The seashore aleocharine genus Salinamexus Moore and Legner is revised. Three species are recognized, one of which is described as new (Salinamexus koreanussp. nov.). The genus Salinamexus and the species S. browni Moore and Legner and S. reticulatus (Moore and Legner) are redescribed. A key and illustrations of diagnostic features are provided.

Cuterebra emasculator, Fitch.—This species was supposed by Dr. Brauer to be the same as his C. scutellaris, but an examination of Fitch's type, now the property of the National Museum, discloses the fact that it is identical with C. fontinella, Clark. When describing the hairs of the thorax as yellowish, Dr. Fitch had evidently examined them in a very bright light, under which conditions they have a deceptive yellowish appearance, but in reality are altogether black.

During the summer of 1888 considerable anxiety was caused amongst North American millers by the alarming intelligence that the small Pyralid moth, bearing the name given above, had made its appearnce in one of our large Candian milling centres. There are two or three well-known insects which attack manufactured cereal products; but none of these, have ever occurred in injurious numbers in Canada.

By most systematists this family is still classifed with the Scoliidæ, although separated as a distinct family by the Swedish entomologist, C.G. Thomson, as early as 1874. I agree with Thomson, and belive these wasps form a distinct family, easily recognized by the characters made use of in my table of families.

The genus Engycistus, Fox based upon Myzine rufiventris, Cresson, was classifed by Cresson, Cameron and Fox with the Scoliidæ. Mr. Fox has kindly sent me specimens for examination, male and female, and I find them true Tiphiids; they have nothing to do with the Myzinidæ or Scoliiæ as now restricted.

The genus Pterombus, Smith, still unknown to me in nature, also evidently belongs here.

Ths paper describes and illustrates, with photomicrographs, the gross histological development of stages of the endoparasitoid Exoristobia philippinensis Ashmead in the puparia of three synanthropic flies under laboratory conditions. The major organ systems, especially nervous, digestive, reproductive and respiratory are traced.

In 1928 the writer described in The Canadian Entomologist, volume LX pages 148 to 151, two species of fleas from Colorado under the names Ceratophylius peromysci and Ceratophyllus citelli. Recent studies have shown that both of these names are synonyms.

Five species of Berytidae are reported to occur in Canada, Acanthophysa echinata Uhler being recorded for the first time. A key for identification, descriptions, a summary of the distribution, and notes on the biology are given.

I may give an addition to my note (June, No. 6, p. 120, 1884). During the last seventeen years this beetle has never been rare in Cambridge, Mass., but never so overwhelmingly common as this year. As this elegant beetle was the first I had collected here in October, 1867, it had become my pet, and I paid some attention to it every year. This year it was very common on a long board fence in Ware St., which I have to pass four times every day. The fence surrounds a large garden with many elm trees near. when I heard that the beetle had been very destructive to elm trees in some places on the north side of the College grounds, and that it had nearly denuded some trees in Sommerville, I gave closer attention to it. Till June the leaves of the elms in Ware St. were comparatively uninjured. Then appeared the second brood of larvæ, and very soon the leaves were honeycombed with more or less round holes, and turned yellow prematurely. The larvæ were first described by Harris, Injur. Ins., 1841, and the same repeated in all following editions; the edition of 1862 gives a figure of the larva and beetles.

The description of this species was founded on two specimens, one captured, the other said to be reared from the Liparid Byrdia rossi Curtis. As the types are lost, we depend for re-identification of the species on the description, the coloured picture and the host record.

The Canadian National Collection contains 2 specimens of an Ichneumon species reared from Byrdia rossi Curtis (♀ from Spence Bay, N.W.T., ♂ from Repulse Bay, N.W.T.) and 2 captured specimens evidently belonging to the same species (♀ from Yukon Territory, ♂ from Frobisher Bay, Baffin Isl.). Unfortunately none of the mentioned specimens matches the picture of I. lariae Curt., either in colour pattern or in size.

In recent years, Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) and other entomogenous spore-formers have received increased interest in view of their great potential for insect control. These insect pathogens are generally known as “microbial insecticides” and are so-called because of a spore-associated protein crystalline inclusion which have been shown to be toxic for some insects (Angus 1956). Krieg (1961) lists some one hundred insects, mainly Lepidoptera, which are susceptible to Bacillus thuringiensis and closely related bacteria.

The species described herein is referable to the subgenus Hyperomyzus Börner, which includes the species of Nasonovia in which the cornicles are swollen. This species can be distinguished from the two orher species known to occur in North America by means of the following key:

1. Apical segment of hind tarsus longer than apical rostral segment; antennae with apical portions of segments usually darker in macerated material; broadest portion of cornicles usually not much wider than broadest portion of cauda ___2

Diptychophora huixtla from Chiapas, Mexico, and Diptychophora powelli from Guerrero, Nayarit, and Oaxaca, Mexico, are described as new species. The two species can readily be distinguished from each other and from other Diptychophorini by their wing patterns and features of the genitalia.

Adult males were reared from larvae of the type previously associated with Anepeorus. These adult males key to and fit the description of Heptagenia cruentata Walsh. Because the larvae are very different from those of other Heptagenia species, a new genus, Raptoheptagenia, is proposed for cruentata. Adult males of Raptoheptagenia differ from those of Heptagenia in the anastomosis of two or more crossveins in the stigmatic area of the forewing, and in the subequal lengths of the foretarsus and tibia.

A new genus, Misturaphis, is described, with type-species Misturaphis shiloensis new species, from Artemisia caudata Michx. Cryptaphis bromi new species is described from Bromus inermis Leyss. Asiphonaphis anogis Hottes and Frison is declared a junior synonym of Pergandeidia corni Tissot, and P. corni is re-designated as type species of the genus Pseudasiphonaphis, with new name Pseudasiphonaphis corni (Tissot).

Species of the New World genus Stenopterina Macquart (1835, Hist. Nat. Dipt. 2: 453. Senopterina - lapsus) occur mostly in the tropics and subtropics. They are moderately slender metallic blue-green or cupreous flies, up to 12 mm. long with large head and rather long narrow wings, the latter parterncd in various ways with dark brown or black markings. In the type species, Dacus brevipes Fab., 1805 and its closest allies, the wing-pattern consists essentially of three separate areas of infuscation. First, a narrow uninterrupted black costal border extending from the apex of the auxiliary vein to the apex of the fourth. Second, a black streak filling the first basal cell and sometimes invading the cells adjoining it in front and behind. Third, a narrow black cloud on the posterior crossvein. Hendel (1914) in reviewing the genus, considered brevipes a variable species ranging from Texas to Brazil. The recent discovery in British Columbia of a species of Stenopterina with similar wing-pattern has led me to reexamine the status of species placed by Hendel as synonyms of brevipes, particularly Stenopterina caerulescens Lw., 1873, from Texas.

This paper presents descriptions of three new species of Ephemeroptera from Illinois, all belonging to the genus Ephemerella. These are forms segregated from material in the Illinois Natural History Survey collection; the types are deposited in that collection. Two of these species are closely related to the genotype, E. excrucians Walsh, and it was thought for some time that one or the other of them would prove to be that species. Study of the lectotype of excrucians showed, however, that both of these species are recognizably distinct from excrucians.
