An efficient numerical method for calculation of the sea surface skewness and kurtosis for arbitrary wave spectra, taking up to third-order nonlinear effects into account, is developed. The skewness and kurtosis are calculated for a large number of sea states, covering a wide range of sea-state parameters in terms of wave steepness, water depth, directional spreading and frequency bandwidth. The results are used to propose new accurate expressions for skewness and kurtosis, valid over a wide range of sea states. Existing expressions for skewness and kurtosis reported in the literature are reviewed, and their accuracy is evaluated. Comparison to model-test results and phase-resolved numerical simulation are presented. It is suggested that the new improved parametrizations for skewness and kurtosis, which include dependence on wave steepness, water depth, spectral bandwidth and directional spreading, represent a convenient way to include these covariates into higher-order distributions for crest heights, wave heights and surface elevation.

Large eddy simulation of flow past a cricket ball with its seam at $30^\circ$ to the free stream is carried out for $5 \times 10^4 \le Re \le 4.5 \times 10^5$. Three regimes of flow are identified on the basis of the time-averaged swing force coefficient ($\bar {C}_Z$) – no swing (NS), conventional swing (CS, $\bar {C}_Z>0$) and reverse swing (RS, $\bar {C}_Z<0$). The effect of seam on the boundary layer is investigated. Contrary to the popular belief, the boundary layer does not transition to a turbulent state in the initial stages of CS. The seam energizes the laminar boundary layer and delays its separation. The delay is significantly larger in a region near the poles, whose extent increases with an increase in $Re$ causing $\bar {C}_Z$ to increase. Here $\bar {C}_Z$ assumes a near constant value in the later stage of CS. The boundary layer transitions to a turbulent state via formation of a laminar separation bubble (LSB) in the equatorial region and directly, without a LSB, in the polar region. The extent of the LSB shrinks while the region of direct transition near the poles increases with an increase in $Re$. A LSB forms on the non-seam side of the ball in the RS regime. A secondary vortex is observed in the wake bubble. While it exists on the non-seam side for the entire range of $Re$ considered, the mixing in the flow introduced by the seam causes it to disappear beyond a certain $Re$ on the seam side. The pressure difference between the seam and non-seam sides sets up wing-tip-like vortices. Their polarity reverses with the switch from the CS to RS regime.

The velocity gradient tensor can be decomposed into normal straining, pure shearing and rigid rotation tensors, each with distinct symmetry and normality properties. We partition the strength of turbulent velocity gradients based on the relative contributions of these constituents in several canonical flows. These flows include forced isotropic turbulence, turbulent channels and turbulent boundary layers. For forced isotropic turbulence, the partitioning is in excellent agreement with previous results. For wall-bounded turbulence, the partitioning collapses onto the isotropic partitioning far from the wall, where the mean shearing is relatively weak. By contrast, the near-wall partitioning is dominated by shearing. Between these two regimes, the partitioning collapses well at sufficiently high friction Reynolds numbers and its variations in the buffer layer and the log-law region can be reasonably modelled as a function of the mean shearing strength. Altogether, our results highlight the expressivity and broad applicability of the velocity gradient partitioning as advantages for turbulence modelling.

The propagation of the gravity current generated from a moving source of buoyancy is of interest in deep-sea mining and related technologies. The study by Ouillon et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 924, 2021, A43) elucidated some salient patterns of the flow concerning a source close to the bottom on the basis of direct numerical simulation on a supercomputer. Here, we present a simple box model that provides further insights and useful analytical approximations for this gravity-current flow system. We show that this flow is very different from that produced by a moving source at the top, studied by Hogg et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 539, 2005, pp. 349–385). The model confirms that the main governing parameter is the ratio $a$ of speed of source to that of buoyancy propagation. The model points out dependency also on the front-jump Froude number (which implies dependency on the height of the ambient fluid). For a sufficiently large $a >a_{crit}$, a supercritical regime appears in which the gravity current forms a wedge behind the moving source; in the subcritical regime, the upstream propagation attains a maximum $x_m$ at time $t_m$. The model predicts the value $a_{crit}$, the distance and time $x_m$ and $t_m$ in the subcritical case, and the shape of the wedge in the supercritical case, without any adjustable constant. Comparisons with the numerical data show fair agreement.

