We report the dynamics of a droplet levitated in a multi-emitter, single-axis acoustic levitator. The deformation and atomisation behaviour of the droplet in the acoustic field displays myriad complex phenomena, in a series of events. These include the primary breakup of the droplet, wherein it exhibits stable levitation, deformation, sheet formation and equatorial atomisation, followed by its secondary breakup, which could be of various types such as umbrella, bag, bubble or multi-stage breakup. A large number of tiny atomised droplets, formed as a result of the primary and secondary breakup, can remain levitated in the acoustic levitator and exhibit aggregation and coalescence. The visualisation of the interfacial instabilities on the surface of the liquid sheet using both side- and top-view imaging is presented. An approximate size distribution of the atomised droplets is also provided. The stable levitation of the droplet is due to a balance of acoustic and gravitational forces while the resulting ellipsoidal shape of the droplet is a consequence of the balance of the deforming acoustic force and the restoring capillary force. Stronger acoustic forces can no longer be balanced by capillary forces, resulting in a highly flattened droplet, with a thin liquid sheet at the edge (equatorial region). The thinning of the sheet is caused by the differential acceleration induced by the increasing pressure difference between the poles and the equator as the sheet deforms. When the sheet thickness reduces to of the order of a few microns, Faraday waves develop at the thinnest region (preceding the rim), which causes the generation of tiny-sized droplets that are ejected perpendicular to the sheet. The corresponding hole formation results in a perforated sheet that causes the detachment of the annular rim, which breaks due to Rayleigh–Plateau (RP) instability. The radial ligaments generated in the sheet, possibly due to Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability, break into droplets of different sizes. The secondary breakup exhibits Weber number dependency and includes umbrella, bag, bubble or multi-stage types, ultimately resulting in the complete atomisation of the droplets. Both the primary and the secondary breakup of the droplet involve interfacial instabilities such as Faraday, Kelvin–Helmholtz, RT and RP and are well supported by visual evidence.

We present the results of a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of different fluid sheet structures formed during the impingement of a laminar liquid jet on a vial, with a slightly larger diameter than the jet and filled with the same liquid. The present set-up produces all diverse fluid sheet structures, unlike previous experiments that required a deflector disk resulting in no-slip and no-penetration boundary conditions. The water sheet structures are classified into four regimes; regime I: pre-sheet; regime II: puffing, characterized by the periodic formation and destruction of the upward-rising water sheet, an interesting observation not reported earlier; regime III, steady upward, inverted umbrella-like sheet structures; and regime IV, the formation of downward, umbrella-like sheet structures, which can be either open or closed, classically referred to as ‘water bells’. The water sheet structures observed are governed by the non-dimensional parameters: the ratio of vial diameter to the jet diameter at impact ($X$), the capillary number ($Ca$), the Weber number ($We$) and the Froude number ($Fr$). The parametric spaces $X-Ca$, $X-We$ and $X-Fr$ exhibit the demarcation of the four regimes. A semi-empirical expression for the ejection angle of the liquid sheet, primarily responsible for different shapes, is derived in a control volume that provides a theoretical basis for the identified regime diagrams. The puffing water bells in regime II are found to be quasi-steady as the experimental trajectories are in good agreement with the steady-state theory. The rise time of puffing water bells that determines the puffing frequency has been modelled.

Three-dimensional (3-D) clustering characteristics of large-Stokes-number sprays interacting with turbulent swirling co-flows are investigated experimentally. The astigmatic interferometric particle imaging (AIPI) technique is used for simultaneous measurement of the spray droplets position in 3-D space and their corresponding diameter. The Stokes number estimated based on the Kolmogorov time scale varies from 34 to 142. The results show that the degree of droplet clustering plateaus at about 0.4 and at large Stokes numbers. It is obtained that the mean length scale of the clusters normalized by the Kolmogorov length scale follows a power-law relation, and the mean void length scale normalized by the integral length scale plateaus at about 1.5 and at large Stokes numbers. It is shown that the ratio of the number density of the droplets residing within the clusters to the global number density increases with increasing Stokes number and is about 8 for the largest Stokes number examined in this study. The joint characteristics of cluster's normalized volume and the mean diameter of droplets residing within the clusters show that small-volume clusters accommodate droplets with a relatively broad range of diameters. However, large clusters carry droplets with the most probable diameter. The developed AIPI technique in the present study and the corresponding spray characteristics are of importance for engineering applications that aim to understand the 3-D clustering characteristics of large-Stokes-number droplets sprayed into turbulent swirling co-flows.

