In this paper, the generalized burn-in and replacement model considered by Cha (2001) is further extended to the case in which the probability of Type II failure is time dependent. Two burn-in procedures are considered and they are compared in cases when both the procedures are applicable. Under some mild conditions on the failure rate function r(t) and the Type II failure probability function p(t), the problems of determining optimal burn-in time and optimal replacement policy are considered.

A continuous-time model of a multigrade system is developed, which includes Poisson arrivals, interaction between grades and a leaving process. It therefore constitutes a continuous-time analogue of Pollard's hierarchical population model with Poisson recruitment. An expression is found for the first and second moments of grade size at any time. A general formulation of the joint probability generating function of the numbers in each grade is given, and the limiting distribution of grade size is shown to be Poisson.

Two types of processes occurring in queues with stationary inputs are considered. They are called ‘time processes’ and ‘customer processes’. Sufficient conditions for the convergence of sample averages and the existence of limiting distributions for each type of processes are given. The results generalize those of Loynes (1962). The results are applied to three queueing processes and the Little's formula L = λW is obtained under rather general conditions.

Let X1, X2, …, Xn be independent identically distributed positive integer-valued random variables with order statistics X1:n, X2:n, …, Xn:n. If the Xi's have a geometric distribution then the conditional distribution of Xk+1:n – Xk:n given Xk+1:n – Xk:n > 0 is the same as the distribution of X1:n–k. Also the random variable X2:n – X1:n is independent of the event [X1:n = 1]. Under mild conditions each of these two properties characterizes the geometric distribution.

n jobs are to be preemptively scheduled for processing on n machines. The machines may have differing speeds and the jobs have processing requirements which are distributed as independent exponential random variables with different means. Holding cost g(U) is incurred per unit time that the set of uncompleted jobs is U and it is desired to minimize the total expected holding cost which is incurred until all jobs are complete. We show that if g satisfies certain simple conditions then the optimal policy is one which takes the jobs in the order 1, 2, ···, n and assigns each uncompleted job in turn to the fastest available machine. In the special case in which the objective is to minimize the expected weighted flowtime, where there is a holding cost of wi while job i is incomplete, the sufficient condition is simply w1 ≧ … ≧ wn and λ1 w1 ≧ … ≧ λn wn.

We study the problem of optimal customer admission to multiserver queues. These queues are assumed to live in an extraneous environment which changes in a semi-Markovian way. Arrivals, service mechanism and random reward/cost structure may all depend on these surroundings. Included as special cases are SM/M/c queues, in particular G/M/c queues, in a random environment. By a direct inductive approach we establish optimality of a generalized control-limit rule depending on the actual environment. Particular emphasis is laid on different applications that show the versatility of the proposed setup.

Let {Xn, n ≧ 1} be i.i.d. and Yn = max {X1,…, Xn}. Xj is a record value of {Xn} if Yj > Yj–1 The record value times are Ln, n ≧ 1 and inter-record times are Δn, n ≧ 1. The known limiting behavior of {Ln} and {Δn} is close to that of a non-homogeneous Poisson process and an explanation of this is obtained by embedding {Yn} in a suitable extremal process which jumps according to a non-homogeneous Poisson process.

We show that if the increment distribution of a renewal process has some convolution non-singular with respect to Lebesgue measure, then the skeletons of the forward recurrence time process are φ-irreducible positive recurrent Markov chains. Known convergence properties of such chains give simple proofs of uniform versions of some old and new key renewal theorems; these show in particular that non-singularity assumptions on the increment and initial distributions enable the assumption of direct Riemann integrability to be dropped from the standard key renewal theorem. An application to Markov renewal processes is given.

Consider a stationary Markov chain with state space consisting of the ξ -letter alphabet set Λ= {a1, a2, ···, aξ }. We study the variables M=M(n, k) and N=N(n, k), defined, respectively, as the number of overlapping and non-overlapping occurrences of a fixed periodic k-letter word, and use the Stein–Chen method to obtain compound Poisson approximations for their distribution.

Monotonicity of throughput is established in some non-Markovian queueing networks by means of pathwise comparisons. In a series of · /GI/s/N queues with loss at the first node it is proved that increasing the waiting room and/or the number of servers increases the throughput. For a closed network of · /GI/s queues it is shown that the throughput increases as the total number of jobs increases. The technique used for these results does not apply to blocking systems with finite buffers and feedback. Using a stronger coupling argument we prove throughput monotonicity as a function of buffer size for a series of two ·/M/1/N queues with loss and feedback from the second to the first node.

