This paper presents experimental results on the wake of a propelled bluff body towed at a constant horizontal speed in a linearly stratified fluid. Three regimes of the wake have been found, depending on the angle of attack and on the ratio of drag force to propeller thrust. Most of the experiments were obtained in a first regime where a strong momentum flux is created in the wake, which can be oriented backward or forward depending on the ratio of drag force to thrust of the propeller. The velocity amplitude, wake width and Strouhal number of the wake can be predicted by defining a momentum thickness based on the drag coefficient of the bluff body and the thrust of the propeller. A second regime is obtained for a narrow band of towing velocities, with a relative width of 4%, in which the momentum flux is found to vanish. The wake is characterized by the velocity fluctuations; the scaling exponents of the velocity, vorticity and width of the wake are measured. A third regime is obtained for wakes with a small angle of attack, with a null momentum flux. The mean profile of the wake is found to be asymmetric and its amplitude and wake width are measured. Finally, the relevance of these results to the case of a real self-propelled bluff body is discussed. The presence of weak internal waves or of weak fluctuations of background velocity would lead to a wake in the regime with momentum flux, and would allow prediction of the amplitude, width and Strouhal number of the wake.

Fibres can be coated by passing them through a solution. At low velocity, the thickness of the entrained film is given by the Landau law. For liquids of low viscosity, we discuss the high-speed withdrawal regimes which are of technological interest. We focus on inertial effects and geometrical limitations. New experimental data are presented and discussed by using dimensional arguments. Finally, a classification is proposed.

The motion of a bounded shallow liquid, initially of arbitrary shape, in an arbitrary state of motion and lying on a paraboloid of revolution (including a level surface as a special case) can always be separated into three parts:

1. the motion of the centre of gravity, which is entirely independent of the other motions and is governed by a pair of simple ordinary linear differential equations;

2. an isotropic two-dimensional dilatation and rotation which are also governed by a simple linear differential equation;

3. the motions that remain after removal of the velocity fields associated with the preceding motions; these will be called additional motions.

The additional motions exert a ‘pressure’, determined by their total energy, which tends to increase the spread of the liquid. If the spread does increase then the additional motions lose energy which then appears as energy associated with the dilatation.

The effect of the dilatation and rotation on the additional motions can be described by transformation into a co-ordinate system that rotates and dilates with the liquid. In these co-ordinates, with a properly adjusted time scale, the additional motions satisfy equations that are isomorphic with the original equations of motion; however, the liquid now appears to be lying on a parabola that is always concave upwards.

The flow around a cylinder and a sphere rotating freely in a simple shear was studied experimentally for moderate values of the shear Reynolds number Re. For a freely rotating cylinder, the data were found to be consistent with the results obtained numerically by Kossack & Acrivos (1974), at least for Reynolds numbers up to about 10. Rates of rotation of a freely suspended sphere were also obtained over the same range of Reynolds numbers and showed that, with increasing Re, the dimensionless angular velocity does not decrease as fast for a sphere as it does for a cylinder. In both cases, photographs of the streamline patterns around the objects were consistent with this behaviour. Furthermore, it was found in each case that the asymptotic solutions for Re [Lt ] 1 derived by Robertson & Acrivos (1970) for a cylinder and by Lin, Peery & Schowalter (1970) for a sphere are not valid for Reynolds numbers greater than about 0.1, and that the flow remains steady only up to values of Re of about 6.

A calculation taking into account the interaction of tube wall and ends with a falling sphere is presented, with a view to assessing the change in drag on the sphere due to the end proximity in practical viscometry. It is shown that when the sphere is more than one fall tube radius from the closed end, the extra drag resulting is less than 4·5 × 10−3 of the Faxèn drag, and is therefore usually negligible.

For smaller end-sphere distances the end-effect drag increases rapidly, reaching about 1·5 of the Faxèn drag when the sphere centre is 0·25 tube radius from the end. The drag curve lies substantially below that given by Ladenburg (1907). Satisfactory agreement with experiment is found. It is concluded that with the commonly used types of fall tubes, end effects due to a closed end and an open surface will not be detectable.

