Excessive sedimentation of fine particles on stream beds has been recognized as a major threat to running-water ecosystems. Deposition of fine sediments often affects hyporheic zone (HZ) functioning by (1) reducing hydrological exchanges at the water–sediment interface and by (2) increasing the organic matter (OM) content of surface sediments. These two factors usually occur concurrently to control biogeochemical processes in sediments. In the present study, experimental and modelling approaches were coupled to evaluate the contribution of these factors on the biogeochemical functioning of the HZ. We used a one-dimensional (1D) vertical model taking into account the hydrodynamic properties, the vertical distribution of the OM and the main microbial processes involved in OM processing (aerobic respiration, denitrification, nitrification and sulphate reduction). This Mobile-Immobile Model for Organic Matter (MIM-OM) model was calibrated and validated using experimental data (conservative tracer, dissolved oxygen and nitrate concentrations) obtained in filtration columns filled with a porous sedimentary matrix. Simulations showed that organic carbon content and Darcy velocity acted in concert to shape biogeochemical processes in stream sediments. The use of the MIM-OM model on data obtained in filtration columns impacted by fine sediment deposition indicated that the biodegradability of the OM (modified through the degradation parameter kPOC) also played a key role on biogeochemical processes occurring in sediments. In conclusion, the MIM-OM model appears as an efficient simulation tool to evaluate biogeochemical functioning in river sediments under different conditions (granulometry, quality of surface water and clogging).

500 alevins vésiculés sont introduits dans des graviers d'un ruisseau artificiel. A partir de l'émergence, l'activité de certains alevins est enregistrée quotidiennement pendant 30 minutes.

L'essentiel de cette activité précoce se traduit par un comportement de nage contre le courant pour maintenir une position stable. Au début, ce comportement de nage statique est effectué en séquences brèves. Ensuite, les alevins exécutent des séquences de nage statique de plus en plus longues et de moins en moins nombreuses. Le comportement de nage statique précède le comportement territorial.

De 1973 à 1975 des alevins de Saumon atlantique (Salmo salar L.) ont été déversés en fin de résorption de vésicule dans quatre affluents du Scorff, rivière de Bretagne-Sud. Dans le même temps, les milieux d'alevinage ont été aménagés : création de profonds et enlèvement des populations de truites et d'anguilles.

Les densités et les tailles moyennes automnales des saumons ont varié selon les ruisseaux et les années de 1,3 à 16 ind./100 m2 pour la classe d'âge 0+ (52 à 107 mm) et de 0,6 à 6,9 ind./100 m2 pour celle des 1+ (114 à 150 mm). La production en migrants (observée sur une année et un ruisseau) reste faible et est composée de juvéniles parrs et smolts âgés de 1 et 2 ans.

La densité d'alevinage en relation avec l'habitat, la suppression des populations de truites et d'anguilles et l'aménagement du milieu influent sur la densité et la survie automnales des 0+. Les actions individuelle et synergique de ces facteurs sur la production sont discutées.

Une liste de «46» espèces de Chironomidés récoltées pour la première fois en France continentale est présentée. La moitié (22) proviennent des zones potamiques des fleuves Loire et Rhône. Des corrections et des compléments de répartition sont apportés au premier bilan faunistique (Serra-Tosio & Laville 1991). Huit genres Hayesomyia, Dratnalia, Euryhapsis, Gillotia, Kloosia, Lipiniella, Robackia, Saetheria et un sous-genre Demieryptochironomus (Irmakia) sont signalés en France pour la première fois. Ces nouvelles récoltes (+ Parachironomus mauricii et Pseudomittia gracilis), portent à 646 les espèces de Chironomidés actuellement recensées sur le territoire français. Cela correspond à la moitié de la faune chironomidienne paléarctique connue.

This study employs histological procedure to elucidate the natural cycles of gonadal development in a population of E. radiata in the Cross River, Nigeria. The cycles of condition indices and shell-free dry mass follow a general pattern in which they increased with the sexual maturity of the species till a peak is reached in June when spawning begins. Then there is a gradual decline, as the spawning event progresses, till a minimum is obtained in October when the animal is spent. Thus, the species spawns once in a year during the peak of the rainy season (June to October). The timing of spawning is such that the young larvae stand to profit from the high plankton biomass during the ensuing dry season months.

Les auteurs donnent une liste de 17 espèces complémentaires à l'inventaire faunitique des Chironomides de Camargue ainsi que les périodes de vol, observées sur deux années, des 46 espèces qui y ont été récoltées jusqu'à ce jour. Ils donnent également un premier relevé faunistique comprenant 29 noms de Chironomides capturés en Andalousie, ainsi que leur période de vol. L'espèce Tangtarsus est nouvelle pou le continent européen.

