The dynamics of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), turbulence dissipation rate (TDR) and turbulence production rate (TPR) are explored in fully developed turbulent channel flow using direct numerical simulations up to $\textit {Re}_\tau \approx 2000$ with minimal computational box for large-scale structures. Time correlation analysis based on volume-averaged TKE and TDR shows a well-defined average time lag, as in periodic/homogeneous turbulence, which, unlike periodic/homogeneous turbulence, appears to be Reynolds-number-dependent. On the basis of a spatio-temporal correlation analysis, we show that plane-averaged TKE fluctuations in the near-equilibrium region are transported towards both the core and near-wall regions, and are positively correlated with plane-averaged TDR fluctuations there with combined wall-distance and time lags. In the path towards the core region, the wall-distance lag is very close to the time lag multiplied by the friction velocity. The path towards the near-wall region has a wide spread of time lags, which increases with Reynolds number. The spatio-temporal correlation paths both towards the core and towards the wall are reproduced when the reference plane TKE is conditionally averaged on either ejections or sweeps, and are in fact stronger in correlation values in the case of ejections, which are better organised than sweeps. While volume-averaged TPR evidently precedes volume-averaged TKE, a more complex picture of non-local space–time correlations between reference plane TKE and TPR is revealed. A mechanistic model is proposed to elucidate these correlations between TKE and TPR through the interaction between the mean shear and the Reynolds shear stress.

We study the stability of a zero-pressure gradient boundary layer subjected to free-stream disturbances by means of local stability analysis. The dataset under study corresponds to a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a flat plate with a sharp leading edge in realistic wind tunnel conditions, with a turbulence level of 3.45 % at the leading edge. We present a method to track the convective evolution of the secondary instabilities of streaks by performing sequential stability calculations following the wave packet, connecting successive unstable eigenfunctions. A scattered nature, in time and space, of secondary instabilities is seen in the stability calculations. These instabilities can be detected before they reach finite amplitude in the DNS, preceding the nucleation of turbulent spots, and whose appearance is well correlated to the transition onset. This represents further evidence regarding the relevance of secondary instabilities of streaks in the bypass transition in realistic flow conditions. Consistent with the spatio-temporal nature of this problem, our approach allows us to integrate directly the local growth rates to obtain the spatial amplification ratio of the individual instabilities, where it is shown that instabilities reaching an $N$-factor in the range [2.5,4] can be directly correlated to more than 65 % of the nucleation events. Interestingly, it is found that high amplification is not only attained by modes with high growth rates, but also by instabilities with sustained low growth rates for a long time.

Understanding the effect of intricate surface wettability conditions on microswimmers is crucial for precisely navigating them across narrow microcirculatory networks. Here, we adopt the spherical squirmer model and Navier slip condition to delineate the microswimmer locomotion under a Poiseuille flow in a slit microchannel. Through a combined analytical–numerical approach utilizing bispherical coordinates and the superposition technique, we resolve the slip-modulated simultaneous hydrodynamic interaction with substrate boundaries. Phase portraits reveal that slip significantly alters propulsion mechanisms, destabilizing centreline stable oscillations of pullers beyond a threshold slip length. Superhydrophobic surfaces suppress near-wall rheotaxis states but preserve centreline focusing, facilitating slip-assisted directed transport without surface accumulation. Under strong background flows, subcritical Hopf bifurcation emerges for pullers at a critical slip length, transitioning dynamics from coexisting stable and unstable states to purely unstable behaviour. Contrastingly, for pushers, slip causes a transition from unstable to either stable or fixed-amplitude oscillations. Increased slip length reduces hydrodynamic repulsion on pullers from the walls by enhancing rotational velocity near the walls, whereas it counteracts the torque that causes unstable oscillations of pushers. Three-dimensional analysis of the trajectories reveals the significant role of the out-of-plane orientation of the microswimmer in its transitions between different swimming states. The presented regime maps offer parametric combinations for specific motion behaviours, guiding the development of smart microfluidic drug delivery systems and preventing biofilm deposition in biomedical devices.