The quasi-stationary behaviour of a Markov chain which is φ-irreducible when restricted to a subspace of a general state space is investigated. It is shown that previous work on the case where the subspace is finite or countably infinite can be extended to general chains, and the existence of certain quasi-stationary limits as honest distributions is equivalent to the restricted chain being R-positive with the unique R-invariant measure satisfying a certain finiteness condition.

We study a class of load-balancing algorithms for many-server systems (N servers). Each server has a buffer of size $b-1$ with $b=O(\sqrt{\log N})$, i.e. a server can have at most one job in service and $b-1$ jobs queued. We focus on the steady-state performance of load-balancing algorithms in the heavy traffic regime such that the load of the system is $\lambda = 1 - \gamma N^{-\alpha}$ for $0<\alpha<0.5$ and $\gamma > 0,$ which we call the sub-Halfin–Whitt regime ($\alpha=0.5$ is the so-called Halfin–Whitt regime). We establish a sufficient condition under which the probability that an incoming job is routed to an idle server is 1 asymptotically (as $N \to \infty$) at steady state. The class of load-balancing algorithms that satisfy the condition includes join-the-shortest-queue, idle-one-first, join-the-idle-queue, and power-of-d-choices with $d\geq \frac{r}{\gamma}N^\alpha\log N$ (r a positive integer). The proof of the main result is based on the framework of Stein’s method. A key contribution is to use a simple generator approximation based on state space collapse.

In this paper we give bounds on the total variation distance from convergence of a continuous time positive recurrent Markov process on an arbitrary state space, based on Foster-Lyapunov drift and minorisation conditions. Considerably improved bounds are given in the stochastically monotone case, for both discrete and continuous time models, even in the absence of a reachable minimal element. These results are applied to storage models and to diffusion processes.

This paper presents the form of some characteristics of the Voronoi tessellation which is generated by a stationary Poisson process in . Expressions are given for the spherical and linear contact distribution functions. These formulae lead to numerically tractable double-integral formulae for chord length probability density functions.

We develop a representation for general queueing networks, and study some stochastic monotonicity properties that have been previously established in Jackson networks (e.g. Shanthikumar and Yao (1986), (1987)).

For each n > 0, the Ewens sampling formula from population genetics is a measure on the set of all partitions of the integer n. To determine the limiting distributions for the part sizes of a partition with respect to the measures given by this formula, we associate to each partition a step function on [0, 1]. Each jump in the function equals the number of parts in the partition of a certain size. We normalize these functions and show that the induced measures on D[0, 1] converge to Wiener measure. This result complements Kingman's frequency limit theorem [10] for the Ewens partition structure.

Suppose that a device is subjected to shocks and that denotes the probability of surviving k shocks. Then is the probability that the device will survive beyond t, where is the counting process which governs the arrival of shocks. A-Hameed and Proschan (1975) considered the survival function H(t) under what they called the pure birth shock model. In this paper we shall prove that is IFRA and DMRL under conditions which differ from those used by A-Hameed and Proschan (1975).

We consider a class of stationary infinite-order moving average processes with margins in the class of infinitely divisible exponential dispersion models. The processes are constructed by means of the thinning operation of Joe (1996), generalizing the binomial thinning used by McKenzie (1986, 1988) and Al-Osh and Alzaid (1987) for integer-valued time series. As a special case we obtain a class of autoregressive moving average processes that are different from the ARMA models proposed by Joe (1996). The range of possible marginal distributions for the new models is extensive and includes all infinitely divisible distributions with finite moment generating functions, hereunder many known discrete, continuous and mixed distributions.

This paper formulates the random process of line-segments in the Euclidean plane. Under conditions more general than Poisson, expressions are obtained, for Borel A ⊂ R2, for the first moments of M(A), the number of segment mid-points in A; N(A), the number of segments which intersect with convex A; S(A), the total length within A of segments crossing A; and C(A) the number of segment-segment crossings within A. In the case of Poisson mid-points, the distribution of the rth nearest line-segment to a given point is found.
