Throughout this note, rings will mean associative rings with identity and all modules are unital. A ring R is called right artinian if R satisfies the descending chain condition for right ideals. It is known that not every ideal of a right artinian ring is right artinian as a ring, in general. However, if every ideal of a right artinian ring R is right artinian then R is called hereditarily artinian. The structure of hereditarily artinian rings was described completely by Kertész and Widiger [5] from which, in the case of rings with identity, we get:

A ring R is hereditarily artinian if and only if R is a direct sum S ⊕ F of a semiprime right artinian ring S and a finite ring F.

Let A = ρ2∑i,jAijθi ⊗ θj and B = ρ2∑i,jBij θi ⊗ θj be the Blaschke tensor and the Möbius second fundamental form of the immersion x. Let D = A + λB be the para-Blaschke tensor of x, where λ is a constant. If x: Mn ↦ Sn + 1(1) is an n-dimensional para-Blaschke isoparametric hypersurface in a unit sphere Sn + 1(1) and x has three distinct Blaschke eigenvalues one of which is simple or has three distinct Möbius principal curvatures one of which is simple, we obtain the full classification theorems of the hypersurface.

We compute the Grothendieck and Picard groups of a smooth toric DM stack by using a suitable category of graded modules over a polynomial ring. The polynomial ring with a suitable grading and suitable irrelevant ideal functions is a homogeneous coordinate ring for the stack.

Given a group G and a positive integer k, let vk(G) denote the number of conjugacy classes of subgroups of G which are not subnormal of defect at most k. Groups G such that vkG) < ∝ for some k are considered in Section 2 of [1], and Theorem 2.4 of that paper states that an infinite group G for which vk(G) < ∝ (for some k) is nilpotent provided only that all chief factors of G are locally (soluble or finite). Now it is easy to see that a group G whose chief factors are of this type is locally graded, that is, every nontrivial, finitely generated subgroup F of G has a nontrivial finite image (since there is a chief factor H/K of G such that F is contained in H but not in K). On the other hand, every (locally) free group is locally graded and so there is in general no restriction on the chief factors of such groups. The class of locally graded groups is a suitable class to consider if one wishes to do no more than exclude the occurrence of finitely generated, infinite simple groups and, in particular, Tarski p-groups. As pointed out in [1], Ivanov and Ol'shanskiĭ have constructed (finitely generated) infinite simple groups all of whose proper nontrivial subgroups are conjugate; clearly a group G with this property satisfies v1(G) = l. The purpose of this note is to provide the following generalization of the above-mentioned theorem from [1].

We consider the standard action of the dihedral group $\bf{D}_n$ of order $2n$ on $\bf{C}$. This representation is absolutely irreducible and so the corresponding Hopf bifurcation occurs on $\bf{C} \oplus \bf{C}$. Golubitsky and Stewart (Hopf bifurcation with dihedral group symmetry: Coupled nonlinear oscillators. In: Multiparameter Bifurcation Series, M. Golubitsky and J. Guckenheimer, eds., Contemporary Mathematics 46, Am. Math. Soc., Providence, R.I. 1986, 131–173) and van Gils and Valkering (Hopf bifurcation and symmetry: standing and travelling waves in a circular chain. Japan J. Appl. Math.3, 207–222, 1986) prove the generic existence of three branches of periodic solutions, up to conjugacy, in systems of ordinary differential equations with $\bf{D}_n$-symmetry, depending on one real parameter, that present Hopf bifurcation. These solutions are found by using the Equivariant Hopf Theorem. We prove that generically, when $n\neq 4$ and assuming Birkhoff normal form, these are the only branches of periodic solutions that bifurcate from the trivial solution.

We define and study generalizations of simplicial volume over arbitrary seminormed rings with a focus on p-adic simplicial volumes. We investigate the dependence on the prime and establish homology bounds in terms of p-adic simplicial volumes. As the main examples, we compute the weightless and p-adic simplicial volumes of surfaces. This is based on an alternative way to calculate classical simplicial volume of surfaces without hyperbolic straightening and shows that surfaces satisfy mod p and p-adic approximation of simplicial volume.

Little is known about the generators system of the higher dimensional Picard modular groups. In this paper, we prove that the higher dimensional Eisenstein–Picard modular group PU(3, 1;ℤ[ω3]) in three complex dimensions can be generated by four given transformations.

Quaternionic vector mKDV equations are derived from the Cartan structure equation in the symmetric space = Sp(n+1)/Sp(1) × Sp(n). The derivation of the soliton hierarchy utilizes a moving parallel frame and a Cartan connection 1-form ω related to the Cartan geometry on modelled on . The integrability structure is shown to be geometrically encoded by a Poisson–Nijenhuis structure and a symplectic operator.

Voevodsky has conjectured that numerical equivalence and smash-equivalence coincide for algebraic cycles on any smooth projective variety. Building on work of Vial and Kahn–Sebastian, we give some new examples of varieties where Voevodsky's conjecture is verified.

We provide a complete local classification of pseudo-parallel sub-manifolds with flat normal bundle of space forms, extending the classification by Dillen-Nölker for the semi-parallel case.

