The susceptible→exposed→infectious→susceptible (SEIS) model is well known in mathematical epidemiology as a model of infection in which there is a latent period between the moment of infection and the onset of infectiousness. The compartment model is well studied, but the corresponding particle system has so far received no attention. For the particle system model in one spatial dimension, we give upper and lower bounds on the critical values, prove convergence of critical values in the limit of small and large latent time, and identify a limiting process to which the SEIS model converges in the limit of large latent time.

Infinite systems of interacting Markov chains are investigated. Some basic concepts of the ergodic theory of such systems are first presented. In particular, the question of the uniqueness and multiplicity of invariant probability measures is considered. In the case of one-dimensional systems, the question is studied in detail by investigating the flow of information throughout the system and some criteria for the uniqueness of invariant probability measures are obtained.

Items arrive at a processing plant at a Poisson rate λ. At time T, all items are dispatched from the system. An intermediate dispatch time is to be chosen to minimize the total wait of all items. It is shown that if the dispatch time must be chosen at time 0 then T/2 not only minimizes the expected total wait but it also maximizes the probability that the total wait is less than a for every a > 0. If the intermediate dispatch time is allowed to be a (random) stopping time, then it is shown that the policy which dispatches at time t iff N(t) > λ(T – t) is optimal, where N(t) denotes the number of items present at time t. The distribution of the optimal dispatch time and the optimal expected total wait are determined. A generalization to the case of a non-homogeneous Poisson process, a time lag, and batch arrivals is given. Finally, the case where the process goes on indefinitely and any number of dispatches are allowed (at a cost K per dispatch) is considered.

In completely or partially oriented percolation models, a conceptually simple method, using barriers to enclose all open paths from the origin, improves the best previous lower bounds for the critical percolation probabilities.

This article deals with the generalized Smoluchowski process, {n(t), t ≧ 0}, defined by the temporal fluctuating of the numbers of randomly moving particles contained in m < ∞ disjoint regions of space. The relationship of the Smoluchowski process {n(t), t ≧ 0} to the emigration–immigration process is discussed and conditions for their equivalence are presented.

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has emerged as an ideal model system to study the dynamics of prion proteins which are responsible for a number of fatal neurodegenerative diseases in humans. Within an infected cell, prion proteins aggregate in complexes which may increase in size or be fragmented and are transmitted upon cell division. Recent work in yeast suggests that only aggregates below a critical size are transmitted efficiently. We formulate a continuous-time branching process model of a yeast colony under conditions of prion curing. We generalize previous approaches by providing an explicit formula approximating prion loss as influenced by both aggregate growth and size-dependent transmission.

The eigentime identity for one-dimensional diffusion processes on the halfline with an entrance boundary at ∞ is obtained by using the trace of the deviation kernel. For the case of an exit boundary at ∞, a similar eigentime identity is presented with the aid of the Green function. Explicit equivalent statements are also listed in terms of the strong ergodicity or the uniform decay for diffusion processes.

We consider a single-server queue with Poisson input operating under first-come–first-served (FCFS) or last-come–first-served (LCFS) disciplines. The service times of the customers are independent and obey a general distribution. The system is subject to costs for holding a customer per unit of time, which can be customer specific or customer class specific. We give general expressions for the corresponding value functions, which have elementary compact forms, similar to the Pollaczek–Khinchine mean value formulae. The results generalize earlier work where similar expressions have been obtained for specific service time distributions. The obtained value functions can be readily applied to develop nearly optimal dispatching policies for a broad range of systems with parallel queues, including multiclass scenarios and the cases where service time estimates are available.

The notion of conditional comonotonicity was first used implicitly by Kaas, Dhaene, and Goovaerts (2000) and was formally introduced by Jouini and Napp (2004) as a generalization of the classical concept of comonotonicity. The objective of the present paper is to further investigate this relatively new concept. The main result is that a random vector is comonotonic conditional to a certain σ-field if and only if it is almost surely comonotonic locally on each atom of the conditioning σ-field. We also provide a new proof of a distributional representation and an almost sure representation of a conditionally comonotonic random vector.

This condition is equivalent to Qjin → ∞ for one (and then every) state j, or to E(Tjj2) = ∞ for one (and then every) state j, and when it holds, (Qijn / πj) / (Qkkn / πk) → 1 for n → ∞ for any triplet of states i, jk.

