The history of the wasps of temperate America has not been recorded. It appears that entomologists have no great desire to study those interesting insects; and although several species occur in Canada, we know little or nothing of their natural history. One species, the spotted wood wasp (Vespa maculata, Linn.), occurs commonly, as near as I can determine, about every third year, in our northern woods. Havinq partially studied its habits, and collected a series of the nests in all their stages, it is particularly in regard to the latter that I claim attention. But before I proceed to relate what I have ascertained regarding their architecture, it will suffice to state that each large nest which we notice suspended from trees towards the end of summer consisted of a colony of males, females and workers or imperfect females, as they are termed.

Long-term studies of the biology of bark and cambium-feeding insects have been limited to observations in the field or to rearing methods which present conditions deviating from the natural habitat and requiring considerable labor and material. A simple rearing technique is required which will simulate the normal habitat yet will allow the rearing of a numerous and continuously visible stock of specimens without repeated handling.

The Cleridæ are a rather small family of beetles, but make up for their comparatice scarcity by the beauty of form and colour shown by many of them. As a rule, they may be easily recognized by their resemblance to a few common types such as are found in all cabinets, and agree in possessing the followiong family characteristics: The antennæ are usually serrate, with the outer joints enlarged, forming an open or more rarely a compact club; the tarsi are five-jointed, the first or fourth joint often very small and indistinct, all but the fifth furnished with membranous appendages.

Eight species of spiders belonging to two families were collected on northeastern Devon Island, N.W.T., in connection with the Canadian International Biological Program, Tundra Biome. They are Lycosidae: Tarentula exasperans Pickard-Cambridge; Erigonidae: Acartauchenius pilifrons (Koch), Collinsia spetsbergensis (Thorell), Diplocephalus barbatus (Koch), Erigone psychrophila Thorell, Hilaira vexatrix (Pickard-Cambridge), Minyriolus pampia Chamberlin, and Typhochraestus latithorax (Strand). The three most commonly collected species were E. psychrophila, T. exasperans, and H. vexatrix, in that order. New distributional data from other arctic localities for the above-mentioned species are given. A. pilifrons is recorded for the first time from the Nearctic Region and is described and figured in detail.

In an earlier paper (1925, Trans. Am. Ent. Soc., LI, 184) brief reference was made to larvae of Platyptilia fragilis in the seed-capsules of Pentstemon cyananthus, one of the common perennials of the sagebrush association. The presence of the larvae in the seed-capsules while feeding is not apparent, although a large portion of the seeds contained therein are eaten.

The earliest use of the term Arctiidæ is referred by Dr. Packard to Leach (1815). This is antedated by Hübner's Tentamen terms, Hipocritæ and Hypercompæ. The latter is unavailable, as Hypercornpa becomes a synonym. I do not find any plural terms for the family before Hübner.

During the course of revisional studies of the tribe Larvaevorini, a number of undescribed species were received from outside sources. Rather than delay the return of specimens, and on the chance that the final revision will not be published for some time, the descriptions of these new forms are given below.

Juriniopsis aurifrons new species

Until the present only one species of Juriniopsis, adusta Wulp. (floridensis Tns.) has been recognized from the United States. The new species, which ranges in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah differs from adusta Wulp. in the following characters: female front tarsus slender (widened and flattened in adusta); male vertex 0.35 head width (0.27 head width in adusta); parafrontals subshining yellowish with yellowish or brownish-yellow pollen (subshining bluish-grey with greyish or yellowish-grey pollen in adusta), and in the structure of the genitalia.

Four new species of the genus Lygocoris Reuter, subgenus Neolygus Knight, are described: knighti and walleyi from Ontario; piceicola, from New Brunswick and Quebec; and atricallus from Ontario and Quebec. Male genitalia are illustrated, host plants are listed, and relationships to other species are discussed.

A recent study of the male genitalia of the Lycaenidae of North America, made while the author was attending the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., showed several interesting points, especially within the subfamily Lycaeniuae or “Coppers.”

Brightly shining, brown above, lighter ochraceous brown beneath, form more elongate and narrower than most of the fasciated species, such as P. varius and P. nitidus. Length 6.25 mm., breadth 1.75 mm.

One male of this species was collected in a light-trap on 28 June, 1967 at Chatterton, Hastings County, Ontario. This appears to be the first record of A. thibaulti Dyar and Knab in Canada.

The above family is of immense extent and attains, in the tropics, a considerable development in the size of its members, though not equalling in this respect its wood-eating neighbours, the Cerambycidæ. Towards the north, many groups fade out entirely and the large or gaily-coloured species decrease in number. Nevertheless, the representation in Canada is quite considerable, and since many of the species are closely allied and separate with some difficulty, while tables of genera are widely scattered, or, in many cases, not readily accessible, it has been deemed worth while to bring together the salient characters by means of which the collector in Eastern Canada may hope to identify his captures.

Previous to the present year noctuid moths were collected for breeding purposes and flight records, in various ways, entailing long hours spent in the field at night. The methods employed were variations of the old practice of “sugaring” and collecting from bloom. Fairly good results were obtained by systematic night collections, but it seemed desirable to devise a method whereby material might be secured in sufiicient quantities without so much night work. During the past winter the trap under discussion was designed and constructed as an experiment towards simplifying moth collections and flight records.

The reciprocal relations of flowers and insects form a subject which has attracted many workers since Darwin and others showed the importance of this phase of biology. In the whole field of adaptation we have no better materials than those afforded by the morphology of flowers and insects considered in their relation to each other. The field has been most exploited by botanists, but some entomologists have also made valuable contributions to the literature of this subject, and their assistance has always been necessary for the identification of visitors observed.
