Growth-fragmentation processes describe the evolution of systems in which cells grow slowly and fragment suddenly. Despite originating as a way to describe biological phenomena, they have recently been found to describe the lengths of certain curves in statistical physics models. In this note, we describe a new growth-fragmentation process connected to random planar maps with faces of large degree, having as a key ingredient the ricocheted stable process recently discovered by Budd. The process has applications to the excursions of planar Brownian motion and Liouville quantum gravity.

Stein’s method is used to study discrete representations of multidimensional distributions that arise as approximations of states of quantum harmonic oscillators. These representations model how quantum effects result from the interaction of finitely many classical ‘worlds’, with the role of sample size played by the number of worlds. Each approximation arises as the ground state of a Hamiltonian involving a particular interworld potential function. Our approach, framed in terms of spherical coordinates, provides the rate of convergence of the discrete approximation to the ground state in terms of Wasserstein distance. Applying a novel Stein’s method technique to the radial component of the ground state solution, the fastest rate of convergence to the ground state is found to occur in three dimensions.

In this paper we study first passage percolation on a random graph model, the configuration model. We first introduce the notions of weighted diameter, which is the maximum of the weighted lengths of all optimal paths between any two vertices in the graph, and the flooding time, which represents the time (weighted length) needed to reach all the vertices in the graph starting from a uniformly chosen vertex. Our result consists in describing the asymptotic behavior of the diameter and the flooding time, as the number of vertices n tends to infinity, in the case where the weight distribution G has an exponential tail behavior, and proving that this category of distributions is the largest possible for which the asymptotic behavior holds.

From the Poisson–Dirichlet diffusions to the Z-measure diffusions, they all have explicit transition densities. We show that the transition densities of the Z-measure diffusions can also be expressed as a mixture of a sequence of probability measures on the Thoma simplex. The coefficients are the same as the coefficients in the Poisson–Dirichlet diffusions. This fact will be uncovered by a dual process method in a special case where the Z-measure diffusions are established through an up–down chain in the Young graph.

We give a dynamic extension result of the (static) notion of a deviation measure. We also study distribution-invariant deviation measures and show that the only dynamic deviation measure which is law invariant and recursive is the variance.

The notion of ordered system signature, originally defined for independent and identical coherent systems, is first extended to the case of independent and non-identical coherent systems, and then some key properties that help simplify its computation are established. Through its use, a dynamic ordered system signature is defined next, which facilitates a systematic study of dynamic properties of several coherent systems under a life test. The theoretical results established here are then illustrated through some specific examples. Finally, the usefulness in the evaluation of aging used systems of the concepts introduced is demonstrated.

The logistic birth and death process is perhaps the simplest stochastic population model that has both density-dependent reproduction and a phase transition, and a lot can be learned about the process by studying its extinction time, $\tau_n$ , as a function of system size n. A number of existing results describe the scaling of $\tau_n$ as $n\to\infty$ for various choices of reproductive rate $r_n$ and initial population $X_n(0)$ as a function of n. We collect and complete this picture, obtaining a complete classification of all sequences $(r_n)$ and $(X_n(0))$ for which there exist rescaling parameters $(s_n)$ and $(t_n)$ such that $(\tau_n-t_n)/s_n$ converges in distribution as $n\to\infty$ , and identifying the limits in each case.

We prove that for a discrete determinantal process the BK inequality occurs for increasing events generated by simple points. We also give some elementary but nonetheless appealing relationships between a discrete determinantal process and the well-known CS decomposition.

This paper is devoted to the study of regime-switching jump diffusion processes with countable regimes. It aims to establish Foster–Lyapunov-type criteria for exponential ergodicity of such processes. After recalling results concerning the petiteness of compact sets, this paper presents sufficient conditions for the existence of a Foster–Lyapunov function; this, in turn, helps to establish sufficient conditions for the desired exponential ergodicity for regime-switching jump diffusion processes. Finally, an application to feedback control problems is presented.

We investigate the tail behaviour of the steady-state distribution of a stochastic recursion that generalises Lindley's recursion. This recursion arises in queueing systems with dependent interarrival and service times, and includes alternating service systems and carousel storage systems as special cases. We obtain precise tail asymptotics in three qualitatively different cases, and compare these with existing results for Lindley's recursion and for alternating service systems.

