In this paper, we prove a theorem concerning asymptotic estimates of the eigenvalues of certain positive integral operators with Laplace transform type kernels.

Let $C\; : \;y^2=f(x)$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g\geq 1$, defined over a complete discretely valued field $K$, with ring of integers $O_K$. Under certain conditions on $C$, mild when residue characteristic is not $2$, we explicitly construct the minimal regular model with normal crossings $\mathcal{C}/O_K$ of $C$. In the same setting we determine a basis of integral differentials of $C$, that is an $O_K$-basis for the global sections of the relative dualising sheaf $\omega _{\mathcal{C}/O_K}$.

We are interested in two parameter eigenvalue problems of the form

The weight function 5 and the potential q will both be assumed to lie in L2[0,1]. The problem (1.1), (1.2) generates eigencurves

in the sense that for any fixed λ, ν(λ) is the nth eigenvalue ν, (according to oscillation indexing) of (1.1), (1.2). These curves are in fact analytic functions of λ and have been the object of considerable study in recent years. The survey paper [1] provides background in this area and itemises properties of eigencurves.

The development of the theory of absolute integrals derives from certain key facts. Among them are:

(I) An integral is a positive linear functional on a vector lattice, which is continuous in a certain sense.

(II) A function equal almost everywhere to a summable function is itself summable.

(III) Every measurable function is the pointwise limit of a sequence of elementary step functions.

A device that often plays an important role in measure theory, but which has not beenfully exploited in the theory of abstract integrals is that of

(IV) the smallest class containing a given class and having a certain property

(such as being a σ-ring of sets). It is our purpose in this paper to examine the theory of abstract real-valued absolute integrals axiomatically, in such a way as to isolate and clarify the roles of (I) through (IV).

We prove some inequalities for the spectral radius of positive operators on Banach function spaces. In particular, we prove the following extension of Levinger's theorem. Let $K$ be a positive compact kernel operator on $L^2(X, \mu)$ with the spectral radius $r(K)$. Then the function $\phi$ defined by $\phi(t) = r(t K + (1-t) K^*)$ is non-decreasing on $[0, \frac{1}{2}]$. We also prove that $\| A + B^* \| \ge 2 \cdot \sqrt{r(A B)}$ for any positive operators $A$ and $B$ on $L^2(X, \mu)$.

It is proved that the subalgebra of constants of a derivation on a free associative algebra in prime characteristic is free provided that some constraining conditions are satisfied. As a particular case, it follows that the constants of the partial derivatives on a free algebra form a free subalgebra. The main result is also applied in order to provide a simplified proof of a previous result by the author on extensions of tensor rings.

We characterize norm closed subspaces $B$ of $\linf (\partial D)$ such that $C(\partial D) B \subset B$ and maximal ones in the family of proper closed subspaces $B$ of $L^\infty(\partial D)$ such that $A(D) B \subset B$, where $A(D)$ is the disk algebra. Analogously, we characterize closed subspaces of $H^\infty$ that are simultaneously invariant under $S$ and $S^\ast$, the forward and the backward shift operators, and maximal invariant subspaces of $H^\infty$.

With the help of some $p$-adic formal series over $p$-adic number fields and the estimates of character sums over Galois rings, we prove that there is a constant $C(n)$ such that there exists a primitive polynomial $f(x)\,{=}\,x^{n}-a_{1}x^{n-1}+\cdots +(-1)^{n}a_{n}$ of degree $n$ over $F_{q}$ with the first $m=\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor$ coefficients $a_{1},\ldots ,a_{m}$ prescribed in advance if $q\,{>}\,C(n)$.

In this paper we prove that if R is a Prüfer domain, then the R-module R⊕ R satisfies the radical formula.

If A is a semiprime Banach algebra, soc A, rad A the socle and radical of A, then Soc A ∩ rad A = (0). This elementary result enables us to prove some results concerning algebraic ideal and algebraic elements modulo the socle of A. We also deduce several conditions for A equivalent to the condition dim A <+∞.

