In his Habilitationsschrift [3] B. Fischer introduced the concept of a normally embedded subgroup of a finite group. A subgroup of a finite group G is said to be normally embedded in G if each of its Sylow subgroups is a Sylow subgroup of a normal subgroup of G. Meanwhile this concept has become of considerable importance in the theory of finite soluble groups and has been studied by various authors. However, in infinite group theory, normally embedded subgroups seem to have received little attention. The object of this note is to study normally embedded subgroups of locally soluble FC-groups.

In [4], R. P. Dilworth introduced the concept of a Noether lattice as an abstraction of the lattice of ideals of a Noetherian ring and he showed that many important properties of Noetherian rings, such as the Noether decomposition theorems, also hold for Noether lattices. It was later shown, in [1], that every Noether lattice is not the lattice of ideals of any Noetherian ring, yet many studies have successfully been undertaken to relate other concepts between Noetherian rings and Noether lattices as had been begun by Dilworth. (See [3], [5], and [6].) In this paper we undertake such a study and show that some results of M. Brodmann in [2] and L. Ratliff in [7] concerning prime divisors of large powers of a fixed element of a commutative Noetherian ring may be generalized and extended to the setting of a Noether lattice. It is shown (Theorem 2.8) that if A is an element of a Noether lattice then all large powers of A have the same prime divisors and (Corollary 3.8) included among this fixed set of primes are those primes that are prime divisors of the integral closure of Ak for some k≧l. We note that the ring proof of this latter result does not generalize directly since it uses the notion of transcendence degree which to our knowledge has no analogue in multiplicative lattices.

For the Kronecker algebra, Zwara found in [14] an example of a module whose orbit closure is neither unibranch nor Cohen-Macaulay. In this paper, we explain how to extend this example to all representation-infinite algebras with a preprojective component.

The development of the theory of absolute integrals derives from certain key facts. Among them are:

(I) An integral is a positive linear functional on a vector lattice, which is continuous in a certain sense.

(II) A function equal almost everywhere to a summable function is itself summable.

(III) Every measurable function is the pointwise limit of a sequence of elementary step functions.

A device that often plays an important role in measure theory, but which has not beenfully exploited in the theory of abstract integrals is that of

(IV) the smallest class containing a given class and having a certain property

(such as being a σ-ring of sets). It is our purpose in this paper to examine the theory of abstract real-valued absolute integrals axiomatically, in such a way as to isolate and clarify the roles of (I) through (IV).

Let Ω be a smooth bounded domain in RN, with N ≥ 5. We provide existence and bifurcation results for the elliptic fourth-order equation Δ2u − Δpu = f(λ, x, u) in Ω, under the Dirichlet boundary conditions u = 0 and ∇u = 0. Here λ is a positive real number, 1 < p ≤ 2# and f(.,., u) has a subcritical or a critical growth s, 1 < s ≤ 2*, where and . Our approach is variational, and it is based on the mountain-pass theorem, the Ekeland variational principle and the concentration-compactness principle.

An element a in a ring R is left annihilator-stable (or left AS) if, whenever $Ra+{\rm l}(b)=R$ with $b\in R$ , $a-u\in {\rm l}(b)$ for a unit u in R, and the ring R is a left AS ring if each of its elements is left AS. In this paper, we show that the left AS elements in a ring form a multiplicatively closed set, giving an affirmative answer to a question of Nicholson [J. Pure Appl. Alg.221 (2017), 2557–2572.]. This result is used to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a formal triangular matrix ring to be left AS. As an application, we provide examples of left AS rings R over which the triangular matrix rings ${\mathbb T}_n(R)$ are not left AS for all $n\ge 2$ . These examples give a negative answer to another question of Nicholson [J. Pure Appl. Alg.221 (2017), 2557–2572.] whether R/J(R) being left AS implies that R is left AS.

We give an algebraic proof of a class number formula for dihedral extensions of number fields of degree 2q, where q is any odd integer. Our formula expresses the ratio of class numbers as a ratio of orders of cohomology groups of units and allows one to recover similar formulas which have appeared in the literature. As a corollary of our main result, we obtain explicit bounds on the (finitely many) possible values which can occur as ratio of class numbers in dihedral extensions. Such bounds are obtained by arithmetic means, without resorting to deep integral representation theory.

For a locally compact Hausdorff space X and a C*-algebra A with only finitely many closed ideals, we discuss a characterization of closed ideals of C0(X,A) in terms of closed ideals of A and a class of closed subspaces of X. We further use this result to prove that a closed ideal of C0(X)⊗minA is a finite sum of product ideals. We also establish that for a unital C*-algebra A, C0(X,A) has the centre-quotient property if and only if A has the centre-quotient property. As an application, we characterize the closed Lie ideals of C0(X,A) and identify all the closed Lie ideals of HC0(X)⊗minB(H), H being a separable Hilbert space.

We introduce a refined version of group cohomology and relate it to the space of polynomials on the group in question. We show that the polynomial cohomology with trivial coefficients admits a description in terms of ordinary cohomology with polynomial coefficients, and that the degree one polynomial cohomology with trivial coefficients admits a description directly in terms of polynomials. Lastly, we give a complete description of the polynomials on a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group by showing that these are exactly the maps that pull back to classical polynomials via the exponential map.

Let $p$ be a prime number, $\Q_p$ the field of $p$-adic numbers, $K$ a finite field extension of $\Q_p$, $\skew4\bar K$ a fixed algebraic closure of $K$, and $\C_p$ the completion of $\skew4\bar K$ with respect to the $p$-adic valuation. We discuss some properties of Lipschitzian elements, which are elements $T$ of $\C_p$ defined by a certain metric condition that allows one to integrate Lipschitzian functions along the Galois orbit of $T$ over $K$ with respect to the Haar distribution.