The depth-integrated horizontal momentum equations and continuity equation are employed to develop a new model. The vertical velocity and pressure can be expressed exactly in terms of horizontal velocities and free-surface elevation, which are the only unknowns in the model. Dividing the water column into elements and approximating horizontal velocities using linear shape function in each element, a set of model equations for horizontal velocities at element nodes is derived by adopting the weighted residual method. These model equations can be applied for transient or steady free-surface flows by prescribing appropriate lateral boundary conditions and initial conditions. Here, only the wave–current–bathymetry interaction problems are investigated. Theoretical analyses are conducted to examine various linear wave properties of the new models, which outperform the Green–Naghdi-type models for the range of water depth to wavelength ratios and the Boussinesq-type models as they are capable of simulating vertically sheared currents. One-dimensional horizontal numerical models, using a finite-difference method, are applied to a wide range of wave–current–bathymetry problems. Numerical validations are performed for nonlinear Stokes wave and bichromatic wave group propagation in deep water, sideband instability, regular wave transformation over a submerged shoal and focusing wave group interacting with linearly sheared currents in deep water. Very good agreements are observed between numerical results and laboratory data. Lastly, numerical experiments of wave shoaling from deep to shallow water are conducted to further demonstrate the capability of the new model.

We consider Euler flows on two-dimensional (2-D) periodic domain and are interested in the stability, both linear and nonlinear, of a simple equilibrium given by the 2-D Taylor–Green vortex. As the first main result, numerical evidence is provided for the fact that such flows possess unstable eigenvalues embedded in the band of the essential spectrum of the linearized operator. However, the unstable eigenfunction is discontinuous at the hyperbolic stagnation points of the base flow and its regularity is consistent with the prediction of Lin (Intl Math. Res. Not., vol. 2004, issue 41, 2004, pp. 2147–2178). This eigenfunction gives rise to an exponential transient growth with the rate given by the real part of the eigenvalue followed by passage to a nonlinear instability. As the second main result, we illustrate a fundamentally different, non-modal, growth mechanism involving a continuous family of uncorrelated functions, instead of an eigenfunction of the linearized operator. Constructed by solving a suitable partial differential equation (PDE) optimization problem, the resulting flows saturate the known estimates on the growth of the semigroup related to the essential spectrum of the linearized Euler operator as the numerical resolution is refined. These findings are contrasted with the results of earlier studies of a similar problem conducted in a slightly viscous setting where only the modal growth of instabilities was observed. This highlights the special stability properties of equilibria in inviscid flows.

Three-dimensional vortex dynamics around two pitching foils arranged in side-by-side (parallel) configurations is numerically examined at a range of separation (gap) distances ($0.5c \leqslant y^* \leqslant 1.5c$). In-phase ($\phi =0$) and out-of-phase ($\phi ={\rm \pi}$) motions are considered for Strouhal numbers of $0.3$ and $0.5$ at a Reynolds number of $8000$. In this work, we show that the foil proximity effect, defined as the influence of one foil on the flow characteristics around the other, induces a spanwise instability in the braids of trailing-edge vortices (TEVs) during their roll-up. This is a newly identified instability that manifests itself in the form of secondary vortical structures with opposite circulation compared with the TEVs formed on the foils, which leads to the formation of double necking on the braids of the TEVs. We provide quantitative evidence linking the formation of these secondary structures to the braid instability. The first neck merges with the TEV, while the second neck detaches from the braid region and moves downstream independently. As the foil proximity effect intensifies (spacing between the foils decreases), secondary vortical structures, as well as the necks, become more prominent, leading to the emergence of three-dimensional wake features. Lastly, the influence of kinematics of the foils on three-dimensionality of the wake is investigated. At higher Strouhal numbers, broader regions of high strain are developed near the trailing edge, associated with the detachment of stronger structures from the braids of TEVs. The characterized instability demonstrates consistent properties for in-phase and out-of-phase motions, albeit with specific differences in dynamics of leading-edge vortices.

