Let a, b and n be integers with 2[les ]a[les ]b and n[ges ]a+b. Suppose that [Ascr ]⊂([n]a) and [Bscr ]⊂([n]b) are nontrivial cross-intersecting families. Then [mid ][Ascr ][mid ]+[mid ][Bscr ][mid ][les ]2+(nb) −2(n−ab)+ (n−2ab). This result is best possible.

Assemblies are decomposable combinatorial objects characterized by a sequence mi that counts the number of possible components of size i. Permutations on n elements, mappings from a set containing n elements into itself, 2-regular graphs on n vertices, and set partitions on a set of size n are all assemblies with natural decompositions. Logarithmic assemblies are characterized by constants θ > 0 and κ0 > 0 such that miκi0/ (i−1)! → θ. Random mappings, permutations and 2-regular graphs are all logarithmic assemblies, but set partitions are not.

Given a logarithmic assembly, all representatives having total size n are chosen uniformly and a component counting process C(n) = (C1(n), C2(n), …, Cn(n)) is defined, where Ci(n) is the number of components of size i. Our results also apply to C(n) distributed as the Ewens sampling formula with parameter θ. Denote the component counting process up to size at most b by Cb(n) = (C1(n), C2(n), …, Cb(n)). It is natural to approximate Cb by Zb = (Z1, Z2, …, Zb), the b-dimensional process of independent Poisson variables Zi for which the ith variable has expectation [ ]Zi = miκi0 exp((1−θ)i/n)/i!. We find asymptotics for the total variation distance between Cb(n) and Zb.

Polyhedral embeddings of cubic graphs by means of certain operations are studied. It is proved that some known families of snarks have no (orientable) polyhedral embeddings. This result supports a conjecture of Grünbaum that no snark admits an orientable polyhedral embedding. This conjecture is verified by computer for all snarks having fewer than 30 vertices. On the other hand, for every non-orientable surface $S$, there exists a non-3-edge-colourable graph which polyhedrally embeds in $S$.

We prove the following 30 year-old conjecture of Győri and Tuza: the edges of every n-vertex graph G can be decomposed into complete graphs C1,. . .,Cℓ of orders two and three such that |C1|+···+|Cℓ| ≤ (1/2+o(1))n2. This result implies the asymptotic version of the old result of Erdős, Goodman and Pósa that asserts the existence of such a decomposition with ℓ ≤ n2/4.

Let k ⩾ 2 be an integer. We show that if s = 2 and t ⩾ 2, or s = t = 3, then the maximum possible number of edges in a C2k+1-free graph containing no induced copy of Ks,t is asymptotically equal to (t − s + 1)1/s(n/2)2−1/s except when k = s = t = 2.

This strengthens a result of Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte [1], and answers a question of Loh, Tait, Timmons and Zhou [14].

Bollobás and Riordan introduce a Tutte polynomial for coloured graphs and matroids in [3]. We observe that this polynomial has an expansion as a sum indexed by the subsets of the ground-set of a coloured matroid, generalizing the subset expansion of the Tutte polynomial. We also discuss similar expansions of other contraction–deletion invariants of graphs and matroids.

We prove that there is a set F in the plane so that the distance between any two points of F is at least 1, and for any positive ϵ < 1, and every line segment in the plane of length at least ϵ−1−o(1), there is a point of F within distance ϵ of the segment. This is tight up to the o(1)-term in the exponent, improving earlier estimates of Peres, of Solomon and Weiss, and of Adiceam.

A widely studied model for generating binary sequences is to ‘evolve’ them on a tree according to a symmetric Markov process. We show that under this model distinguishing the true (model) tree from a false one is substantially ‘easier’ (in terms of the sequence length needed) than determining the true tree. The key tool is a new and near-tight Ramsey-type result for binary trees.

Let G be an additive abelian group, let n ⩾ 1 be an integer, let S be a sequence over G of length |S| ⩾ n + 1, and let ${\mathsf h}$(S) denote the maximum multiplicity of a term in S. Let Σn(S) denote the set consisting of all elements in G which can be expressed as the sum of terms from a subsequence of S having length n. In this paper, we prove that either ng ∈ Σn(S) for every term g in S whose multiplicity is at least ${\mathsf h}$(S) − 1 or |Σn(S)| ⩾ min{n + 1, |S| − n + | supp (S)| − 1}, where |supp(S)| denotes the number of distinct terms that occur in S. When G is finite cyclic and n = |G|, this confirms a conjecture of Y. O. Hamidoune from 2003.

In this work we show that that many of the basic results concerning the theory of the characteristic polynomial of a graph can be derived as easy consequences of a determinantal identity due to Jacobi. As well as improving known results, we are also able to derive a number of new ones. A combinatorial interpretation of the Christoffel-Darboux identity from the theory of orthogonal polynomials is also presented. Finally, we extend some work of Tutte on the reconstructibility of graphs with irreducible characteristic polynomials.