Given any finite group G, we wish to determine a relationship between the highest power of a prime p dividing the order of G, denoted by |G|p, and |A(G)|p, where A(G) is the automorphism group of G. It was shown by Herstein and Adney [8] that |A(G)|p ≧ p whenever |G|p= ≧P2. Later Scott [16] showed that A(G)p≧P2. For the special case where G is abelian, Hilton [9] proved that Adney [1] showed that this result holds if a Sylow p-subgroup of G is abelian, and gave an example where |G|p= p4 and |A(G)|P =p2. We are able to show in Theorem 4.5 that, if |G|p = ≧ p5, then |A(G)| = ≧ p3.

Recall that a Noetherian ring R is a Hilbert ring if the Jacobson radical of every factor ring of R is nilpotent. As one of the main results of [13], J. E. Roseblade proved that if J is a commutative Hilbert ring and G is a polycyclic-by-finite group then JG is a Hilbert ring. The main theorem of this paper is a generalisation of this result in the case where all the field images of J are absolute fields—we shall say that J is absolutely Hilbert. The result is stated in terms of the (Gabriel–Rentschler–) Krull dimension; the definition and basic properties of this may be found in [5]. From the proof of Theorem 2 of [5] it follows that for every positive integer k there exist infinitely many primes p in the arithmetical progression ax + b (x = 0, 1, 2,…), where a and b are relatively prime positive integers, such that the number 2p−1 − 1 has at least k composite factors of the form (p − 1)x + 1. The following question arises:

For any given natural number k, do there exist infinitely many primes p such that the number 2p−1 − 1 has k prime factors of the form(p − 1)x + 1 and p ≡ b (mod a), where a and b are coprime positive integers?

Recent work [2, 6] on subalgebras of matrix algebras leads naturally to the following situation. Let A be a C*-subalgebra of the C*-algebra B andM be a weakly closed *-subalgebra of the von Neumann algebra N. Consider the following Conditions.

Condition 1. For every b≠ 0 in B there exists a ∈ A such that O≠ab ∈ A.

Condition 2. For every b∈B there exists a ≠ 0 in A such that ab ∈ A.

If we replace A by M and B by N in Conditions 1 and 2 we get von Neumann algebra versions which we shall call Condition 1'and Condition 2'. Clearly Condition 1 implies Condition 2, and both conditions suggest that A is some kind of weak ideal of B. This paper explores the extent to which this is true. The paper grew out of the author's attempts [1, 3] to generalize the Stone-Weierstrass theorem to C*-algebras.

Let 𝔟 be the Borel subalgebra of the Lie algebra 𝔰𝔩2 and V2 be the simple two-dimensional 𝔰𝔩2-module. For the universal enveloping algebra $\[{\cal A}: = U(\gb \ltimes {V_2})\]$ of the semi-direct product 𝔟⋉V2 of Lie algebras, the prime, primitive and maximal spectra are classified. Please approve edit to the sentence “The sets of completely prime…”.The sets of completely prime ideals of $\[{\cal A}\]$ are described. The simple unfaithful $\[{\cal A}\]$-modules are classified and an explicit description of all prime factor algebras of $\[{\cal A}\]$ is given. The following classes of simple U(𝔟⋉V2)-modules are classified: the Whittaker modules, the 𝕂[X]-torsion modules and the 𝕂[E]-torsion modules.

We present the concept of cotorsion pairs cut along subcategories of an abelian category. This provides a generalization of complete cotorsion pairs, and represents a general framework to find approximations restricted to certain subcategories. We also exhibit some connections between cut cotorsion pairs and Auslander–Buchweitz approximation theory, by considering relative analogs for Frobenius pairs and Auslander–Buchweitz contexts. Several applications are given in the settings of relative Gorenstein homological algebra, chain complexes, and quasi-coherent sheaves, as well as to characterize some important results on the Finitistic Dimension Conjecture, the existence of right adjoints of quotient functors by Serre subcategories, and the description of cotorsion pairs in triangulated categories as co-t-structures.

Let k be a divisor of a finite group G and Lk(G) = {x ∈ G | xk =1}. Frobenius proved that the number |Lk(G)| is always divisible by k. The following inverse problem is considered: for a given integer n, find all groups G such that max{k-1|Lk(G)| | k ∈ Div(G)} = n, where Div(G) denotes the set of all divisors of |G|. A procedure beginning with (in a sense) minimal members and deducing the remaining ones is outlined and executed for n=8.

Since its elaboration in 1983 by Weiss, Tabor and Carnevale, the method to explicitly build the Bäcklund transformation of a partial differential equation (PDE) from singularity analysis only has been improved in several complementary directions, and at the present time it succeeds for practically all PDEs in 1+1-dimensions. The current state of the art is presented, and the emphasis is put on understanding the method. There are two important stages: first, the definition (identified with a Darboux transformation) of a resummation variable to make the Laurent series a finite one as requested by the definition of the word integrability; second, the link (identified with a linearizing formula to be taken from the classification of Painlevé and Gambier) between this resummation variable and the Lax pair to be found.