Probability theory, and its dynamic aspect stochastic process theory, is both a venerable subject, in that its roots go back to the mid-seventeenth century, and a young one, in that its modern formulation happened comparatively recently - well within living memory. The year 2003 marked the seventieth anniversary of Kolmogorov's Grundbegriffe der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung, usually regarded as having inaugurated modern (measure-theoretic) probability theory. It also marked the fiftieth anniversary of Doob's Stochastic Processes. The profound and continuing influence of this classic work prompts the present piece.

We consider a serialized coin-tossing leader election algorithm that proceeds in rounds until a winner is chosen, or all contestants are eliminated. The analysis allows for either biased or fair coins. We find the exact distribution for the duration of any fixed contestant; asymptotically, it turns out to be a geometric distribution. Rice's method (an analytic technique) shows that the moments of the duration contain oscillations, which we give explicitly for the mean and variance. We also use convergence in the Wasserstein metric space to show that the distribution of the total number of coin flips (among all participants), suitably normalized, approaches a normal limiting random variable.

Under the assumption of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) components, the problem of the stochastic comparison of a coherent system having used components and a used coherent system has been considered. Necessary and sufficient conditions on structure functions have been provided for the stochastic comparison of a coherent system having used/inactive i.i.d. components and a used/inactive coherent system. As a consequence, for r-out-of-n systems, it has been shown that systems having used i.i.d. components stochastically dominate used systems in the likelihood ratio ordering.

We compare dependence in stochastically monotone Markov processes with partially ordered Polish state spaces using the concordance and supermodular orders. We show necessary and sufficient conditions for the concordance order to hold both in terms of the one-step transition probabilities for discrete-time processes and in terms of the corresponding infinitesimal generators for continuous-time processes. We give examples showing that a stochastic monotonicity assumption is not necessary for such orderings. We indicate relations between dependence orderings and, variously, the asymptotic variance-reduction effect in Monte Carlo Markov chains, Cheeger constants, and positive dependence for Markov processes.

Motivated by mathematical tissue growth modelling, we consider the problem of approximating the dynamics of multicolor Pólya urn processes that start with large numbers of balls of different colors and run for a long time. Using strong approximation theorems for empirical and quantile processes, we establish Gaussian process approximations for the Pólya urn processes. The approximating processes are sums of a multivariate Brownian motion process and an independent linear drift with a random Gaussian coefficient. The dominating term between the two depends on the ratio of the number of time steps n to the initial number of balls N in the urn. We also establish an upper bound of the form $c(n^{-1/2}+N^{-1/2})$ for the maximum deviation over the class of convex Borel sets of the step-n urn composition distribution from the approximating normal law.

Consider n jobs and m machines. The m machines are identical and set up in parallel. All n jobs are available at t = 0 and each job has to be processed on one of the machines; any one can do. The processing time of job j is Xj, a random variable with distribution Fj. The sequence in which the jobs start with their processing is predetermined and preemptions are not allowed. We investigate the effect of the variability of the processing times on the expected makespan and the expected time to first idleness. Bounds are presented for these quantities in case the distributions of the processing times of the jobs are new better (worse) than used.

We use embedding techniques to analyse the error of approximation of an optimal stopping problem along Brownian paths when Brownian motion is approximated by a random walk.

A necessary and sufficient set of conditions is given for the finiteness of a general moment of the R -invariant measure of an R -recurrent substochastic matrix. The conditions are conceptually related to Foster's theorem. The result extends that of [8], and is illustratively applied to the single and multitype subcritical Galton–Watson process to find conditions for Yaglom-type conditional limit distributions to have finite moments.

We study the convergence of certain matrix sequences that arise in quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) Markov chains and we identify their limits. In particular, we focus on a sequence of matrices whose elements are absorption probabilities into some boundary states of the QBD. We prove that, under certain technical conditions, that sequence converges. Its limit is either the minimal nonnegative solution G of the standard nonlinear matrix equation, or it is a stochastic solution that can be explicitly expressed in terms of G. Similar results are obtained relative to the standard matrix R that arises in the matrix-geometric solution of the QBD. We present numerical examples that clarify some of the technical issues of interest.

A realistic non-Poisson arrival process is used in a model for intersections controlled by fixed-cycle traffic lights. Average delays, queue sizes and percentage of delayed vehicles are derived. The distribution of the number of vehicles which pass through during the green phases is found. Certain model anomalies which are inherent in earlier work are eliminated by the use of this model.
