It is well known that non-zero nilpotent ideals in amenable Banach algebras must be infinite-dimensional. We show that under certain additional hypotheses such ideals cannot even have the approximation property.

A multivariate semi-orthogonal frame multiresolution analysis with a general integer dilation matrix and multiple scaling functions is considered. We first derive the formulas of the lengths of the inital (central) shift-invariant space V0 and the next dilation space V1, and, using these formulas, we then address the problem of the number of the elements of a wavelet set, that is, the length of the shift-invariant space W0 := V1 ⊖ V0. Finally, we show that there does not exist a ‘genuine’ frame multiresolution analysis for which V0 and V1 are quasi-stable spaces satisfying the usual length condition.

Let G = H0 > H1 > … > Hr = 1 and G = K0 > K1 > … > Kr =1 be two chief series of the finite soluble group G. Suppose Mi complements Hi/Hi+1. Then Mi also complements precisely one factor Kj/Kj+1, of the second series, and this Kj/Kj+1 is G-isomorphic to Hi/Hi+1. It is shown that complements Mi can be chosen for the complemented factors Hi/Hi+1 of the first series in such a way that distinct Mi complement distinct factors of the second series, thus establishing a one-to-one correspondence between the complemented factors of the two series. It is also shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the factors of the two series (but not in general constructible in the above manner), such that corresponding factors are G-isomorphic and have the same number of complements.

The main object of this paper is to identify various classes of analytic functions which are starlike, convex, pre-starlike, Ruscheweyh class of order α, β-spiral-like, β-convex-spiral-like, starlike of complex order, complex of complex order, and others as special cases of a family of analytic functions of complex order in the unit disk. This makes a uniform treatment possible. Finally, we derive sharp estimates for all coefficients of the functions from the family.

We show that if $M\,\bar{\rtimes }_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ has the weak Haagerup property, then both $M$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ have the weak Haagerup property, and if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ is an amenable group, then the weak Haagerup property of $M$ implies that of $M\,\bar{\rtimes }_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$. We also give a condition under which the weak Haagerup property for $M$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ implies that of $M\,\bar{\rtimes }_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$.

Let φ denote the normalised surface measure on the unit sphere Sn−1. We shall be interested in the weighted Lp estimate for Stein's maximal function Mφf, namely

where w is an Ap weight, especially for 1 < p ≤ 2. Using the Mellin transformation approach, we prove that the estimate holds for every weight wδ where w ∈ Ap and 0 ≤ δ < (p(n − 1) − n)/(n(p − 1)), for n ≥ 3 and n/(n − 1) < p ≤ 2.

Let F be a multifunction from [a, b] × ℝn × ℝn into ℝn, with non-empty closed convex values. In this paper we prove that, under suitable assumptions, the multivalued boundary value problem

has at least one solution u ∈ W2, p([a, b], ℝn). Next we point out some particular cases.

The (logarithmic) capacity or transfinite diameter is originally defined for compact sets in the complex plane. An extension may be made by defining the capacity of a given arbitrary set in the plane as the supremum of the capacities of all compact sets contained in the given set. Convergence in capacity is defined analogously to convergence in measure. It is shown in this paper that properties of convergence in capacity are also analogous to those of convergence in measure.

Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, we consider the equation and we describe all its solutions. Moreover, we prove that this equation has no solution (x,y,m,n) when n>3 is an odd prime and y is not the sum of two consecutive squares. This extends the work of Tengely [On the diophantine equation x2+q2m=2yp, Acta Arith.127(1) (2007), 71–86].

We introduce a method named homogeneous PBW deformation that preserves the regularity and some other homological properties for multigraded algebras. The method is used to produce Artin–Schelter regular algebras without the hypothesis on grading.

We investigate which numbers are expressible as differences of two conjugate algebraic integers. Our first main result shows that a cubic, whose minimal polynomial over the field of rational numbers has the form x3 + px + q, can be written in such a way if p is divisible by 9. We also prove that every root of an integer is a difference of two conjugate algebraic integers, and, more generally, so is every algebraic integer whose minimal polynomial is of the form f (xe) with an integer e ≥ 2.

Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for certain classes of eventually regular semigroups to the group-bound or even periodic.

Let G be a graph of order n. Let a, b and k be nonnegative integers such that 1≤a≤b. A graph G is called an (a,b,k)-critical graph if after deleting any k vertices of G the remaining graph of G has an [a,b]-factor. We provide a sufficient condition for a graph to be (a,b,k)-critical that extends a well-known sufficient condition for the existence of a k-factor.

Boyle and Goodearl proved that if R is a left V-ring then R has left Krull dimension if and only if R is left Neotherian. In this paper we extend this result to arbitrary V-modules.

A subgroup $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}H$ of a finite group $G$ is said to be S-semipermutable in $G$ if $H$ permutes with every Sylow $q$-subgroup of $G$ for all primes $q$ not dividing $|H |$. A finite group $G$ is an MS-group if the maximal subgroups of all the Sylow subgroups of $G$ are S-semipermutable in $G$. The aim of the present paper is to characterise the finite MS-groups.

For a random normed space of mappings into a separable normed linear space, convergence of identically distributed elements in i the random norm (norm distribution) is shown to be equivalent to convergence in measure in the weak linear topology. Convergence in measure in each coordinate of a Schauder basis is also shown to be a necessary and sufficient condition for convergence in the random norm topology. These results have laws of large numbers for random elements in separable normed linear spaces as almost immediate corollaries and illustrate some of the recently obtained laws of large numbers for random elements. Similar results are also given for elements which need not have the same norm distributions, and the results are extended to linear metric spaces. Finally, applications of the results to stochastic processes are considered.

We prove the following theorem: if G is a locally compact Hausdorff group such that each of its proper closed subgroups has only a finite number of closed subgroups, then G is topologically isomorphic to the circle group.