We report direct numerical simulations results of the rough-wall channel, focusing on roughness with high $k_{rms}/k_a$ statistics but small to negative $Sk$ statistics, and we study the implications of this new dataset on rough-wall modelling. Here, $k_{rms}$ is the root mean square, $k_a$ is the first-order moment of roughness height, and $Sk$ is the skewness. The effects of packing density, skewness and arrangement of roughness elements on mean streamwise velocity, equivalent roughness height ($z_0$) and Reynolds and dispersive stresses have been studied. We demonstrate that two-point correlation lengths of roughness height statistics play an important role in characterizing rough surfaces with identical moments of roughness height but different arrangements of roughness elements. Analysis of the present as well as historical data suggests that the task of rough-wall modelling is to identify geometric parameters that distinguish the rough surfaces within the calibration dataset. We demonstrate a novel feature selection procedure to determine these parameters. Further, since there is no finite set of roughness statistics that distinguish between all rough surfaces, we argue that obtaining a universal rough-wall model for making equivalent sand-grain roughness ($k_s$) predictions would be challenging, and that each rough-wall model would have its applicable range. This motivates the development of group-based rough-wall models. The applicability of multi-variate polynomial regression and feedforward neural networks for building such group-based rough-wall models using the selected features has been shown.

We study the sedimentation of U-shaped circular disks in the Stokes limit of vanishing inertia. We simulate the flow past such disks using a finite-element-based solution of the three-dimensional Stokes equations, accounting for the integrable singularities that develop along their edges. We show that the purely vertical sedimentation of such disks in their upright (upside-down) U orientation is unstable to perturbations about their pitching (rolling) axes. The instability is found to depend only weakly on the size of the container in which the disks sediment, allowing us to analyse their behaviour based on the resistance matrix which governs the evolution of the disk's six rigid-body degrees of freedom in an unbounded fluid. We show that the governing equations can be reduced to two ordinary differential equations which describe the disk's inclination against the direction of gravity. A phase-plane analysis, the results of which are in good agreement with experiments, reveals that the two instabilities generally cause the disk to sediment along complex spiral trajectories while it alternates between pitching- and rolling-dominated motions. The chirality of the trajectories is set by the initial conditions rather than the (non-chiral) shape of the disk. For certain initial orientations, the disk retains its inclination and sediments along a perfectly helical path. The observed behaviour is fundamentally different from that displayed by flat circular disks which sediment without any reorientation. We therefore study the effect of variations in the disk's curvature to show how in the limit of vanishing curvature the behaviour of a flat disk is recovered.