We study and classify proper q-colourings of the ℤd lattice, identifying three regimes where different combinatorial behaviour holds. (1) When $q\le d+1$ , there exist frozen colourings, that is, proper q-colourings of ℤd which cannot be modified on any finite subset. (2) We prove a strong list-colouring property which implies that, when $q\ge d+2$ , any proper q-colouring of the boundary of a box of side length $n \ge d+2$ can be extended to a proper q-colouring of the entire box. (3) When $q\geq 2d+1$ , the latter holds for any $n \ge 1$ . Consequently, we classify the space of proper q-colourings of the ℤd lattice by their mixing properties.

Given a subset $S$ of an abelian group $G$ and an integer $k\geq 1$, the $k$-deck of $S$ is the function that assigns to every $T\subseteq G$ with at most $k$ elements the number of elements $g\in G$ with $g+T\subseteq S$. The reconstruction problem for an abelian group $G$ asks for the minimal value of $k$ such that every subset $S$ of $G$ is determined, up to translation, by its $k$-deck. This minimal value is the set-reconstruction number$r_{\rm set}(G)$ of $G$; the corresponding value for multisets is the reconstruction number$r(G)$.

Previous work had given bounds for the set-reconstruction number of cyclic groups: Alon, Caro, Krasikov and Roditty [1] showed that $r_{\rm set}({\mathbb{Z}}_n)<\log_2n$ and Radcliffe and Scott [15] that $r_{\rm set}({\mathbb{Z}}_n)<9\frac{\ln n}{\ln\ln n}$. We give a precise evaluation of $r(G)$ for all abelian groups $G$ and deduce that $r_{\rm set}({\mathbb{Z}}_n)\leq 6$.

We prove a number of results related to a problem of Po-Shen Loh [9], which is equivalent to a problem in Ramsey theory. Let a = (a1, a2, a3) and b = (b1, b2, b3) be two triples of integers. Define a to be 2-less than b if ai < bi for at least two values of i, and define a sequence a1, …, am of triples to be 2-increasing if ar is 2-less than as whenever r < s. Loh asks how long a 2-increasing sequence can be if all the triples take values in {1, 2, …, n}, and gives a log* improvement over the trivial upper bound of n2 by using the triangle removal lemma. In the other direction, a simple construction gives a lower bound of n3/2. We look at this problem and a collection of generalizations, improving some of the known bounds, pointing out connections to other well-known problems in extremal combinatorics, and asking a number of further questions.

The present paper deals with two graph parameters related to cover graphs and acyclic orientations of graphs.

The parameter $c(G)$ of a graph $G$, introduced by B. Bollobás, G. Brightwell and J. Nešetřil [Order3 245–255], is defined as the minimum number of edges one needs to delete from $G$ in order to obtain a cover graph. Extending their results, we prove that, for $\delta >0$, $(1-\delta) \frac{1}{l} \frac{n^2p}{2} \leq c({\mathcal G}_{n,p}) \leq (1+\delta) \frac{1}{l} \frac{n^2p}{2}$ asymptotically almost surely as long as $C n^{-1 + \frac{1}{l}} \leq p(n) \leq c n^{-1 + \frac{1}{ l-1} }$ for some positive constants $c$ and $C$. Here, as usual, ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$ is the random graph.

Given an acyclic orientation of a graph $G$, an arc is called dependent if its reversal creates an oriented cycle. Let $d_{\min}(G)$ be the minimum number of dependent arcs in any acyclic orientation of $G$. We determine the supremum, denoted by $r_{\chi,g}$, of $d_{\min}(G)/e(G)$ in the class of graphs $G$ with chromatic number $\chi$ and girth $g$. Namely, we show that $r_{\chi,g} = {(\scriptsize\begin{array}{@{}c@{}}{\chi}-g+2\\ 2\end{array})} / {(\scriptsize\begin{array}{@{}c@{}}{\chi}\\ 2\end{array})}$. This extends results of D. C. Fisher, K. Fraughnaugh, L. Langley and D. B. West [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B71 73–78].

We consider several extremal problems concerning representations of graphs as distance graphs on the integers. Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, we wish to find an injective function $\phi:V\to{\mathbb Z}^+=\{1,2,\dots\}$ and a set ${\mathcal D}\subset{\mathbb Z}^+$ such that $\{u,v\}\in E$ if and only if $|\phi(u)-\phi(v)|\in{\mathcal D}$.