An exact result is calculated numerically for the dilute limiting, zero shear viscosity of bimodal suspensions of hard spheres. The required hydrodynamic functions are calculated from recent results for the resistivities of unequal spheres. Both the hydrodynamic and Brownian contributions to the Huggins coefficient exhibit a minimum that is symmetric in mixing volume fraction. The resultant minimum deepens with increasing size ratio. The results are discussed in the light of published measurements of the viscosity for bimodal suspensions and previous phenomenological theories. The reduction of viscosity upon mixing is seen to be a result of near-field hydrodynamic shielding of asymmetric particle pairs. It is also shown that the use of far-field hydrodynamic interactions yields qualitatively incorrect results for the viscosity of binary mixtures. A parametrization of the bimodal results allows an estimation of the effects of suspension polydispersity on the Huggins coefficient. For polydispersities of ten percent or less, the Huggins coefficient is essentially unchanged from the value calculated for an equivalent, monodisperse suspension at equal volume fraction. A parametrization of these results is provided for relating the reduction in Huggins coefficient to the polydispersity index.

The stability of an electrically conducting Boussinesq fluid which is confined between two horizontal planes a distance d apart is investigated. The fluid is heated from below, cooled from above and the whole system rotates rapidly with angular velocity Ωc about a vertical axis. A weak non-uniform horizontal magnetic field, whose strength is measured by the Alfvén angular velocity ΩM [[Lt ] Ωc, see (1.2)] permeates the fluid and corresponds to the flow of a uniform electric current parallel to the rotation axis. When the modified Rayleigh number R [see (2.1)] is greater than zero and q = κ/λ < 1, where κ and λ are the thermal and magnetic diffusivities respectively, instability sets in as a westward-propagating wave with a low frequency of order κ/d2.

When R = 0 and ΩM > 2(ν/λ)½ Ωc, where ν is the viscosity, Roberts & Loper (1979) have isolated an exceptional class of unstable fast inertial waves which grow on the magnetic diffusion time scale τλ = d2/λ. When R < 0 and Γ = τλΩ2M/τc, exceeds some value dependent upon q, a class of unstable slow waves also exists for a range of negative values of R. These waves propagate eastwards (westwards) when q is less (greater) than unity. In this case the fluid is stably stratified and the energy for the disturbance is taken from the magnetic field. The resulting description of the stability boundary for R < 0 in the Γ, R plane extends and clarifies the results of Roberts & Loper (1979), which are valid when both Γ and q are large.

A laboratory experiment involving rip currents generated on a barred beach with periodic rip channels indicates that rip currents contain energetic low-frequency oscillations in the presence of steady wave forcing. An analytic model for the time-averaged flow in a rip current is presented and its linear stability characteristics are investigated to evaluate whether the rip current oscillations can be explained by a jet instability mechanism. The instability model considers spatially growing disturbances in an offshore directed, shallow water jet. The effects of variable cross-shore bathymetry, non-parallel flow, turbulent mixing, and bottom friction are included in the model. Model results show that rip currents are highly unstable and the linear stability model can predict the scales of the observed unsteady motions.

Vortical structures were identified and characterized using velocity fields of turbulent wall-bounded flows. Two direct numerical simulation data sets of fully developed channel flow at Reτ = 934 obtained by del Álamo et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 500, 2004, p. 135) and Reτ = 590 obtained by Moser, Kim & Mansour (Phys. Fluids, vol. 11, 1999, p. 943) as well as dual-plane particle image velocimetry data at z+ = 110 in a zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer at Reτ = 1160 obtained by Ganapathisubramani, Longmire & Marusic (Phys. Fluids, vol. 18, 2006, 055105) were employed. The three-dimensional swirling strength based on the local velocity gradient tensor was employed to identify vortex core locations. The real eigenvector of the tensor was used both to refine the identification algorithm and to determine the orientation of each vortex core. The identification method allowed cores of nearly all orientations to be analysed. Circulation of each vortical structure was calculated using the vorticity vector projected onto the real eigenvector direction. Various population distributions were then computed at different wall-normal locations including core size, orientation, circulation and propagation velocity. The mean radius of the cores identified was found to increase with increasing wall-normal distance, and the mean circulation increases approximately quadratically with eddy radius. Orientations of cores with stronger circulation were distributed over a much narrower range than those for vortices with weaker circulation and were consistent with legs, necks and heads of forward-leaning hairpin structures.

The motion of membrane-bound objects is important in many aspects of biology and surface chemistry. Here we derive some general relations for objects moving in a surface film overlying a fluid of depth H. A solution to the problem of the drag can be obtained from a two-dimensional system of integral equations. Here we focus on the problem of an ideal needle moving edge-on (in the direction of its tip) or broadside-on (perpendicular to the direction of the tip). It is shown that in comparison to the drag on a circular disk a new scaling regime of the drag on a needle arises when the ratio between surface shear viscosity and subphase viscosity $\eta_s/\eta$ is smaller than the length of the needle.

