We give a criterion in order that an affine variety defined over any field has a complete intersection (ci.) embedding into some affine space. Moreover we give an example of a smooth real curve C all of whose embeddings into affine spaces are c.i.; nevertheless it has an embedding into ℝ3 which cannot be realized as a c.i. by polynomials.

In this paper, we show that the lattice of closed subsets of the completion, in the Jacobson radical topology, of a finitely generated module M is isomorphic to the completion, under the Hausdorff topology, of the lattice of closed subsets of M. This extends submodule-theoretic results for complete modules to modules satisfying Chevalley's Theorem. We show that the lattice of submodules of every finitely generated module over a semi-local ring R is complete in the Hausdorff topology if and only if R is complete in the Jacobson radical topology.

In his 1922 article [l] on functions of bounded variation, Vitali gave a method for constructing monotone non-absolutely continuous functions, generalizing ideas from the ternary set introduced in another connection by Cantor. In [2], Hille and Tamarkin gave a full account of the "middle-third" function, showing it to be a singular distribution function, and finding its characteristic function. In [3], Evans obtained a generalization of the middle - third function by discarding middle intervals of length other than one-third, and obtained algorithms by which the moments of his function could be calculated. Invarious papers, among them [4], Wintner studied infinite convolutions of symmetric Bernoulli distributions, finding a great variety of distributions whose characteristic functions were of the form

If X is a topological space and Y is any set, then we call a family $\mathcal {F}$ of maps from X to Y nowhere constant if for every non-empty open set U in X there is $f \in \mathcal {F}$ with $|f[U]|> 1$, i.e., f is not constant on U. We prove the following result that improves several earlier results in the literature.

If X is a topological space for which $C(X)$, the family of all continuous maps of X to $\mathbb {R}$, is nowhere constant and X has a $\pi $-base consisting of connected sets then X is $\mathfrak {c}$-resolvable.

Let (a1, a2, …, am), ai ∊ {l, 2, …, n}, be an m-permutation of n (repetitions allowed) with exactly kj of the a's equal to j, j = 1, 2, …, n, m = k1+ …+kn, fixed nonnegative integers. An inversion is a pair i, j such that i < j, ai > aj. Denote by N(r; k, …, kn) the number of such permutations with exactly r inversions.

Let $X$ be a reduced nonsingular quasiprojective scheme over $\mathbb{R}$ such that the set of real rational points $X\left( \mathbb{R} \right)$ is dense in $X$ and compact. Then $X\left( \mathbb{R} \right)$ is a real algebraic variety. Denote by $H_{k}^{a\lg }\left( X\left( \mathbb{R} \right),\,\mathbb{Z}/2 \right)$ the group of homology classes represented by Zariski closed $k$-dimensional subvarieties of $X\left( \mathbb{R} \right)$. In this note we show that $H_{1}^{a\lg }\left( X\left( \mathbb{R} \right),\,\mathbb{Z}/2 \right)$ is a proper subgroup of ${{H}_{1}}\left( X\left( \mathbb{R} \right),\,\mathbb{Z}/2 \right)$ for a nonorientable hyperelliptic surface $X$. We also determine all possible groups $H_{1}^{a\lg }\left( X\left( \mathbb{R} \right),\,\mathbb{Z}/2 \right)$ for a real ruled surface $X$ in connection with the previously known description of all possible topological configurations of $X$.

We characterize model polynomials that are cyclic in Dirichlet-type spaces in the unit ball of $\mathbb C^n$, and we give a sufficient capacity condition in order to identify noncyclic vectors.

A short proof of the following result of Bernstein and Ganea is given:

“Let X be a topological space which is homotopy dominated by a closed connected n-dimensional manifold M. If Hn (X; Z2 ) ≠ 0 then X has the homotopy type of M”.

It is also shown that the manifold in this theorem can be replaced by a Poincaré complex.

In 1968, Galvin conjectured that an uncountable poset $P$ is the union of countably many chains if and only if this is true for every subposet $Q\,\subseteq \,P$ with size ${{\aleph }_{1}}$. In 1981, Rado formulated a similar conjecture that an uncountable interval graph $G$ is countably chromatic if and only if this is true for every induced subgraph $H\,\subseteq \,G$ with size ${{\aleph }_{1}}$. Todorčević has shown that Rado's conjecture is consistent relative to the existence of a supercompact cardinal, while the consistency of Galvin's conjecture remains open. In this paper, we survey and collect a variety of results related to these two conjectures. We also show that the extension of Rado's conjecture to the class of all chordal graphs is relatively consistent with the existence of a supercompact cardinal.

