Holcaspis Arizonica, n. sp.– Gall globular, 9 mm. diam, pale ochreous, not shiny, attached to the base of the petiole of a leaf of Quercus Arizonica, Sargent. There is a projecting point next to the place of insertion. Within, the gall is brown, fibrous, moderately dense, at least dithalamous.

Fly emerging April 19, two females. Body 3½ mm. long, wings 3⅔mm; antennæ 2 mm., 15-jointed, joint 3 considerably the longest. Length of joints in μ: (3·) 360, (4·) 240, (5·) 200, (15·) 170. The joints, especially the apical ones, with fine longitudinal ridges, between which are rows of minute punctures. Head ferruginous; thorax and abdomen piceous; margins of mesthorax, and two spots on scutellum, dull ferruginous; legs bright ferruginous; anterior tibiæ with an apical projection' anterior tibial spurs bent; claws of all the legs falciform, with a large triangular basal tooth.

This paper is not by any means intended to be a full treatment of the species of the genus Apantesis, occurring in Canada. There is so much yet to be learned about many of the forms that the preparation of such an article is still quite impossible. The intention, therefore, is merely to present the rather incomplete notes we have made at Ottawa, with the hope that they may be of some use to students who are, or who may become, interested in these insects, and also that it may be seen at a glance what work has been done on some of the species, as well as what is still lacking with regard to others. There is considerable doubt as to the validity of some of the species of this genus, and these doubts as to the validity of some of the species of this genus, and these doubts can only be dispelled by careful and extensive breeding from the egg, taking accurate notes of the larvæ (in their different stages), the pupæ, etc. Large series of many of the so-called species will have to be bred before definite knowledge can be acquired.

Only two species of bird fleas were known from New Mexico: Ceratophyllus celsus celsus Jordan and C. petrochelidoni Wagner, both from the southeastern part of the state. Four new records of the latter species from northcentral New Mexico are added. An unpublished old record and seven new records of C. niger Fox are presented. Records of three rodent fleas, Catallagia decipiens Rothschild, Monopsyllus wagneri (Baker), and M. eumolpi (Rothschild), found in bird nests also are given.

During the summers of 1901–2, while at the Minnesota Seaside Station of Vancouver Island, Professor Raymond C. Osburn collected a number of Diptera, and during the these same seasons and the past summer Professor R. V. Harvey, of The Queen's School at Vancouver, British Columbia, collected in the same order. Since so little has been published on the Diptera of that province, we have thought that even a short paper on the Dipterological fauna would be of interest and probably of some value.

“Tumble-bugs” have been interesting to human beings for centuries. As these chubby insects roll their balls across paths, roads, and walks, persons stop to puzzle, and whether country boys, soldiers, golfers, or scientists, all are fascinated by the ball-rolling habit of these creatures.

The 1933 experiment in hybridizing Tropaea luna with Actias selene closed in the following manner:

Cocoons of Actias selene, formed in August, hatched in September, and the moths mated. A second brood of larvae was reared on rose leaves (purchased wholesale after the winter set in) but, owing to the difficulty of keeping this food supply fresh, the disease called Flatchery claimed all of the brood except one larva. The single cocoon, spun in December, gave us a female the following June, but this moth refused to mate with males of Tropaea luna.

Populations of potato leafhopper nymphs were sampled in two alfalfa fields throughout the summers of 1976 and 1977 in Montgomery County, Virginia. A dichlorvos-carton sampling method was used to collect nymphs from 3-stem alfalfa bouquets. Instars were based on head capsule measurements. The spatial distribution of nymphs generally fit the negative binomial model. Based on this distribution pattern optimum sample sizes were computed. The nymphal population can be reliably estimated within 20% c.v. during most of the alfalfa growth period. Although most variation was shown to be between samples and not between areas in the field, samples should be taken at random over the entire area of the field under study.