In this study spanwise correlation measurements and smoke flow visualization were performed on vortex shedding behind a normal plate. For Reynolds numbers in a range between 1800 and 27000, the hot-wire signals measured were analysed by a wavelet transformation, from which the instantaneous properties of vortex shedding were obtained and examined. Results show that the phase difference of vortex shedding detected at two spanwise locations, separated by twice the characteristic length, can be as high as 35$^\circ$. A correlation analysis further shows that large spanwise phase differences occur when small fluctuating amplitudes in the vortex shedding signals are measured. Smoke-wire visualization performed at Reynolds number 1800 indicates that the formation of shedding vortex can be divided into two distinct situations, namely, one featuring a long formation region, called Mode L; and the other featuring a short formation region, called Mode S. In Mode S, the three-dimensionality of vortex formation appears to be very pronounced, and the secondary vortices are clearly present in the separated shear layer. The events of Mode S occupy less than 5% of the total time measured, and are called the burst events in this study.

Separating turbulent boundary layers over smooth and rough flat plates are studied by large-eddy simulations. A suction–blowing velocity distribution imposed at the top boundary of the computation domain produces an adverse-to-favourable pressure gradient and creates a closed separation bubble. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness and the free-stream velocity before the pressure gradient begins is 2500. Virtual sand grain roughness in the fully rough regime is modelled by an immersed boundary method. Compared with a smooth-wall case, streamline detachment occurs earlier and the separation region is substantially larger for the rough-wall case, due to the momentum deficit caused by the roughness. The adverse pressure gradient decreases the form drag, so that the point where the wall stress vanishes does not coincide with the detachment of the flow from the surface. A thin reversed-flow region is formed below the roughness crest; the presence of recirculation regions behind each roughness element also affects the intermittency of the near-wall flow, so that upstream of the detachment point the flow can be reversed half of the time, but its average velocity can still be positive. The separated shear layer exhibits higher turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in the rough-wall case, the growth of the TKE there begins earlier relative to the separation point, and the peak TKE occurs close to the separation point. The momentum deficit caused by the roughness, again, plays a critical role in these changes.

An experimental investigation of primary and secondary crossflow instability developing in the boundary layer of a $45^{\circ }$ swept wing at a chord Reynolds number of $2.17\times 10^{6}$ is presented. Linear stability theory is applied for preliminary estimation of the flow stability while surface flow visualisation using fluorescent oil is employed to inspect the topological features of the transition region. Hot-wire anemometry is extensively used for the investigation of the developing boundary layer and identification of the statistical and spectral characteristics of the instability modes. Primary stationary, as well as unsteady type-I (z-mode), type-II (y-mode) and type-III modes are detected and quantified. Finally, three-component, three-dimensional measurements of the transitional boundary layer are performed using tomographic particle image velocimetry. This research presents the first application of an optical experimental technique for this type of flow. Among the optical techniques, tomographic velocimetry represents, to date, the most advanced approach allowing the investigation of spatially correlated flow structures in three-dimensional fields. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of the captured flow fields is applied to this goal. The first POD mode features a newly reported structure related to low-frequency oscillatory motion of the stationary vortices along the spanwise direction. The cause of this phenomenon is only conjectured. Its effect on transition is considered negligible but, given the related high energy level, it needs to be accounted for in experimental investigations. Secondary instability mechanisms are captured as well. The type-III mode corresponds to low-frequency primary travelling crossflow waves interacting with the stationary ones. It appears in the inner upwelling region of the stationary crossflow vortices and is characterised by elongated structures approximately aligned with the axis of the stationary waves. The type-I secondary instability consists instead of significantly inclined structures located at the outer upwelling region of the stationary vortices. The much narrower wavelength and higher advection velocity of these structures correlate with the higher-frequency content of this mode. The results of the investigation of both primary and secondary instability from the exploited techniques agree with and complement each other and are in line with existing literature. Finally, they present the first experimental observation of the secondary instability structures under natural flow conditions.