Piochi in [10] gives a description of the least commutative congruence γ of an inverse semigroup in terms of congruence pairs and generalizes to inverse semigroups the notion of solvability. The object of this paper is to give an explicit construction of λ for simple regular ω-semigroups exploiting the work of Baird on congruences on such semigroups. Moreover the connection between the solvability classes of simple regular ω-semigroups and those of their subgroups is studied.

In § 2 a product of two modified Bessel Functions of the Second Kind is expressed as an integral with a function of the same type as a factor of the integrand. In § 3 an integral involving a product of these functions, regarded as functions of their orders, is evaluated in terms of another function of this kind. These results were suggested by a study of Mellin's inversion formula.

We consider a class of operators that contains the strictly singular operators and it is contained in the perturbation class of the upper semi-Fredholm operators PΦ+. We show that this class is strictly contained in PΦ+, solving a question of Friedman. We obtain similar results for the strictly cosingular operators and the perturbation class of the lower semi-Fredholm operators PΦ−. We also characterize in terms of PΦ+ and in terms of PΦ−. As a consequence, we show that and are the biggest operator ideals contained in PΦ+ and PΦ−, respectively.

We exhibit a large class K* of real 2 × 2 matrices of determinant ±1 such that, for nearly all A and B in K*, the group generated by A and B1 (the transpose of B) is the free product of the cyclic groups It is shown that K* contains all matrices of determinant ±1 with integer entries satisfying |b| > |a|, |c|, |d|. This gives a generalization of a theorem of Goldberg and Newman [2]. We also prove related results concerning the dominance of b and the discreteness of the free products .

the 2-class field tower of K. Thus K1 is the maximal abelian unramified extension of K of degree a power of 2; K2 is the maximal abelian unramified extension of K of degree a power of 2; etc. By class field theory the Galois group Ga1 (K1/K) ≅ Sk ≅ ℤ/2ℤ × ℤ/2ℤ, and in this case it is known that Ga(K2/Kl) is a cyclic group (cf. [3] and [10]). Then by class field theory the class number of K2 is odd, and hence K2 = K3 = K4 = …. We say that the 2-class field tower of K terminates at K1 if the class number of K1 is odd (and hence K1 = K2 = K3 = … ); otherwise we say that the 2-class field tower of K terminates at K2. Our goal in this paper is to determine how likely it is for the 2-class field tower of K to terminate at K1 and how likely it is for the 2-class field tower of K to terminate at K2. We shall consider separately the imaginary quadratic fields and the real quadratic fields.

Letu'=f\,(t,u) , u(0)=u_0 be an initial value problem with quasimonotone increasing right-hand side. We prove that if u,v are solutions such that u(t_0)\ll v(t_0) then there is a solution w withu(t_0)<w(t_0)<v(t_0) .

A theorem of Brady and Meier states that a right-angled Artin group is a duality group if and only if the flag complex of the defining graph is Cohen–Macaulay. We use this to give an example of a RAAG with the property that its outer automorphism group is not a virtual duality group. This gives a partial answer to a question of Vogtmann. In an appendix, Brück describes how he used a computer-assisted search to find further examples.

Free monoids play a central role in the theory of formal languages. Their endomorphisms appear naturally in the context of deterministic OL-schemes which trace their origin to biology. Closely related to such a scheme is a DOL-system which consists of a triple (X, φ, w) where X is a finite set, φ is an endomorphism of the free monoid X* and w ∈ X. The associated language is defined as the set {w, φw, φ2w,…} called a DOL-language. For a full discussion of this subject, we recommend the book [2] by Herman and Rozenberg.

In the theory of self-adjoint operators in Hilbert space and of formally self-adjoint linear differential equations there are many situations involving analytic functions on the complex plane whose singularities are confined to the real axis and where the growth of the function at such singular points is strictly limited.
