Over 50 years ago, Erdős and Gallai conjectured that the edges of every graph on n vertices can be decomposed into O(n) cycles and edges. Among other results, Conlon, Fox and Sudakov recently proved that this holds for the random graph G(n, p) with probability approaching 1 as n → ∞. In this paper we show that for most edge probabilities G(n, p) can be decomposed into a union of n/4 + np/2 + o(n) cycles and edges w.h.p. This result is asymptotically tight.

The Erdős–Simonovits stability theorem states that for all ε > 0 there exists α > 0 such that if G is a Kr+1-free graph on n vertices with e(G) > ex(n, Kr+1)– α n2, then one can remove εn2 edges from G to obtain an r-partite graph. Füredi gave a short proof that one can choose α = ε. We give a bound for the relationship of α and ε which is asymptotically sharp as ε → 0.

Let G be an abelian group of cardinality n, where hcf(n, 6) = 1, and let A be a random subset of G. Form a graph ΓA on vertex set G by joining x to y if and only if x + y ∈ A. Then, with high probability as n → ∞, the chromatic number χ(ΓA) is at most $(1 + o(1))\tfrac{n}{2\log_2 n}$. This is asymptotically sharp when G = ℤ/nℤ, n prime.

For fixed integers p and q, let f(n,p,q) denote the minimum number of colours needed to colour all of the edges of the complete graph Kn such that no clique of p vertices spans fewer than q distinct colours. Any edge-colouring with this property is known as a (p,q)-colouring. We construct an explicit (5,5)-colouring that shows that f(n,5,5) ≤ n1/3 + o(1) as n → ∞. This improves upon the best known probabilistic upper bound of O(n1/2) given by Erdős and Gyárfás, and comes close to matching the best known lower bound Ω(n1/3).

Let hom(G) denote the size of the largest clique or independent set of a graph G. In 2007, Bukh and Sudakov proved that every n-vertex graph G with hom(G) = O(logn) contains an induced subgraph with Ω(n1/2) distinct degrees, and raised the question of deciding whether an analogous result holds for every n-vertex graph G with hom(G) = O(nϵ), where ϵ > 0 is a fixed constant. Here, we answer their question in the affirmative and show that every graph G on n vertices contains an induced subgraph with Ω((n/hom(G))1/2) distinct degrees. We also prove a stronger result for graphs with large cliques or independent sets and show, for any fixed k ∈ ℕ, that if an n-vertex graph G contains no induced subgraph with k distinct degrees, then hom(G)⩾n/(k − 1) − o(n); this bound is essentially best possible.

We obtain a first non-trivial estimate for the sum of dilates problem in the case of groups of prime order, by showing that if t is an integer different from 0, 1 or −1 and if ⊂ ℤ/pℤ is not too large (with respect to p), then | + t ⋅ | is significantly larger than 2|| (unless |t| = 3). In the important case |t| = 2, we obtain for instance | + t ⋅ | ≥ 2.08 ||−2.

A family of sets (and the corresponding family of 0–1 vectors) is called t-cancellative if, for all distinct t + 2 members A1,. . ., At and B, C ∈ , Let ct(n) be the size of the largest t-cancellative family on n elements, and let ct(n, r) denote the largest r-uniform family. We improve the previous upper bounds, e.g., we show c2(n) ≤ 20.322n (for n > n0). Using an algebraic construction we show that c2(n, 2k) = Θ(nk) for each k when n → ∞.

The interlace polynomials introduced by Arratia, Bollobás and Sorkin extend to invariants of graphs with vertex weights, and these weighted interlace polynomials have several novel properties. One novel property is a version of the fundamental three-term formula that lacks the last term. It follows that interlace polynomial computations can be represented by binary trees rather than mixed binary–ternary trees. Binary computation trees provide a description of q(G) that is analogous to the activities description of the Tutte polynomial. If G is a tree or forest then these ‘algorithmic activities’ are associated with a certain kind of independent set in G. Three other novel properties are weighted pendant-twin reductions, which involve removing certain kinds of vertices from a graph and adjusting the weights of the remaining vertices in such a way that the interlace polynomials are unchanged. These reductions allow for smaller computation trees as they eliminate some branches. If a graph can be completely analysed using pendant-twin reductions, then its interlace polynomial can be calculated in polynomial time. An intuitively pleasing property is that graphs which can be constructed through graph substitutions have vertex-weighted interlace polynomials which can be obtained through algebraic substitutions.

For a directed graph G without loops or parallel edges, let β(G) denote the size of the smallest feedback arc set, i.e., the smallest subset X ⊂ E(G) such that G ∖ X has no directed cycles. Let γ(G) be the number of unordered pairs of vertices of G which are not adjacent. We prove that every directed graph whose shortest directed cycle has length at least r ≥ 4 satisfies β(G) ≤ cγ(G)/r2, where c is an absolute constant. This is tight up to the constant factor and extends a result of Chudnovsky, Seymour and Sullivan.

This result can also be used to answer a question of Yuster concerning almost given length cycles in digraphs. We show that for any fixed 0 < θ < 1/2 and sufficiently large n, if G is a digraph with n vertices and β(G) ≥ θn2, then for any 0 ≤ m ≤ θn − o(n) it contains a directed cycle whose length is between m and m + 6θ−1/2. Moreover, there is a constant C such that either G contains directed cycles of every length between C and θn − o(n) or it is close to a digraph G′ with a simple structure: every strong component of G′ is periodic. These results are also tight up to the constant factors.

The study of the phase transition of random graph processes, and recently in particular Achlioptas processes, has attracted much attention. Achlioptas, D'Souza and Spencer (Science, 2009) gave strong numerical evidence that a variety of edge-selection rules in Achlioptas processes exhibit a discontinuous phase transition. However, Riordan and Warnke (Science, 2011) recently showed that all these processes have a continuous phase transition.