Saturated flow film boiling on a sphere has been numerically studied in this work for both vertical and horizontal flow configurations. The simulations were performed using a numerical methodology developed by the authors for boiling flows on three-dimensional unstructured meshes. For interface capturing, the coupled level set and volume of fluid method is used. The interface evolution, vapour wake dynamics and heat transfer have been thoroughly investigated by varying the saturated liquid flow velocity, sphere diameter and wall superheat. The relative importance of both the buoyancy and the inertial forces is described in terms of the Froude number $(Fr)$. The vapour bubble evolves periodically at low $Fr$ values, while a stable vapour column develops at high $Fr$ values. The interface evolution pattern obtained in the present work is in good agreement with the results of experimental studies available in the literature. For all the values of $Fr$, a stable vapour column develops for a large-diameter sphere and releases vapour bubbles of varying sizes. Furthermore, for a large-diameter sphere, surface capillary waves are observed at the interface, similar to the observations of some of the experimental studies available in the literature. The flow in the liquid and vapour wakes appears to be strongly coupled. The heat transfer in the present work is estimated using the spatially and temporally averaged Nusselt numbers. Finally, an fast Fourier transform analysis of the space-averaged Nusselt number reveals a strong interaction among the different forces.

We investigate the three-dimensional (3-D) flow around and through a porous screen for various porosities at high Reynolds number $Re = {O}(10^4)$. Historically, the study of this problem has been focused on two-dimensional cases and for screens spanning completely or partially a channel. Since many recent problems have involved a porous object in a 3-D free flow, we present a 3-D model initially based on Koo & James (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 60, 1973, pp. 513–538) and Steiros & Hultmark (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 853, 2018 pp. 1–11) for screens of arbitrary shapes. In addition, we include an empirical viscous correction factor accounting for viscous effects in the vicinity of the screen. We characterize experimentally the aerodynamic drag coefficient for a porous square screen composed of fibres, immersed in a laminar air flow with various solidities and different angles of attack. We test various fibre diameters to explore the effect of the space between the pores on the drag force. Using PIV and hot wire probe measurements, we visualize the flow around and through the screen, and in particular measure the proportion of fluid that is deviated around the screen. The predictions from the model for drag coefficient, flow velocities and streamlines are in good agreement with our experimental results. In particular, we show that local viscous effects are important: at the same solidity and with the same air flow, the drag coefficient and the flow deviations strongly depend on the Reynolds number based on the fibre diameter. The model, taking into account 3-D effects and the shape of the porous screen, and including an empirical viscous correction factor that is valid for fibrous screens may have many applications including the prediction of water collection efficiency for fog harvesters.

Experiments were performed to document the complex flow field around and over a $70^{\circ }$ swept fin mounted on a $7^{\circ }$ half-angle right-circular cone in a Mach 6 free-stream. Of particular interest is the turbulent transition of the boundary layer over the swept fin, which is expected to be dominated by a cross-flow instability. Stationary features in the surface temperature distribution over the fin are documented using infrared thermal imaging. These were processed further to determine average spatial Stanton number distributions over the fin. Wavelet analysis of the Stanton number distributions revealed stationary patterns with wavelengths near the fin leading edge that were consistent with linear theory predictions of stationary cross-flow modes. Further from the leading edge, the wavelength of the stationary patterns was observed to increase prior to turbulence onset. Based on these observations, specially designed arrays of discrete roughness elements (DREs) were investigated as a means of delaying turbulence transition with the objective of reducing surface heat flux on the swept fin. The DRE designs followed our previous approach used for cross-flow transition control (Corke et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 856, issue 10, 2018, pp. 822–849; Arndt et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 887, 2020, A30). These focused on either the shorter wavelengths near the leading edge, or the longer wavelengths that developed near turbulence onset. With regard to delaying transition and reducing the surface heat flux, the DREs that focused on the larger wavelengths of stationary modes were most effective. The fin included an array of pressure sensors that were used to document travelling disturbances that could include those associated with travelling cross-flow modes. Phase analysis of the pressure fluctuation time series was used to determine the wavelength, wave angle and phase speed that were consistent with the travelling cross-flow modes. Cross-bicoherence analysis between the stationary and travelling disturbances indicates a nonlinear phase locking that can account for the development of the longer-wavelength stationary features in the surface heat flux, presumed to be due to stationary cross-flow modes, prior to turbulence onset.

