A phenomenological description is presented to explain the intermediate and low-frequency/large-scale contributions to the wall-shear-stress (${\tau }_w$) and wall-pressure ($\,{p}_w$) spectra of canonical turbulent boundary layers, both of which are well known to increase with Reynolds number, albeit in a distinct manner. The explanation is based on the concept of active and inactive motions (Townsend, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 11, issue 1, 1961, pp. 97–120) associated with the attached-eddy hypothesis. Unique data sets of simultaneously acquired ${\tau }_w$, ${p}_w$ and velocity-fluctuation time series in the log region are considered, across a friction-Reynolds-number ($Re_{\tau }$) range of $ {O}(10^3) \lesssim Re_{\tau } \lesssim {O}(10^6)$. A recently proposed energy-decomposition methodology (Deshpande et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 914, 2021, A5) is implemented to reveal the active and inactive contributions to the ${\tau }_w$- and $p_w$-spectra. Empirical evidence is provided in support of Bradshaw's (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 30, issue 2, 1967, pp. 241–258) hypothesis that the inactive motions are responsible for the non-local wall-ward transport of the large-scale inertia-dominated energy, which is produced in the log region by active motions. This explains the large-scale signatures in the ${\tau }_w$-spectrum, which grow with $Re_{\tau }$ despite the statistically weak signature of large-scale turbulence production, in the near-wall region. For wall pressure, active and inactive motions respectively contribute to the intermediate and large scales of the $p_w$-spectrum. Both these contributions are found to increase with increasing $Re_{\tau }$ owing to the broadening and energization of the wall-scaled (attached) eddy hierarchy. This potentially explains the rapid $Re_{\tau }$-growth of the $p_w$-spectra relative to ${\tau }_w$, given the dependence of the latter only on the inactive contributions.

Active suspensions encompass a wide range of complex fluids containing microscale energy-injecting particles, such as cells, bacteria or artificially powered active colloids. Because they are intrinsically non-equilibrium, active suspensions can display a number of fascinating phenomena, including turbulent-like large-scale coherent motion and enhanced diffusion. Here, using a recently developed active fast Stokesian dynamics method, we present a detailed numerical study of the hydrodynamic diffusion in apolar active suspensions of squirmers. Specifically, we simulate suspensions of active but non-self-propelling spherical squirmers (or ‘shakers’), of either puller type or pusher type, at volume fractions from 0.5 % to 55 %. Our results show little difference between pulling and pushing shakers in their instantaneous and long-time dynamics, where the translational dynamics varies non-monotonically with the volume fraction, with a peak diffusivity at around 10 % to 20 %, in stark contrast to suspensions of self-propelling particles. On the other hand, the rotational dynamics tends to increase with the volume fraction as is the case for self-propelling particles. To explain these dynamics, we provide detailed scaling and statistical analyses based on the activity-induced hydrodynamic interactions and the observed microstructural correlations, which display a weak local order. Overall, these results elucidate and highlight the different effects of particle activity versus motility on the collective dynamics and transport phenomena in active fluids.

Gravito–capillary waves at free surfaces are ubiquitous in several natural and industrial processes involving quiescent liquid pools bounded by cylindrical walls. These waves emanate from the relaxation of initial interface distortions, which often take the form of a cavity (depression) centred on the symmetry axis of the container. The surface waves reflect from the container walls leading to a radially inward propagating wavetrain converging (focussing) onto the symmetry axis. Under the inviscid approximation and for sufficiently shallow cavities, the relaxation is well-described by the linearised potential-flow equations. Naturally, adding viscosity to such a system introduces viscous dissipation that enervates energy and dampens the oscillations at the symmetry axis. However, for viscous liquids and deeper cavities, these equations are qualitatively inaccurate. In this study, we decompose the initial localised interface distortion into several Bessel functions and study their time evolution governing the propagation of concentric gravito–capillary waves on a free surface. This is carried out for inviscid as well as viscous liquids. For a sufficiently deep cavity, the inward focussing of waves results in large interfacial oscillations at the axis, necessitating a second-order nonlinear theory. We demonstrate that this theory effectively models the interfacial behaviour and highlights the crucial role of nonlinearity near the symmetry axis. This is rationalised via demonstration of the contribution of bound wave components to the interface displacement at the symmetry axis Contrary to expectations, the addition of slight viscosity further intensifies the oscillations at the symmetry axis although the mechanism of wavetrain generation here is quite different compared with bubble bursting where such behaviour is well known (Duchemin et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 14, issue 9, 2002, pp. 3000–3008). This finding underscores the limitations of the potential flow model and suggests avenues for more accurate modelling of such complex free-surface flows.

