An [n, k, r]-partite graph is a graph whose vertex set, V, can be partitioned into n pairwise-disjoint independent sets, V1, …, Vn, each containing exactly k vertices, and the subgraph induced by Vi ∪ Vj contains exactly r independent edges, for 1 [les ] i < j [les ] n. An independent transversal in an [n, k, r]-partite graph is an independent set, T, consisting of n vertices, one from each Vi. An independent covering is a set of k pairwise-disjoint independent transversals. Let t(k, r) denote the maximal n for which every [n, k, r]-partite graph contains an independent transversal. Let c(k, r) be the maximal n for which every [n, k, r]-partite graph contains an independent covering. We give upper and lower bounds for these parameters. Furthermore, our bounds are constructive. These results improve and generalize previous results of Erdo″s, Gyárfás and Łuczak [5], for the case of graphs.

For every n consider a subset Hn of the patterns of length n over a fixed finite alphabet. The limit distribution of the waiting time until each element of Hn appears in an infinite sequence of independent, uniformly distributed random letters was determined in an earlier paper. This time we prove that these waiting times are getting independent as n → ∞. Our result is used for applying the converse part of the Borel–Cantelli lemma to problems connected with such waiting times, yielding thus improvements on some known theorems.

The size-Ramsey number of a graph F is the smallest number of edges in a graph G with the Ramsey property for F, that is, with the property that any 2-colouring of the edges of G contains a monochromatic copy of F. We prove that the size-Ramsey number of the grid graph on n × n vertices is bounded from above by n3+o(1).

We suggest two related conjectures dealing with the existence of spanning irregular subgraphs of graphs. The first asserts that any $d$ -regular graph on $n$ vertices contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree between $0$ and $d$ deviates from $\frac{n}{d+1}$ by at most $2$ . The second is that every graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $\delta$ contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree does not exceed $\frac{n}{\delta +1}+2$ . Both conjectures remain open, but we prove several asymptotic relaxations for graphs with a large number of vertices $n$ . In particular we show that if $d^3 \log n \leq o(n)$ then every $d$ -regular graph with $n$ vertices contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree between $0$ and $d$ is $(1+o(1))\frac{n}{d+1}$ . We also prove that any graph with $n$ vertices and minimum degree $\delta$ contains a spanning subgraph in which no degree is repeated more than $(1+o(1))\frac{n}{\delta +1}+2$ times.

We give an asymptotic formula for the minimum number of edges contained in triangles among graphs with n vertices and e edges. Our main tool is a generalization of Zykov's symmetrization method that can be applied to several graphs simultaneously.

A function f: 2n → {0,1} is odd-cycle-free if there are no x1,. . .,xk ∈ 2n with k an odd integer such that f(x1) = ··· = f(xk) = 1 and x1 + ··· + xk = 0. We show that one can distinguish odd-cycle-free functions from those ε-far from being odd-cycle-free by making poly(1/ε) queries to an evaluation oracle. We give two proofs of this result, each shedding light on a different connection between testability of properties of Boolean functions and of dense graphs.

The first issue we study is directly reducing testing of linear-invariant properties of Boolean functions to testing associated graph properties. We show a black-box reduction from testing odd-cycle-freeness to testing bipartiteness of graphs. Such reductions have already been shown (Král’, Serra and Vena, and Shapira) for monotone linear-invariant properties defined by forbidding solutions to a finite number of equations. But for odd-cycle-freeness whose description involves an infinite number of forbidden equations, a reduction to graph property testing was not previously known. If one could show such a reduction more generally for any linear-invariant property closed under restrictions to subspaces, then it would likely lead to a characterization of the one-sided testable linear-invariant properties, an open problem raised by Sudan.