The energy transfer in a finite-depth gravity-wave spectrum is investigated in the approximation of a narrow spectrum. It is shown that for ocean depths larger than approximately one tenth of the wavelength (kh [ges ] 0·7) the finite-depth case can be reduced to Longuet-Higgins’ (1976) result for an infinitely deep ocean by a similarity transformation involving changes in scale of the angular spreading function and the transfer rate. For shallower water (kh < 0·7) Longuet-Higgins’ expansion technique is no longer applicable without modification, as the nonlinear coupling coefficient develops a discontinuity at the origin of the expansion. In the range kh [ges ] 0·7 both the magnitude and the two-dimensional frequency-directional distribution of the energy transfer are found not to differ significantly (to within variations by a factor of 2) from the case of an infinitely deep ocean. The transformation rules relating the infinite-depth and finite-depth cases may provide a useful guide for constructing parametrizations of the nonlinear transfer for finite-depth wave prediction models.

The linear stability of an inviscid two-dimensional liquid sheet falling under gravity in a still gas is studied by analysing the asymptotic behaviour of a localized perturbation (wave-packet solution to the initial value problem). Unlike previous papers the effect of gravity is fully taken into account by introducing a slow length scale which allows the flow to be considered slightly non-parallel. A multiple-scale approach is developed and the dispersion relations for both the sinuous and varicose disturbances are obtained to the zeroth-order approximation. These exhibit a local character as they involve a local Weber number Weη. For sinuous disturbances a critical Weη equal to unity is found below which the sheet is locally absolutely unstable (with algebraic growth of disturbances) and above which it is locally convectively unstable. The transition from absolute to convective instability occurs at a critical location along the vertical direction where the flow Weber number equals the dimensionless sheet thickness. This critical distance, as measured from the nozzle exit section, increases with decreasing the flow Weber number, and hence, for instance, the liquid flow rate per unit length. If the region of absolute instability is relatively small it may be argued that the system behaves as a globally stable one. Beyond a critical size the flow receptivity is enhanced and self-sustained unstable global modes should arise. This agrees with the experimental evidence that the sheet breaks up as the flow rate is reduced. It is conjectured that liquid viscosity may act to remove the algebraic growth, but the time after which this occurs could be not sufficient to avoid possible nonlinear phenomena appearing and breaking up the sheet.

Linear stability theory is applied to the natural convection boundary layer arising from a vertical plate dissipating a uniform heat flux. By using a numerical procedure which is much simpler than those previously employed on this problem, computer solutions are obtained for a much larger range of the Grashof number (G). For a Prandtl number (σ) of 0·733, it is found that, as G → ∞: the effect of temperature coupling vanishes more rapidly than that of viscosity; the upper branch of the neutral curve is oscillatory but does approach a finite non-zero inviscid asymptote. For moderate and large values of σ, a loop appears in the neutral stability curve as a result of the merging of two unstable modes. As σ → ∞, the mode associated with the uncoupled (i.e. Orr–Sommerfeld) problem rapidly becomes less unstable than that arising from the temperature coupling, with the stability characteristics being independent of the thermal capacity of the plate. For small values of σ, only one unstable mode is found to exist with the coupling effect being negligible in the case of large thermal capacity plates but markedly destabilizing when the thermal capacity is small.

By obtaining numerical results out to G ≈ 1010 for the cases σ = 0·733 and 6·7, it becomes possible to attempt to directly relate the theory to the actual observance of turbulent transition. Based upon comparison with available experimental data, empirical correlations are obtained between the linear stability theory and the régimes in which: (i) the boundary layer is first noticeably oscillatory; (ii) the mean (temporal) flow quantities first deviate significantly from those of laminar flow.

