In this paper we consider two spectral refinement schemes, elementary and double iteration, for the approximation of eigenelements of a compact operator using a new approximating operator. We show that the new method performs better than the Galerkin, projection and Sloan methods. We obtain precise orders of convergence for the approximation of eigenelements of an integral operator with a smooth kernel using either the orthogonal projection onto a spline space or the interpolatory projection at Gauss points onto a discontinuous piecewise polynomial space. We show that in the double iteration scheme the error for the eigenvalue iterates using the new method is of the order of , where h is the mesh of the partition and k = 0, 1, 2,… denotes the step of the iteration. This order of convergence is to be compared with the orders in the Galerkin and projection methods and in the Sloan method. The error in eigenvector iterates is shown to be of the order of in the new method, in the Galerkin and projection methods and in the Sloan method. Similar improvement is observed in the case of the elementary iteration. We show that these orders of convergence are preserved in the corresponding discrete methods obtained by replacing the integration by a numerical quadrature formula. We illustrate this improvement in the order of convergence by numerical examples.

The problem of determining a square integrable function from its modulus and that of its Fourier transform has been considered in an article by Corbett and Hurst ([1]). In this work we point out an error in one of the main results of the cited article concerning the Pauli uniqueness of real states, provide a proof of uniqueness for non-negative states, and present various related examples and discussion of the problem.

The local properties of non-linear differential-difference equations are investigated by considering the location of the roots of the eigen-equation derived from the lineraised approximation of the original model. A general linear system incorporating one time delay is considered and local stability results are obtained for cases in which the coefficient matrices satisfy certain assumptions. The results have applications to recent Biological and Economic models incorporating time lags.

A quasi-trapezoid inequality is derived for double integrals that strengthens considerably existing results. A consonant version of the Grüss inequality is also derived. Applications are made to cubature formulæ and the error variance of a stationary variogram.

Tensor identities for finite dimensional representations of arbitrary semi-simple Lie algebras are derived and are applied to the construction of left-projection operators which project out the shift components of tensor operators from the left. The corresponding adjoint identities are also derived and are used for the construction of right-projection operators. It is also shown that, on a finite dimensional irreducible representation, these identities may be considerably reduced. Commutation relations between the shift tensors of a tensor operator are also computed in terms of the roots appearing in the tensor identities.

This paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a Kuhn-Tucker point of a non-smooth vector optimisation problem subject to inequality and equality constraints to be an efficient solution. The main tool we use is an alternative theorem which is quite different to a corresponding result by Xu.

We consider a two-layer fluid of finite depth with a free surface and, in particular, the surface tension at the free surface and the interface. The usual assumptions of a linearized theory are considered. The objective of this work is to analyse the effect of surface tension on trapped modes, when a horizontal circular cylinder is submerged in either of the layers of a two-layer fluid. By setting up boundary value problems for both of the layers, we find the frequencies for which trapped waves exist. Then, we numerically analyse the effect of variation of surface tension parameters on the trapped modes, and conclude that realistic changes in surface tension do not have a significant effect on the frequencies of these.

Exact wave-height solutions are presented for trapped waves over two new three-parameter depth topographies. Dispersive properties are calculated for both a semi-infinite and a truncated convex exponential profile, as well as for a semi-infinite concave profile. The analysis in all three cases is general in that both horizontal divergence and rotational effects are included. These solutions may be used for either high-frequency edge wave or low-frequency shelf wave studies by taking appropriate limits (f → 0 for edge wave and ε = f2L2/gH ≪ 1 for shelf waves).

In this article, we use the method of Foias and Temam to show that the strong solutions of the time-dependent magnetohydrodynamics equations in a periodic domain are analytic in time with values in a Gevrey class of functions. As immediate corollaries we find that the solutions are analytic in Hr-norms and that the solutions become smooth immediately after the initial time.

We propose and analyse an alternate approach to a priori error estimates for the semidiscrete Galerkin approximation to a time-dependent parabolic integro-differential equation with nonsmooth initial data. The method is based on energy arguments combined with repeated use of time integration, but without using parabolic-type duality techniques. An optimal $L^2$-error estimate is derived for the semidiscrete approximation when the initial data is in $L^2$. A superconvergence result is obtained and then used to prove a maximum norm estimate for parabolic integro-differential equations defined on a two-dimensional bounded domain.

This paper presents a numerical investigation of plaque growth in a diseased artery using the two-way fluid–structural interaction (FSI) technique. An axis-asymmetric 45% stenosis model is used as the base model to start the plaque growth approximation. The blood is modelled as a non-Newtonian fluid described by the Casson model. The artery tissue is assumed to be a nonlinear material. The two-way FSI simulation is carried out in a way that mimics the unsteady blood flow through a diseased artery by using a pulsatile flow condition. After each flow velocity cycle, the numerical results are extracted and used to modify the stenosis geometry based upon critical wall shear stress (WSS) values and an accepted relationship between the concentration of low density lipoprotein and WSS. The simulation procedure is repeated until the growth-updated stenosis morphology reaches 79% severity. The behaviour of the flow velocity is analysed at each growth stage, together with the WSS, to determine the change of plaque morphology due to growth. The effects of WSS and pressure on the artery wall at the final stage (79% severity) of the plaque growth model are also compared with results from the authors’ previous work, to demonstrate the importance of the morphology change in plaque growth modelling.

