The development of a bubble plume from a vertical gas-evolving electrode is driven by buoyancy and hydrodynamic bubble dispersion. This canonical fluid mechanics problem is relevant for both thermal and electrochemical processes. We adopt a mixture model formulation for the two-phase flow, considering variable density (beyond Boussinesq), viscosity and hydrodynamic bubble dispersion. Introducing a new change of coordinates, inspired by the Lees–Dorodnitsyn transformation, we obtain a new self-similar solution for the laminar boundary layer equations. The results predict a wall gas fraction and gas plume thickness that increase with height to the power of 1/5 before asymptotically reaching unity and scaling with height to the power 2/5, respectively. The vertical velocity scales with height to the power of 3/5. Our analysis shows that self-similarity is only possible if gas conservation is entirely formulated in terms of the gas specific volume instead of the gas fraction.

The feedback between particle-size segregation and rheology in bidisperse granular flows is studied using the Stokes’ problem configuration. A method of lines scheme is implemented to solve the coupled momentum and segregation equations for a normally graded particle size distributed bulk at constant solids volume fraction. The velocity profiles develop quickly into a transient state, decoupled from segregation yet determined by the particle size. From this transient state, the velocity profile changes due to the particles’ relative movement, which redistributes the frictional response, hence its rheology. Additionally, the particles’ relative friction is modified via a frictional coefficient ratio, by analogy with the particles’ size ratio. While positive values of this coefficient exacerbate the nonlinearity of the velocity profiles induced by size differences, negative values dampen this behaviour. The numerical solutions reproduce well the analytical solutions for the velocity profile, which can be obtained from the steady-state conditions of the momentum and segregation equations for the transient and steady states, respectively. Segregation–momentum balances and four characteristic time scales can be established to propose two non-dimensional quantities, including specific Schmidt and Péclet numbers that describe broadly the segregation–rheology feedback. The proposed scheme, theoretical solutions and non-dimensional numbers offer a combined approach to understand segregation and flow dynamics within a granular bulk, extensible across many flow configurations.

We study the steady force acting on a rigid spherical particle immersed in an ideal gas and impinged by a standing acoustic wave. The acoustic wavelength and particle radius are assumed much larger and smaller, respectively, than the molecular mean-free path. To analyse the system, an asymptotic scheme is constructed, combining an inviscid continuum description in the far field with a free-molecular formulation for the near gas–surface interaction. The computation yields a closed-form expression for the steady acoustic force. The free-molecular solution is compared with a formerly derived result in the continuum regime (Doinkov, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A, vol. 447, 1994, pp. 447–466), and the latter is found characteristically larger by an order of magnitude at a given ratio between the particle radius and the acoustic wavelength. Markedly, the size of the acoustic force at ballistic flow conditions may become up to four orders of magnitude larger than the typical gravitational force, suggesting the feasibility of nano-particle acoustic levitation.

This study investigates the scenario of flow past a circular cylinder in proximity to a moving wall (or equally a body translating in still fluid parallel to a stationary wall). Fifty high-fidelity three-dimensional direct numerical simulations are performed over a parameter space of turbulent Reynolds numbers (Re) of 300 to 1000 combined with gap-to-diameter ratios (G/D) of 0.2 to 3. The flow, hydrodynamic and turbulence characteristics over the (Re, G/D) parameter space are examined in detail. Small-scale rib-like mode B structures and alternate vortex shedding are observed for all cases. The streamwise location for the vortex shedding (quantified by the wake recirculation length Lr) varies strongly with both Re and G/D. The variation of Lr with Re and G/D can be explained by the spanwise circulation $\varGamma_z$ fed into the wake, where the variation trends of Lr and $\varGamma_z$ are inversely correlated. The variations of the mean drag and fluctuating lift coefficients are also governed by the variations in Lr and $\varGamma_z$. The total kinetic energy in the wake region reduces drastically as G/D reduces below 0.8, which is contributed collectively by (i) reduction in the strength of the shed vortices, (ii) downstream movement of the location of vortex shedding and (iii) associated delayed generation of streamwise vortices. The present results on a moving wall also help to explain several flow and hydrodynamic characteristics reported in the literature for a stationary wall, because the moving wall eliminates the complex wall boundary layer and retains a ‘clean’ near-wall effect.