We have investigated the dynamics of floating tracer in an idealised turbulent quasi-geostrophic ocean by advecting Lagrangian particles in a high-resolution velocity field enhanced by the potential flow associated with vortex stretching. At first order in the Rossby number expansion, this component of the ageostrophic circulation can be derived through a diagnostic equation in terms of the geostrophic velocities. Borrowing methods from the theory of Lagrangian coherent structures, we identify coherent material loops around strong vortex cores using the Lagrangian averaged vorticity deviation (LAVD). Building on studies of clustering in kinematic, stochastic velocity fields, we utilise methods from statistical topography to show that the coherent vortices dominate the distribution of extreme values of the concentration field. We find that the presence of clusters and voids in a coherent vortex depends on more than just the sense of rotation, but also on the full evolution of the vorticity over its lifecycle. We identify the mechanism behind the cluster formation that respects the symmetries of the quasi-geostrophic equations but can be expected to hold robustly in more complicated regimes, due to the simple physical description. The association of cluster formation with vortex stretching implies that LAVD is a particularly relevant metric for floating tracer dynamics. The detection of intense clustering also has implications for reaction rates between ocean-borne flotsam, meaning that our results are relevant to understanding the general risk of floating microplastics and marine biological populations.

We develop a time-dependent conformal method to study the effect of viscosity on steep surface waves. When the effect of surface tension is included, numerical solutions are found that contain highly oscillatory parasitic capillary ripples. These small-amplitude ripples are associated with the high curvature at the crest of the underlying viscous-gravity wave, and display asymmetry about the wave crest. Previous inviscid studies of steep surface waves have calculated intricate bifurcation structures that appear for small surface tension. We show numerically that viscosity suppresses these. While the discrete solution branches still appear, they collapse to form a single smooth branch in the limit of small surface tension. These solutions are shown to be temporally stable, both to small superharmonic perturbations in a linear stability analysis, and to some larger amplitude perturbations in different initial-value problems. Our work provides a convenient method for the numerical computation and analysis of water waves with viscosity, without evaluating the free-boundary problem for the full Navier–Stokes equations, which becomes increasingly challenging at larger Reynolds numbers.

Predicting and perhaps mitigating against rare, extreme events in fluid flows is an important challenge. Due to the time-localised nature of these events, Fourier-based methods prove inefficient in capturing them. Instead, this paper uses wavelet-based methods to understand the underlying patterns in a forced flow over a 2-torus which has intermittent high-energy burst events interrupting an ambient low-energy ‘quiet’ flow. Two wavelet-based methods are examined to predict burst events: (i) a wavelet proper orthogonal decomposition (WPOD) based method which uncovers and utilises the key flow patterns seen in the quiet regions and the bursting episodes; and (ii) a wavelet resolvent analysis (WRA) based method that relies on the forcing structures which amplify the underlying flow patterns. These methods are compared with a straightforward energy tracking approach which acts as a benchmark. Both the wavelet-based approaches succeed in producing better predictions than a simple energy criterion, i.e. earlier prediction times and/or fewer false positives and the WRA-based technique always performs better than WPOD. However, the improvement of WRA over WPOD is not as substantial as anticipated. We conjecture that this is because the mechanism for the bursts in the flow studied is found to be largely modal, associated with the unstable eigenfunction of the Navier–Stokes operator linearised around the mean flow. The WRA approach should deliver much better improvement over the WPOD approach for generically non-modal bursting mechanisms where there is a lag between the imposed forcing and the final response pattern.

