting turbulence intensity profile and energy spectra exhibit the same qualitative behaviour as direct numerical simulation (DNS) data throughout the entire wall-normal domain, while reproducing the early theoretical predictions of the original attached eddy model within a controlled approximation to the Navier–Stokes equations. Finally, the proposed quasi-linear approximation reveals that the peak streamwise and spanwise turbulence intensities may deviate slightly from the logarithmic scaling with the Reynolds number for $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\gtrsim 10\,000$, and the supporting evidence is presented using the existing DNS data.

In the problem of horizontal convection a non-uniform buoyancy, $b_{s}(x,y)$, is imposed on the top surface of a container and all other surfaces are insulating. Horizontal convection produces a net horizontal flux of buoyancy, $\boldsymbol{J}$, defined by vertically and temporally averaging the interior horizontal flux of buoyancy. We show that $\overline{\boldsymbol{J}\boldsymbol{\cdot }\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}b_{s}}=-\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\langle |\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}b|^{2}\rangle$; the overbar denotes a space–time average over the top surface, angle brackets denote a volume–time average and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}$ is the molecular diffusivity of buoyancy $b$. This connection between $\boldsymbol{J}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\langle |\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}b|^{2}\rangle$ justifies the definition of the horizontal-convective Nusselt number, $Nu$, as the ratio of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\langle |\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}b|^{2}\rangle$ to the corresponding quantity produced by molecular diffusion alone. We discuss the advantages of this definition of $Nu$ over other definitions of horizontal-convective Nusselt number. We investigate transient effects and show that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\langle |\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}b|^{2}\rangle$ equilibrates more rapidly than other global averages, such as the averaged kinetic energy and bottom buoyancy. We show that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\langle |\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}b|^{2}\rangle$ is the volume-averaged rate of Boussinesq entropy production within the enclosure. In statistical steady state, the interior entropy production is balanced by a flux through the top surface. This leads to an equivalent ‘surface Nusselt number’, defined as the surface average of vertical buoyancy flux through the top surface times the imposed surface buoyancy $b_{s}(x,y)$. In experimental situations it is easier to evaluate the surface entropy flux, rather than the volume integral of $|\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}b|^{2}$ demanded by $\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}\langle |\unicode[STIX]{x1D735}b|^{2}\rangle$.

The motion of an assembly of rigid fibres is investigated for different classes of closed streamline flows, steady or time dependent, two-dimensional or three-dimensional. In our study, the dynamics of the fibre assembly is fully coupled to the flow field by means of a state of the art immersed boundary method. We show that, for sufficiently small Stokes times of the assembly, the whole flow gradient tensor can be accurately reconstructed by simply tracking the fibre assembly and measuring suitable fibre velocity differences evaluated at the fibre ends. Our results strongly suggest the possibility of using rigid fibres (or assemblies of them) to perform multi-point flow measures, either in laboratory or in field: future experiments are therefore mandatory to inquire the feasibility of a new ‘fibre tracking velocimetry’ technique.

If a droplet smaller than the capillary length is placed on a substrate with a conical shape, it spreads by itself in the direction of growing fibre radius. We describe this capillary spreading dynamics by developing a lubrication flow approximation on a cone and by using the perturbation method of matched asymptotic expansions. Our results show that the droplet appears to adopt a quasi-static shape and the predictions of the droplet shape and the spreading velocity from the two mathematical models are in excellent agreement. At the contact line regions, a large pressure gradient is generated by the mismatch between the equilibrium contact angle and the apparent contact angle that maintains the viscous flow. It is the conical shape of the substrate that breaks the front/rear droplet symmetry in terms of the apparent contact angle, which is larger at the thicker part of the cone than at its thinner part. Consequently, the droplet is predicted to move from the cone tip to its base, consistent with experimental observations.

A projectile moving in the transitional/intermediate ballistic regime encounters many complex flow phenomena as the flow field contains two blast waves and several flow interfaces. The aerodynamic characteristics of the projectile are highly influenced by the interaction of the projectile with the surrounding flow field. The present study aims to experimentally visualize the flow structures associated with a moving projectile in the immediate vicinity of the launch tube (transitional/intermediate ballistic regime). In this work, the main focus is to investigate three significant phenomena which normally occur in the transitional ballistic regime and have significant effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of the projectile. These are the moving projectile-standing shock interaction termed as unsteady shock diffraction, shock generation due to the transition in the relative projectile Mach number and the moving projectile-moving shock interaction known as the projectile overtaking phenomenon. Experiments are carried out with projectiles of various configurations for various projectile Mach numbers. The flow field is visualized using time-resolved schlieren and shadowgraph flow visualization techniques. The experiments could capture several interesting features of projectile-flow interactions such as the unsteady shock diffraction, shock generation and overtaking phenomenon in various flow regimes through visualization and quantification of the images using image processing techniques.