The thermal effects on the wake flow behind a heated circular cylinder operating in the mixed convection regime were investigated experimentally in the present study. The experiments were conducted in a vertical water channel with the heated cylinder placed horizontally and the flow approaching the cylinder downwards. With such a flow arrangement, the direction of the thermally induced buoyancy force acting on the fluid surrounding the heated cylinder would be opposite to the approach flow. During the experiments, the temperature and Reynolds number of the approach flow were held constant. By adjusting the surface temperature of the heated cylinder, the corresponding Richardson number () was varied between 0.0 (unheated) and 1.04, resulting in a change in the heat transfer process from forced convection to mixed convection. A novel flow diagnostic technique, molecular tagging velocimetry and thermometry (MTV&T), was used for qualitative flow visualization of thermally induced flow structures and quantitative, simultaneous measurements of flow velocity and temperature distributions in the wake of the heated cylinder. With increasing temperature of the heated cylinder (i.e. Richardson number), significant modifications of the wake flow pattern and wake vortex shedding process were clearly revealed. When the Richardson number was relatively small (), the vortex shedding process in the wake of the heated cylinder was found to be quite similar to that of an unheated cylinder. As the Richardson number increased to , the wake vortex shedding process was found to be ‘delayed’, with the wake vortex structures beginning to shed much further downstream. As the Richardson number approached unity (), instead of having ‘Kármán’ vortices shedding alternately at the two sides of the heated cylinder, concurrent shedding of smaller vortex structures was observed in the near wake of the heated cylinder. The smaller vortex structures were found to behave more like ‘Kelvin–Helmholtz’ vortices than ‘Kármán’ vortices, and adjacent small vortices would merge to form larger vortex structures further downstream. It was also found that the shedding frequency of the wake vortex structures decreased with increasing Richardson number. The wake closure length and the drag coefficient of the heated cylinder were found initially to decrease slightly when the Richardson number was relatively small (), and then to increase monotonically with increasing Richardson number as the Richardson number became relatively large (). The average Nusselt number () of the heated cylinder was found to decrease almost linearly with increasing Richardson number.

The transition process in a supersonic flat-plate boundary layer at Mach 2 is investigated numerically using linear stability theory (LST) and direct numerical simulations (DNS). The experimental investigations by Kosinov and his co-workers serve as a reference and provide the physical conditions for the numerical set-up. In these experiments, the weakly nonlinear regime of transition was studied. This led to the discovery of asymmetric subharmonic resonance triads, which appear to be relevant for transition in a Mach 2 boundary layer. These triads were composed of one primary oblique wave of frequency 20kHz and two oblique subharmonic waves of frequency 10kHz. While the experimentalists have focused on this new breakdown mechanism, we have found that the experimental data also indicate the presence of another mechanism related to oblique breakdown. This might be the first experimental evidence of the oblique breakdown mechanism in a supersonic boundary layer. With the simulations presented here, the possible presence of oblique breakdown mechanisms in the experiments is explored by deliberately suppressing subharmonic resonances in the DNS and by comparing the numerical results with the experimental data. The DNS results show excellent agreement with the experimental measurements for both linear and nonlinear transition stages. Most importantly, the results clearly show the characteristic features of oblique breakdown. In addition, we also investigated the subharmonic transition route using LST and DNS. When forcing both the subharmonic and the fundamental frequencies in the DNS, a subharmonic resonance mechanism similar to that in the experiments can be observed.

An equilibrium similarity analysis is applied to the transport equation for $\langle(\delta q)^{2}\rangle$ (${\equiv}\,\langle(\delta u)^{2}\rangle + \langle(\delta v)^{2}\rangle + \langle(\delta w)^{2}\rangle$), the turbulent energy structure function, for decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence. A possible solution requires that the mean energy $\langle q^{2}\rangle$ decays with a power-law behaviour ($\langle q^{2}\rangle\,{\sim}\,x^{m}$), and the characteristic length scale, which is readily identifiable with the Taylor microscale, varies as $x^{1/2}$. This solution is identical to that obtained by George (1992) from the spectral energy equation. The solution does not depend on the actual magnitude of the Taylor-microscale Reynolds number $R_{\lambda}$ (${\sim}\,{\langle q^{2}\rangle}^{1/2} \lambda/\nu$); $R_{\lambda}$ should decay as $x^{(m+1)/2}$ when $m < -1$. The solution is tested at relatively low $R_{\lambda}$ against grid turbulence data for which $m \simeq -1.25$ and $R_{\lambda}$ decays as $x^{-0.125}$. Although homogeneity and isotropy are poorly approximated in this flow, the measurements of $\langle(\delta q)^{2}\rangle$ and, to a lesser extent, $\langle(\delta u)(\delta q)^{2}\rangle$, satisfy similarity reasonably over a significant range of $r/\lambda$, where $r$ is the streamwise separation across which velocity increments are estimated. For this range, a similarity-based calculation of the third-order structure function $\langle(\delta u)(\delta q)^{2}\rangle$ is in reasonable agreement with measurements. Kolmogorov-normalized distributions of $\langle(\delta q)^{2}\rangle$ and $\langle(\delta u)(\delta q)^{2}\rangle$ collapse only at small $r$. Assuming homogeneity, isotropy and a Batchelor-type parameterization for $\langle(\delta q)^{2}\rangle$, it is found that $R_{\lambda}$ may need to be as large as $10^{6}$ before a two-decade inertial range is observed.