The entrainment of ambient fluid into a variable-density jet is typically quantified using an entrainment coefficient $\alpha$. Here, we investigate the dependence of $\alpha$ on the ratio of the jet's density $\rho _m$ and that of the ambient fluid $\rho _0$. Current parametrisations of $\alpha$ rely on a scaling inferred from early laboratory experiments (Ricou & Spalding, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 11, 1961, pp. 21–32). We demonstrate analytically that the experiments preclude definitive conclusions regarding the dependence of $\alpha$ on $\rho _m / \rho _0$ and that the underlying physical processes therefore warrant closer attention. To investigate the physics behind the dependence of entrainment on the density ratio we use a Favre-averaged entrainment decomposition. The decomposition is applied to data from large-eddy simulations of jets characterised by density ratios $\rho _m / \rho _0$ spanning over two orders of magnitude that have been verified against experimental data. Changes in the shape of the velocity profile are a significant contributor to entrainment in the near field due to the breakdown of the potential core, and persist over larger streamwise distances in heavy releases than in light releases. Therefore, to focus exclusively on the effects of density ratio, we study the region where the shape changes have become small but the density ratio is still significant. We show that the dimensionless turbulent kinetic energy production and mean kinetic energy flux depend strongly on the density ratio, both for our large-eddy simulation data and for recent experiments. Despite this, the entrainment coefficient is practically constant in this region and has value $\alpha \approx 0.07$ for all simulations.

Water particle orbits are key elements in the Lagrange wave formulation. The stochastic Miche implementation of the Lagrange model is a linear Gaussian two-dimensional or three-dimensional space–time model which exhibits typical nonlinear wave characteristics when transformed to Eulerian coordinates. This paper investigates the statistical relation between the degree of front–back asymmetry of individual waves and the orbit orientation for the particle located at the wave maximum at the point of observation. It is shown that, in the Lagrangian model with statistical front–back symmetry, for individual waves there is a clear connexion between the degree of individual wave asymmetry and the orientation of the randomly deformed elliptic orbit: a steep front correlates with upward tilt, a steep back is correlated with a downward tilt. This holds both for waves observed in time and in space, and the dependence is stronger for large amplitude waves than for smaller ones. The dependence is strongly dependent on the depth and on the significant steepness and spectral width. Inclusion of the average Stokes drift has a moderate effect on the dependence. For models with forced front–back asymmetry there is both a systematic dependence and a statistical correlation between asymmetry and tilt; for large amplitude waves the systematic relation dominates. The conclusions are based on Fourier simulations of Gauss–Lagrange waves of first and second order with a wind–sea Pierson–Moskowitz spectrum and a narrow swell JONSWAP spectrum.

This study reveals the competitive evolutionary process of the main driving factors in the early, middle and late stages of sandstorms, as shear turbulence becomes dominant and is then suppressed by enhanced thermal stability, based on quadrant analysis of the sand-laden turbulent wind field acquired from field observations over the entire sandstorm process. Moreover, the self-organized state of multiscale structures in the energy-containing region of the sand-laden turbulence is found to change significantly as the sandstorm develops. The logarithmic scaling law that governs the cumulative turbulent kinetic energy for the non-stationary flow in the early and late stages of the sandstorm is different from the existing theoretical formula. The corresponding rate of increase in the cumulative kinetic energy with increasing scale is much higher in these stages than in the middle stage of the sandstorm with steady flow. The change in self-organized state of turbulence is responsible for the flow acceleration and the thermal superimposed effect, rather than the addition of sand particles.

