A yield stress is added to Taylor's (1952, Proc. Royal Soc. A, 211, 225-239) model of a microscopic organism with a wavy cylindrical tail swimming through a viscous fluid. Viscoplastic slender-body theory is employed for the task, generalising existing results for Bingham fluid to the Herschel–Bulkley constitutive model. Numerical solutions are provided over a range of the two key parameters of the problem: the wave amplitude relative to the wavelength, and a Bingham number which describes the strength of the yield stress. Numerical solutions are supplemented with discussions of various limits of the problem in which analytical progress is possible. If the wave amplitude is sufficiently small, the yield stress of the material inevitably dominates the flow; the resulting ‘plastic locomotion’ results in swimming speeds that depend strongly on the swimming gait, and can, in some cases, even be negative. Conversely, when the yield stress is large, swimming becomes possible at the wave speed, with the swimmer sliding or burrowing along its centreline with a relatively high efficiency.

The shape of a sessile drop on a horizontal substrate depends upon the Bond number $Bo$ and the contact angle $\alpha$. Inspired by puddle approximations at large $Bo$ (Quéré, Rep. Prog. Phys., vol. 68, 2005, p. 2495), we address here the limit of small contact angles at fixed drop volume and arbitrary $Bo$. It readily leads to a pancake shape approximation, where the drop height and radius scale as $\alpha$ and $\alpha ^{-1/2}$, respectively, with capillary forces being appreciable only near the edge. The pancake approximation breaks down for $Bo=\textrm {ord}(\alpha ^{2/3})$. In that distinguished limit, capillary and gravitational forces are comparable throughout, and the drop height and radius scale as $\alpha ^{2/3}$ and $\alpha ^{-1/3}$, respectively. For $Bo\ll \alpha ^{2/3}$ these scalings remain, with the drop shape turning into a spherical cap. The asymptotic results are compared with a numerical solution of the exact problem.

The fluid–structure interaction problem composed of an elongated, finite-length, flexible cylinder falling in a fluid at rest is investigated experimentally. Tomographic reconstruction of the cylinder and three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry of the surrounding fluid, based on the Shake-The-Box algorithm, are used jointly to capture both solid and fluid motions. Starting from the rectilinear vertical fall characterized by a steady wake, focus is placed on subsequent regimes involving, mainly in the horizontal direction, periodic rigid-body motions (RBM) of weak amplitude or periodic large-amplitude bending oscillations (BO). Two RBM regimes are explored: the TRA regime where the cylinder exhibits translational oscillations in a plane perpendicular to its axis, and the AZI regime in which the body displays an azimuthal oscillation around its centre. The associated unsteady wakes are composed of counter-rotating vortices bending near the body ends to connect with the adjacent vortex rows. Specific organizations of the vortical structures are uncovered, depending on the regime. In particular, in the AZI regime, they present an antisymmetrical distribution relative to the midspan point. For a sufficiently long cylinder, BO regimes emerge, resembling the structural modes of an unsupported beam. The associated wakes exhibit a cellular organization. Within each cell delimited by two deformation nodes, two counter-rotating vortex rows are shed per oscillation cycle. Flow velocity fluctuations are in phase opposition on each side of a deformation node. For both RBM and BO regimes, frequency and phase analyses of cylinder and wake behaviours, along the span, highlight the spatio-temporal synchronization of the unsteady flow and moving body.

Astrophysical flows are often subject to both rotation and large-scale background magnetic fields. Individually, each is known to two-dimensionalize the flow in the perpendicular plane. In realistic settings, both of these effects are simultaneously present and, importantly, need not be aligned. In this work, we numerically investigate three-dimensional forced magnetohydrodynamic turbulence subject to the competing effects of global rotation and a perpendicular background magnetic field. We focus on the case of a strong background field and find that increasing the rotation rate from zero produces significant changes in the structure of the turbulent flow. Starting with a two-dimensional inverse energy cascade at zero rotation, the flow first transitions to a forward cascade of kinetic energy, then to a shear-layer dominated regime and finally to a second shear-layer regime where the kinetic energy flux is strongly suppressed and the energy transfer is mediated by the induced magnetic field. We show that the first two transitions occur at distinct values of the Rossby number, and the third occurs at a distinct value of the Lehnert number. The three-dimensional results are confirmed using an asymptotic two-dimensional, three-component model, which allows us to extend our results to the planetary-relevant case of an arbitrary angle between the rotation vector and guide field. More generally, our results demonstrate that, when considering the simultaneous limits of strong rotation and a strong guide field, the order in which those limits are taken matters in the misaligned case.

