Let {Fn}n ≧ 0 be a sequence of c.d.f. and let {Rn}n ≧ 1 be the sequence of record values in a non-stationary record model where after the (n − 1)th record the population is distributed according to Fn. Then the equidistribution of the nth population and the record increment Rn – Rn– 1 (i.e. Rn – Rn– 1~ Fn) characterizes Fn to have an exponentially decreasing hazard function. To be more precise Fn is the exponential distribution if the support of Rn– 1 generates a dense subgroup in and otherwise the entity of all possible solutions can be obtained in the following way: let for simplicity the above additive subgroup be any c.d.f. F satisfying F(0) = 0, F(1) < 1 can be chosen arbitrarily. Setting λ = – log(1 – F(1)), Fn(x) = 1 – F(x – [x])exp(–λ [x]) is an admissible solution coinciding with F on the interval [0, 1] ([x] denotes the integer part of x). Simple additional assumptions ensuring that Fn is either exponential or geometric are given. Similar results for exponential or geometric tail distributions based on the independence of Rn– 1 and Rn – Rn– 1 are proved.

Let us consider n stocks with dependent price processes each following a geometric Brownian motion. We want to investigate the American perpetual put on an index of those stocks. We will provide inner and outer boundaries for its early exercise region by using a decomposition technique for optimal stopping.

A three-stage real diffusion process is used as a model of the T-cell count of an HIV-positive individual who is to receive antiviral therapy such as AZT. The ‘quality of life' of such a person is identified as the sojourn time of the diffusion process above a certain critical T-cell level c. The time of introducing therapy is defined as the first-passage time of the diffusion to a prescribed level z > c. The distribution of the sojourn time of the diffusion above the level c depends on the level z at which therapy is initiated. The expected sojourn time is explicitly computed as a function of z for the particular diffusion process defining the model. There is a simple criterion for determining when to start therapy as early as possible.

Using an approach similar to that of Guivarc'h and Hardy (1988), we show that the local limit theorem holds for a Markov chain on a countable state space, with non-uniform ergodicity, when the recurrence is fast enough. We present a detailed study of a typical example, the reflected random walk on the positive half-line with negative mean and finite exponential moment. The results can be extended to some random walks on ℕ.

It is known that in a stationary Brownian queue with both arrival and service processes equal in law to Brownian motion, the departure process is a Brownian motion, identical in law to the arrival process: this is the analogue of Burke's theorem in this context. In this paper we prove convergence in law to this Brownian motion in a tandem network of Brownian queues: if we have an arbitrary continuous process, satisfying some mild conditions, as an initial arrival process and pass it through an infinite tandem network of queues, the resulting process weakly converges to a Brownian motion. We assume independent and exponential initial workloads for all queues.

An extended model of order statistics based on possibly different distributions is introduced and analyzed. In the interpretation of successive failure times in a 𝑘-out-of-𝑛 system, say, until each failure, the time periods under previous (increasing) loads exerted on the remaining components are recorded. Then the lifetime distribution of the system depends on the complete failure scheme. Thus, order statistics with memory provide an alternative to the use of sequential order statistics, which form a Markov chain. The quantities as well as their spacings, the interoccurrence times, can be compared by means of stochastic ordering.

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour near extinction of (sub-)critical continuous-state branching processes. In particular, we establish an analogue of Khintchine's law of the iterated logarithm near extinction time for a continuous-state branching process whose branching mechanism satisfies a given condition.

We examine urn models under random replacement schemes, and the related distributions, by using generating functions. A fundamental isomorphism between urn models and a certain system of differential equations has previously been established. We study the joint distribution of the numbers of balls in the urn, and determined recurrence relations for the probability generating functions. The associated partial differential equation satisfied by the generating function is derived. We develop analytical methods for the study of urn models that can lead to perspectives on urn-related problems from analytic combinatorics. The results presented here provide a broader framework for the study of exactly solvable urns than the existing framework. Finally, we examine several applications and their numerical results in order to demonstrate how our theoretical results can be employed in the study of urn models.

In this paper we derive limit theorems for the conditional distribution of X1 given Sn=sn as n→ ∞, where the Xi are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables, Sn=X1+··· +Xn, and sn/n converges or sn ≡ s is constant. We obtain convergence in total variation of PX1∣ Sn/n=s to a distribution associated to that of X1 and of PnX1∣ Sn=s to a gamma distribution. The case of stable distributions (to which the method of associated distributions cannot be applied) is studied in detail.