If A is a semiprime Banach algebra, soc A, rad A the socle and radical of A, then Soc A ∩ rad A = (0). This elementary result enables us to prove some results concerning algebraic ideal and algebraic elements modulo the socle of A. We also deduce several conditions for A equivalent to the condition dim A <+∞.

Let f: (ℝn, 0)→ (ℝ,0) be a germ of a real analytic function. Let L and F(f) denote the link of f and the Milnor fibre of fc respectively, i. e., L = {x ∈ Sn−1 | f(x) = 0}, , where 0 ≤ ξ ≪ r ≪ 1, . In [2] Szafraniec introduced the notion of an -germ as a generalization of a germ defined by a weighted homogeneous polynomial satisfying some condition concerning the relation between its degree and weights (definition 1). He also proved that if f is an -germ (presumably with nonisolated singularity) then the number χ(F(f)/d mod 2 is a topological invariant of f, where χ(F(f)) is the Euler characterististic of F(f), and gave the formula for χ(L)/2 mod 2 (it is a well-known fact that F(L) is an even number). As a simple consequence he got the fact that χ(F(f)mod 2 is a topological invariant for any f, which is a generalization of Wall's result [3] (he considered only germs with an isolated singularity).

An element k of a unital Banach algebra A is said to be Hermitian if its numerical range

is contained in ℝ; equivalently, ∥eitk∥ = 1(t ∈ ℝ)—see Bonsall and Duncan [3] and [4]. Here we find the largest possible extent of V(kn), n ∈ ℕ, given V(k) ⊆ [−1, 1], and so ∥k∥ ≤ 1: previous knowledge is in Bollobás [2] and Crabb, Duncan and McGregor [7]. The largest possible sets all occur in a single example. Surprisingly, they all have straight line segments in their boundaries. The example is in [2] and [7], but here we give A. Browder's construction from [5], partly published in [6]. We are grateful to him for a copy of [5], and for discussions which led to the present work. We are also grateful to J. Free monoids play a central role in the theory of formal languages. Their endomorphisms appear naturally in the context of deterministic OL-schemes which trace their origin to biology. Closely related to such a scheme is a DOL-system which consists of a triple (X, φ, w) where X is a finite set, φ is an endomorphism of the free monoid X* and w ∈ X. The associated language is defined as the set {w, φw, φ2w,…} called a DOL-language. For a full discussion of this subject, we recommend the book [2] by Herman and Rozenberg.

This paper proves the existence of potentials of the first and second kind of a Frobenius like structure in a frame, which encompasses families of arrangements. The frame uses the notion of matroids. For the proof of the existence of the potentials, a power series ansatz is made. The proof that it works requires that certain decompositions of tuples of coordinate vector fields are related by certain elementary transformations. This is shown with a nontrivial result on matroid partition.

In [2], H. Delange gives the following characterization of the sine function.

Theorem A. f(x)=sin x is the only infinitely differentiable real-valued function on the real line such that f'(O)= 1 and

for all real x and n = 0,1,2,….

It is clear that, if f satisfies (1), then the analytic continuation of f is an entire function satisfying

for all z in the complex plane. Hence f is of at most order one and type one. In this note, we prove the following theorem.

We calculate the moments of the characteristic polynomials of $N\times N$ matrices drawn from the Hermitian ensembles of Random Matrix Theory, at a position t in the bulk of the spectrum, as a series expansion in powers of t. We focus in particular on the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. We employ a novel approach to calculate the coefficients in this series expansion of the moments, appropriately scaled. These coefficients are polynomials in N. They therefore grow as $N\to\infty$ , meaning that in this limit the radius of convergence of the series expansion tends to zero. This is related to oscillations as t varies that are increasingly rapid as N grows. We show that the $N\to\infty$ asymptotics of the moments can be derived from this expansion when $t=0$ . When $t\ne 0$ we observe a surprising cancellation when the expansion coefficients for N and $N+1$ are formally averaged: this procedure removes all of the N-dependent terms leading to values that coincide with those expected on the basis of previously established asymptotic formulae for the moments. We obtain as well formulae for the expectation values of products of the secular coefficients.

A long-standing problem is the characterization of subsets of the range of a vector measure. It is known that the range of a countably additive vector measure is relatively weakly compact and, in addition, possesses several interesting properties (see [2]). In [6] it is proved that if m: Σ → Χ is a countably additive vector measure, then the range of m has not only the Banach–Saks property, but even the alternate Banach-Saks property. A tantalizing conjecture, which we shall disprove in this article, is that the range of m has to have, for some p > 1, the p-Banach–Saks property. Another conjecture, which has been around for some time (see [2]) and is also disproved in this paper, is that weakly null sequences in the range of a vector measure admit weakly-2-summable sub-sequences. In fact, we shall show a weakly null sequence in the range of a countably additive vector measure having, for every p < ∞, no weakly-p-summable sub-sequences.

It is conjectured that the central quotient of any irreducible Artin–Tits group is either virtually cyclic or acylindrically hyperbolic. We prove this conjecture for Artin–Tits groups that are known to be CAT(0) groups by a result of Brady and McCammond, that is, Artin–Tits groups associated with graphs having no 3-cycles and Artin–Tits groups of almost large type associated with graphs admitting appropriate directions. In particular, the latter family contains Artin–Tits groups of large type associated with cones over square-free bipartite graphs.
