Echthromorpha agrestoria pascuensis is described from Easter Island (Isla de Pascua). It is a rather melanic race of this extremely widespread species.

In the second paper of this series I have selected for discussion the nymphal stages of three species. The first of these is Paurocephala fremontiae F. D. Klyver, the adults of which are described in the preceding paper. The other species considered are Psylla pyricola Förster and P. mali Schdbg., both of which are of special interest because of their economic importance. The nymphal stages of neither species have been adequately figured nor described in detail.

The genus Hypophloeus contains a number of undescribed species but until the relation of certain forms as sexes has been established or disproved it is probably as well to refrain from describing species closely allied to parallelus.

The three following seem, however, to be so clearly distinct that they should be made known.

Some time ago, while in St. Louis, I called on Dr. Geo. W. Bock, and saw in his collection a remarkable specimen of a female Lucanuselaphus, from Popiar Bluff, Mo. On my expressing interest in the matter, the Doctor very kindly gave me the insect, and I wish to put the case on record.

A small robust species, length 1.5-2.5 mm.

Front of the male deeply concave, clothed with short bristle-like hairs, sparsely granulate-punctate, surface opaque, with a long, shining, median carina; second suture of the antennal club subtransverse. Pronotum wider than long, 5.5:3.5; sides slightly rounded, narrowing on the anterior half, constricted behind the anterior margin; the constriction extends across the dorsum, widening on the disk thereby simulating a wide, deep impression on the anterior third; anterior margin is broadly rounded; the surface is moderately clothed with short setae and the punctures are large, dense, and deep.

In July, 1959 I reared a polyembryonic encyrtid from a species of Lithocolletis attacking Alnus crispa (Ait.) Pursh in the lake region around Ohio, Nova Scotia. It represents a species and genus new to science.

Gibberella, new genus

Type species: Gibberella scutellata Miller, new species.

In a recent article Spencer records the Dermestid A. scrophulariae L. breeding in houses upon the dead hc'clies of the Cluster fly P. rudis Fab. A similar relationship between Dermestis lardarius L. and the dead adults of several species of Calliphoridae has twice come to the attention of the writer in Alberta.

In a recent revision of the genus Timema (Phasmatoptera: Timematodea) (Vickery 1993), an important reference inadvertently was omitted. It contained the following information on T. boharti Tinkham.

Rentz (1963) reported capturing a large series of T. boharti at Pinon Flats, Riverside County, California, during the latter part of April 1962. (The specimens were included in the revision of the genus.) The habitat is “xeric pinyon-juniper with chaparral intrusions”, at approximately 915 m. The series was taken at night. Rentz found mating pairs as well as last-instar numphs, some moulting. He noted that this species had previously been known only in a grey colour phase but there he found both greyish and green specimens with no intergrading. Mating pairs were segregated by colour. As noted in the revision (Vickery 1993), fading subsequent to death produced a brownish colour in all individuals so that detection of original colour is impossible.

Small numbers (147–388) of Olesicampe benefactor Hinz, a European ichneumonid parasite of the larch sawfly, Pristiphora erichsonii (Htg.), were released in Maine, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick in 1967. The parasite became established and has survived through two winters at five release points, and three winters on three release sites; on two sites the continued survival of the parasites is unconfirmed because of the collapse of the host population. O. benefactor is known to disperse slowly and even if it is successful in controlling the sawfly in the release areas, control over large areas may require releases at many locations.The subject of the range of host densities at which parasite releases should be made to ensure the greatest parasite production per parasite released, and hence the greatest chance of successful establishment, is discussed.

The results of a three year study of the imported parasites of Diprion polytomum show that an eulophid parasite, Microplectron fuscipennis Zett., gives promise of becoming an important control factor of the spruce sawfly in Canada. M. fuscipennis is widely distributed in Europe, and its habits there have been fully discussed by Morris and Cameron (1935) and by Ullyett (1936).

Topical application of thiotepa on the adult male spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana Clemens, at a concentration of 10 μg/insect resulted in 100% sterility. Unlike metepa, thiotepa did not have any apparent adverse effects on the competency of the sperms. Large numbers of male moths can be sterilized by allowing them to walk for 30 min on filter paper treated with a 2.5% solution of thiotepa in a 3:1 mixture of acetone and diffusion pump oil.

