Unless otherwise specified, all spaces considered here are regular T1-spaces. A space X is called σ-discrete if X is the union of a countable family of discrete subspaces. Arhangel'skii [2] showed that the class of spaces which contain dense σ-discrete subspaces is productive. The fact that the class of spaces which contain dense subspaces of countable pseudocharacter is productive is obtained by Amirdzanov [1]. On the other hand, the class of spaces which contain metrizable spaces as dense subspaces is obviously not productive. As a generalized concept of metrizable spaces there is the concept of σ-spaces [14]. This class of spaces has many similar properties to the class of metrizable spaces. However we will point out a remarkable difference between the class of metrizable spaces and the class of σ-spaces by showing that the class of spaces which contain σ-spaces as dense subspaces is productive.

Let be the standard (n + 1) simplex with its standard triangulation. By the Generalized Poincare Conjecture, if n ≧ 5 and is a smooth homotopy w-sphere, then there exists a smooth triangulation , where K is a suitable subdivision of . On the other hand, in [3], N. Kuiper proves the following theorem.

In this paper we prove a commutative algebraic extension of a generalized Skolem–Mahler– Lech theorem. Let $A$ be a finitely generated commutative $K$–algebra over a field of characteristic 0, and let $\sigma$ be a $K$–algebra automorphism of $A$. Given ideals $I$ and $J$ of $A$, we show that the set $S$ of integers $m$ such that ${{\sigma }^{m}}(I)\,\supseteq \,J$ is a finite union of complete doubly infinite arithmetic progressions in $m$, up to the addition of a finite set. Alternatively, this result states that for an affine scheme $X$ of finite type over $K$, an automorphism $\sigma \,\in \,\text{Au}{{\text{t}}_{k}}(X)$, and $Y$ and $Z$ any two closed subschemes of $X$, the set of integers $m$ with ${{\sigma }^{m}}(Z)\,\subseteq \,Y$ is as above. We present examples showing that this result may fail to hold if the affine scheme $X$ is not of finite type, or if $X$ is of finite type but the field $K$ has positive characteristic.

Let C denote an irreducible, algebraic curve defined over an algebraically closed field k. Let ? be a singular point of C. We shall employ the following notation throughout the rest of this paper: R will denote the local ring at P, K the quotient field of the integral closure of R in K, A the completion of R with respect to its radical topology, and Ā the integral closure of A in its total quotient ring.

The non-archimedean power series spaces, ${{A}_{1}}(a)\,\text{and}\,{{A}_{\infty }}(b)$, are the best known and most important examples of non-archimedean nuclear Fréchet spaces. We prove that the range of every continuous linear map from ${{A}_{p}}(a)\,\text{to}\,{{A}_{q}}(b)$ has a Schauder basis if either $p\,=\,1$ or $p\,=\,\infty $ and the set ${{M}_{b,a}}$ of all bounded limit points of the double sequence (${{({{b}_{i}}/{{a}_{j}})}_{i,j\in \mathbb{N}}}$ is bounded. It follows that every complemented subspace of a power series space ${{A}_{p}}(a)$ has a Schauder basis if either $p\,=\,1$ or $p\,=\,\infty $ and the set ${{M}_{a,a}}$ is bounded.

In the present paper we completely describe the isomorphisms between projective elementary groups PSLn and PSLm (n ≥ 2, m ≥ 2) over division rings. It was found that such groups can be isomorphic only if n = m; the division rings are isomorphic or anti-isomorphic, except for the following groups:

PSL(2,F7) and PSL(3,F2); PSL(2, F4) and PSL(2,F5).

The idea is based on a deepening of the classical Hua's approach. This problem has been solved independently by H. Ren, Z. Wan and X. Wu using a different way

In the first part of the paper, given a continuous map f from a Hausdorff topological space X onto a Hausdorff topological space Y, we consider the reciprocal map f* from Y into the collection of closed subsets of X, which maps y ∈ Y to . is endowed with the pseudotopological structure of convergence of closed sets. We will use the filter description of this convergence, as defined by Choquet and Gähler [2], [5], which is equivalent to the “topological convergence” of sets as introduced by Frolík and Mrówka [4], [10]. These notions in fact generalize the convergence of sequences of sets defined by Hausdorff [6]. We show that the continuity of f* is equivalent to the openness of f. On f*(Y), the set of fibers of f, we consider the pseudotopological structure induced by the closed convergence on .

The decidability of the elementary theory of abelian groups, and their complete classification by elementary properties (i.e. those formalizable in the lower predicate calculus (LPC) of formal logic), were established by W. Szmielew [13]. More general results were proved by Eklof and Fischer [2], and G. Sabbagh [12]. The rather formidable "high-power" techniques used in obtaining these remarkable results, and the length of the proofs (W. Szmielew's proof takes about 70 pages) triggered off several attempts at simplification. M. I. Kargapolov's proof [3] unfortunately turned out to be erroneous (cf. J. Mennicke's review in the Journal of Symbolic Logic, vol. 32, p. 535).

