A space Z is said to have the complete invariance property (CIP) provided that every nonempty closed subset of Z is the fixed point set of some continuous self-mapping of Z. In this paper it is shown that there exists a one-dimensional contractible planar continuum having CIP whose wedge with itself at a specified point is contractible, planar, and does not have CIP.

Given a holomorphic self-map $\varphi $ of $\mathbb {D}$ (the open unit disc in $\mathbb {C}$ ), the composition operator $C_{\varphi } f = f \circ \varphi $ , $f \in H^2(\mathbb {\mathbb {D}})$ , defines a bounded linear operator on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb {\mathbb {D}})$ . The model spaces are the backward shift-invariant closed subspaces of $H^2(\mathbb {\mathbb {D}})$ , which are canonically associated with inner functions. In this paper, we study model spaces that are invariant under composition operators. Emphasis is put on finite-dimensional model spaces, affine transformations, and linear fractional transformations.

A new concept—that of pseudoconsistency—which seems to be particularly appropriate for the estimation of a quantile is introduced. It is shown without any conditions whatsoever on the underlying distributionthat the sample quantile is strongly pseudoconsistent for the corresponding population quantile. The asymptotic distribution of the sample quantiles and order statistics is derived when the underlying distribution is discrete.

In [7,3.1 ] the authors show that if a space X is realcompact and locally compact, then X* is a P′-space. In this paper we show that the hypothesis of realcompactness can be weakened. We also look at other conditions on X that are sufficient to guarantee that X* is a P′-space.

In this note we give a characterisation of ordered skew fields by certain properties of the negative elements.

Properties of negative elements of a skew field K are then interpreted as statements about "betweenness" in any affine geometry over K, or as statements about "separation" in any projective geometry over K.

In this way, our axioms for ordered fields permit of immediate translation into postulates of order for affine or projective geometry (over a field). The postulates so obtained seem simple enough to be of interest, (cf. [4], p. 22)

An example is given of a topological space that does not admit a strongly complete quasi-uniform structure.

This short note refines a noncommutative (nc) Oka–Weil theorem by using a characterization of free compact nc sets based on the notion of dilation hulls. A consequence of it is that any free holomorphic function can be represented as a free polynomial on each free compact nc set.

In this note we study the finite groups whose subgroup lattices are dismantlable.

Let $\omega ^*(n)$ be the number of primes p such that $p-1$ divides n. Recently, M. R. Murty and V. K. Murty proved that

They further conjectured that there is some positive constant C such that

as $x\rightarrow \infty $ . In this short note, we give the correct order of the sum by showing that

We provide a novel proof of the existence of regulator indecomposables in the cycle group $C{{H}^{2}}\left( X,\,1 \right)$, where $X$ is a sufficiently general product of two elliptic curves. In particular, the nature of our proof provides an illustration of Beilinson rigidity.

We derive telescoping majorants and minorants for some classes of series and give applications of these results.

We consider the problem: If K is a compact normal operator on a Hilbert module E, and f ∈ C0(SpK) is a function which is zero in a neighbourhood of the origin, is f(K) of finite rank? We show that this is the case if the underlying C*-algebra is abelian, and that the range of f(K) is contained in a finitely generated projective submodule of E.

We prove a quantized version of a theorem by M. V. Sheĭnberg: A uniform algebra equipped with its canonical, i.e., minimal, operator space structure is operator amenable if and only if it is a commutative ${{C}^{*}}$-algebra.

A sequence (xi) in a Banach space X is a Schauder basis for X provided for each x∊X there is a unique sequence of scalars (ai) such that

We find an infinite word w on four symbols with the following property: Two occurrences of any block in w must be separated by more than the length of the block. That is, in any subword of w of the form xyx, the length of y is greater than the length of x. This answers a question of C. Edmunds connected to the Burnside problem for groups.

In the first part of this paper [l] there was introduced a hypothetical computing device, the Q-machine. It was derived by abstracting from the process of calculating carried out by a man on his fingers, assuming an adequate supply of hands and the ability to grow fingers at will. The Q-machine was shown to be equal in computing power to a universal Turing machine. That is, the Q-machine could compute any number regarded as computable by any theory of computability developed so far. It may be recalled here that Turing machines were obtained by Turing [2] by abstracting from the process of calculating carried out by a man on some concrete 'symbol space' (tape, piece of paper, blackboard) by means of fixed but arbitrary symbols. Hence the contrast between the Q-machine and the Turing machines is that between arithmetical manipulation of counters and logical manipulation of symbols. In particular, one might say, loosely, that in a Turing machine, as in arithmetic, numbers are represented by signs whereas in the Q-machine, as on a counting frame, numbers represent themselves.

Four combinatorial interpretations of identities due to L. J. Slater that have recently been published are slightly incorrect. I show how they may be corrected and also provide a new interpretation of one of these identities.