The dynamics of a shock-induced separation unit generated by a 20$^\circ$ sharp fin placed on a cylindrical surface in a Mach 2.5 flow was investigated. Specifically, the present work investigated the mechanisms that govern the mid-frequency range of separation shock unsteadiness in the fin shock wave–boundary layer interaction (SBLI) unit. Two-dimensional pressure fields were obtained over the cylinder surface spanning the entire fin SBLI unit using high-bandwidth pressure-sensitive paint at 40 kHz imaging rate that allowed probing the low- through mid-frequency ranges of the separation shock unsteadiness. The mean pressure field showed a progressive weakening of the separation shock with downstream distance, which is an artifact of the three-dimensional relief offered by the curved mounting surface. The root-mean-square (r.m.s.) pressure field exhibited a banded structure with elevated $p_{r.m.s.}$ levels beneath the intermittent region, separation vortex and adjacent to the fin root. The power spectral density (PSD) of the surface pressure fluctuations obtained beneath the intermittent region revealed that the separation shock oscillations exhibited the mid-frequency content over the majority of its length. Interestingly, neither the PSD nor the length of the intermittent region varied noticeably with downstream distance, revealing a constant separation shock foot velocity along the entire SBLI. The pressure fluctuation PSD beneath the separation vortex also exhibited the broadband peak at the mid-frequency range of the separation shock motions over the majority of its length within the measurement domain. By contrast, the region adjacent to the fin root exhibited pressure oscillations at a substantially lower frequency compared with the separation shock and the separation vortex. Two-point coherence and cross-correlation analysis provided unique insights into the critical sources and mechanisms that drive the separation shock unsteadiness. The separation vortex and separation shock dynamics were found to be driven by a combination of convecting perturbations that originated from the vicinity of the fin leading edge and the local interactions of the separated flow with the incoming boundary layer. The boundary layer locally strengthened or weakened the convecting pressure perturbations depending on the local momentum fluctuations within the boundary layer.

Zonal flows are mean flows in the east–west direction, which are ubiquitous on planets, and can be formed through ‘zonostrophic instability’: within turbulence or random waves, a weak large-scale zonal flow can grow exponentially to become prominent. In this paper, we study the statistical behaviour of the zonostrophic instability and the effect of magnetic fields. We use a stochastic white noise forcing to drive random waves, and study the growth of a mean flow in this random system. The dispersion relation for the growth rate of the expectation of the mean flow is derived, and properties of the instability are discussed. In the limits of weak and strong magnetic diffusivity, the dispersion relation reduces to manageable expressions, which provide clear insights into the effect of the magnetic field and scaling laws for the threshold of instability. The magnetic field mainly plays a stabilising role and thus impedes the formation of the zonal flow, but under certain conditions it can also have destabilising effects. Numerical simulation of the stochastic flow is performed to confirm the theory. Results indicate that the magnetic field can significantly increase the randomness of the zonal flow. It is found that the zonal flow of an individual realisation may behave very differently from the expectation. For weak magnetic diffusivity and moderate magnetic field strengths, this leads to considerable variation of the outcome, that is whether zonostrophic instability takes place or not in individual realisations.

The collapse of a vapour bubble over a material surface has been widely studied over the past few decades, but a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of the cavitation dynamics and its effects on solid materials at the mesoscale (nanometre up to micrometre), which would be of particular interest in applications exploiting cavitation power, is still lacking. In this work, we adopt a diffuse interface model to describe the microbubble dynamics, and a dynamic plasticity model for the solid. The former is particularly suited to studying the rich phenomenology characterising bubble collapse at the mesoscale, which comprises transitions to supercritical conditions, emission and propagation of shock waves, generation of liquid microjets and topological transitions, whereas the latter is used to characterise the permanent plastic deformation caused by the bubble collapse, and has been augmented to consider inertial effects, to assess whether or not an interaction between elastic and plastic waves may influence the resulting deformation. Results concerning the collapse of a microbubble at different liquid overpressures and initial standoff ratios are discussed, and the elastoplastic wave propagation in the solid, together with plastic deformation, is studied for different cases, depending on elastic and plastic material parameters.

