In this note we partially answer a question of Cascales, Orihuela and Tkachuk [‘Domination by second countable spaces and Lindelöf ${\rm\Sigma}$-property’, Topology Appl.158(2) (2011), 204–214] by proving that under $CH$ a compact space $X$ is metrisable provided $X^{2}\setminus {\rm\Delta}$ can be covered by a family of compact sets $\{K_{f}:f\in {\it\omega}^{{\it\omega}}\}$ such that $K_{f}\subset K_{h}$ whenever $f\leq h$ coordinatewise.

We consider tensor product operators and discuss their best constants in preservation inequalities concerning the usual moduli of continuity. In a previous paper, we obtained lower and upper bounds on such constants, under fairly general assumptions on the operators. Here, we concentrate on the l∞-modulus of continuity and three celebrated families of operators. For the tensor product of k identical copies of the Bernstein operator Bn, we show that the best uniform constant coincides with the dimension k when k ≥ 3, while, in case k = 2, it lies in the interval [2, 5/2] but depends upon n. Similar results also hold when Bn is replaced by a univariate Szász or Baskakov operator. The three proofs follow the same pattern, a crucial ingredient being some special properties of the probability distributions involved in the mentioned operators, namely: the binomial, Poisson, and negative binomial distributions.

The abstract concept of an elementary operator was recently introduced and studied by other authors. In this paper, we describe the general form of elementary operators between standard subalgebras of 𝒥-subspace lattice algebras. The result can apply to atomic Boolean subspace lattice algebras and pentagon subspace lattice algebras.

In this paper, we tire concerned with duality of a multiobjective fractional program. Two different dual problems are introduced with respect to the primal multiobjective fractional program. Under a mild assumption, we prove a weak duality theorem and a strong duality theorem for each type of duality. Finally, we explore some relations between these two types of duality.

A ring in which every accessible subring is an ideal is called filial. We continue the study of commutative reduced filial rings started in [R. R. Andruszkiewicz and K. Pryszczepko, ‘A classification of commutative reduced filial rings’, Comm. Algebra to appear]. In particular we describe the Noetherian commutative reduced rings and construct nontrivial examples of commutative reduced filial rings without ideals which are domains.

We study the following questions. Which finite Blaschke products are eigenvectors of the composition operators Tu: f ↦ f ∘ u, what are the possible eigenvalues, and which pairs (B, C) of finite Blaschke products commute (that is, satisfy B ∘ C = C ∘ B).

Three families of examples are given of sets of $(0,1)$-matrices whose pairwise products form a basis for the underlying full matrix algebra. In the first two families, the elements have rank at most two and some of the products can have multiple entries. In the third example, the matrices have equal rank $\!\sqrt{n}$ and all of the pairwise products are single-entried $(0,1)$-matrices.

Let f:ℝ→ℝ be a locally integrable function of bounded lower oscillation. The paper contains the proofs of sharp strong-type, weak-type and exponential estimates for the mean oscillation of f. In particular, this yields the precise value of the norm of the embedding BLO⊂BMOp, 1≤p<∞. Higher-dimensional analogues for anisotropic BLO spaces are also established.

We present a unified treatment of the band circulant matrices which occur in the periodic spline and histospline projection theory with equispaced knots. Explicit bounds for the norm of these matrices are given.

A method of embedding nk configurations into projective space of k–1 dimensions is given. It breaks into the easy problem of finding a rooted spanning tree of the associated Levi graph. Also it is shown how to obtain a “complementary” “theorem” about projective space (over a field or skew-field F) from any nk theorem over F. Some elementary matroid theory is used, but with an explanation suitable for most people. Various examples are mentioned, including the planar configurations: Fano 73, Pappus 93, Desargues 103 (also in 3d-space), Möbius 84 (in 3d-space), and the resulting 74 in 3d-space, 96 in 5d-space, and 107 in 6d-space. (The Möbius configuration is self-complementary.) There are some nk configurations that are not embeddable in certain projective spaces, and these will be taken to similarly not embeddable configurations by complementation. Finally, there is a list of open questions.

In this paper, we investigate the two-dimensional shrinking target problem in beta-dynamical systems. We present several results related to the recently introduced generalised Bernoulli polynomials. Some recurrence relations are given, which permit us to compute efficiently the polynomials in question. The sums , where jk = jk (α) are the zeros of the Bessel function of the first kind of order α, are evaluated in terms of these polynomials. We also study a generalisation of the series appearing in the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula.

Let Σ be a set and σ be a positive function on Σ. We introduce and study a locally convex topology β1(Σ,σ) on the space ℓ1(Σ,σ) such that the strong dual of (ℓ1(Σ,σ),β1(Σ,σ)) can be identified with the Banach space . We also show that, except for the case where Σ is finite, there are infinitely many such locally convex topologies on ℓ1(Σ,σ). Finally, we investigate some other properties of the locally convex space (ℓ1(Σ,σ),β1(Σ,σ)) , and as an application, we answer partially a question raised by A. I. Singh [‘L∞0(G)* as the second dual of the group algebra L1 (G) with a locally convex topology’, Michigan Math. J.46 (1999), 143–150].

Let q≥2 and N≥1 be integers. W. Zhang recently proved that for any fixed ε>0 and qε≤N≤q1/2−ε, where the sum is taken over all nonprincipal characters χ modulo q, L(1,χ) denotes the L-functions corresponding to χ, and αq=qo(1) is some explicit function of q. Here we improve this result and show that the same asymptotic formula holds in the essentially full range qε≤N≤q1−ε.