On page 351 of this magazine Professor Cockerell notes his observation of the Pogonomyrmex occidentalis at Ruleton, within twelve miles of the western limit of Kansas, and considers this as the indication of the eastern limit or beginning of the arid region. Our investigations of the range of this large ant in Kansas have shown us that its eastern limit is found far to the east of the point mentioned. The species occurs as far east in this State as the Sixth Principal Meridian, or in the counties of Republic, Ottawa, McPherson and Sedgwick, on a line about two-fifths of the length of the State from the eastern border. One would scarcely be acquainted with climatic conditions in Kansas who should consider this ant as a mark of the “arid region,” as west of the line indicated are found some of the best farming lands of the State. Especially is this true of the wheat lands, as the counties named are among those famous for the production of this cereal. Notwithstanding its occasional occurrence along the extreme eastern limit above indicated, the favoured home of the species is really within the western hundred miles of the State, and thence west to the mountains, where in specially suitable localities it sometimes occurs in astonishing abundance.

The Geometrid moth described below cannot be placed in any European or American genus known to me, and I therefore venture to institute a new genus for its reception.

The genus belongs to the Ennominœ, and the absence of a tongue and the possession of the dordal abdominal tufts serve to separate it readily from all the other Americal genera of the subfamily, as none of them, I believe, posses these two characters in combination.

Black, uniformly dark brown- or grey-pollinose. Thorax obscurely quadrivittate. Legs short-haired. Wings milk-white in both sexes.

Head black; frons and occiput, viewed from above, velvety with dark-brown tinge; bristles and hairs fine, black, the former about as long as third antennal segment less style. Antenna black, slightly shorter than head; style about half as long as third segment. Palpus and proboscis black.

Since the publication of my last contribution on the Massachusetts Cocciæ, in 1899, no iess than 34 other species have been found to inhabit Mass., some of which appear to be of recent introduction and new to the United States; and while the larger portion has been recorded from other States, we have found several interesting new species hitherto not known to science. I have abandoned in part the citation of the geographical distribution and many of their food-plants, as time will not permit me to consult some of the literature. I have included an additional check-list and the Bibliography. In the original check-list several species are listed whose names have since been changed as follows.

On page 577 of their great work on the Hemiptera, Amyot and Serville describe two species of Ledra. One, L. aurita, the well-known species of Europe, was characterized from specimens collected near Paris. I have specimens of it now before me. Its size, the broad membranous prolongation of the head, the ear-shaped horns on the thorax, together with other details of structure, separate it widely from any other homopterous insect. The other species described, L. perdita, though equally unique in form, was characterized under circumstances which, for such eminent scientists as Amyot and Serville, seem extraordinary. After a three-line description, they remark: “L'exemplaire unique d'après lequel cette espèce a été figurée, ayant été détruit, nous la décrivons d'après la figure.” Unfortunately, the figure, number five on plate II., is very poor. The species is credited to “Amérique septentrionale.”

Looking at the map, I have often wondered what bees might be found in those great northern regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan, from which few collections have been seen. Professor E. H. Strickland has sent me numerous species of Andrena from the region about Edmonton and thence southwest to Lethbridge. But he has also included two species obtained in the far north, in a latitude about the same as that of the southern tip of Greenland. They are quite different from the more southern species, and so far as I can see, they have not been described. It would thus appear that there is a distinctive northern Andrena fauna, probably of few species.

The larvæ of this Noctuid moth were again found at Ottawa the past season, in beds of Irises, on the grounds of the Central Experimental Farm. They were not, however, at all numerous, and did not do any appreciable harm this years. Two larvæ were collected on July 28, one of which was inflated; the other pupated on Aug. 1, the moth emerging on Sept. 7. Another larva was found on Aug. 4, the moth appearing on Sept. 15. The pupa of the former specimen was much larger than any of those obtained in 1903, an account of which appeared in the last Annual Report of the Entomological Society of Ontario. This pupa measured 30 mm. in length and 7.5 in width.