We undertake an experimental investigation into the instabilities that emerge when a shear-thinning fluid intrudes a less viscous Newtonian fluid axisymmetrically in a lubricated Hele-Shaw cell. Pre-formed lubrication layers of Newtonian fluid that separate the shear-thinning fluid from the cell walls are incorporated into the experimental design. Provided the lubrication layers remain effective at reducing shear stress, so that extensional stresses dominate the flow of the intruding fluid, the instabilities evolve to form branch-like structures, which exhibit fracturing or tearing behaviour at their troughs. Thicker lubrication layers enable the branches to propagate radially outwards, whilst thinner, less effective ones hinder their development and progression. In the absence of lubrication layers, the shear-thinning fluid spreads radially and remains axisymmetric. For lubricated flows, we show that the number of branches is dependent primarily on the strain rate at the radial distance where they first emerge, and that the number of branches decreases with increasing strain rate.

The three-dimensional stability of two-dimensional natural convection flows in a heated, square enclosure inclined to the horizontal is investigated numerically. First, the computational procedure is validated by comparison of base flow solutions to results reported in literature across a range of inclinations. A bi-global linear stability analysis is then conducted to investigate the stability of these two-dimensional base flows to infinitesimal three-dimensional perturbations, and the effect that buoyancy forces (defined by a buoyancy number $R_N$) and enclosure inclination $\theta$ have on these stability characteristics. The flow is first observed to become three-dimensionally unstable at buoyancy number $R_N = 213.8$ when $\theta$ is $180^\circ$; this increases to $R_N = 2.54 \times 10^4$ at inclination $\theta =58^\circ$. It is found that the two-dimensional base flow is more unstable to three-dimensional perturbations with the critical $R_N$ corresponding to three-dimensional instability being significantly lower than its two-dimensional counterpart across all considered inclinations except $83^\circ \leq \theta \leq 88^\circ$, where the most unstable mode is a two-dimensional oscillatory mode that develops in the boundary layers along the conducting walls. Eight different leading three-dimensional instability modes are identified, with inclinations $58^\circ \leq \theta < 88^\circ$ transitioning through an oscillatory mode, and inclinations $88^\circ \leq \theta \leq 180^\circ$ transitioning through a stationary mode. The characteristics of the primary instability modes corresponding to inclinations $88^\circ \leq \theta \leq 179^\circ$ indicate the presence of a Taylor–Görtler instability.

Models for slow flow of dense granular materials often treat the medium as incompressible, thereby neglecting the role of Reynolds dilatancy. However, recent particle simulations have demonstrated the presence of a significant coupling between the volume fraction and velocity fields. The model of Dsouza & Nott (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 888, 2020, R3) incorporates dilatancy and captures the coupling, but it has thus far lacked experimental validation. In this paper, we provide the first experimental demonstration of dilatancy and its coupling to the kinematics in a two-dimensional cylindrical Couette cell. We find a shear layer near the inner cylinder within which there is significant dilation. Within the shear layer, the azimuthal velocity decays roughly exponentially and the volume fraction rises with radial distance from the inner cylinder. The predictions of the model of Dsouza & Nott (2020) are in good agreement with the experimental data for a variety of roughness features of the outer cylinder. Moreover, by comparing the steady states resulting from different initial volume fraction profiles (but having the same average), we show the inter-dependence of the velocity and volume fraction fields, as predicted by the model. Our results establish the importance of shear dilatancy even in systems of constant volume.

Ekman pumping is a phenomenon induced by no-slip boundary conditions in rotating fluids. In the context of Rayleigh–Bénard convection, Ekman pumping causes a significant change in the linear stability of the system compared with when it is not present (that is, stress-free). Motivated by numerical solutions to the marginal stability problem of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equation (iNSE) system, we seek analytical asymptotic solutions which describe the departure of the no-slip solution from the stress-free one. The substitution of normal modes into a reduced asymptotic model yields a linear system for which we explore analytical solutions for various scalings of wavenumber. We find very good agreement between the analytical asymptotic solutions and the numerical solutions to the iNSE linear stability problem with no-slip boundary conditions.

Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate particle suspension and deposition within turbidity currents. Utilizing Lagrangian particle tracking and a discrete element model, our numerical approach enables a detailed examination of autosuspension, deposition and bulk behaviours of turbidity current. We specifically focus on flow regimes where particle settling and buoyancy-induced hydrodynamics play equally important roles. Our discussion is divided into three parts. Firstly, we examine the main body of the current formed by suspended particles, revealing a temporal evolution consisting of initial slumping, propagation and dissipation stages. Our particle calculation allows for the tracking of autosuspended particles, enabling a deeper understanding of the connection between autosuspension and current propagation through energy budget analysis. In the second part, we delve into particle deposition, highlighting transverse and longitudinal variations. Transverse variations arise from lobe-and-cleft (LC) flow features, while longitudinal variations result from vortex detachment, particularly notable with large-sized particles. We observe that as particle size increases, leading to a particle Stokes number greater than 0.1, rapid particle settling suppresses the LC flow structure, resulting in wider lobes at the deposition height. Lastly, we propose a new scaling law for the propagation speed and current length. Our simulation results demonstrate close agreement with this new scaling law, providing valuable insights into turbidity current dynamics.

The collapse of an initially spherical cavitation bubble near a free surface leads to the formation of two jets: a downward jet into the liquid, and an upward jet penetrating the free surface. In this study, we examine the surprising interaction of a bubble trapped in a stable cavitating vortex ring approaching a free surface. As a result, a single fast and tall liquid jet forms. We find that this jet is observed only above critical Froude numbers ($Fr$) and Weber numbers ($We$) when ${Fr}^2 (1.6-2.73/{We}) > 1$, illustrating the importance of inertia, gravity and surface tension in accelerating this novel jet and thereby reaching heights several hundred times the radius of the vortex ring. Our experimental results are supported by numerical simulations, revealing that the underlying mechanism driving the vortex ring acceleration is the disruption of the equilibrium of high-pressure regions at the front and rear of the vortex ring caused by the free surface. Quantitative analysis based on the energy relationships elucidates that the velocity ratio between the maximum velocity of the free-surface jet and the translational velocity of the vortex ring is relatively stable yet is attenuated by surface tension when the jet is mild.

We investigate experimentally the planar paths displayed by cylinders falling freely in a thin-gap cell containing liquid at rest, by varying the elongation ratio and the Archimedes number of the cylinders, and the solid-to-fluid density ratio. In the investigated conditions, the oscillatory falling motion features two main characteristics: the mean fall velocity $\overline {u_v}$ does not scale with the gravitational velocity, which overestimates $\overline {u_v}$ and is unable to capture the influence of the density ratio on it; and high-amplitude oscillations of the order of $\overline {u_v}$ are observed for both translational and rotational velocities. To model the body behaviour, we propose a force balance, including proper and added inertia terms, the buoyancy force and vortical contributions accounting for the production of vorticity at the body surface and its interaction with the cell walls. Averaging the equations over a temporal period provides a mean force balance that governs the mean fall velocity of the cylinder, revealing that the coupling between the translational and rotational velocity components induces a mean upward inertial force responsible for the decrease of $\overline {u_v}$. This mean force balance also provides a normalization for the frequency of oscillation of the cylinder in agreement with experimental measurements. We then consider the instantaneous force balance experienced by the body, and propose three contributions for the modelling of the vortical force. These can be interpreted as drag, lift and history forces, and their dependence on the control parameters is adjusted on the basis of the experimental measurements.

