We prove two theorems on continuous modules: Decomposition Theorem. A continuous module M has a decomposition, M = M1 ⊕ M2, such that M1 is essential over a direct sum of indecomposable summands Ai of M, and M2 has no uniform submodules; and these data are uniquely determined by M up to isomorphism. Direct Sum Theorem. A finite direct sum of indecomposable modules Ai is continuous if and only if each Ai is continuous and Aj-injective for all j ≠ i.

Let ${{G}_{0}}$ and ${{G}_{1}}$ be countable abelian groups. Let ${{\gamma }_{i}}$ be an automorphism of ${{G}_{i}}$ of order two. Then there exists a unital Kirchberg algebra $A$ satisfying the Universal Coefficient Theorem and with $[{{1}_{A}}]\,=\,0$ in ${{K}_{0}}(A)$, and an automorphism $\alpha \,\in \,\text{Aut}(A)$ of order two, such that ${{K}_{0}}(A)\,\cong \,{{G}_{0}}$, such that ${{K}_{1}}(A)\,\cong \,{{G}_{1}}$, and such that ${{\alpha }_{*}}\,:\,{{K}_{i}}(A)\,\to \,{{K}_{i}}(A)$ is ${{\gamma }_{i}}$. As a consequence, we prove that every ${{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}}$-graded countable module over the representation ring $R({{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}})$ of ${{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}}$ is isomorphic to the equivariant $K$-theory ${{K}^{{{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}}}}(A)$ for some action of ${{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}}$ on a unital Kirchberg algebra $A$.

Along the way, we prove that every not necessarily finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}\left[ {{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}} \right]$-module which is free as a $\mathbb{Z}$-module has a direct sum decomposition with only three kinds of summands, namely $\mathbb{Z}\left[ {{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}} \right]$ itself and $\mathbb{Z}$ on which the nontrivial element of ${{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}}$ acts either trivially or by multiplication by −1.

Let G be a finite group of automorphisms of the ring R, and let RG denote the ring of fixed points of G in R; that is, RG={x∊R|Xg = x,∀∊ G}. Let |G| denote the order of G. In this note, we prove the following:

Theorem.Assume that R has no nilpotent ideals and no |G|-torsion. Then if RG is semi-simple Artinian, R is semi-simple Artinian.

Let $(X,L)$ be a polarized manifold over the complex number field with dim$X=n$. In this paper, we consider a conjecture of M. C. Beltrametti and A. J. Sommese and we obtain that this conjecture is true if $n=3$ and ${{h}^{0}}\,(L)\,\ge \,2$, or $\dim\,\text{Bs}|L|\le 0$ for any $n\ge 3$. Moreover we can generalize the result of Sommese.

For an $N$-step self-avoiding walk on the hypercubic lattice ${{Z}^{d}}$, we prove that the meansquare end-to-end distance is at least ${{N}^{4/(3d)}}$ times a constant. This implies that the associated critical exponent $v$ is at least $2/(3d)$, assuming that $v$ exists.

Sufficient conditions are given for the error norm and coefficients of best rational Chebyshev approximation on a domain to depend continuously on the domain. Examples of discontinuity are given.

Let Fn be the free group on {ai:i ∊ ℤ n} where the set of congruence classes mod n is used as an index set for the generators. The permutation (1, 2, 3, …, n) of ℤn induces an automorphism θ of Fn by permuting the subscripts of the generators. Suppose w is a word in Fn and let N(w) denote the normal closure of {wθi-1:l ≤i≤n}. Define the group Gn(w) by Gn(w)=Fn/N(w) and call wdi-1=l the relation (i) of Gn(w).

The eigenvalue problem $-{{\Delta }_{p}}u-{{\Delta }_{q}}u=\lambda {{\left| u \right|}^{q-2}}u$ with $p\,\in \,\left( 1,\,\infty \right),\,q\,\in \,\left( 2,\,\infty \right),\,p\ne \,q$ subject to the corresponding homogeneous Neumann boundary condition is investigated on a bounded open set with smooth boundary from ${{\mathbb{R}}^{N}}$ with $N\,\ge \,2$. A careful analysis of this problem leads us to a complete description of the set of eigenvalues as being a precise interval $\left( {{\lambda }_{1,}}+\infty \right)$ plus an isolated point $\lambda \,=\,0$. This comprehensive result is strongly related to our framework, which is complementary to the well-known case $p\,=\,q\,\ne \,2$ for which a full description of the set of eigenvalues is still unavailable.

Recently, Balder proved a version of FatoiTs lemma in several dimensions which, inter alia, generalizes a version of this lemma due to Artstein. Here we show how the latter result can be used to derive the former, by using Chacon's biting lemma.