The swinging motion of the eigenmodes of a free inviscid drop has been known for nearly a century. Yet, as the drop sits on a solid substrate, getting flattened by gravity, analytical solutions waver due to the non-spherical base state and the dynamics of the three-phase contact line. The recent paper by Zhang et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 962, 2023, A10) investigated the effect of gravity on the harmonic modes of sessile droplets for free and pinned contact line conditions. An effective boundary element method has been used to solve both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes for a variety of Bond numbers and static contact angles, also revising on the way a debated capillary instability.

The pseudo-incompressible approximation, which assumes small pressure perturbations from a one-dimensional reference state, has long been used to model large-scale dynamics in stellar and planetary atmospheres. However, existing implementations do not conserve energy when the reference state is time-dependent. We use a variational formulation to derive an energy-conserving pseudo-incompressible model in which the reference state evolves while remaining hydrostatic. We present an algorithm for solving these equations in the case of closed boundaries, for which the pseudo-incompressible velocity constraint is degenerate. We implement the model within the low-Mach-number code MAESTROeX, and validate it against a fully compressible model in several test cases, finding that our hybrid pseudo-incompressible–hydrostatic model generally shows better agreement with the compressible results than the existing MAESTROeX implementation.

Biological microorganisms and artificial micro-swimmers often locomote in heterogeneous viscous environments consisting of networks of obstacles embedded into viscous fluid media. In this work, we use the squirmer model and present a numerical investigation of the effects of shape on swimming in a heterogeneous medium. Specifically, we analyse the microorganism's propulsion speed as well as its energetic cost and swimming efficiency. The analysis allows us to probe the general characteristics of swimming in a heterogeneous viscous environment in comparison with the case of a purely viscous fluid. We found that a spheroidal microorganism always propels faster, expends less energy and is more efficient than a spherical microorganism in either a homogeneous fluid or a heterogeneous medium. Moreover, we determined that above a critical eccentricity, a spheroidal microorganism in a heterogeneous medium can swim faster than a spherical microorganism in a homogeneous fluid. Based on an analysis of the forces acting on the squirmer, we offer an explanation for the decrease in the squirmer's speed observed in heterogeneous media compared with homogeneous fluids.

We introduce a new model equation for Stokes gravity waves based on conformal transformations of Euler's equations. The local version of the model equation is relevant for the dynamics of shallow water waves. It allows us to characterize the travelling periodic waves both in the case of smooth and peaked waves and to solve the existence problem exactly, albeit not in elementary functions. Spectral stability of smooth waves with respect to co-periodic perturbations is proven analytically based on the exact count of eigenvalues in a constrained spectral problem.

A gas bubble sitting at a liquid–gas interface can burst following the rupture of the thin liquid film separating it from the ambient, owing to the large surface energy of the resultant cavity. This bursting bubble forms capillary waves, a Worthington jet and subsequent droplets for a Newtonian liquid medium. However, rheological properties of the liquid medium like elastoviscoplasticity can greatly affect these dynamics. Using direct numerical simulations, this study exemplifies how the complex interplay between elasticity (in terms of elastic stress relaxation) and yield stress influences the transient interfacial phenomenon of bursting bubbles. We investigate how bursting dynamics depends on capillary, elastic and yield stresses by exploring the parameter space of the Deborah number ${{\textit {De}}}$ (dimensionless relaxation time of elastic stresses) and the plastocapillary number $\mathcal {J}$ (dimensionless yield-stress of the medium), delineating four distinct characteristic behaviours. Overall, we observe a non-monotonic effect of elastic stress relaxation on the jet development while plasticity of the elastoviscoplastic (EVP) medium is shown to affect primarily the jet evolution only at faster relaxation times (low ${{\textit {De}}}$). The role of elastic stresses on jet development is elucidated with the support of energy budgets identifying different modes of energy transfer within the EVP medium. The effects of elasticity on the initial progression of capillary waves and droplet formation are also studied. In passing, we study the effects of solvent–polymer viscosity ratio on bursting dynamics and show that polymer viscosity can increase the jet thickness apart from reducing the maximum height of the jet.