In the months of June and July the Red Pine (Pinus resinosa) and the white Pine (Pinus strobus) show by the exuding pitch that they are suffering from the attacks of an insect. The wounds occur on the main stem below, the insertion of the branch. On cutting into the bark the injury is found to be caused by a small larva, which, when full grown, measures 16 to 18 millimetres. The head is shining chestnut brown with black mandibles. The body is livid or blackish green, naked, with series of black dots, each dot giving rise to a single, rather stout, bristle.

The effect of certain monounsaturated dodecene and tetradecene acetates and alcohols on electroantennogram (EAG) response and pheromone-mediated trap catch was examined in male obliquebanded leafroller moths, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). The stimulation of antennae with 0.1 ng of (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:Ac), the major pheromone compound of this species, elicited an EAG response. The use of 1 ng of (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac) or (E)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (E9-14:Ac) or 10 ng of (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate (Z9-12:Ac) or (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate (E9-12:Ac) was required to elicit a response. One hundred nanograms of (E)-9-tetradecenol (E9-14:OH) were required to elicit a response from antennae. The stimulation of antennae with up to 100 ng of (Z)-9-tetradecenol (Z9-14:OH) did not elicit a response. The addition of 0.1 mg of Z9-12:Ac to 1 mg of synthetic C. rosaceana pheromone consisting of a 100:2:1.5:1 blend of Z11-14:Ac, (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-tetradecenol, and (Z)-11-tetradecenal reduced the capture of moths in pheromone-baited traps by more than 72%. Trap catch was reduced by more than 90% by the addition of 0.01 mg of Z9-14:Ac or E9-14:Ac to 1 mg of C. rosaceana pheromone. There was no detectable reduction in trap catch when 1 mg of E9-12:Ac, Z9-14:OH, or E9-14:OH was added to 1 mg of C. rosaceana pheromone. There was a greater than 95% reduction in trap catch when sources of Z9- or E9-12:Ac were mounted at the entrances to traps, 10 cm from the pheromone source. Trap catch was not affected by placing sources of Z9- or E9-14:Ac at trap entrances. Four 1 or 10 mg sources of E9-14:Ac placed 1 m from a trap did not affect the number of male C. rosaceana captured. The study demonstrates that although a compound may have profound attraction inhibiting activity when mixed directly with C. rosaceana pheromone, this activity may be lost if the inhibitor is emitted a short distance from the pheromone. The study also demonstrates that a potent attraction inhibitor such as E9-14:Ac does not repel C. rosaceana males and must be present along with pheromone to affect the behavior of this species.

This treatment of the Lauxaniidae occurring in a somewhat limited faunal area is offered as an introduction to a more extensive study of the group which I hope to undertake before very long. It is based on material in a number of private and institutional collections that have been available to me as well as on my own material collected during the last three summers at Abbotsford, Quebec. The list of species at the end of the paper includes all the available data on their distribution in Canada.

The generic placement of Tanypus pallens Coquillett, 1902 is changed to Conchapelopia s. str., with a redescription given of the male holotype. As a result Conchapelopia (s.s.) gonoides (Subi.) becomes a junior synonym of Conchapelopia (s.s.) pallens (Coq.). The status of Larsia pallens (Coq.) sensu Roback 1971 with its synonymies are discussed.

The occurrence of the genus Megamelus Fieb. in Canada and Alaska is reviewed. Seven species are shown to be present in the area and these are described, the genitalia illustrated and distribution documented: four species are recorded in Canada for the first time. It is shown that previous records of M. notula (Germ.), M. davisi (V-D.) and M. inflatus Metc. in Canada are in error.

The genus Catallagia Rothschild was considered to be strictly Nearctic until C. dacenkoi was described by Ioff in 1940 from the Altai Mountains of the U.S.S.R. In 1950, Skalon described two additional species, C. ioffi and C. striatus, from the Transbaikal and other areas of the U.S.S.R. All three of the Russian species are apparently parasitic upon mice, particularly of the genus Clethrionomys (=Evotomys).

Egg: Ovate in shape, bluish green in colour, the surface divided by reticulations into small hexagonal areas. Laid singly on the needles of host tree.

First Instar: Head width 0.23 mm. Body 2.0 mm. in length and 0.23 mm. in width Brownish green body with light brown head.

Second Instar: Head width 0.5 mm. Body 4.6 mm. in length and 0.5 mm. in width. Body lined alternately with green and light green stripes. Spiracular line greenish white. Head brownish green.