We present direct numerical simulations of developing turbulent channel flows subjected to thermal expansion or contraction downstream of a heated or cooled wall. Using different constitutive relations for viscosity we analyse the response of variable property flows to streamwise acceleration/deceleration by separating the effect of streamwise acceleration/deceleration from the effect of wall-normal property variations. We demonstrate that, beyond a certain streamwise location, the flow can be considered in a state of ‘quasi-equilibrium’ regarding semilocally scaled variables. As such, we claim that the development of turbulent quantities due to streamwise acceleration/deceleration is localized to the region of impulsive heating/cooling, while changes in turbulence occurring farther downstream can be attributed solely to property variations. This finding allows us to study turbulence modulation in accelerating/decelerating flows using the semilocal scaling framework. By investigating the energy redistribution among the turbulent velocity fluctuations, we conclude that a change in bulk streamwise velocity has a non-local effect which originates from the change in mean shear and modifies the energy pathways through velocity-pressure-gradient correlations. On the other hand, the wall-normal property gradients have a local effect and act through the modification of the viscous dissipation. We show that it is possible to superimpose and compare the two different effects when using the semilocal scaling framework.

We consider the stability of laminar high-Reynolds-number flow through a planar channel formed by a rigid wall and a heavy compliant wall under longitudinal tension with motion resisted by structural damping. Numerical simulations indicate that the baseline state (with Poiseuille flow and a flat wall) exhibits two unstable normal modes: the Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) mode and a surface-based mode which manifests as one of two flow-induced surface instabilities (FISI), known as travelling wave flutter (TWF) and static divergence (SD), respectively. In the absence of wall damping the system is unstable to TWF, where the neutrally stable wavelength becomes shorter as the wall mass increases. With wall damping, TWF is restricted to long wavelengths through interaction with the most unstable centre mode, while for wall damping greater than a critical value the system exhibits an SD mode with a two branch neutral stability curve; the critical conditions along the upper and lower branches are constructed in the limit of large wall damping. We compute the Reynolds–Orr and activation energy descriptions of these neutrally stable FISI by continuing the linear stability analysis to the following order in perturbation amplitude. We find that both FISI are primarily driven by the working of normal stress on the flexible wall, lower-branch SD has negative activation energy, while upper-branch SD approaches zero activation energy in the limit of large wall damping. Finally, we elucidate interaction between TS and TWF modes for large wall mass, resulting in stable islands within unstable regions of parameter space.

A model is formulated of a two-dimensional migrating, or swimming, inviscid bubble in a viscous fluid whose unsteady displacement is caused by the spreading over its surface of an initial distribution of insoluble surfactant. Assuming small capillary and Reynolds numbers, and a linear equation of state giving the surface tension as a function of surfactant concentration, the quasi-steady Stokes flow around the bubble is found analytically and explicit formulas are determined for the time-dependent bubble speed and its final overall displacement. At infinite surface Péclet number this is done using a complex version of the method of characteristics to solve a complex partial differential equation of Burgers type. For a finite non-zero surface Péclet number, the problem is shown to be linearizable by a complex variant of the classical Cole–Hopf transformation. The formulation allows general statements to be made on the bubble speed and its total net displacement in terms of the initial surfactant distribution. A weak finite-time singularity in the surface activity associated with an isolated clean point on the bubble surface is also identified and studied in detail.

