In this work, we study the existence of solutions of nonlinear fractional coupled system of $\varphi $-Hilfer type in the frame of Banach spaces. We improve a property of a measure of noncompactness in a suitably selected Banach space. Darbo’s fixed point theorem is applied to obtain a new existence result. Finally, the validity of our result is illustrated through an example.

Free binary systems are shown not to admit idempotent means. This refutes a conjecture of the author. It is also shown that the extension of Hindman’s theorem to nonassociative binary systems formulated and conjectured by the author is false.

In [2] we showed how, for a certain class of outer measures on a metric space, a measurable cover could be constructed for each subset A of the space. The function is a closure operator, and in this note some of the properties of the resulting topology are investigated. In particular, we obtain a sufficient condition for the space to be connected.

Given a domain D in R” and two specified points P0 and P1 in D we consider the problem of minimizing u(p1) over all functions harmonic in D with values between 0 and 1 normalised by the requirement u(P0) = 1/2. We show that when D is suitably regular the problem has a unique solution u* which necessarily takes on boundary values 0 or 1 almost everywhere on the boundary. In the process we prove that it is possible to separate P0 and P1by a harmonic function whose boundary value is supported in an arbitrary set of positive measure. These results depend on the fact that (under suitable regularity conditions) a harmonic function which vanishes on an open subset of the boundary has a normal derivative which is almost everywhere non-vanishing in that set.

We define a refined motivic dimension for an algebraic variety by modifying the definition of motivic dimension by Arapura. We apply this to check and recheck the generalized Hodge conjecture for certain varieties, such as uniruled, rationally connected varieties and a rational surface fibration.

We discuss the question of extending homeomorphisms between closed subsets of the Cantor cube $D^{\tau }$. It is established that any homeomorphism between two closed negligible subsets of $D^{\tau }$ can be extended to an autohomeomorphism of $D^{\tau }$.

Abstract. The weighted mean matrix ${{M}_{a}}$ is the triangular matrix $\left\{ {{a}_{k}}/{{A}_{n}} \right\}$, where ${{a}_{n}}\,>\,0$ and ${{A}_{n}}\,:=\,{{a}_{1}}\,+\,{{a}_{2}}\,+\cdots +\,{{a}_{n}}$. It is proved that, subject to ${{n}^{c}}{{a}_{n}}$ being eventually monotonic for each constant $c$ and to the existence of $\alpha \,:=\,\lim \,\frac{{{A}_{n}}}{n{{a}_{n}}},\,{{M}_{a}}\,\in \,B\left( {{l}_{p}} \right)$ for $1\,<\,p\,<\infty $ if and only if $\alpha \,<\,p$.

Let R be a ring such that, for each element a of R, there exists a positive integer n(a) > 1, depending on a, such that an(a)=a. Jacobson proved that such a ring R is necessarily commutative and the purpose of this paper is to give a proof of Jacobson’s Theorem that does not involve the use of the axiom of choice.

We take this opportunity to point out that all rings are assumed to be associative and that nothing beyond elementary ring theory is assumed in the proof to follow. Such ring theory can be found, for example, in [1].

In 1962, J. M. G. Fell [5] indicated the important role played by certain topological spaces which, though locally compact in a specialized sense, do not, in general, satisfy even the weakest separation axiom. He called them "locally compact". These were called "punktal kompakt" by Flachsmeyer [6] and to avoid confusion, we shall call them pointwise compact spaces.

We show that every element in the Brauer-Wall group of a field with characteristic different from 2 is represented uniquely by a division graded algebra, (i.e. homogeneous elements are invertible) but, of course, not necessarily by a graded (division algebra). This is a fairly direct consequence of Wall's structure theory for central simple Z/2-graded algebras.

We examine spectral behavior of irreducible tuples that do not admit the boundary property. In particular, we prove under some mild assumption that the spectral radius of such an $m$-tuple $\left( {{T}_{1}},\,.\,.\,.\,,\,{{T}_{m}} \right)$must be the operator norm of $T_{1}^{*}\,{{T}_{1}}\,+\,.\,.\,.\,+\,T_{m}^{*}{{T}_{m}}$. We use this simple observation to ensure the boundary property for an irreducible, essentially normal, joint q-isometry, provided it is not a joint isometry. We further exhibit a family of reproducing Hilbert $\mathbb{C}\left[ {{z}_{1}},\,.\,.\,.\,,{{z}_{m}} \right]$-modules (of which the Drury–Arveson Hilbert module is a prototype) with the property that any two nested unitarily equivalent submodules are indeed equal.

We give explicit presentations of the integral equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannians and flag varieties in type A, arising from their natural embeddings in the corresponding infinite (Sato) Grassmannian and flag variety. These presentations are compared with results obtained by Lam and Shimozono, for rational equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, and by Larson, for the integral cohomology of the moduli stack of vector bundles on .

In the Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory with the Axiom of Choice, a forcing notion is “$\kappa $-distributive” if and only if it is “$\kappa $-sequential.” We show that without the Axiom of Choice, this equivalence fails, even if we include a weak form of the Axiom of Choice, the Principle of Dependent Choice for $\kappa $. Still, the equivalence may still hold along with very strong failures of the Axiom of Choice, assuming the consistency of large cardinal axioms. We also prove that although a $\kappa $-distributive forcing notion may violate Dependent Choice, it must preserve the Axiom of Choice for families of size $\kappa $. On the other hand, a $\kappa $-sequential can violate the Axiom of Choice for countable families. We also provide a condition of “quasiproperness” which is sufficient for the preservation of Dependent Choice, and is also necessary if the forcing notion is sequential.

We study linear projections on Plücker space whose restriction to the Grassmannian is a non-trivial branched cover. When an automorphism of the Grassmannian preserves the fibers, we show that the Grassmannian is necessarily of $m$-dimensional linear subspaces in a symplectic vector space of dimension $2m$, and the linear map is the Lagrangian involution. The Wronski map for a self-adjoint linear diòerential operator and the pole placement map for symmetric linear systems are natural examples.

We present a new proof of the compactness of bilinear paraproducts with CMO symbols. By drawing an analogy to compact linear operators, we first explore further properties of compact bilinear operators on Banach spaces and present examples. We then prove compactness of bilinear paraproducts with CMO symbols by combining one of the properties of compact bilinear operators thus obtained with vanishing Carleson measure estimates and interpolation of bilinear compactness.

In this note, we show that in a complete $\operatorname {\mathrm {CAT}}(0)$ space pointwise convergence of proximal mappings under a certain normalization condition implies Mosco convergence.

We prove simplicity for incomplete rank 2 Kac—Moody groups over algebraic closures of finite fields with trivial commutation relations between root groups corresponding to prenilpotent pairs. We don't use the (yet unknown) simplicity of the corresponding finitely generated groups (i.e., when the ground field is finite). Nevertheless we use the fact that the latter groups are just infinite (modulo center).