Let $s(n)$ be the smallest $N$ such that any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices admits a representation $(\phi_G,{\mathcal D}_G)$ such that $\phi_G(v)\leq N$ for all $v\in V(G)$. We show that $s(n)=(1+o(1))n^2$ as $n\to\infty$. In fact, if we let $s_r(n)$ be the smallest $N$ such that any $r$-regular graph $G$ on $n$ vertices admits a representation $(\phi_G,{\mathcal D}_G)$ such that $\phi_G(v)\leq N$ for all $v\in V(G)$, then $s_r(n)=(1+o(1))n^2$ as $n\to\infty$ for any $r=r(n)\gg\log n$ with $rn$ even for all $n$.

Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, let $D_{\rm e}(G)$ be the smallest possible cardinality of a set ${\mathcal D}$ for which there is some $\phi\:V\to{\mathbb Z}^+$ so that $(\phi,{\mathcal D})$ represents $G$. We show that, for almost all $n$-vertex graphs $G$, we have \begin{equation*} D_{\rm e}(G)\geq\frac{1}{2}\binom{n}{2}-(1+o(1))n^{3/2}(\log n)^{1/2}, \end{equation*} whereas for some $n$-vertex graph $G$, we have \begin{equation*} D_{\rm e}(G)\geq\binom{n}{2}-n^{3/2}(\log n)^{1/2+o(1)}.\end{equation*} Further extremal problems of similar nature are considered.

Let f(n, k, l) be the expected length of a longest common subsequence of l sequences of length n over an alphabet of size k. It is known that there are constants γ(l)k such that f(n, k, l)→ γ(l)kn as n→∞, and we show that γ(l)k= Θ(k1/l−1) as k→∞. Bounds for the corresponding constants for the expected length of a shortest common supersequence are also presented.

Let $T$ denote a real function defined on random subsets of a given family of finite sets. The random variable $T$ is decomposed into the sum of the linear, the quadratic, the cubic etc. parts which are mutually uncorrelated. Applications of this decomposition to the asymptotics of the probability distribution of $T$ (as the sizes of random subsets and of finite sets increase) are discussed.

A graph $H$ is common if the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ in a 2-edge-colouring of the complete graph $K_n$ is asymptotically minimised by the random colouring. Burr and Rosta, extending a famous conjecture of Erdős, conjectured that every graph is common. The conjectures of Erdős and of Burr and Rosta were disproved by Thomason and by Sidorenko, respectively, in the late 1980s. Collecting new examples of common graphs had not seen much progress since then, although very recently a few more graphs were verified to be common by the flag algebra method or the recent progress on Sidorenko’s conjecture. Our contribution here is to provide several new classes of tripartite common graphs. The first example is the class of so-called triangle trees, which generalises two theorems by Sidorenko and answers a question of Jagger, Šťovíček, and Thomason from 1996. We also prove that, somewhat surprisingly, given any tree $T$ , there exists a triangle tree such that the graph obtained by adding $T$ as a pendant tree is still common. Furthermore, we show that adding arbitrarily many apex vertices to any connected bipartite graph on at most $5$ vertices yields a common graph.

A k-uniform tight cycle $C_s^k$ is a hypergraph on s > k vertices with a cyclic ordering such that every k consecutive vertices under this ordering form an edge. The pair (k, s) is admissible if gcd (k, s) = 1 or k / gcd (k,s) is even. We prove that if $s \ge 2{k^2}$ and H is a k-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least (1/2 + o(1))|V(H)|, then every vertex is covered by a copy of $C_s^k$. The bound is asymptotically sharp if (k, s) is admissible. Our main tool allows us to arbitrarily rearrange the order in which a tight path wraps around a complete k-partite k-uniform hypergraph, which may be of independent interest.

For hypergraphs F and H, a perfect F-tiling in H is a spanning collection of vertex-disjoint copies of F. For $k \ge 3$, there are currently only a handful of known F-tiling results when F is k-uniform but not k-partite. If s ≢ 0 mod k, then $C_s^k$ is not k-partite. Here we prove an F-tiling result for a family of non-k-partite k-uniform hypergraphs F. Namely, for $s \ge 5{k^2}$, every k-uniform hypergraph H with minimum codegree at least (1/2 + 1/(2s) + o(1))|V(H)| has a perfect $C_s^k$-tiling. Moreover, the bound is asymptotically sharp if k is even and (k, s) is admissible.

A set S of permutations is forcing if for any sequence $\{\Pi_i\}_{i \in \mathbb{N}}$ of permutations where the density $d(\pi,\Pi_i)$ converges to $\frac{1}{|\pi|!}$ for every permutation $\pi \in S$ , it holds that $\{\Pi_i\}_{i \in \mathbb{N}}$ is quasirandom. Graham asked whether there exists an integer k such that the set of all permutations of order k is forcing; this has been shown to be true for any $k\ge 4$ . In particular, the set of all 24 permutations of order 4 is forcing. We provide the first non-trivial lower bound on the size of a forcing set of permutations: every forcing set of permutations (with arbitrary orders) contains at least four permutations.