We present an investigation of the fundamental physical processes involved in deep-water gravity wave breaking. Our motivation is to identify the underlying reason causing the deficiency of the eddy viscosity breaking model (EVBM) in predicting surface elevation for strongly nonlinear waves. Owing to the limitation of experimental methods in the provision of high-resolution flow information, we propose a numerical methodology by developing an EVBM enclosed standalone fully nonlinear quasi-potential (FNP) flow model and a coupled FNP plus Navier–Stokes flow model. The numerical models were firstly verified with a wave train subject to modulational instability, then used to simulate a series of broad-banded focusing wave trains under non-, moderate- and strong-breaking conditions. A systematic analysis was carried out to investigate the discrepancies of numerical solutions produced by the two models in surface elevation and other important physical properties. It is found that EVBM predicts accurately the energy dissipated by breaking and the amplitude spectrum of free waves in terms of magnitude, but fails to capture accurately breaking induced phase shifting. The shift of phase grows with breaking intensity and is especially strong for high-wavenumber components. This is identified as a cause of the upshift of the wave dispersion relation, which increases the frequencies of large-wavenumber components. Such a variation drives large-wavenumber components to propagate at nearly the same speed, which is significantly higher than the linear dispersion levels. This suppresses the instant dispersive spreading of harmonics after the focal point, prolonging the lifespan of focused waves and expanding their propagation space.

The interaction of opposite-signed twist waves on vortex tubes can lead to vortex bursting, a process where the core expands into a double ring-like structure with strong swirling flows. Previous works have studied vortex bursting on rectilinear vortices by axially perturbing the initial core size to generate the twist waves, and observed largely axisymmetric bursting dynamics. In this work, we numerically study bursting on vortical structures with curved centrelines, analysing the interaction between the centreline dynamics, twist wave generation and propagation, and vortex bursting. We focus on axially perturbed helical vortex tubes with small radius-to-pitch ratios up to $0.0625$, as well as vortex rings with a large radius-to-core size ratio $10$, both at a circulation-based Reynolds number $5000$. The results show that though the initial twist wave propagation speeds are relatively unaffected by the curvature and torsion of the centreline, the bursting process is altered significantly compared with rectilinear vortices. The self-induced rotation of the centreline of the helical tube induces a non-axisymmetric distortion of the bursting structure, which rapidly breaks up the vortex core into small-scale helical structures. A similar destabilization of the bursting structure also occurs on vortex rings. The enstrophy increase and accelerated energy decay associated with bursting are predominantly determined by the twist wave strength, rather than the curvature and torsion of the centreline. Combined, our findings imply that bursting could play an important role in transferring and dissipating energy of vortical structures in wakes, and turbulent flows in general.

Direct numerical simulations of channel flow and temporal boundary layer at a Reynolds number $Re_{\tau } = 1500$ are used to assess the scale-by-scale mechanisms of wall turbulence. From the peak of turbulence production embedded at the small scales of the near-wall region, spatially ascending reverse cascades are generated that move through self-similar eddies growing in size with the wall distance. These fluxes are followed by spatially ascending forward cascades through detached eddies thus reaching sufficiently small scales where eventually scale energy is dissipated. This phenomenology is shared by both boundary layer and channel flow and is recognized as a robust physical feature characterizing wall turbulence in general. Specific features related to the flow configuration are indeed identified in the outer region. In particular, the central region of channels is characterized by a generalized Richardson energy cascade where large scales are in equilibrium with small scales at different wall distances through a combined forward cascade and spatial flux. On the contrary, the interface region of boundary layers is characterized by an almost two-dimensional physics where spatially ascending reverse cascades sustain long and wide interface structures with a forward cascade that survives only in the wall-normal scales. The overall scenario consists in a variety of scale motions that while protruding from the turbulent core towards the external region, squeeze at the interface thus sustaining vertical shear in a thin layer. The observed multidimensional physics sheds light on the complex interactions between outer entrainment and near-wall self-sustaining mechanisms with possible repercussions for theories.

The dipole–multipole transition in rapidly rotating dynamos is investigated through the analysis of forced magnetohydrodynamic waves in an unstably stratified fluid. The focus of this study is on the inertia-free limit applicable to planetary cores, where the Rossby number is small not only on the core depth but also on the length scale of columnar convection. By progressively increasing the buoyant forcing in a linear magnetoconvection model, the slow magnetic–Archimedean–Coriolis (MAC) waves are significantly attenuated so that their kinetic helicity decreases to zero; the fast MAC wave helicity, on the other hand, is practically unaffected. In turn, polarity reversals in low-inertia spherical dynamos are shown to occur when the slow MAC waves disappear under strong forcing. Two dynamically similar regimes are identified – the suppression of slow waves in a strongly forced dynamo and the excitation of slow waves in a moderately forced dynamo starting from a small seed field. While the former regime results in polarity reversals, the latter regime produces the axial dipole from a chaotic multipolar state. For either polarity transition, a local Rayleigh number based on the mean wavenumber of the energy-containing scales bears the same linear relationship with the square of the peak magnetic field measured at the transition. The self-similarity of the dipole–multipole transition can place a constraint on the Rayleigh number for polarity reversals in the Earth.