We observe a sequence X 1, X 2,…, X n of independent and identically distributed coordinatewise nonnegative d-dimensional random vectors. When a vector is observed it can either be selected or rejected but once made this decision is final. In each coordinate the sum of the selected vectors must not exceed a given constant. The problem is to find a selection policy that maximizes the expected number of selected vectors. For a general absolutely continuous distribution of the X i we determine the maximal expected number of selected vectors asymptotically and give a selection policy which asymptotically achieves optimality. This problem raises a question closely related to the following problem. Given an absolutely continuous measure μ on Q = [0,1] d and a τ ∈ Q, find a set A of maximal measure μ(A) among all A ⊂ Q whose center of gravity lies below τ in all coordinates. We will show that a simplicial section { x ∈ Q | 〈 x , θ 〉 ≤ 1}, where θ ∈ ℝ d , θ ≥ 0, satisfies a certain additional property, is a solution to this problem.

Optical mapping is a new technique to generate restriction maps of DNA easily and quickly. DNA restriction maps can be aligned by comparing corresponding restriction fragment lengths. To relate, organize, and analyse these maps it is necessary to rapidly compare maps. The issue of the statistical significance of approximately matching maps then becomes central, as in BLAST with sequence scoring. In this paper, we study the approximation to the distribution of counts of matched regions of specified length when comparing two DNA restriction maps. Distributional results are given to enable us to compute p-values and hence to determine whether or not the two restriction maps are related. The key tool used is the Chen-Stein method of Poisson approximation. Certain open problems are described.

We consider a brokered market with heterogeneous suppliers and consumers of identical items or services. Each supplier determines a minimum acceptable price for the items it supplies, based on its costs and target rate of return. The broker begins with a fixed set of items from the suppliers. Customers arrive periodically to the market and offer a bid for an item. If a customer wants more than one item, a set of bids is made. If the broker accepts a bid it must be assigned an item with minimum accceptable price less than or equal to the bid, and the price paid is the bid price. The broker has the option of rejecting a bid. The broker makes acceptance and assignment decisions to maximize the total expected discounted revenue. We show the optimal policy has a simple threshold structure where thresholds can be easily determined by finding the individually optimal policies subject to priorities.

In 2002, Benjamin and Goldman gave a complete solution to a variant of the two-player card game Le Her. We extend their result by giving optimal strategies for the authentic version played with a deck consisting of arbitrary numbers of suits and denominations. Additionally, we show that the player who has the advantage in the game when one standard deck is used does not have the advantage if nineteen or more standard decks are used.

We prove the conjecture formulated in Litvak and Ejov (2009), namely, that the trace of the fundamental matrix of a singularly perturbed Markov chain that corresponds to a stochastic policy feasible for a given graph is minimised at policies corresponding to Hamiltonian cycles.

We study exponential families within the class of counting processes and show that a mixed Poisson process belongs to an exponential family if and only if it is either a Poisson process or has a gamma structure distribution. This property can be expressed via exponential martingales.

Consider a sequence of observations Yk = Xk + ek, where {Xk : 1 ≦ k < ∞} are i.i.d. random variables having distribution function F and {ek : 1 ≦ k < ∞} are arbitrary random errors of observation. The stochastic geyser problem asks for conditions under which F can be uniquely determined from a knowledge of the sequence of Yk's. The objective of the present article is to show that, if F is continuous and strictly increasing and the sample quantiles of successive blocks {Xn+ 1Xn+ 2, …, Xn+ K} of particular lengths K can be a.s. estimated to within an error of size o(1) as K →∞, then we can almost surely determine F from a single realization of {Yk : 1 ≦ k < ∞}.

We investigate the hyperuniformity of marked Gibbs point processes that have weak dependencies among distant points whilst the interactions of close points are kept arbitrary. Various stability and range assumptions are imposed on the Papangelou intensity in order to prove that the resulting point process is not hyperuniform. The scope of our results covers many frequently used models, including Gibbs point processes with a superstable, lower-regular, integrable pair potential, as well as the Widom–Rowlinson model with random radii and Gibbs point processes with interactions based on Voronoi tessellations and nearest-neighbour graphs.

We present a study of the joint distribution of both the state of a level-dependent quasi-birth–death (QBD) process and its associated running maximum level, at a fixed time t: more specifically, we derive expressions for the Laplace transforms of transition functions that contain this information, and the expressions we derive contain familiar constructs from the classical theory of QBD processes. Indeed, one important takeaway from our results is that the distribution of the running maximum level of a level-dependent QBD process can be studied using results that are highly analogous to the more well-established theory of level-dependent QBD processes that focuses primarily on the joint distribution of the level and phase. We also explain how our methods naturally extend to the study of level-dependent Markov processes of M/G/1 type, if we instead keep track of the running minimum level instead of the running maximum level.