Quasi-Keplerian flow, a special regime of Taylor–Couette co-rotating flow, is of great astrophysical interest for studying angular momentum transport in accretion disks. The well-known magnetorotational instability (MRI) successfully explains the flow instability and generation of turbulence in certain accretion disks, but fails to account for these phenomena in protoplanetary disks where magnetic effects are negligible. Given the intrinsic decrease of the temperature in these disks, we examine the effect of radial thermal stratification on three-dimensional global disturbances in linearised quasi-Keplerian flows under radial gravitational acceleration mimicking stellar gravity. Our results show a thermo-hydrodynamic linear instability for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes across a broad parameter space of the thermally stratified quasi-Keplerian flow. Generally, a decreasing Richardson or Prandtl number stabilises the flow, while a reduced radius ratio destabilises it. This work also provides a quantitative characterisation of the instability. At low Prandtl numbers $Pr$, we observe a scaling relation of the linear critical Taylor number $Ta_c\propto Pr^{-6/5}$. Extrapolating the observed scaling to high $Ta$ and low $Pr$ may suggest the relevance of the instability to accretion disks. Moreover, even slight thermal stratification, characterised by a low Richardson number, can trigger the flow instability with a small axial wavelength. These findings are qualitatively consistent with the results from a traditional local stability analysis based on short wave approximations. Our study refines the thermally induced linearly unstable transition route in protoplanetary disks to explain angular momentum transport in dead zones where MRI is ineffective.

Experiments on the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) in a dual driver vertical shock tube (DDVST) are described. An initially planar, stably stratified membraneless interface is formed by flowing air from above and sulfur hexafluoride from below the interface location using the method of Jones & Jacobs (Phys. Fluids, vol. 9, issue 1997, 1997, pp. 3078–3085). A random three-dimensional, multi-modal initial perturbation is imposed by vertically oscillating the gas column to produce Faraday waves. The DDVST design generates two shock waves, one originating above and one below the interface, with these shocks having independently controllable strengths and interface arrival times. The shock waves have nominal strengths of $M_L=1.17$ and $M_H=1.18$ for the shock wave originating in the light and heavy gas, respectively, with these strengths chosen to result in arrested bulk interface motion following reshock. The influence of the length of the shock-to-reshock time, as well as the order of shock arrival, on the post-reshock RMI is examined. The mixing layer width grows according to $h\propto t^\theta$, where $\theta _H=0.36\pm 0.018$ (95 %) and $\theta _L=0.38\pm 0.02$ (95 %) for heavy and light shock first experiments, respectively, indicating no strong dependence on the order of shock wave arrival. Volume integrated specific turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in the mixing layer versus time is found to decay according to $E_{tot}/\bar {\rho }\propto t^p$ with $p_H=-0.823\pm 0.06$ (95 %) and $p_L=-1.061\pm 0.032$ (95 %) for heavy and light shock first experiments, respectively. Notably, the 95 % confidence intervals do not overlap. Analysis on the influence of the shock-to-reshock time on turbulent length scales, transition criteria, spectra and mixing layer anisotropy are also presented.

Radial unstable stratification is a potential source of turbulence in the cold regions of accretion disks. To investigate this thermal effect, here we focus on two-dimensional Rayleigh–Bénard convection in an annulus subject to radially dependent gravitational acceleration $g \propto 1/r$. Next to the Rayleigh number $Ra$ and Prandtl number $Pr$, the radius ratio $\eta$, defined as the ratio of inner and outer cylinder radii, is a crucial parameter governing the flow dynamics. Using direct numerical simulations for $Pr=1$ and $Ra$ in the range from $10^7$ to $10^{10}$, we explore how variations in $\eta$ influence the asymmetry in the flow field, particularly in the boundary layers. Our results show that in the studied parameter range, the flow is dominated by convective rolls and that the thermal boundary-layer (TBL) thickness ratio between the inner and outer boundaries varies as $\eta ^{1/2}$. This scaling is attributed to the equality of velocity scales in the inner ($u_i$) and outer ($u_o$) regions. We further derive that the temperature drops in the inner and outer TBLs scale as $1/(1+\eta ^{1/2})$ and $\eta ^{1/2}/(1+\eta ^{1/2})$, respectively. The scalings and the temperature drops are in perfect agreement with the numerical data.

