In this paper we deal with an M/G/1 vacation system with the sojourn time (wait plus service) limit and two typical vacation rules, i.e. multiple and single vacation rules. Using the level crossing approach, explicit expressions for the steady-state distributions of the virtual waiting times are obtained in vacation systems with exponential and constant service times, a general vacation time, and two vacation rules.

In the excavation of archaeological remains of high value, a search tool with low cost can be used at first, but if we reach a stratum which is very likely to contain valuable material we must use a search tool with high efficiency to reduce the risk of destruction of the remains even if this is more expensive. Which tool should we use at each time? Furthermore, if the search costs too much in comparison with the reward of detection, it is not profitable to go on searching for ever. When should we stop the search? We answer these questions for continuous and discrete models.

Processes whose entities would be independent but whose behaviour is influenced by environmental variables, which they in turn affect, are processes with mediated interactions. The independent open migration process with which is associated a random variable, the excitation, is such a process. This self-excited (conditionally) independent open migration process, with finite excitation, is related to a derived process, its piecewise-deterministic analogue. The correspondence gives insight into the process, as well as an equilibrium independence result. A simple example illustrates the presence of paroxysmal phenomena.

The mean square and almost sure convergence of W(t) = e–αtZ(t) is proved for a super-critical multitype age-dependent branching process allowing immigration at the epochs of a renewal process. It is shown that the Malthusian parameter, asymptotic frequencies of types and stationary age distributions are the same for the processes with and without immigration.

This paper considers functional dependence from a general standpoint. Some basic ideas are explored and the extent of functional dependence studied. These are illustrated by means of simple linear regression.

Let {Zn} be a finite mean supercritical Bienaymé– Galton–Watson process. It is known that there exist norming constants {Cn} such that {Zn/Cn} converges almost surely to a limit W. Also there is a whole literature concerning properties of {Cn} and W. We attempt a new approach to the limit theory of {Zn} by relating it to the theory of sums of independent and identically distributed random variables.

The coupling method of Ball (1986) is extended to carrier-borne epidemics, thus providing a new proof of a result of Daniels (1972) concerning the total size distribution of Downton's stochastic carrier-borne epidemic. The generalization to multipopulation carrier-borne epidemics is immediate.

We present a brief summary of some results related to deriving orthogonal representations of second-order random fields and its application in solving linear prediction problems. In the homogeneous and/or isotropic case, the spectral theory provides an orthogonal expansion in terms of spherical harmonics, called spectral decomposition (Yadrenko 1983). A prediction formula based on this orthogonal representation is shown. Finally, an application of this formula in solving a real-data problem related to prospective geophysics techniques is presented.

This paper provides a detailed stochastic analysis of leucocyte cell movement based on the dynamics of a rigid body. The cell's behavior is studied in two relevant anisotropic environments displaying adhesion mediated movement (haptotaxis) and stimulus mediated movement (chemotaxis). This behavior is modeled by diffusion processes on three successively longer time scales, termed locomotion, translocation, and migration.

Let X(t) be a continuous time Markov process on the integers such that, if σ is a time at which X makes a jump, X(σ)– X(σ–) is distributed independently of X(σ–), and has finite mean μ and variance. Let q(j) denote the residence time parameter for the state j. If tn denotes the time of the nth jump and Xn ≡ X(tb), it is easy to deduce limit theorems for from those for sums of independent identically distributed random variables. In this paper, it is shown how, for μ > 0 and for suitable q(·), these theorems can be translated into limit theorems for X(t), by using the continuous mapping theorem.

A neural model with N interacting neurons is considered. A firing of neuron i delays the firing times of all other neurons by the same random variable θ(i), and in isolation the firings of the neuron occur according to a renewal process with generic interarrival time Y(i). The stationary distribution of the N-vector of inhibitions at a firing time is computed, and involves waiting distributions of GI/G/1 queues and ladder height renewal processes. Further, the distribution of the period of activity of a neuron is studied for the symmetric case where θ(i) and Y(i) do not depend upon i. The tools are probabilistic and involve path decompositions, Palm theory and random walks.

We introduce extensions to an infinite-allele branching process that allows for multiple types to exist alongside labels. We consider a Markov branching process and general branching process under different assumptions, and show asymptotic results about the growth of the labels as well as the frequency spectrum. These results are motivated by two separate models. The Markov binary splitting results are motivated by a model of clonal evolution in cancer that considers the effect of both driver and passenger mutations on tumor growth. The general process has applications in viral reproduction and dynamics.

For a Brownian bridge from 0 to y, we prove that the mean of the first exit time from the interval $\left( -h,h \right),h>0$ , behaves as ${\mathrm{O}}(h^2)$ when $h \downarrow 0$ . Similar behaviour is also seen to hold for the three-dimensional Bessel bridge. For the Brownian bridge and three-dimensional Bessel bridge, this mean of the first exit time has a puzzling representation in terms of the Kolmogorov distribution. The result regarding the Brownian bridge is applied to provide a detailed proof of an estimate needed by Walsh to determine the convergence of the binomial tree scheme for European options.

A widely used model of carcinogenesis assumes that cells must go through a process of acquiring several mutations before they become cancerous. This implies that at any time there will be several populations of cells at different stages of mutation. In this paper we give exact expressions for the expectations and variances of the number of cells in each stage of such a stochastic multistage cancer model.

Considering a representative agent in the market, we study the long-term optimal investment problem in a discrete-time financial market, introducing a set of restrictions in the admissible strategies. The drawdown constraints limit the size of possible losses of the portfolio and impose a floor-based performance measure. The optimal growth rate is characterized, and under suitable hypotheses it is proved that an optimal strategy exists. The approach to solving this problem is based on dynamic programming techniques and a fixed point argument adapted from the theory of Markov decision processes.

We consider the random splitting and aggregating of Hawkes processes. We present the random splitting schemes using the direct approach for counting processes, as well as the immigration–birth branching representations of Hawkes processes. From the second scheme, it is shown that random split Hawkes processes are again Hawkes. We discuss functional central limit theorems (FCLTs) for the scaled split processes from the different schemes. On the other hand, aggregating multivariate Hawkes processes may not necessarily be Hawkes. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for the aggregated process to be Hawkes. We prove an FCLT for a multivariate Hawkes process under a random splitting and then aggregating scheme (under certain conditions, transforming into a Hawkes process of a different dimension).

We study the so-called frog model on ${\mathbb{Z}}$ with two types of lazy frogs, with parameters $p_1,p_2\in (0,1]$ respectively, and a finite expected number of dormant frogs per site. We show that for any such $p_1$ and $p_2$ there is positive probability that the two types coexist (i.e. that both types activate infinitely many frogs). This answers a question of Deijfen, Hirscher, and Lopes in dimension one.

In this paper we study the Robbins–Monro procedure Xn+1 = Xn - an-1Yn with some fixed number a > 0 and establish the moderate deviation principle of the process {Xn}.