We present a systematic simulation campaign to investigate the pairwise interaction of two mobile, monodisperse particles submerged in a viscous fluid and subjected to monochromatic oscillating flows. To this end, we employ the immersed boundary method to geometrically resolve the flow around the two particles in a non-inertial reference frame. We neglect gravity to focus on fluid–particle interactions associated with particle inertia and consider particles of three different density ratios aligned along the axis of oscillation. We systematically vary the initial particle distance and the frequency based on which the particles show either attractive or repulsive behaviour by approaching or moving away from each other, respectively. This behaviour is consistently confirmed for the three density ratios investigated, although particle inertia dictates the overall magnitude of the particle dynamics. Based on this, threshold conditions for the transition from attraction to repulsion are introduced that obey the same power law for all density ratios investigated. We furthermore analyse the flow patterns by suitable averaging and decomposition of the flow fields and find competing effects of the vorticity induced by the fluid–particle interactions. Based on these flow patterns, we derive a circulation-based criterion that provides a quantitative measure to categorize the different cases. It is shown that such a criterion provides a consistent measure to distinguish the attractive and repulsive arrangements.

Recently, subcritical transition to turbulence in the quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2-D) shear flow with strong linear friction (Camobreco et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 963, 2023, R2) has been demonstrated by the 2-D mechanism at $Re = 71\,211$, and the nonlinear Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) waves related to the edge state were approached independently of initial optimal disturbances. For 2-D plane Poiseuille flow, transition to the fully developed turbulence requires that the Reynolds number is several times larger than the critical Reynolds number $Re_c$ (Markeviciute & Kerswell, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 917, 2021, A57). In this paper, we observed the subcritical transitional flow in 2-D plane Poiseuille flow driven by the nonlinear TS waves by both linear and nonlinear optimal disturbances ($Re < Re_c$) with different quantitative edge states. The nonlinear optimal disturbances could trigger the sustained subcritical transitional flow for $Re \geqslant 2400$. The initial energy for nonlinear optimal disturbance is more efficient than the linear optimal disturbance in reaching the subcritical transitional flow for $2400 \leqslant Re \leqslant 5000$. Moreover, the initial energy of linear optimal disturbance is larger than the energy of its edge state. The nonlinear TS waves along the edge state are formed by the nonlinear optimal disturbances to trigger transitional flow, which agrees well with the main conclusions of Camobreco et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 963, 2023, R2), while the required $Re$ of 2-D plane Poiseuille flow is much smaller.

Eukaryotic swimming cells such as spermatozoa, algae or protozoa use flagella or cilia to move in viscous fluids. The motion of their flexible appendages in the surrounding fluid induces propulsive forces that balance viscous drag on the cells and lead to a directed swimming motion. Here, we use our recently built database of cell motility (BOSO-Micro) to investigate the extent to which the shapes of eukaryotic swimming cells may be optimal from a hydrodynamic standpoint. We first examine the morphology of flexible flagella undergoing waving deformation and show that their amplitude-to-wavelength ratio is near that predicted theoretically to optimise the propulsive efficiency of active filaments. Next, we consider ciliates, for which locomotion is induced by the collective beating of short cilia covering their surface. We show that the aspect ratios of ciliates are close to that predicted to minimise the viscous drag of the cell body. Both results strongly suggest a key role played by hydrodynamic constraints, in particular viscous drag, in shaping eukaryotic swimming cells.

We derive reduced models for extrusion problems where it is necessary to account for fluid compressibility. We consider the two-dimensional extensional flow of a compressible viscous fluid and discuss two specific applications: weakly compressible fluids and bubbly liquid–gas mixtures that behave as a single compressible fluid. The mathematical model we present consists of equations for conservation of mass, conservation of momentum and a closure relationship between the pressure and density. The most substantial differences between compressible extrusion problems is in the closure relationship. By integrating the conservation equations across the fluid cross-section and exploiting a slender aspect ratio, we derive reduced equations for conservation of mass and conservation of momentum in the direction of flow. The reduced system of equations relating cross-sectionally averaged quantities is closed by a relationship between the averaged pressure and density, which will differ substantially depending on the application. We demonstrate the utility of a reduced model for both the weakly compressible fluid and bubbly mixture applications; namely, in providing valuable quantitative insights without needing to solve a complicated free-boundary problem.