We study the behaviour of the streamwise velocity variance in turbulent wall-bounded flows using a direct numerical simulation (DNS) database of pipe flow up to friction Reynolds number ${{Re}}_{\tau } \approx 12000$. The analysis of the spanwise spectra in the viscous near-wall region strongly hints to the presence of an overlap layer between the inner- and the outer-scaled spectral ranges, featuring a $k_{\theta }^{-1+\alpha }$ decay (with $k_{\theta }$ the wavenumber in the azimuthal direction, and $\alpha \approx 0.18$), hence shallower than suggested by the classical formulation of the attached-eddy model. The key implication is that the contribution to the streamwise velocity variance $(\langle{u}^2\rangle)$ from the largest scales of motion (superstructures) slowly declines as ${{Re}}_{\tau }^{-\alpha }$, and the integrated inner-scaled variance follows a defect power law of the type $\langle u^2 \rangle ^+ = A - B \, {{Re}}_{\tau }^{-\alpha }$, with constants $A$ and $B$ depending on $y^+$. The DNS data very well support this behaviour, which implies that strict wall scaling is restored in the infinite-Reynolds-number limit. The extrapolated limit distribution of the streamwise velocity variance features a buffer-layer peak value of $\langle u^2 \rangle ^+ \approx 12.1$, and an additional outer peak with larger magnitude. The analysis of the velocity spectra also suggests a similar behaviour of the dissipation rate of the streamwise velocity variance at the wall, which is expected to attain a limiting value of approximately $0.28$, hence slightly exceeding the value $0.25$ which was assumed in previous analyses (Chen & Sreenivasan, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 908, 2021, R3). We have found evidence suggesting that the reduced near-wall influence of wall-attached eddies is likely linked to the formation of underlying turbulent Stokes layers.

The fundamental resonance (FR) in the nonlinear phase of the boundary-layer transition to turbulence appears when a dominant planar instability mode reaches a finite amplitude and the low-amplitude oblique travelling modes with the same frequency as the dominant mode, together with the stationary streak modes, undergo the strongest amplification among all the Fourier components. This regime may be the most efficient means to trigger the natural transition in hypersonic boundary layers. In this paper, we aim to reveal the intrinsic mechanism of the FR in the weakly nonlinear framework based on the large-Reynolds-number asymptotic technique. It is found that the FR is, in principle, a triad resonance among a dominant planar fundamental mode, a streak mode and an oblique mode. In the major part of the boundary layer, the nonlinear interaction of the fundamental mode and the streak mode seeds the growth of the oblique mode, whereas the interaction of the oblique mode and the fundamental mode drives the roll components (transverse and lateral velocity) of the streak mode, which leads to a stronger amplification of the streamwise component of the streak mode due to the lift-up mechanism. This asymptotic analysis clearly shows that the dimensionless growth rates of the streak and oblique modes are the same order of magnitude as the dimensionless amplitude of the fundamental mode $(\bar {\epsilon }_{10})$, and the amplitude of the streak mode is $O(\bar {\epsilon }_{10}^{-1})$ greater than that of the oblique mode. The main-layer solution of the streamwise velocity, spanwise velocity and temperature of both the streak and the oblique modes become singular as the wall is approached, and so a viscous wall layer appears underneath. The wall layer produces an outflux velocity to the main-layer solution, inclusion of which leads to an improved asymptotic theory whose accuracy is confirmed by comparing with the calculations of the nonlinear parabolised stability equations (NPSEs) at moderate Reynolds numbers and the secondary instability analysis (SIA) at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers.

