Quite a number of our Coleoptera are known to associate in their imago or perfect state with the Formicariæ—comprehensively, ants. Very little, perhaps nothing, is known of the larval and pupal life of any of these beetle. Some, like Batrisus bistriatus, probably never leave the ants; but others, like the species of Cremastochilus, desert them in the spring, whether afterwards to return and propagate among them is an open question.

Genus Prochloridea B. & McD. This genus has been placed in the Heliothiinae but after a study of the genitalia of a male of madonna B. & L., which is probably only a form of the genotype, modesta B. & McD., I believe it should be either placed next or sunk to Rhizagrotis as the genitalia show an extraordinary similarity to those of cloanthoides Grt., the genotype. I have already commented on the position of Rhizagrotis in the “Canadian Entomologist”, 1927, page 64, and restricted it to the species cloanthoides Grt. and albalis Grt.; the structural details of these two species fit in very well with the characterization of Prochloridea.

Schistocerca gregaria possess four neurones of giant fibre proportions within the abdominal ventral nerve cord. These fibres arise from single cell bodies in the terminal ganglionic mass and pass without interruption to the metathoracic ganglion. Fibres become reduced in diameter when passing through a ganglion. Branching of the giant fibres occurs in abdominal ganglia 6 and 7.

It is strange that such a distinct genus as Aulacus should not have been recognized by American workers, but there seems to be no doubt that our Pammegischia Provancher, 1883 is merely Aulacus Jurine, 1807.

For many years chemists and entomologists have been seeking the hypothetical ideal insecticide, namely, a material which is toxic to insects at an economical dosage, which is not injurious to the host plant or animal sprayed or dusted with it, and which does not leave on foodstuffs a residue that is poisonous to man or domestic animals. Certain organic compounds approach closer to this ideal than any products of mineral origin, and the successful use of these against same of our most injurious insects has greatly stimulated the testing of countless organic products for insecticidal value.

In a series of papers (Vickery and Nagy 1973; Vickery et al. 1974; Vickery and Kevan 1983), 2 members of the genus Trimerotropis were considered to be subspecies, T. verrruculata verruculata (Kirby) and T. verruculata suffusa Scudder. This relationship was based in part on a statement by Hebard (1929) that 1 was sometimes mistaken for the other where the ranges meet. The former is widespread across the northern part of the continent from Newfoundland to British Columbia and north into the Northwest Territories. The latter is a western taxon, occurring from British Columbia southward into California. Helwig (1955) reported on genetic studies of hybrids between the 2. We made no careful study of the problem, but accepted that production of hybrids indicated a lack of reproductive isolation and therefore considered them as subspecies even though the work of Helwig (1955) indicated that the F, hybrids may be infertile.

In the writer's list of the Odonata of Ontario fifty species were recorded from the Kenora District of Ontario and only one from the Rainy River District. Thirty-five are reported from the vast northern part of the District known as the “Patricia Portion” and twenty-three from the southern part. The records from the Patricia portion are all from three widely separated localities but probably give a fair general picture of the odonate fauna of these northern latitudes. The records from the southern part of the District, on the other hand, are almost entirely from one locality, Minaki (approx. 50° N. Lat., 9° W. Long.) and are quite inadequate even for that one locality, some of the commonest regional species not being included.

A series of specimens of this genus from Churchill, Manitoba, includes males of piniphilus Esch., of heteronychus Fall, and of two species which are described below as new. I am unable to distinguish the females, all of which have each claw of each tarsus supplied with a broad basal tooth.

Two new species of aphids are described, Pleotrichophorus villosae new species from Chrysopsis villosa (Pursh) Nutt. in Manitoba, and Chaitophorus longiunguis new species from Salix sp. in Utah.

The larvae of the genus Zale, unlike typical phalaenid larvae, are long and slender, and taper anteriorly and posterioriy. The anterior pairs of abdominal prolegs are reduced in size, and the anal prolegs are usually extended behind the body. The species are closely related to those of the genus Cntocala, with which they should not be confused.

The nomenclature of the conifer-feeding species is that used by McDunnough (1943) in his revision of the obliqua-metatata group, and the species lineosa (Walker) is the species to which Morrison's names galbanata and penna are referable (Franklemont, 1950).

Ten insecticides, Bassa® [2-sec-butylphenyl N-methylcarbamate], Bioethanomethrin® [d-Trans ethano chrysanthemate of (5-benzyl-3-furyl) alcohol], carbaryl, diazinon, FMC 33297 [3-phenoxybenzyl (±) -cis-trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate], methamidophos, oxamyl, parathion, SD 41706 [cyclopropanecarboxylic acid, 2,2,3,3-tetramethyl-, alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl ester], SD 43775 [benzeneacetic acid, 4-chloro-alpha (1-methylethyl)-, cyano (3-phenoxyphenyl) methyl ester], were tested against grasshoppers (second-instar Melanoplus sanguinipes) to compare their contact toxicities and their persistence on treated vegetation.

SD 41706, SD 43775, and Bioethanomethrin were more toxic than all compounds previously tested in this laboratory against grasshoppers. All three showed some persistence on treated vegetation after 1 day but only SD 41706 and SD 43775 showed persisting toxic effects on treated vegetation 3 days after spraying at the rates tested.

The larva of Orygmophora mediofoveata Hampson is described. It has an unusual combination of features, including modifications of the spinneret, spiracles, thoracic and abdominal setae, and the tenth abdominal tergum. The most striking of these, the heavily armored anal plate, permits ready field identification.

Rogas malacosomatos n. sp. is described and differentiated from the closely related R. stigmator Say.

During the summer of 1938 the Royal Ontario Museum of Zoology, Toronto, organized an expedition to the little-known region of Favourable Lake, in the Patricia portion of the Kenora District, about 70 miles from the Manitoba boundary (53° 50' N. Lat., 93° 40' E. Long.). In 1939, two small parties were sent out by the Museum, one to Attawapiscat Lake, also in the Patricia country (52° 10' N. Lat., 88 E. Long.), and the other to various stations in the Cochrane District, from Cochrane northward to Moosonee on James Bay.

A pilot-scale industrial microwave unit operating at 2450 MHz was used to test whether microwave treatment can control Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) populations infesting stored rye, Secale cereale L. (Poaceae). Tests were performed in samples of rye (50 g) with 14%, 16%, or 18% moisture content. Samples containing T. castaneum eggs, larvae, pupae, or adults were exposed to 200, 300, 400, or 500 W for periods of 28 or 56 s, resulting in final surface temperatures ranging from 47.2 to 83.9 °C. Eggs were most vulnerable; adults were least vulnerable. Subsequent tests showed that microwaves reduced rye germination and flour yield. No effect of treatment on grain protein content, falling number, sodium dodecyl sulfate sedimentation volume, mixograph and farinograph dough development times, or baking properties was detected.

William E. Leach, and not Frederick Smith, Ernest André has it, was the first to establish the family Mutillidœ but none of these gentlemen correctly defined it, and all have included genera which do not belong to it. Some of the genera belong to the Bethylidœ, one belongs to the Thynnidœ, one to the Cosilidœ, and others to the Myrmosidœ.