In this work we prove discontinuous phase transitions for three random graph processes: all three start with the empty graph on n vertices and, depending on the process, we connect in every step (i) one vertex chosen randomly from all vertices and one chosen randomly from a restricted set of vertices, (ii) two components chosen randomly from the set of all components, or (iii) a randomly chosen vertex and a randomly chosen component.

Let Γ =(V,E) be a point-symmetric reflexive relation and let υ ∈ V such that |Γ(υ)| is finite (and hence |Γ(x)| is finite for all x, by the transitive action of the group of automorphisms). Let j ∈ℕ be an integer such that Γj(υ)∩ Γ−(υ)={υ}. Our main result states that

As an application we have |Γj(υ)| ≥ 1+(|Γ(υ)|−1)j. The last result confirms a recent conjecture of Seymour in the case of vertex-symmetric graphs. Also it gives a short proof for the validity of the Caccetta–Häggkvist conjecture for vertex-symmetric graphs and generalizes an additive result of Shepherdson.

Let be a sequence of real numbers satisfying for each k ≥ 0, where M ≥ 1 is a fixed number. We prove that, for any sequence of real numbers , there is a real number ξ such that for each k ≥ 0. Here, denotes the distance from to the nearest integer. This is a corollary derived from our main theorem, which is a more general matrix version of this statement with explicit constants.

Let G be a simple graph that is properly edge-coloured with m colours and let \[\mathcal{M} = \{ {M_1},...,{M_m}\} \] be the set of m matchings induced by the colours in G. Suppose that \[m \leqslant n - {n^c}\], where \[c > 9/10\], and every matching in \[\mathcal{M}\] has size n. Then G contains a full rainbow matching, i.e. a matching that contains exactly one edge from Mi for each \[1 \leqslant i \leqslant m\]. This answers an open problem of Pokrovskiy and gives an affirmative answer to a generalization of a special case of a conjecture of Aharoni and Berger. Related results are also found for multigraphs with edges of bounded multiplicity, and for hypergraphs.

Finally, we provide counterexamples to several conjectures on full rainbow matchings made by Aharoni and Berger.

Compound Poisson population models are particular conditional branching process models. A formula for the transition probabilities of the backward process for general compound Poisson models is verified. Symmetric compound Poisson models are defined in terms of a parameter θ ∈ (0, ∞) and a power series φ with positive radius r of convergence. It is shown that the asymptotic behaviour of symmetric compound Poisson models is mainly determined by the characteristic value θrφ′(r−). If θrφ′(r−)≥1, then the model is in the domain of attraction of the Kingman coalescent. If θrφ′(r−) < 1, then under mild regularity conditions a condensation phenomenon occurs which forces the model to be in the domain of attraction of a discrete-time Dirac coalescent. The proofs are partly based on the analytic saddle point method. They draw heavily from local limit theorems and from results of S. Janson on simply generated trees, conditioned Galton-Watson trees, random allocations and condensation. Several examples of compound Poisson models are provided and analysed.

Bollobás and Riordan introduce a Tutte polynomial for coloured graphs and matroids in [3]. We observe that this polynomial has an expansion as a sum indexed by the subsets of the ground-set of a coloured matroid, generalizing the subset expansion of the Tutte polynomial. We also discuss similar expansions of other contraction–deletion invariants of graphs and matroids.

Let k ⩾ 2 be an integer. We show that if s = 2 and t ⩾ 2, or s = t = 3, then the maximum possible number of edges in a C2k+1-free graph containing no induced copy of Ks,t is asymptotically equal to (t − s + 1)1/s(n/2)2−1/s except when k = s = t = 2.

This strengthens a result of Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte [1], and answers a question of Loh, Tait, Timmons and Zhou [14].

We prove the following 30 year-old conjecture of Győri and Tuza: the edges of every n-vertex graph G can be decomposed into complete graphs C1,. . .,Cℓ of orders two and three such that |C1|+···+|Cℓ| ≤ (1/2+o(1))n2. This result implies the asymptotic version of the old result of Erdős, Goodman and Pósa that asserts the existence of such a decomposition with ℓ ≤ n2/4.

Polyhedral embeddings of cubic graphs by means of certain operations are studied. It is proved that some known families of snarks have no (orientable) polyhedral embeddings. This result supports a conjecture of Grünbaum that no snark admits an orientable polyhedral embedding. This conjecture is verified by computer for all snarks having fewer than 30 vertices. On the other hand, for every non-orientable surface $S$, there exists a non-3-edge-colourable graph which polyhedrally embeds in $S$.

In 1978, Dhar suggested a model of a lattice gas whose states are partial orders. In this context he raised the question of determining the number of partial orders with a fixed number of comparable pairs. Dhar conjectured that in order to find a good approximation to this number, it should suffice to enumerate families of layer posets. In this paper we prove this conjecture and thereby prepare the ground for a complete answer to the question.

Let $P(n)$ and $C(n)$ denote, respectively, the maximum possible numbers of Hamiltonian paths and Hamiltonian cycles in a tournament on n vertices. The study of $P(n)$ was suggested by Szele [14], who showed in an early application of the probabilistic method that $P(n) \geq n!2^{-n+1}$, and conjectured that $\lim ( {P(n)}/ {n!} )^{1/n}= 1/2.$ This was proved by Alon [2], who observed that the conjecture follows from a suitable bound on $C(n)$, and showed $C(n) <O(n^{3/2}(n-1)!2^{-n}).$ Here we improve this to $C(n)<O\big(n^{3/2-\xi}(n-1)!2^{-n}\big),$ with $\xi = 0.2507$… Our approach is mainly based on entropy considerations.