The concept of statistical stability is central to Malkus's 1956 attempt to predict the mean profile in shear flow turbulence. Here we discuss how his original attempt to assess this – an Orr–Sommerfeld (OS) analysis on the mean profile – can be improved by considering a cumulant expansion of the Navier–Stokes equations. Focusing on the simplest non-trivial closure (commonly referred to as CE2) that corresponds to the quasilinearized Navier–Stokes equations, we develop an extended OS analysis that also incorporates information about the fluctuation field. A more practical version of this – minimally extended OS analysis – is identified and tested on a number of statistically steady and, therefore, statistically stable turbulent channel flows. Beyond the concept of statistical stability, this extended stability analysis should also improve the popular approach of mean flow linear analysis in time-dependent shear flows by including more information about the underlying flow in its predictions as well as for other flows with additional physics such as convection.

Constant-flux gravity currents of viscoplastic fluid remain axisymmetric when extruded onto a dry horizontal plane. However, if the plane is coated with a shallow layer of water, the current suffers a dramatic non-axisymmetric instability in which localized $v$-shaped cuts appear in the outer edge where the viscoplastic fluid is in contact with water. These ‘fractures’ lengthen and guide the subsequent radial outflow, leading to distinctive flower-like patterns. This pattern formation process is illustrated for two viscoplastic materials, an aqueous suspension of Carbopol, and a mixture of water and joint compound (a kaolin-based, commercially available product). The fracturing spreads over the entire upper surface of the current when deeper water baths are used, complicating the extrusion patterns. The instability can be removed entirely when the ambient water layer is replaced by an immiscible liquid of comparable viscosity, indicating that the presence of water at the surface is key to the pattern formation process. We conjecture that the underlying mechanism is the fracture under tension of the viscoplastic material, exacerbated by the ambient water.

Floating rather stably above the convective mantle, continents exert a thermal blanket effect on the mantle by locally accumulating heat and altering the flow structure, which in turn affect continent motion. This thermal-mechanic feedback has been captured by a simplified model―a thermally insulating plate floating freely over a bottom-heated convecting fluid. Previous studies have revealed that, as plate size increases, plate motion transitions from long-term stagnancy over cold downwelling to short-term stagnancy over hot upwelling, termed stagnant modes (SMs) I and II, respectively, and eventually to a unidirectionally moving mode (UMM) with no stagnancy. During SM I/II, the adjacent hot/cold plumes are observed to move toward/away from the plate. The present study quantifies these plume motions through analysis on a partially insulated loop model established for SM I and SM II, respectively. The model predictions are well verified by results of numerical simulation. Moreover, the dominant frequency of plate speed is shown to increase linearly with plate size, with an abrupt jump as the coupling mode transitions from SM I to SM II. This suggests that the enhanced thermal blanket effect with plate size enables an increasingly fast feedback between the slowdown of a plate and the strengthening of hot upwelling which boosts plate motion. When plate motion is boosted before it stops, the UMM emerges. The predicted critical plate size for the UMM is well validated by simulation results. Geological implications of the results for continent motion, continent–mantle coupling and particularly the migration of plume and subduction sites are discussed.

Unsteady side loads observed in supersonic nozzles operating in over-expanded regimes are most often associated with intrinsic unsteadiness of the shock system and separation line, featuring random motions with mainly broadband low-frequency contributions. A tonal flow behaviour, rather associated with energy peaks of fluctuating wall pressure in the middle frequency range, is also found to emerge for particular operating conditions in a truncated ideally contoured nozzle. The corresponding flow field is here investigated to understand its origin and show how it modifies side-load properties. The temporal and spatial organization of wall pressure and jet velocity field are first experimentally characterized based on synchronized acquisition of both wall pressure along rings of pressure probes located within the nozzle, and high-rate time-resolved particle image velocimetry velocity fields measured in a plane section crossing the jet downstream of the nozzle exit. The external jet aerodynamics and internal wall pressure field are first shown to be clearly linked, but only at this frequency peak for which a significant coherence emerges between first azimuthal mode of fluctuating wall pressure and first azimuthal mode of fluctuating external velocity field. A delayed detached eddy simulation is carried out and validated against experimental results in order to reproduce this tonal flow dynamics. The analysis of simulation data shows that the tonal flow behaviour of first azimuthal mode is indeed more globally felt within the whole flow structure where both upstream and downstream propagating waves are shown to coexist, even far downstream of the nozzle exit. The analysis shows that both waves possess support in the jet core and have a non-negligible pressure signature in the separated region. The spectral proper orthogonal decomposition of fluctuating pressure field at this tonal frequency reveals that the nature and intensity of lateral pressure forces is directed by the resonance related to the upstream- and downstream-propagating coherent structures, which imposes the shock waves network to respond and modulate the pressure levels on the nozzle internal surface.