Let Tn denote a tournament of order n, let G(Tn) denote the automorphism group of Tn, let |G| denote the order of the group G, and let g(n) denote the maximum of |G(Tn)| taken over all tournaments Tn of order n. Goldberg and Moon conjectured [2] that for all n≥1 with equality holding if and only if n is a power of 3. In an addendum to [2] it was pointed out that their conjecture is equivalent to the conjecture that if G is any odd order subgroup of Sn, the symmetric group of degree n, then with equality possible if and only if n is a power of 3. The latter conjecture was proved in [1] by John D. Dixon who made use of the Feit-Thompson theorem in his proof. In this paper we avoid use of the Feit-Thompson result and give a combinatorial proof of the Goldberg-Moon conjecture.

We study two sufficient conditions that imply global injectivity for a ${{C}^{1}}$ map $X:{{\mathbb{R}}^{2}}\to {{\mathbb{R}}^{2}}$ such that its Jacobian at any point of ${{\mathbb{R}}^{2}}$ is not zero. One is based on the notion of half-Reeb component and the other on the Palais–Smale condition. We improve the first condition using the notion of inseparable leaves. We provide a new proof of the sufficiency of the second condition. We prove that both conditions are not equivalent, more precisely we show that the Palais–Smale condition implies the nonexistence of inseparable leaves, but the converse is not true. Finally, we show that the Palais–Smale condition it is not a necessary condition for the global injectivity of the map $X$.

The usual constructions of classifying spaces for monoidal categories produce $\text{CW}$-complexes with many cells that,moreover, do not have any proper geometric meaning. However, geometric nerves of monoidal categories are very handy simplicial sets whose simplices have a pleasing geometric description: they are diagrams with the shape of the 2-skeleton of oriented standard simplices. The purpose of this paper is to prove that geometric realizations of geometric nerves are classifying spaces for monoidal categories.

The purpose of this paper is, as part of the stratification of Cohen–Macaulay rings, to investigate the question of when the fiber products are almost Gorenstein rings. We show that the fiber product $R \times _T S$ of Cohen–Macaulay local rings R, S of the same dimension $d>0$ over a regular local ring T with $\dim T=d-1$ is an almost Gorenstein ring if and only if so are R and S. In addition, the other generalizations of Gorenstein properties are also explored.

In this paper we shall use matrix methods to obtain several generalizations of a well known result of Eneström and Kakeya about the location of the zeros of polynomials. We shall also obtain zero-free regions of polynomials having complex coefficients. Finally we prove some results concerning the zeros of a class of polynomials.

Let a ≧ 0, Ia = ﹛a, a + 1, …﹜ and consider the nth order linear difference m ∈ Ia, α0(m) = 1 on Ia. Summability conditions are placed on the coefficients αj(m), 1 ≦ j ≦ n, such that the equation Pu(m) = 0 is eventually disconjugate. Conditions for eventual right disfocality are also given.

A popular problem today in orthogonal polynomials is that of classifying all second order differential equations which have orthogonal polynomial solutions. We show that the Krall polynomials satisfy a second order equation of the form

Let RM be a nonsingular module such that B = EndR(M) is left nonsingular and has as its maximal left quotient ring, where is the injective hull of RM. Then it is shown that there is a lattice isomorphism between the lattice C(M) of all complement submodules of RM and the lattice C(B) of all complement left ideals of B, and that RM is a CS module if and only if B is a left CS ring. In particular, this is the case if RM is nonsingular and retractable.

AS a generalization of Morita duality, Kraemer introduced the notion of quasi-duality and showed that each left linearly compact ring has a quasi-duality. Let R be an associative ring with identity and R[[x]] the power series ring. We prove that (1) R[[x]] has a quasi-duality if and only if R has a quasi-duality; (2) R[[x]] is left linearly compact if and only if R is left linearly compact and left noetherian; and (3) R[[x]] has a Morita duality if and only if R is left noetherian and has a Morita duality induced by a bimodule RUS such that S is right noetherian.

We establish asymptotics and uniqueness (up to translation) of travelling waves for delayed $2\text{D}$ lattice equations with non-monotone birth functions. First, with the help of Ikehara’s Theorem, the a priori asymptotic behavior of travelling wave is exactly derived. Then, based on the obtained asymptotic behavior, the uniqueness of the traveling waves is proved. These results complement earlier results in the literature.

In this article, we are concerned with the following inequality

This inequality was first considered by A. Renyi, who gave the general differentiate solution of (1) for n≥3, [1]. With the help of this inequality one can characterize Renyi’s entropy [2].

We shall state later the Renyi’s result, which will be a special case of the Theorem 3.