We propose a monotone approximation scheme for a class of fully nonlinear degenerate partial integro-differential equations which characterize nonlinear $\alpha$-stable Lévy processes under a sublinear expectation space with $\alpha\in(1,2)$. We further establish the error bounds for the monotone approximation scheme. This in turn yields an explicit Berry–Esseen bound and convergence rate for the $\alpha$-stable central limit theorem under sublinear expectation.

An alternative version of the necessary and sufficient condition for almost sure fixation in the conditional branching process model is derived. This formulation provides an insight into why the examples considered in Buckley and Seneta (1983) all have the same condition for fixation.

We analyze the notion of ‘reliability prediction’ by studying in detail a key property that is tacitly assumed to make reliability prediction possible. The analysis leads in turn to a special type of point process for which the connection of future to past can be explicitly displayed. In this type of process, the semi-renewal process, all finite-dimensional distributions are completely determined by the distribution of the time to the first event in the process. The theory provides a heretofore unappreciated unification of the two most commonly used reliability prediction models for maintained systems, namely, the renewal and revival processes. We show that familiar results from renewal theory extend and generalize to semi-renewal processes.

We calculate the mean throughput, number of collisions, successes, and idle slots for random tree algorithms with successive interference cancellation. Except for the case of the throughput for the binary tree, all the results are new. We furthermore disprove the claim that only the binary tree maximizes throughput. Our method works with many observables and can be used as a blueprint for further analysis.

We consider the lifetimes of systems that can be modeled as particles that move within a bounded region in ℝn. Particles move within the set according to a random walk, and particles that leave the set are lost. We divide the set into equal cells and define the lifetime of the set as the time required for the number of particles in one of the cells to fall below a predetermined threshold. We show that the lifetime of the system, given a sufficiently large number of particles, is Weibull distributed.

In this work we consider the mean-field traveling salesman problem, where the intercity distances are taken to be independent and identically distributed with some distribution F. We consider the simplest approximation algorithm, namely, the nearest-neighbor algorithm, where the rule is to move to the nearest nonvisited city. We show that the limiting behavior of the total length of the nearest-neighbor tour depends on the scaling properties of the density of F at 0 and derive the limits for all possible cases of general F.

In this paper we address the general issue of estimating the sensitivity of the expectation of a random variable with respect to a parameter characterizing its evolution. In finance, for example, the sensitivities of the price of a contingent claim are called the Greeks. A new way of estimating the Greeks has recently been introduced in Elie, Fermanian and Touzi (2007) through a randomization of the parameter of interest combined with nonparametric estimation techniques. In this paper we study another type of estimator that turns out to be closely related to the score function, which is well known to be the optimal Greek weight. This estimator relies on the use of two distinct kernel functions and the main interest of this paper is to provide its asymptotic properties. Under a slightly more stringent condition, its rate of convergence is the same as the one of the estimator introduced in Elie, Fermanian and Touzi (2007) and outperforms the finite differences estimator. In addition to the technical interest of the proofs, this result is very encouraging in the dynamic of creating new types of estimator for the sensitivities.

For a homogeneous random walk in the quarter plane with nearest-neighbor transitions, starting from some state (i0,j0), we study the event that the walk reaches the vertical axis, before reaching the horizontal axis. We derive a certain integral representation for the probability of this event, and an asymptotic expression for the case when i0 becomes large, a situation in which the event becomes highly unlikely. The integral representation follows from the solution of a boundary value problem and involves a conformal gluing function. The asymptotic expression follows from the asymptotic evaluation of this integral. Our results find applications in a model for nucleosome shifting, the voter model, and the asymmetric exclusion process.

We consider the generalized version in continuous time of the parking problem of Knuth introduced in Bansaye (2006). Files arrive following a Poisson point process and are stored on a hardware identified with the real line, at the right of their arrival point. Here we study the evolution of the endpoints of the data block straddling 0, which is empty at time 0 and is equal to R at a deterministic time.

We derive an expansion for the (expected) difference between the continuously monitored supremum and evenly monitored discrete maximum over a finite time horizon of a jump diffusion process with independent and identically distributed normal jump sizes. The monitoring error is of the form a 0 / N 1/2 + a 1 / N 3/2 + · · · + b 1 / N + b 2 / N 2 + b 4 / N 4 + · · ·, where N is the number of monitoring intervals. We obtain explicit expressions for the coefficients {a 0, a 1, …, b 1, b 2, …}. In particular, a 0 is proportional to the value of the Riemann zeta function at ½, a well-known fact that has been observed for Brownian motion in applied probability and mathematical finance.