Experimental studies on the sloshing of fluid layers are usually performed in rectangular tanks with fixed boundaries. In contrast, the present study uses a 4.76-m-long circular channel, a geometry with open periodic boundaries. Surface waves are excited by means of a submerged hill that, together with the tank, performs a harmonic oscillation. Laboratory measurements are made using 18 ultrasonic probes, evenly distributed over the channel to track the wave propagation. It is shown that a two-dimensional long-wave numerical model derived via the Kármán–Pohlhausen approach reproduces the experimental data as long as the forcing is monochromatic. The sloshing experiments imply a highly complex surface wave field. Different wave types such as solitary waves, undular bores and antisolitary waves are observed. For order one $\delta _{hill} = h_{hill}/h_0$, where $h_0$ is the mean water level and $h_{hill}$ the obstacle's height, the resonant reflections of solitary waves by the submerged obstacle give rise to an amplitude spectrum for which the main resonance peaks can be explained by linear theory. For smaller $\delta _{hill}$, wave transmissions lead to major differences with respect to the more common cases of sloshing with closed ducts having fully reflective ends for which wave transmission through the end walls is not possible. This ultimately results in more complex resonance diagrams and a pattern formation that changes rather abruptly with the frequency. The experiments are of interest not only for engineering applications but also for tidal flows over bottom topography.

We present a simulation-based study of the effect of a passing wave packet on underlying fully developed turbulence. We propose a novel wave-phase-resolved simulation method inspired by Helmholtz decomposition to directly couple the turbulence simulation with instantaneous wave orbital motions without wave-phase averaging. We also introduce a boundary condition treatment for the turbulence at the wave surface, which allows the turbulence simulation to be conducted in a rectangular domain while retaining the wave-phase effect. The results obtained from the proposed method reveal considerable variations in turbulence statistics, including the enstrophy and Reynolds normal stresses, during wave packet passage. Most changes occur rapidly when the narrow bandwidth around the wave packet core passes. Further analyses of the energy spectra indicate that the enhancement of turbulence occurs across a wide range of scales, with the near-surface small-scale motions experiencing the most significant intensification. Meanwhile, large-scale motions with scales comparable to the boundary layer depth are also enhanced. The mechanisms underlying the Reynolds normal stress variation at different length scales are related to the energy transfer from the wave orbital straining to turbulence through production, the pressure–strain effect, the pressure diffusion and the wave advection. By assessing the turbulence statistics and dynamics impacted by a wave packet in detail, this study provides an improved understanding of the response of a developed turbulent flow to a transient wave field. The proposed simulation method also proves to be a promising phase-resolved approach for efficiently modelling the wave effect on turbulence.

We conduct direct numerical simulations (DNS) to study the temporal and spatial developments of the roll waves on a laminar sheet flow of Newtonian fluid. The DNS unveil the physics of the wavefront and show the limitation of the widely used shallow-layer approximations. The most prominent wave, the front runner, is determined by the DNS for the first time in studying the spatial development of the laminar sheet flow with negligible surface tension. Depending on the Froude and Reynolds numbers, the front runner can be a multi-peaked undular bore or a single-peaked non-breaking or breaking wave. The simulation has uncovered an extended region behind the wavefront, where the bed-friction stress is much higher than the corresponding friction in the undisturbed uniform flow. It also produces an uplift velocity needed in the description of wave breaking. For comparison, we also examine the nonlinear development of the instability using two-equation and four-equation shallow-layer models. The two-equation shallow-layer model has produced the bulk of the wave profile but is deficient because it fails to predict the uplift velocity and the substantial increase in bed friction in the frontal region. The four-equation shallow-layer model correctly predicts the bed friction but cannot produce the breaking wave. The simulations also determine the celerity and amplitude of the front runner to follow a linear relationship, qualitatively similar to the roll waves in a turbulent flow.