Surface roughness significantly modifies the liquid film thickness entrained when dip coating a solid surface, particularly at low coating velocity. Using a homogenization approach, we present a predictive model for determining the liquid film thickness coated on a rough plate. A homogenized boundary condition at an equivalent flat surface is used to model the rough boundary, accounting for both flow through the rough texture layer, through an interface permeability term, and slip at the equivalent surface. While the slip term accounts for tangential velocity induced by viscous shear stress, accurately predicting the film thickness requires the interface permeability term to account for additional tangential flow driven by pressure gradients along the interface. We find that a greater degree of slip and interface permeability signifies less viscous stress that would promote deposition, thus reducing the amount of free film coated above the textures. The model is found to be in good agreement with experimental measurements, and requires no fitting parameters. Furthermore, our model may be applied to arbitrary periodic roughness patterns, opening the door to flexible characterization of surfaces found in natural and industrial coating processes.

We studied the transport and deposition behaviour of point particles in Rayleigh–Bénard convection cells subjected to Couette-type wall shear. Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) are performed for Rayleigh number ($Ra$) in the range $10^{7} \leq Ra \leq ~10^9$ with a fixed Prandtl number $Pr = 0.71$, while the wall-shear Reynolds number ($Re_w$) is in the range $0 \leq Re_w \leq ~12\,000$. With the increase of $Re_w$, the large-scale rolls expanded horizontally, evolving into zonal flow in two-dimensional simulations or streamwise-oriented rolls in three-dimensional simulations. We observed that, for particles with a small Stokes number ($St$), they either circulated within the large-scale rolls when buoyancy dominated or drifted near the walls when shear dominated. For medium $St$ particles, pronounced spatial inhomogeneity and preferential concentration were observed regardless of the prevailing flow state. For large $St$ particles, the turbulent flow structure had a minor influence on the particles’ motion; although clustering still occurred, wall shear had a negligible influence compared with that for medium $St$ particles. We then presented the settling curves to quantify the particle deposition ratio on the walls. Our DNS results aligned well with previous theoretical predictions, which state that small $St$ particles settle with an exponential deposition ratio and large $St$ particles settle with a linear deposition ratio. For medium $St$ particles, where complex particle–turbulence interaction emerges, we developed a new model describing the settling process with an initial linear stage followed by a nonlinear stage. Unknown parameters in our model can be determined either by fitting the settling curves or using empirical relations. Compared with DNS results, our model also accurately predicts the average residence time across a wide range of $St$ for various $Re_w$.

We investigate the concentration fluctuations of passive scalar plumes emitted from small, localised (point-like) steady sources in a neutrally stratified turbulent boundary layer over a rough wall. The study utilises high-resolution large-eddy simulations for sources of varying sizes and heights. The numerical results, which show good agreement with wind-tunnel studies, are used to estimate statistical indicators of the concentration field, including spectra and moments up to the fourth order. These allow us to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the production, transport and dissipation of concentration fluctuations, with a focus on the very near field, where the skewness is found to have negative values – an aspect not previously highlighted. The gamma probability density function is confirmed to be a robust model for the one-point concentration at sufficiently large distances from the source. However, for ground-level releases in a well-defined area around the plume centreline, the Gaussian distribution is found to be a better statistical model. As recently demonstrated by laboratory results, for elevated releases, the peak and shape of the pre-multiplied scalar spectra are confirmed to be independent of the crosswind location for a given downwind distance. Using a stochastic model and theoretical arguments, we demonstrate that this is due to the concentration spectra being directly shaped by the transverse and vertical velocity components governing the meandering of the plume. Finally, we investigate the intermittency factor, i.e. the probability of non-zero concentration, and analyse its variability depending on the thresholds adopted for its definition.