When atmospheric storms pass over the ocean, they resonantly force near-inertial waves (NIWs), internal waves with a frequency close to the local Coriolis frequency $f$. It has long been recognised that the evolution of NIWs is modulated by the ocean's mesoscale eddy field. This can result in NIWs being concentrated into anticyclones which provide an efficient pathway for NIW propagation to depth. Here we analyse the eigenmodes of NIWs in the presence of mesoscale eddies and heavily draw on parallels with quantum mechanics. Whether the eddies are effective at modulating the behaviour of NIWs depends on the wave dispersiveness $\varepsilon ^2 = f\lambda ^2/\varPsi$, where $\lambda$ is the deformation radius and $\varPsi$ is a scaling for the eddy streamfunction. If $\varepsilon \gg 1$, NIWs are strongly dispersive, and the waves are only weakly affected by the eddies. We calculate the perturbations away from a uniform wave field and the frequency shift away from $f$. If $\varepsilon \ll 1$, NIWs are weakly dispersive, and the wave evolution is strongly modulated by the eddy field. In this weakly dispersive limit, the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin approximation, from which ray tracing emerges, is a valid description of the NIW evolution even if the large-scale atmospheric forcing apparently violates the requisite assumption of a scale separation between the waves and the eddies. The large-scale forcing excites many wave modes, each of which varies on a short spatial scale and is amenable to asymptotic analysis analogous to the semi-classical analysis of quantum systems. The strong modulation of weakly dispersive NIWs by eddies has the potential to modulate the energy input into NIWs from the wind, but we find that this effect should be small under oceanic conditions.

The added mass force resulting from the acceleration of a body in a fluid is of fundamental and practical interest in dispersed multiphase flows. Euler–Lagrange (EL) and Euler–Euler (EE) simulations require closure terms for the added mass force in order to accurately couple the conserved variables between phases. Presently, a more thorough understanding of the added mass force in a multi-particle system is developed based on potential flow resulting in a resistance matrix formulation analogous to Stokesian dynamics. This formulation is then used to generate a dataset of added mass resistance matrices for large systems of randomly generated particles. This methodology is used to create a volume fraction corrected binary model for predicting the added mass force in large systems as well as generate statistics of the added mass force in such systems. This work provides clarification to the theory of the added mass force for particle clouds, and modelling options that may be implemented in existing EL and EE codes.

Fluid dynamics systems driven by dominant, near-periodic dynamics are common across wakes, jets, rotating machinery and high-speed flows. Traditional modal decomposition techniques have been used to gain insight into these flows, but can require many modes to represent key physical processes. With the aim of generating modes that intuitively convey the underlying physical mechanisms, we propose an intrinsic phase-based proper orthogonal decomposition (IPhaB POD) method, which creates energetically ranked modes that evolve along a characteristic cycle of the dominant near-periodic dynamics. Our proposed formulation is set in the time domain, which is particularly useful in cases where the cyclical content is imperfectly periodic. We formally derive IPhaB POD within a POD framework that therefore inherits the energetically ranked decomposition and optimal low-rank representation inherent to POD. As part of this derivation, a dynamical systems representation is utilized, facilitating a definition of phase within the system's near-periodic cycle in the time domain. An expectation operator and inner product are also constructed relative to this definition of phase in a manner that allows for the various cycles within the data to demonstrate imperfect periodicity. The formulation is tested on two sample problems: a simple, low Reynolds number aerofoil wake, and a complex, high-speed pulsating shock wave problem. The method is compared to space-only POD, spectral POD (SPOD) and cyclostationary SPOD. The method is shown to better isolate the dominant, near-periodic global dynamics in a time-varying IPhaB mean, and isolate the tethered, local-in-phase dynamics in a series of time-varying modes.