We characterize the Local Langlands Correspondence $\left( \text{LLC} \right)$ for inner forms of $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{n}}$ via the Jacquet–Langlands Correspondence $\left( \text{JLC} \right)$ and compatibility with the Langlands Classification. We show that $\text{LLC}$ satisfies a natural compatibility with parabolic induction and characterize $\text{LLC}$ for inner forms as a unique family of bijections $\prod \left( \text{G}{{\text{L}}_{r}}\left( D \right) \right)\,\to \,\Phi \left( \text{G}{{\text{L}}_{r}}\left( D \right) \right)$ for each $r$, (for a fixed $D$), satisfying certain properties. We construct a surjective map of Bernstein centers $\mathfrak{Z}\left( \text{G}{{\text{L}}_{n}}\left( F \right) \right)\,\to \,\mathfrak{Z}\left( \text{G}{{\text{L}}_{r}}\left( D \right) \right)$ and show this produces pairs of matching distributions in the sense of Haines. Finally, we construct explicit Iwahori-biinvariant matching functions for unit elements in the parahoric Hecke algebras of $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{r}}\left( D \right)$, and thereby produce many explicit pairs of matching functions.

A theory of renormalization of divergent integrals over torus periods on $\text{GL}\left( 3 \right)$ is given, based on a relative truncation. It is shown that the renormalized periods of Eisenstein series have unexpected functional equations.

Let V be a class of similar algebras. This usage of the words “projective” and “injective” differs somewhat from the usage current in category theory.

Generalizing a celebrated theorem of Thompson, R. P. Martineau has established [4; 5] that a finite group which admits an elementary abelian group of automorphisms with trivial fixed-point subgroup is necessarily solvable. A critical observation in his approach to this problem is the fact that, corresponding to each prime divisor of its order, such a group contains a unique Sylow subgroup invariant (as a set) under the action. Hence, the theorem we shall derive here represents a modest extension of Martineau's result.

Nous étudions les résonances de Rayleigh créées par une boule en dimension deux et trois. Nous savons qu’elles convergent exponentiellement vite vers l’axe réel. Nous calculons exactement les fonctions résonantes associées puis nous les estimons asymptotiquement en fonction de la partie réelle des résonances. L’application de la formule de Green nous donne alors le taux de décroissance exponentielle de la partie imaginaire des résonances.

For a maximal torus in a quasi-split semi-simple simply-connected group over a local field of characteristic 0, Langlands and Shelstad constructed a cohomological invariant called the splitting invariant, which is an important component of their endoscopic transfer factors. We study this invariant in the case of a split real group and prove a decomposition theorem which expresses this invariant for a general torus as a product of the corresponding invariants for simple tori. We also show how this reduction formula allows for the comparison of splitting invariants between different tori in the given real group.

In this paper, we give a general explicit form of Cassels’ $p$-adic embedding theorem for number fields. We also give its refined form in the case of cyclotomic fields. As a byproduct, given an irreducible polynomial $f$ over $\mathbb{Z}$, we give a general unconditional upper bound for the smallest prime number $p$ such that $f$ has a simple root modulo $p$.

We calculate the group of homotopy classes of homotopy self-equivalences of 4-manifolds with free fundamental group and obtain a classification of such 4-manifolds up to s-cobordism.

A crucial ingredient in the theory of theta liftings of Kudla and Millson is the construction of a $q$-form $\varphi_{KM}$ on an orthogonal symmetric space, using Howe's differential operators. This form can be seen as a Thom form of a real oriented vector bundle. We show that the Kudla-Millson form can be recovered from a canonical construction of Mathai and Quillen. A similar result was obtaind by Garcia for signature $(2,q)$ in case the symmetric space is hermitian and we extend it to arbitrary signature.

This note is an addendum to my earlier paper [8]. The class of adjoint abelian operators discussed there was small because the compatibility relation between the operator and the duality map was too restrictive. (In effect, the relation is appropriate for Hilbert space, but ill-suited for other Banach spaces where the unit ball is not round.) However, the techniques introduced in [8] permit us to readily obtain a spectral theory (of the Dunford type) for a wider class of operators on Banach spaces, as we shall show.

A duality system for the operator T is an ordered sextuple

(i) T is a bounded linear operator mapping the Banach space B into B,

(ii) ϕ is a duality map from B to B*. Thus, for x ∊ B, ϕ(x) = x* ∊ B*, where ‖x‖ = ‖x*‖ and x*(x) = ‖x‖2. The existence of ϕ follows easily from the Hahn-Banach Theorem.

In this paper we study properties of the functions which satisfy modular equations for infinitely many primes. The two main results are:

1. 1) every such function is analytic in the upper half plane;

2. 2) if such function takes the same value in two different points ${{z}_{1}}$ and ${{z}_{2}}$ then there exists an $f$-preserving analytic bijection between neighbourhoods of ${{z}_{1}}$ and ${{z}_{2}}$.

Decompositions of spectral type are obtained for closed Hilbert space operators with empty resolvent set, but whose square has closure which is spectral. Krein space situations are also discussed.