The dynamics of fluid-conveying pipelines with different shapes has received extensive research attention. Significant wall shear stress and flow separation occur when the fluid flows through pipelines with various curvatures. These phenomena trigger pipeline vibration, the generation of mechanical and hydrodynamic noise, damage, and even the rupture of the pipeline. However, previous studies have not considered the mechanism of internal pipeline flow to eliminate flow separation and the generation of secondary flow inside bent pipelines by redirecting and manipulating the flow. To steer the fluid flow, a ‘hydrodynamic transformation strategy’ based on the metamaterial technology is proposed for the first time in this work; through this strategy, the fluid in pipelines can be made to flow along trajectories that are always parallel to the central axis of the bent pipelines. Interestingly, this innovative method can effectively eliminate the elbow-induced secondary flow and prevent the generation of a pressure gradient toward the pipeline wall. Using the soft lithography technology or the three-dimensional printing technology, the hydrodynamic metamaterial microstructure required to manipulate the fluid flow path in actual engineering applications can be achieved. Our work paves the way for developing new approaches for controlling the flow characteristics and reducing the turbulence intensity of the fluid flowing in pipelines with elbows and corners.

Stationary longitudinal vortical rolls emerge in katabatic and anabatic Prandtl slope flows at shallow slopes as a result of an instability when the imposed surface buoyancy flux relative to the background stratification is sufficiently large. Here, we identify the self-pairing of these longitudinal rolls as a unique flow structure. The topology of the counter-rotating vortex pair bears a striking resemblance to speaker-wires and their interaction with each other is a precursor to further destabilization and breakdown of the flow field into smaller structures. On its own, a speaker-wire vortex retains its unique topology without any vortex reconnection or breakup. For a fixed slope angle $\alpha =3^{\circ }$ and at a constant Prandtl number, we analyse the saturated state of speaker-wire vortices and perform a bi-global linear stability analysis based on their stationary state. We establish the existence of both fundamental and subharmonic secondary instabilities depending on the circulation and transverse wavelength of the base state of speaker-wire vortices. The dominance of subharmonic modes relative to the fundamental mode helps to explain the relative stability of a single vortex pair compared to the vortex dynamics in the presence of two or an even number of pairs. These instability modes are essential for the bending and merging of multiple speaker-wire vortices, which break up and lead to more dynamically unstable states, eventually paving the way for transition towards turbulence. This process is demonstrated via three-dimensional flow simulations with which we are able to track the nonlinear temporal evolution of these instabilities.

We consider steady, fully-developed flows of deformable, inelastic grains driven by gravity between identical bumpy walls. Using constitutive relations from extended kinetic theory (EKT) for the erodible bed near the centreline and the collisional flow between the surfaces of the bed and the walls, we calculate the fields of mean velocity, fluctuation velocity and solid volume fraction across the chute. We consider both situations in which the solid volume fraction at and near the centreline is high enough to form a bed and when it is not. We compare results predicted by EKT with recent discrete element simulations results, and obtain very good agreement.

The three-dimensional instability of the flow past a 5 : 1 rectangular cylinder is investigated via Floquet analysis and direct numerical simulations. A quasi-subharmonic (QS) unstable mode is detected, marking an important difference with the flow past bodies with lower aspect ratio and/or with smooth leading edge. The QS mode becomes unstable at Reynolds number (based on the cylinder thickness and free-stream velocity) $Re \approx 480$; its spanwise wavelength is approximately three times the cylinder thickness. The structural sensitivity locates the wavemaker region over the longitudinal sides of the cylinder, indicating that the instability is triggered by the mutual inviscid interaction of vortices generated by the leading edge shear layer.

Solute–surface interactions have garnered considerable interest in recent years as a novel control mechanism for driving unique fluid dynamics and particle transport with potential applications in fields such as biomedicine, the development of microfluidic devices and enhanced oil recovery. In this study, we will discuss dispersion induced by the diffusioosmotic motion near a charged wall in the presence of a solute concentration gradient. Here, we introduce a plug of salt with a Gaussian distribution at the centre of a channel with no background flow. As the solute diffuses, the concentration gradient drives a diffusioosmotic slip flow at the walls, which results in a recirculating flow in the channel; this, in turn, drives an advective flux of the solute concentration. This effect leads to cross-stream diffusion of the solute, altering the effective diffusivity of the solute as it diffuses along the channel. We derive theoretical predictions for the solute dynamics using a multiple-time-scale analysis to quantify the dispersion driven by the solute–surface interactions. Furthermore, we derive a cross-sectionally averaged concentration equation with an effective diffusivity analogous to that from Taylor dispersion. In addition, we use numerical simulations to validate our theoretical predictions.