We study the effect of acceleration and deceleration on the stability of channel flows. To do so, we derive an exact solution for laminar profiles of channel flows with an arbitrary, time-varying wall motion and pressure gradient. This solution then allows us to investigate the stability of any unsteady channel flow. In particular, we restrict our investigation to the non-normal growth of perturbations about time-varying base flows with exponentially decaying acceleration and deceleration, with comparisons to growth about a constant base flow (i.e. the time-invariant simple shear or parabolic profile). We apply this acceleration and deceleration through the velocity of the walls and through the flow rate. For accelerating base flows, perturbations never grow larger than perturbations about a constant base flow, while decelerating flows show massive amplification of perturbations – at a Reynolds number of $500$, properly timed perturbations about the decelerating base flow grow $ {O}(10^5)$ times larger than perturbations grow about a constant base flow. This amplification increases as we raise the rate of deceleration and the Reynolds number. We find that this amplification arises due to a transition from spanwise perturbations leading to the largest amplification to streamwise perturbations leading to the largest amplification that only occurs in the decelerating base flow. By evolving the optimal perturbations through the linearized equations of motion, we reveal that the decelerating base flow achieves this massive amplification through the Orr mechanism, or the down-gradient Reynolds stress mechanism, which accelerating and constant base flows cannot maintain.

Direct numerical simulations of spanwise-rotating turbulent channel flow with a parabolic bump on the bottom wall are employed to investigate the effects of rotation on flow separation. Four rotation rates, $Ro_b := 2\varOmega H/U_b = \pm 0.42$, $\pm$1.0, are compared with the non-rotating scenario. The mild adverse pressure gradient induced by the lee side of the bump allows for a variable pressure-induced separation. The separation region is reduced (increased) when the bump is on the anti-cyclonic (cyclonic) side of the channel, compared with the non-rotating separation. The total drag is reduced in all rotating cases. Through several mechanisms, rotation alters the onset of separation, reattachment and wake recovery. The mean momentum deficit is found to be the key. A physical interpretation of the ratio between the system rotation and mean shear vorticity, $S:=\varOmega /\varOmega _s$, provides the mechanisms regarding stability thresholds $S=-0.5$ and $-$1. The rotation effects are explained accordingly, with reference to the dynamics of several flow structures. For anti-cyclonic separation, particularly, the interaction between the Taylor–Görtler vortices and hairpin vortices of wall-bounded turbulence is proven to be responsible for the breakdown of the separating shear layer. A generalized argument is made regarding the essential role of near-wall deceleration and resultant ejection of enhanced hairpin vortices in destabilizing an anti-cyclonic flow. This mechanism is anticipated to have broad impacts on other applications in analogy to rotating shear flows, such as thermal convection and boundary layers over concave walls.

The present study aims to examine the temporal linear stability analysis of isothermal plane Couette flow over a porous layer using the two-domain approach. The flow in the porous layer is described by the unsteady Darcy–Brinkman equations, whereas it is characterised by the Navier–Stokes equations in the fluid layer. In contrast to the Darcy model, it is observed that the isothermal plane Couette flow becomes unstable for such a superposed system on the inclusion of the Brinkman term. From the stability analysis, the two-dimensional mode is found to be least stable, and two modes of instability, namely porous mode and mixed mode are obtained under the consideration of the Darcy–Brinkman model along with advection term (DBA model). For Darcy number $(\delta )=0.01$, depending on the value of the stress-jump coefficient, mixed mode controls the instability of the system at small values of depth ratio $(\hat {d})$, and it disappears for relatively high values of $\hat {d}$, where the porous mode dominates. In addition, it has been observed that when $\hat {d}=0.1$, the critical mode of instability is found to be mixed for $\delta >0.02$ and porous for $\delta \le 0.02$. The stress-jump coefficient destabilises the flow in terms of energy production through perturbed stresses at the interface. As observed in the case of isothermal plane Poiseuille flow studied by Chang, Chen & Straughan (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 564, 2006, pp. 287–303), here also depth ratio (Darcy number) stabilises (destabilises) the flow. However, this characteristic does not remain valid when the advection term is eliminated from the considered momentum equation. For a certain range of $\hat {d} (\delta )$, the destabilising (stabilising) characteristic of the respective parameters are encountered when the fluid mode of instability prevails.