Super-resolution of turbulence is a term used to describe the prediction of high-resolution snapshots of a flow from coarse-grained observations. This is typically accomplished with a deep neural network and training usually requires a dataset of high-resolution images. An approach is presented here in which robust super-resolution can be performed without access to high-resolution reference data, as might be expected in an experiment. The training procedure is similar to data assimilation, wherein the model learns to predict an initial condition that leads to accurate coarse-grained predictions at later times, while only being shown coarse-grained observations. Implementation of the approach requires the use of a fully differentiable flow solver in the training loop to allow for time-marching of predictions. A range of models are trained on data generated from forced, two-dimensional turbulence. The networks have reconstruction errors which are similar to those obtained with ‘standard’ super-resolution approaches using high-resolution data. Furthermore, the methods are comparable to the performance of standard data assimilation for state estimation on individual trajectories, outperforming these variational approaches at initial time and remaining robust when unrolled in time where performance of the standard data-assimilation algorithm improves.

The stability and dynamics of solitary waves propagating along the surface of an inviscid ferrofluid jet in the absence of gravity are investigated analytically and numerically. For the axisymmetric geometry, the problem is shown to be a conservative system with total energy as the Hamiltonian; however, one of the canonical variables differs from those in the classic water-wave problem in the Cartesian coordinate system. The Dirichlet–Neumann operator appearing in the kinetic energy is then expanded as a Taylor series, described in homogeneous powers of the surface displacement. Based on the further analysis of the Dirichlet–Neumann operator, a systematic procedure is proposed to derive reduced model equations of multiple scales in various asymptotic limits from the full Euler equations in the Hamiltonian/Lagrangian framework. Particularly, a fully dispersive model arising from retaining terms valid up to the quartic order in the series expansion of the kinetic energy, which results in quadratic and cubic algebraic nonlinearities in Hamilton's equations and henceforth is abbreviated as the cubic full-dispersion model, is proposed. By comparing bifurcation curves and wave profiles of various types of axisymmetric solitary waves among different model equations, the cubic full-dispersion model is found to agree well with the full Euler equations, even for waves of considerably large amplitudes. The stability properties of axisymmetric solitary waves subjected to longitudinal disturbances are verified with the newly proposed model. Our analytical results, consistent with Saffman's theory, indicate that in the axisymmetric cylindrical system, the stability exchange subjected to superharmonic perturbations also occurs at the stationary point of the speed-energy bifurcation curve. A series of numerical experiments for the stability and dynamics of solitary waves are performed via the numerical time integration of the model equation, and collision interactions between stable solitary waves show non-elastic features.

In freely decaying stably stratified turbulent flows, numerical evidence shows that the horizontal displacement of Lagrangian tracers is diffusive while the vertical displacement converges towards a stationary distribution, as shown numerically by Kimura & Herring (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 328, 1996, pp. 253–269). Here, we develop a stochastic model for the vertical dispersion of Lagrangian tracers in stably stratified turbulent flows that aims to replicate and explain the emergence of a stationary probability distribution for the vertical displacement of such tracers. More precisely, our model is based on the assumption that the dynamical evolution of the tracers results from the competing effects of buoyancy forces that tend to bring a vertically perturbed fluid parcel (carrying tracers) to its equilibrium position and turbulent fluctuations that tend to disperse tracers. When the density of a fluid parcel is allowed to change due to molecular diffusion, a third effect needs to be taken into account: irreversible mixing. Indeed, ‘mixing’ dynamically and irreversibly changes the equilibrium position of the parcel and affects the buoyancy force that ‘stirs’ it on larger scales. These intricate couplings are modelled using a stochastic resetting process (Evans & Majumdar, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 106, issue 16, 2011, 160601) with memory. More precisely, Lagrangian tracers in stratified turbulent flows are assumed to follow random trajectories that obey a Brownian process. In addition, their stochastic paths can be reset to a given position (corresponding to the dynamically changing equilibrium position of a density structure containing the tracers) at a given rate. Scalings for the model parameters as functions of the molecular properties of the fluid and the turbulent characteristics of the flow are obtained by analysing the dynamics of an idealised density structure. Even though highly idealised, the model has the advantage of being analytically solvable. In particular, we show the emergence of a stationary distribution for the vertical displacement of Lagrangian tracers. We compare the predictions of this model with direct numerical simulation data at various Prandtl numbers $Pr$, the ratio of kinematic viscosity to molecular diffusion.