The second issue we study is whether there is an efficient canonical tester for linear-invariant properties of Boolean functions. A canonical tester for linear-invariant properties operates by picking a random linear subspace and then checking whether the restriction of the input function to the subspace satisfies a fixed property. The question is if, for every linear-invariant property, there is a canonical tester for which there is only a polynomial blow-up from the optimal query complexity. We answer the question affirmatively for odd-cycle-freeness. The general question remains open.

In this paper, we consider pairs of forbidden subgraphs that imply the existence of a 2-factor in a graph. For d ≥ 2, let d be the set of connected graphs of minimum degree at least d. Let F1 and F2 be connected graphs and let be a set of connected graphs. Then {F1, F2} is said to be a forbidden pair for if every {F1, F2}-free graph in of sufficiently large order has a 2-factor. Faudree, Faudree and Ryjáček have characterized all the forbidden pairs for the set of 2-connected graphs. We first characterize the forbidden pairs for 2, which is a larger set than the set of 2-connected graphs, and observe a sharp difference between the characterized pairs and those obtained by Faudree, Faudree and Ryjáček. We then consider the forbidden pairs for connected graphs of large minimum degree. We prove that if {F1, F2} is a forbidden pair for d, then either F1 or F2 is a star of order at most d + 2. Ota and Tokuda have proved that every -free graph of minimum degree at least d has a 2-factor. These results imply that for k ≥ d + 2, no connected graphs F except for stars of order at most d + 2 make {K1,k, F} a forbidden pair for d, while for every connected graph F makes {K1,k, F} a forbidden pair for d. We consider the remaining range of , and prove that only a finite number of connected graphs F make {K1,k, F} a forbidden pair for d.

The partition functions of the Ising and Potts models in statistical mechanics are well known to be partial evaluations of the Tutte–Whitney polynomial of the appropriate graph. The Ashkin–Teller model generalizes the Ising model and the four-state Potts model, and has been extensively studied since its introduction in 1943. However, its partition function (even in the symmetric case) is not a partial evaluation of the Tutte–Whitney polynomial. In this paper, we show that the symmetric Ashkin–Teller partition function can be obtained from a generalized Tutte–Whitney function which is intermediate in a precise sense between the usual Tutte–Whitney polynomialof the graph and that of its dual.

Alweiss, Lovett, Wu, and Zhang introduced $q$-spread hypergraphs in their breakthrough work regarding the sunflower conjecture, and since then $q$-spread hypergraphs have been used to give short proofs of several outstanding problems in probabilistic combinatorics. A variant of $q$-spread hypergraphs was implicitly used by Kahn, Narayanan, and Park to determine the threshold for when a square of a Hamiltonian cycle appears in the random graph $G_{n,p}$. In this paper, we give a common generalization of the original notion of $q$-spread hypergraphs and the variant used by Kahn, Narayanan, and Park.

We consider the k-party communication complexity of the problem of determining if a word w is of the form , for fixed letters . Using the well-known theorem of Hindman (a Ramsey-type result about finite subsets of natural numbers), we prove that for and 5 the communication complexity of the problem increases with the length of the word w.

For any partition of $\{1, 2, \ldots{,}\, n\}$ we define its increments$X_i, 1 \leq i \leq n$ by $X_i = 1$ if $i$ is the smallest element in the partition block that contains it, $X_i = 0$ otherwise. We prove that for partially exchangeable random partitions (where the probability of a partition depends only on its block sizes in order of appearance), the law of the increments uniquely determines the law of the partition. One consequence is that the Chinese Restaurant Process CRP($\theta$) (the partition with distribution given by the Ewens sampling formula with parameter $\theta$) is the only exchangeable random partition with independent increments.

We show that the complete list of regular excluded minors for the class of signed-graphic matroids is M*(G1),. . . , M*(G29), R15, R16. Here G1,. . . , G29 are the vertically 2-connected excluded minors for the class of projective-planar graphs and R15 and R16 are two regular matroids that we will define in the article.