It is well known that in the Euclidean plane there are seven distinct frieze patterns, i.e. seven ways to generate an infinite design bounded by two parallel lines. In the hyperbolic plane, this can be generalized to two types of frieze patterns, those bounded by concentric horocycles and those bounded by concentric equidistant curves. In certain boundary value problems associated with two-parameter ordinary differential equations defined and having 2p, (p>1), turning points in a given interval, there arises certain equations in integers whose solutions determine the coefficients in the asymptotic expansions for the eigenvalues [1,2, 3, pp. 134-139].

In this note, we patch up the proof of a Theorem due to Handel on the characterization of homotopy epimorphisms ([6], 2.2) and generalize a Theorem due to Ibisch on attaching disk-bundles to Dold fibrations ([7], Satz 1).

We introduce a new type of differentiability, called cofinite Fréchet differentiability. We show that the convex point-of-continuity property of Banach spaces is dual to the cofinite Fréchet differentiability of all equivalent norms. A corresponding result for dual spaces with the weak* convex point-of-continuity property is also established.

It is shown that if 1<n ≡ 0 or 1 (mod 2 m), then the edges of Kn may be partitioned into isomorphic copies of a graph D3(m) and also of a graph D4(m), graphs consisting respectively of a triangle with an attached path of m - 3 edges or a quadrilateral with an attached path of m - 4 edges. If m is a power of 2 then the above condition is shown to be necessary and sufficient for the existence of such a partition.

It is well known and immediate that in an associative ring a nilpotent one-sided ideal generates a nilpotent two-sided ideal. The corresponding open question for alternative rings was raised by M. Slater [6, p. 476]. Hitherto the question has been answered only in the case of a trivial one-sided ideal J (i.e., in case J2 = 0) [5]. In this note we solve the question in its entirety by showing that a nilpotent one-sided ideal K of an alternative ring generates a nilpotent two-sided ideal. In the process we find an upper bound for the index of nilpotency of the ideal generated. The main theorem provides another proof of the fact that a semiprime alternative ring contains no nilpotent one-sided ideals. Finally we note the analogous result for locally nilpotent one-sided ideals.

Let $P$ be a transitive permutation group of order ${{p}^{m}},\,p$ an odd prime, containing a regular cyclic subgroup. The main result of this paper is a determination of the suborbits of $P$. The main result is used to give a simple proof of a recent result by J. Morris on Cayley digraph isomorphisms.

The purpose of this paper is to consider a representation for the elements of a linear topological space in the form of a σ-integral over a linearly ordered subset of V; this ordered subset is what will be called an L basis. The formal definition of an L basis is essentially an abstraction from ideas used, often tacitly, in proofs of many of the theorems concerning integral representations for continuous linear functionals on function spaces.

The L basis constructed in this paper differs in several basic ways from the integral basis considered by Edwards in [5]. Since the integrals used here are of Hellinger type rather than Radon type one has in the approximating sums for the integral an immediate and natural analogue to the partial sum operators of summation basis theory.

The invariant operator range lattices of a wide class of uniformly closed algebras (including C*-algebras) are stable under weak closures. There is an algebra whose invariant operator range lattice contains properly the corresponding lattice of its norm closure. An operator range transitive algebra is operator range n -transitive for all n. A normal operator is algebraic if and only if each of its invariant operator ranges is the range of some operator commuting with it.

In this paper we prove the sharp inequality

where $P_{n}^{\left( s \right)}\left( x \right)$ is the classical ultraspherical polynomial of degree $n$ and order $s\ge n\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{4}$. This inequality can be refined in $\left[ 0,z_{n}^{s} \right]$ and $\left[ z_{n}^{s},1 \right]$, where $z_{n}^{s}$ denotes the largest zero of $P_{n}^{\left( s \right)}\left( x \right)$.

Considering a mapping $g$ holomorphic on a neighbourhood of a rationally convex set $K\subset {{\mathbb{C}}^{n}}$, and range into the complex projective space $\mathbb{C}{{\mathbb{P}}^{m}}$, the main objective of this paper is to show that we can uniformly approximate $g$ on $K$ by rational mappings defined from ${{\mathbb{C}}^{n}}$ into $\mathbb{C}{{\mathbb{P}}^{m}}$. We only need to ask that the second Čech cohomology group ${{\overset{\scriptscriptstyle\smile}{H}}^{2}}\left( K,\mathbb{Z} \right)$ vanishes.