This study investigates the scenario of flow past a circular cylinder in proximity to a moving wall (or equally a body translating in still fluid parallel to a stationary wall). Fifty high-fidelity three-dimensional direct numerical simulations are performed over a parameter space of turbulent Reynolds numbers (Re) of 300 to 1000 combined with gap-to-diameter ratios (G/D) of 0.2 to 3. The flow, hydrodynamic and turbulence characteristics over the (Re, G/D) parameter space are examined in detail. Small-scale rib-like mode B structures and alternate vortex shedding are observed for all cases. The streamwise location for the vortex shedding (quantified by the wake recirculation length Lr) varies strongly with both Re and G/D. The variation of Lr with Re and G/D can be explained by the spanwise circulation $\varGamma_z$ fed into the wake, where the variation trends of Lr and $\varGamma_z$ are inversely correlated. The variations of the mean drag and fluctuating lift coefficients are also governed by the variations in Lr and $\varGamma_z$. The total kinetic energy in the wake region reduces drastically as G/D reduces below 0.8, which is contributed collectively by (i) reduction in the strength of the shed vortices, (ii) downstream movement of the location of vortex shedding and (iii) associated delayed generation of streamwise vortices. The present results on a moving wall also help to explain several flow and hydrodynamic characteristics reported in the literature for a stationary wall, because the moving wall eliminates the complex wall boundary layer and retains a ‘clean’ near-wall effect.

A Lagrangian approach to both hydrostatic non-dispersive in the short-wave range and non-hydrostatic dispersive rotating shallow-water magnetohydrodynamics is developed, and used to analyse weakly and fully nonlinear waves described by the model. Hyperbolic structure in the non-dispersive case is displayed and Riemann invariants are constructed. Characteristic equations are used to establish criteria of breaking and formation of shocks by magneto-gravity waves, and conditions of the appearance of contact discontinuities in Alfvén waves. As in the case of non-magnetic rotating shallow water, rotation cannot prevent breaking. The Lagrangian equations of the model are reduced to a single partial differential ‘master’ equation, which is used to analyse the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves of both families, with or without weak rotation, and with or without weak short-wave dispersion. Corresponding modulation equations are constructed and their main properties sketched. The same master equation is used to obtain fully nonlinear finite-amplitude wave solutions in particular cases of no short-wave dispersion or no rotation.

The geometrical properties of streamlines, such as the curvatures, directions and positions, are studied in steady inviscid compressible flow fields via differential geometry theories and conservation laws. The influences of the streamline geometries on the flow speeds and pressures are also identified and discussed. By transforming the streamlines to fill the domain and satisfy the boundary conditions, a unified geometry-based solver, the streamline transformation method, is proposed for both subsonic and supersonic regions. The governing equations and boundary conditions along streamlines and shock waves are also derived. This method is verified by numerical results of three typical flow fields, including the subsonic channel flow, the supersonic downstream of attached shock waves and especially the subsonic/supersonic downstream of detached bow shock waves. Both two-dimensional planar and axisymmetric flow fields are considered. Compared with the results from computational fluid dynamics, good agreements are achieved by this method, while fewer computational resources, by an order of magnitude, are consumed. Features of these flow fields are also analysed from a geometrical perspective, such as flow speeds and pressures deviated by the wall curvatures, and three-dimensional effects in the after-shock flow fields. For a hyperbolic-shaped bow shock wave, the stand-off distances and the transitions from subsonic to supersonic regions are also discussed. As indicated by the accuracy, efficiency and applicability in a wide range of flow speeds, the streamline transformation method would be a potential candidate for the theoretical analysis and inverse design of high-speed flow fields, especially where the subsonic regions exist downstream of strong shock waves.

