Apterous viviparous female

General colour of body brown. In cleared specimens, the following parts are dark brown: head; thorax; cornicles; muscle attachment plates; spiracles; terminal segments of rostrum, including the distal portion of segment II; coxae; femora, except short areas near the bases; short distal portions, and short, indistinct areas at the bases of the tibiae; tarsi; antennal segments I and VI, and the distal half of IV and V. The remaining parts of the body and appendages are light yellowish-brown. The setae are long and numerous, giving the cleared specimens a conspicuously hairy appearance.

Since writing the notes on Rhyncophora which appeared in the Feburary issue, I have had an opportunity of obtaining Dr. Sharp's determination of the two species mentioned on pages 22 and 23. He writes to me as follows:- “The two weevils from Cape Breton are: 1. Otiorhynchus rugifrons, Gyll., 2. Sciaphilus muricatus, both common N. European insects. The Otiorhynchus is a slight var.; the Sciaphilus not distinguishable from Scottish specimens.”

Of the usual elongate oblong form, about 2-2/3 times as long as wide, moderately convex; color black with faint greenish lustre, base of antennae, tarsi, and in the male the apex of the front tibiae dull rufous. Pubescence thin, not concealing the derm, consisting of sparse subrecumbent fulvocinereous hairs abundantly intermixed with suberect black setae over the entire surface; pronotal and elytral marginal fringe of longer erect black hairs which are not at all recurved. Integuments polished throughout.

A trifle more than two years ago the writer first entertained the idea of preparing a synopsis of the Orthoptera of Nebraska, with the intention of publishing it as a special bulletin from the Agricultural Experiment Station. With that end in view, work was immediately begun; and in the course of a few months the greater portion of the manuscript was ready for the printer. At this time other matters that were considered of more immediate importance came up at the Station, and that of the Orthoptera was laid aside. It has now been lying nearly two years.

If the rule holds good absolutely that the same generic name should not be used in Entomologya and Botany, then Gracillaria must be dropped in one or the other. I do not know which has priority, but a name of a genus so old and well known as the Gracillaria of Micro-Lepidopterists ought scarcely to give place to an obscure genus of Cryptogamia.

Epinotia medioviridana (Kft.) (1908) is represented by very few specimens in any collection; there are two in the Canadian National Collection: a paratype (one of the six originally described) and a specimen from Tuxedo, N.Y. The species has been collected at Ottawa, which is its type locality, and in western Pennsylvania, but until now nothing has been known of its life history. During the summer of 1951, five last-instar larvae were collected from flowering raspberry, Rubus odoratus L., at Meach Lake, Que.; three were preserved and two reared to maturity. The following description has been obtained from the three preserved larvae and the two last-instar skins.

The following oils were evaluated for control of the pear psylla, Psylla pyricola Foerster, phytotoxicity, and persistence on Bartlett pear trees; Orchex 696, Orchex 796 with 0.46% emulsifier, Orchex 796 with 1% emulsifier, PGSO-1, PGSO-2, and Volck Supreme. The oils were applied at the rate of 5 gal per acre in a three-spray program, one at the delayed dormant period and two during the summer.

Orchex 796 (1% emulsifier) and Volck Superme oil gave the best control of pear psylla, PGSO-1 and PGSO-2 were intermediate, and Orchex 696 and Orchex 796 (0.46% emulsifier) were the least effective. Each of the oils gave excellent control of the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch).

The oils caused enlargement and corkiness of the bark lenticels on 1-, 2-, and 3-year old wood. The pear fruits showed darker green lenticels than unsprayed fruit, but this green spotting did not persist when the pears were ripened.

Analysis showed each oil to be persistent upon pear foliage. There was little loss after 8 days and an average of 28% loss after 25 days.

The earliest species which I noted during the past season, was the common and obnoxious currant saw-fly, Nematus ventricosus, which appeared on 15th May. Two days later I captured upon willow in bloom a specimen of Dolerus collaris, and on the 21st and 22nd found D. aprilis quite common on and about alders, with a few D. sericeus? and D. abdominalis. By the 24th May the strawberry saw-fly, Emphytus maculatus, and the raspberry saw-fly, Selandria rubi, were in considerable numbers, and at the same time appeared several less well known species in fields and woods, such as Hylotoma McCleayi. This species I found again on 2nd June and subsequent days, upon the flowers of choke-cherry. Later in the season specimens were found upon Spiræa. Selandria flavipes was captured on 10th June, and was abundant during the season. It could always be obtained by using a sweeping-net among the common fern. At the same time could be obtained in abundance upon the ferns greenish larvae which I have no doubt were those of that species.