Let P be a monotone increasing graph property, let G = (V, E) be a graph, and let q be a positive integer. In this paper, we study the (1: q) Maker–Breaker game, played on the edges of G, in which Maker's goal is to build a graph that satisfies the property P. It is clear that in order for Maker to have a chance of winning, G itself must satisfy P. We prove that if G satisfies P in some strong sense, that is, if one has to delete sufficiently many edges from G in order to obtain a graph that does not satisfy P, then Maker has a winning strategy for this game. We also consider a different notion of satisfying some property in a strong sense, which is motivated by a problem of Duffus, Łuczak and Rödl [6].

In Achlioptas processes, starting from an empty graph, in each step two potential edges are chosen uniformly at random, and using some rule one of them is selected and added to the evolving graph. The evolution of the rescaled size of the largest component in such variations of the Erdős–Rényi random graph process has recently received considerable attention, in particular for Bollobás's ‘product rule’. In this paper we establish the following result for rules such as the product rule: the limit of the rescaled size of the ‘giant’ component exists and is continuous provided that a certain system of differential equations has a unique solution. In fact, our result applies to a very large class of Achlioptas-like processes.

Our proof relies on a general idea which relates the evolution of stochastic processes to an associated system of differential equations. Provided that the latter has a unique solution, our approach shows that certain discrete quantities converge (after appropriate rescaling) to this solution.

For a subgroup W of the hyperoctahedral group On which is generated by reflections, we consider the linear dependence matroid MW on the column vectors corresponding to the reflections in W. We determine all possible automorphism groups of MW and determine when W ≅ = Aut(MW). This allows us to connect combinatorial and geometric symmetry. Applications to zonotopes are also considered. Signed graphs are used as a tool for constructing the automorphisms.

Let Tn denote the ‘optimal’ tree, i.e. c(Tn) =min{c(T)[ratio ]T is a directed, rooted tree in with n vertices}. We establish general conditions on the asymptotic behaviour of the moments of the order statistics of the variables c11, c12, [ctdot ], cin which guarantee the existence of sequences {an}, {bn}, and {dn} such that b−1n (c(Tn)−an) →N(0, 1) in distribution, d−1nc(Tn)→1 in probability, and d−1nE(c(Tn))→1 as n→∞, and we explicitly determine these sequences. The proofs of the main results rely upon the properties of general random mappings of the set {1, 2, [ctdot ], n} into itself. Our results complement and extend those obtained by McDiarmid [9] for optimal branchings in a complete directed graph.

A detachment of a graph $G$ is formed by splitting each vertex into one or more subvertices, and sharing the incident edges arbitrarily among the subvertices. In this paper we consider the question of whether a graph $H$ is a detachment of some complete graph $K_n$. When $H$ is large and restricted to belong to certain classes of graphs, for example bounded degree planar triangle-free graphs, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions which give a complete characterization.

A harmonious colouring of a simple graph $G$ is a proper vertex colouring such that each pair of colours appears together on at most one edge. The harmonious chromatic number$h(G)$ is the least number of colours in such a colouring. The results on detachments of complete graphs give exact results on harmonious chromatic number for many classes of graphs, as well as algorithmic results.

We generalize a minimal 3-connectivity result of Halin from graphs to binary matroids. As applications of this theorem to minimally 3-connected matroids, we obtain new results and short inductive proofs of results of Oxley and Wu. We also give new short inductive proofs of results of Dirac and Halin on minimally k-connected graphs for k ∈ {2,3}.

Consider the class of graphs on n vertices which have maximum degree at most 1/2n−1+τ, where τ [ges ] −n1/2+ε for sufficiently small ε > 0. We find an asymptotic formula for the number of such graphs and show that their number of edges has a normal distribution whose parameters we determine. We also show that expectations of random variables on the degree sequences of such graphs can often be estimated using a model based on truncated binomial distributions.

We expand the critical point for site percolation on the d-dimensional hypercubic lattice in terms of inverse powers of 2d, and we obtain the first three terms rigorously. This is achieved using the lace expansion.