We experimentally explored the effect of single-sidewall cooling on Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) convection. Canonical RB was also studied to aid insight. The scenarios shared tank dimensions and bottom and top wall temperatures; the single sidewall cooling had the top wall temperature. Turbulence was explored at two canonical Rayleigh numbers, $Ra=1.6\times 10^{10}$ and $Ra=2\times 10^9$ under Prandtl number $Pr=5.4$. Particle image velocimetry described vertical planes parallel and perpendicular to the sidewall cooling. The two $Ra$ scenarios reveal pronounced changes in the flow structure and large-scale circulation (LSC) due to the sidewall cooling. The density gradient induced by the sidewall cooling led to asymmetric descending and ascending flows and irregular LSC. Flow statistics departed from the canonical case, exhibiting lower buoyancy effects, represented by an effective Rayleigh number with effective height dependent on the distance from the lateral cooling. Velocity spectra show two scalings, $\varPhi \propto f^{-5/3}$ Kolmogorov (KO41) and $\varPhi \propto f^{-11/5}$ Bolgiano (BO59) in the larger $Ra$; the latter was not present in the smaller set-up. The BO59 scaling with sidewall cooling appears at higher frequencies than its canonical counterpart, suggesting weaker buoyancy effects. The LSC core motions allowed us to identify a characteristic time scale of the order of vortex turnover time associated with distinct vortex modes. The velocity spectra of the vortex core oscillation along its principal axis showed a scaling of $\varPhi _c \propto f^{-5/3}$ for the single sidewall cooling, which was dominant closer there. It did not occur in the canonical case, evidencing the modulation of LSC oscillation on the flow.

The preference for particles to accumulate at specific regions in the near-wall part is a widely observed phenomenon in wall-bounded turbulence. Unlike small particles more frequently found in low-speed streaks, finite-size particles can accumulate in either low-speed or high-speed streaks. However, mechanisms and influencing factors leading to the different preferential concentration locations still need to be clarified. The present study conducts particle-resolved direct numerical simulations of particle-laden turbulent channel flows to provide a better understanding of this seemingly puzzling behaviour of preferential accumulation. These simulations cover different particle-to-fluid density ratios, particle volume fractions, particle sizes and degrees of sedimentation intensity. We find that the large particle size is the crucial factor that results in particles accumulating in high-speed streaks. Large particles not only are difficult to be conveyed by the quasi-streamwise vortices to low-speed streaks but also can escape from the near-wall region before moving spanwisely out from high-speed streaks. The sedimentation effect allows particles to gather closer to the channel wall and stay longer in the near-wall regions, reinforcing the sweeping mechanism of quasi-streamwise vortices that transport particles from high- to low-speed streaks. As a result, sedimenting particles tend to accumulate in the low-speed streaks.

Flow between axially rotating concentric cylinders is well known to exhibit rich dynamics. Hence, Taylor instabilities have been studied, both experimentally and theoretically, for many years. Although usually studied in the abstract, such geometries arise in a range of practical situations including drilling, when a drilling fluid flow enters a well via a pipe that is the centre body and returns via the annulus between the pipe and the borehole wall. In drilling, the centre body rotates and the annular flow contains rock cuttings. Here, we report the development of an Eulerian-Eulerian solver, based on OpenFOAM, that solves for this cuttings transport problem in the presence of both gravity and Taylor vortices. To check the reliability of the solver, we conduct a set of experiments spanning a wide range of complex flow regimes. We show that the model successfully predicts, in all regimes, the observed complex redistribution of particulates. However, for suspension flows under viscously dominated conditions, high particle concentrations and in rectilinear flow, particle pressure and normal stress differences are sufficient to capture particle migration. Results show that in more complex flows exemplified by the Taylor–Couette flow studied here, more realistic predictions of non-Brownian particle migration require inclusion of forces arising through the relative velocity of the two phases including lift forces originating both from inertia and particle rotation.

Capillary folding is the process of folding planar objects into three-dimensional (3-D) structures using capillary force. It has many important industrial applications, e.g. the fabrication of microelectromechanical systems. In this work, we propose a 3-D model for the capillary folding of thin elastic sheets with pinned contact lines. The energy of the system consists of interfacial energies between the different phases and the elastic energy of the sheet. The latter is described by the nonlinear Koiter's model, which can accommodate large deformations of the sheet. From the energy, we derive the governing equations for the static system using a variational approach. We then develop a numerical method to find equilibrium solutions via a relaxation dynamics. At each time step, we evolve the sheet by using the subdivision element method, and update the droplet surface by minimizing a squared area functional using linear finite elements. Qualitatively, numerical solutions for the equilibrium configurations of the sheet–droplet system agree well with those observed in experiments. Furthermore, we identify the critical bendabilities and present bifurcation diagrams for the folding of a triangular sheet. The results exhibit rich and fully 3-D behaviours that were not captured by previous two-dimensional models. Our results provide new insights into the nonlinear process of capillary folding, and may contribute to the advancement of microfabrication techniques.