We consider an age-structured population model achieved by modifying the classical Sharpe-Lotka-McKendrick model, incorporating an overcrowding effect or competition for resources term. This term depends on the whole population rather than on any specific age group, in the case of overcrowding or limitation of resources. We investigate the solutions for arbitrary initial conditions. We consider the existence of a steady age distribution and its stability and are able to determine this for a simple illustrative case. If the non-trivial steady age distribution is unstable, there is a critical initial population size beyond which the population explodes. This watershed is independent of the shape of the initial age distribution.

The algebraic structure of relativistic wave equations of the form

is considered. This leads to the problem of finding all Lie algebras L which contain the Lorentz Lie algebra so(3, 1) and also contain a “four-vector” αμ a such an L gives rise to a family of wave equations. The simplest possibility is the Bhabha equations where L≅so(5). Some authors have claimed that this is the only one, but it is shown that there are many other possibilities still in accord with physical requirements. Known facts about representations, along with Dynkin's theory of the embeddings of Lie algebras, are used to obtain a partial classification of wave equations. The discrete transformations C, P, T are also discussed, along with reality properties. Finally, a simple example of a family of wave equations based on L = sp(12) is considered in detail. The so(3, 1) content and mass spectra are given for the low order members of the family, and the problem of causality is briefly discussed.

We propose a locally smoothing method for some mathematical programs with complementarity constraints, which only incurs a local perturbation on these constraints. For the approximate problem obtained from the smoothing method, we show that the Mangasarian–Fromovitz constraints qualification holds under certain conditions. We also analyse the convergence behaviour of the smoothing method, and present some sufficient conditions such that an accumulation point of a sequence of stationary points for the approximate problems is a C-stationary point, an M-stationary point or a strongly stationary point. Numerical experiments are employed to test the performance of the algorithm developed. The results obtained demonstrate that our algorithm is much more promising than the similar ones in the literature.

The endemicity of infectious diseases is investigated from a deterministic viewpoint. Sustained oscillation of infectives is often due to seasonal effects which may be related to climatic changes. For example the transmission of the measles virus by droplets is enhanced in cooler, more humid seasons. In many countries the onset of cooler, more humid weather coincides with the increased aggregation of people and the seasonal effect can be exacerbated. In this paper we consider non-autonomous compartmental epidemiological models and demonstrate that the critical community size phenomenon may be associated with the seasonal variation in the disease propagation. This approach is applicable to both the prevaccination phenomenon of critical community size and the current goal of worldwide elimination of measles by vaccination.

In this paper, we consider the existence of a family of periodic solutions of large amplitude when a pair of eigenvalues of the linear part of a first-order system of ordinary differential equations crosses the imaginary axis. We refer to this problem as a Hopf bifurcation problem at infinity. In our work, the nonlinearities may be discontinuous at the origin, and the proof of existence of periodic solutions is arrived at through the corresponding system of integral equations. The applicability of the result is demonstrated by the study of the dynamics of a train truck wheelset system.

Mollusc seashells grow through the local deposition and calcification of material at the shell opening by a soft and thin organ called the mantle. Through this process, a huge variety of shell structures are formed. Previous models have shown that these structural patterns can largely be understood by examining the mechanical interaction between the deformable mantle and the rigid shell aperture to which it adheres. In this paper we extend this modelling framework in two distinct directions. For one, we incorporate a mechanical feedback in the growth of the mollusc. Second, we develop an initial framework to couple the two primary and orthogonal modes of pattern formation in shells, which are termed antimarginal and commarginal ornamentation. In both cases we examine the change in shell morphology that occurs due to the different mechanical influences and evaluate the hypotheses in light of the fossil record.

In this paper, the results of Freedman and So [13] on global stability and persistence of simple food chains are extended to general diffusive food chains. For global stability of the unique homogeneous positive steady state, our approach involves an application of the invariance principle of reaction-diffusion equations and the construction of a Liapunov functional. For persistence, we use the dynamical system results of Dunbar et al. [11] and Hutson and Moran [29].

In this paper, we investigate computable lower bounds for the best strongly ergodic rate of convergence of the transient probability distribution to the stationary distribution for stochastically monotone continuous-time Markov chains and reversible continuous-time Markov chains, using a drift function and the expectation of the first hitting time on some state. We apply these results to birth–death processes, branching processes and population processes.