Over the last decade, substantial progress has been made in understanding the topology of quasi-two-dimensional (2-D) non-equilibrium fluid flows driven by ATP-powered microtubules and microorganisms. By contrast, the topology of three-dimensional (3-D) active fluid flows still poses interesting open questions. Here, we study the topology of a spherically confined active flow using 3-D direct numerical simulations of generalized Navier–Stokes (GNS) equations at the scale of typical microfluidic experiments. Consistent with earlier results for unbounded periodic domains, our simulations confirm the formation of Beltrami-like bulk flows with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in this model. Furthermore, by leveraging fast methods to compute linking numbers, we explicitly connect this chiral symmetry breaking to the entanglement statistics of vortex lines. We observe that the mean of linking number distribution converges to the global helicity, consistent with the asymptotic result by Arnold [In Vladimir I. Arnold – Collected Works (ed. A.B. Givental, B.A. Khesin, A.N. Varchenko, V.A. Vassiliev & O.Y. Viro), pp. 357–375. Springer]. Additionally, we characterize the rate of convergence of this measure with respect to the number and length of observed vortex lines, and examine higher moments of the distribution. We find that the full distribution is well described by a k-Gamma distribution, in agreement with an entropic argument. Beyond active suspensions, the tools for the topological characterization of 3-D vector fields developed here are applicable to any solenoidal field whose curl is tangent to or cancels at the boundaries of a simply connected domain.

Settling velocity statistics for dilute, non-Brownian homogeneous suspensions of polydisperse spheres having a log-normal size distribution are generated from Stokesian dynamics simulations, as a function of the total volume fraction $\phi$ and normalised width $\alpha$ of the particle size distribution. Several hundred instantaneous configurations are averaged to obtain reliable statistics. The paper reports data for the average and fluctuating settling velocity of each particle class in a suspension that is widely polydisperse – previous work was limited to only two or three classes, and the average settling velocity of each particle class was in most cases not reported – and provides an assessment of the accuracy of the analytical models proposed by Batchelor, Richardson & Zaki, Davis & Gecol and Masliyah–Lockett–Bassoon in predicting the simulation data. A limited comparison with dynamic simulations in which the particle microstructure is allowed to evolve in time is also included.

The interaction of opposite-signed twist waves on vortex tubes can lead to vortex bursting, a process where the core expands into a double ring-like structure with strong swirling flows. Previous works have studied vortex bursting on rectilinear vortices by axially perturbing the initial core size to generate the twist waves, and observed largely axisymmetric bursting dynamics. In this work, we numerically study bursting on vortical structures with curved centrelines, analysing the interaction between the centreline dynamics, twist wave generation and propagation, and vortex bursting. We focus on axially perturbed helical vortex tubes with small radius-to-pitch ratios up to $0.0625$, as well as vortex rings with a large radius-to-core size ratio $10$, both at a circulation-based Reynolds number $5000$. The results show that though the initial twist wave propagation speeds are relatively unaffected by the curvature and torsion of the centreline, the bursting process is altered significantly compared with rectilinear vortices. The self-induced rotation of the centreline of the helical tube induces a non-axisymmetric distortion of the bursting structure, which rapidly breaks up the vortex core into small-scale helical structures. A similar destabilization of the bursting structure also occurs on vortex rings. The enstrophy increase and accelerated energy decay associated with bursting are predominantly determined by the twist wave strength, rather than the curvature and torsion of the centreline. Combined, our findings imply that bursting could play an important role in transferring and dissipating energy of vortical structures in wakes, and turbulent flows in general.

We present direct numerical simulations of developing turbulent channel flows subjected to thermal expansion or contraction downstream of a heated or cooled wall. Using different constitutive relations for viscosity we analyse the response of variable property flows to streamwise acceleration/deceleration by separating the effect of streamwise acceleration/deceleration from the effect of wall-normal property variations. We demonstrate that, beyond a certain streamwise location, the flow can be considered in a state of ‘quasi-equilibrium’ regarding semilocally scaled variables. As such, we claim that the development of turbulent quantities due to streamwise acceleration/deceleration is localized to the region of impulsive heating/cooling, while changes in turbulence occurring farther downstream can be attributed solely to property variations. This finding allows us to study turbulence modulation in accelerating/decelerating flows using the semilocal scaling framework. By investigating the energy redistribution among the turbulent velocity fluctuations, we conclude that a change in bulk streamwise velocity has a non-local effect which originates from the change in mean shear and modifies the energy pathways through velocity-pressure-gradient correlations. On the other hand, the wall-normal property gradients have a local effect and act through the modification of the viscous dissipation. We show that it is possible to superimpose and compare the two different effects when using the semilocal scaling framework.