Shear-induced self-diffusion is a fundamental mode of transport in granular flows. Yet its critical behaviour and dependence on the particle solid fraction are still unclear. Here, we rationalize these dependencies by performing two-dimensional pressure-imposed numerical simulations of dense non-Brownian frictional suspensions. Our results, combined with existing numerical data on inertial granular flows, show that the shear-induced diffusion coefficients of both systems can be captured by a single function of the distance to jamming. They further show that the grain diffusive behaviour is underpinned by a specific random walk process, having a constant elementary step length driven at a frequency that increases with the solid fraction. The proposed scaling laws pave the way for a better understanding of mixing processes in granular media.

Small heavy particles cannot be attracted into a region of closed streamlines in a non-accelerating frame (Sapsis & Haller, Chaos, vol. 20, issue 1, 2010, 017515). In a rotating system of vortices, however, particles can get trapped (Angilella, Physica D, vol. 239, issue 18, 2010, pp. 1789–1797) in the vicinity of vortices. We perform numerical simulations to examine trapping of inertial particles in a prototypical rotating flow described by a rotating pair of Lamb–Oseen vortices of identical strength, in the absence of gravity. Our parameter space includes the particle Stokes number $St$, which is a measure of the particle's inertia, and a density parameter $R$, which measures the particle's density relative to the fluid. In particular, we study the regime $0< R<1$ and $0< St<1$, which corresponds to an inertial particle that is finitely denser than the fluid. We show that in this regime, a significant fraction of particles can be trapped indefinitely close to the vortices, and display extreme clustering into objects of smaller dimension: attracting fixed points and limit cycles of different periods including chaotic attractors. As $St$ increases for a given $R$, we may have an incomplete or complete period-doubling route to chaos, as well as an unusual period-halving route back to a fixed point attractor. The fraction of trapped particles can be a non-monotonic function of $St$, and we may even have windows in $St$ for which no particle trapping occurs. At $St$ larger than a critical value, beyond which trapping ceases to exist, significant fractions of particles can spend long but finite times in the vortex vicinity. The inclusion of the Basset–Boussinesq history (BBH) force is imperative in our study due to the finite density of the particle. We observe that the BBH force significantly increases the basin of attraction over which trapping occurs, and also widens the range of $St$ for which trapping can be realised. Extreme clustering can be of significance in a host of physical applications, including planetesimal formation by aggregation of dust in protoplanetary discs, and aggregation of phytoplankton in the ocean. Our findings in the prototypical model provide impetus to conduct experiments and further numerical investigations to understand clustering of inertial particles.

The presence of large-scale coherent structures can significantly impact the dynamics of a turbulent flow field and the behaviour of a flame stabilized in that flow. The goal of this study is to analyse how increasing free-stream turbulence can change the response of the flow to longitudinal acoustic excitation of varying amplitudes. We study the flow in the wake of a cylindrical bluff body at both non-reacting and reacting conditions, as the presence of a flame can significantly alter the global stability of the flow. The frequency of longitudinal acoustic excitation is set to match the natural frequency of anti-symmetric vortex shedding for this configuration and we vary the free-stream turbulence using perforated plates upstream of the bluff body. The results show that varying the level of free-stream turbulence can influence not only the amplitude of the coherent flow response, but also the symmetry of vortex shedding in the presence of longitudinal acoustic excitation. Increasing the turbulence intensity can fundamentally change the structure of the time-averaged flow and can directly impact the coherent flow response in two ways. First, increasing turbulence intensity can enhance the amplitude of the natural anti-symmetric vortex shedding mode in the wake. Second, increasing turbulence intensity weakens the symmetric response of the flow to the longitudinal acoustic excitation. In the non-reacting and reacting conditions, both symmetric and anti-symmetric modes are present and are characterized using a spectral proper orthogonal decomposition. We see evidence of interaction between the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes, which leads to an interference pattern in the coherent vorticity response in the shear layers. We conclude by presenting a conceptual model for the influence that turbulence has on these flows.