We investigate the retraction of a circular thin film coated with insoluble surfactants, which is punctured at its centre. We assume that the surface pressure of the liquid–gas interface is related to the number density of surfactants through a linear equation of state, which is characterized by a single parameter: the Gibbs dilation modulus. To solve the governing equations and track the deformation of the domain, we use the finite element method with an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian approach where the film surface is sharp. Our simulations show that the surface elasticity introduced by the surfactants slows down the retraction and introduces oscillations at early times. In agreement with previous experiments and theoretical analysis, we find that the presence of surfactants introduces perturbations of the film thickness over progressively larger distances as the surface elasticity increases. The surface perturbations travel faster than the retracting edge of the film at a speed proportional to the Gibbs modulus. For large values of the Gibbs modulus, the interface behaviour approaches that of an incompressible two-dimensional solid. Our analysis sheds light on the effect of insoluble surfactants on the opening of a circular hole in a thin film and can be extended to investigate the onset of surface cracks and fractures.

We propose a semi-analytical solution for the advection–diffusion equation in cylindrical domains, with an aim towards extracting blood flow rates from contrast variations in a coronary computed tomography angiography image. The solution proposed in this work, in contrast with existing methods, which only consider advection, incorporates both radial velocity variation and diffusion. By means of a Galerkin approach using Bessel functions, a solution for a three-dimensional concentration field at a single time point is obtained after a Laplace transformation. This semi-analytical solution forms the basis for a novel advection–diffusion flow estimation (ADFE) method. The ADFE is derived, validated through numerical spectral-element method computations, and shown to exhibit improved accuracy against the state-of-the-art method for image-based blood flow extraction.

The incompressible motion of viscoplastic fluid between two semi-infinite rigid plates, hinged at their ends and rotating towards one another at constant angular velocity, generates self-similar flow fields because there is no externally imposed length scale in the absence of inertia. The magnitude of the strain rate scales with the angular velocity of the plates and the dimensionless deviatoric stresses are functions only of the polar angle and a dimensionless measure of the yield stress; they are independent of the radial distance from the corner. These flows feature unyielded regions adjacent to the boundaries for sufficiently large angles between the plates. Moreover, when the dimensionless yield stress is large, there are viscoplastic boundary layers that are attached to the boundary or the plug, the asymptotic structures of which are constructed.

We investigate the effect of helicity on the scale-similar structures of homogeneous isotropic and non-mirror-symmetric turbulence based on the Lagrangian renormalised approximation (LRA), which is a self-consistent closure theory proposed by Kaneda (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 107, 1981, pp. 131–145). In this study, we focus on the time scale representing the scale-similar range. For the LRA, the Lagrangian two-time velocity correlation and response function determine the representative time scale. The LRA predicts that both the Lagrangian two-time velocity correlation and response function equation do not explicitly depend on helicity. We assume the extended scale-similar spectra and time scale by considering the helicity dissipation rate. Considering the small-scale structures, the requirements for the energy and helicity fluxes and response function equation to be scale similar, yield the conventional inertial-range power laws and provide the energy and helicity spectra $\propto k^{-5/3}$ and the time scale $\propto \varepsilon ^{-1/3} k^{-2/3}$, where $\varepsilon$ and $k$ denote the energy dissipation rate and wavenumber, respectively. Notably, energy flux can be scale similar only when $k^H /k \ll 1$, where $k^H = \varepsilon ^H/\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon ^H$ denotes the helicity dissipation rate. This condition makes the energy cascade process in the scale-similar range completely independent of helicity. We also investigate the localness of the interscale interaction in the energy and helicity cascades for the LRA. We demonstrate that the helicity cascade is slightly non-local in scales compared with the energy cascade. This study provides a foundation on the modelling of non-mirror-symmetric turbulent flows.