La végétation bryophytique du Fluvià, fleuve méditerranéen à bassin calcaire, a été étudié. 19 espèces aquatiques (submergées) et 27 espèces hygrophiles (entre 0 et 20 cm au dessus du niveau de l'eau) ont été trouvées. Les premières suivent une distribution zonale, qui a permis de diviser la rivière en trois secteurs : le cours supérieur, dominé par Barbula ehrenbergii, le cours moyen, dominé par Rhynchostegium riparioides et le cours inférieur, qui constitue le domaine des phanérogames aquatiques du genre Potamogeton. Les espèces hygrophyles, au contraire, se distribuent plus régulièrement tout au long de la rivière.

Für die Art Isoperla grammatica Poda, 1761 wird ein Neotypus beschrieben. Die Männchen dieser Art sind sowohl durch ihre Trommelzeichen als auch durch die Strukturen des Aedeagus zu erkennen, die Weibchen können über die Strukturen der Vagina bestimmt werden. Die Art wurde bisher in den Alpen (an der Drau) und in den Pyrineen (Pyrénées Orientales) gefunden.

Des populations de Cladocères et de Copépodes ont été étudiées dans trois étangs piscicoles dont un lors de sa remise en eau après une année de culture en assec. Les caractères physico-chimiques du biotope varient avec une certaine régularité en fonction des facteurs climatiques. Plusieurs associations de Cladocères et Copépodes se succèdent pendant une période annuelle de mise en eau. Le vieillissement de l'étang par rapport à son dernier assec se traduit par une modification de la structure du peuplement en Crustacés. Certaines espèces consommées par les Carpes présentent une écophase benthique leur permettant de résister à l'assèchement, au labour et à la culture du sol de l'étang; elles assurent un peuplement rapide lors de la remise en eau.

The generic diagnosis of Euryhapsis Oliver and the description of E. cilium Oliver are augmented. E. fuscipropessp.n. is described as male imago and shown to be close to E. cilium. The systematic position of the genera related toBrillia Kieffer and Eurycnemus van der Wulp is discussed. A review and a key to male and female imagines of generaof the Brillia group with single gonostyli are given. The generic diagnoses of the genera Irisobrillia Oliver, TokyobrilliaKobayashi & Sasa, and Pseudobrillia Niitsuma are augmented or emended. The description of the female imago of T. longicosta Oliver is augmented. T. anderseni sp. n. from Tanzania is described as male and female imago, the description of the male imago of I. Tamamegaseta augmented and the female described. The description of the male imago of P. komorii Niitsuma is augmented.

L'interdépendance de la lumière et de la température est étudiée en milieu fini et en conditions nutritives non limitantessur des cultures monospécifiques non axéniques de quatre espèces : Fragilaria crotonensis, Anabaena macrospora,Staurastrum pingue et Coelastrum cambricum. Les taux de croissance maximum sont respectivement de 0.57, 0.63, 0.77et 1.4.j-1, associés à des températures de 25, 25, 27 et 35° C et des lumières optimales de 150, 170, 270 et 290 µE.m-2.s-1.Ces résultats obtenus, dans une plage de température 10-35° C et pour des lumières comprises entre 5 et 800 µE.m-2.s-1, sous une photopériode de 15/9, sont ajustés par des modèles.

We characterized phytoplankton community succession at different depths of a shallow hypertrophic reservoir in relation to physical and chemical environmental variables. The phytoplankton community was sampled biweekly at three different water depths (surface, middle and bottom) in the reservoir from November 2002 to February 2004. A range of 18 environmental variables including temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) were measured to assess their influence on phytoplankton community succession. As well, combined multivariate analyses with a cluster analysis and a nonmetric multidimensional scale (NMDS) were conducted. Microcystis aeruginosa was the dominant species in all seasons except spring. Thus, Cyanophyceae was a dominant taxonomic group. In spring, Bacillariophyceae dominated, followed by Cryptophyceae and Chlorophyceae. The succession was relatively delayed at the middle and bottom layers compared with at the surface layer. Abundance and species richness of phytoplankton were also higher in the surface layer than in the bottom layer. Cluster analysis classified the phytoplankton community into four clusters at each depth, and the changes were also well reflected in the NMDS ordination. Each cluster showed seasonal patterns characterized by indicator species, as well as environmental variables such as temperature, conductivity, and nutrients including N and P. Seasonal dynamics of the phytoplankton community was the strongest at the surface layer and weakest at the bottom layer. These depth-variable environmental variables are likely to be the key factors driving changes in the phytoplankton community composition.

The rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus often occurs simultaneously with the cladoceran Moina macrocopa in tropical water bodies. We studied the effects of temperature (20, 25 and 30°C) and algal density (0.5, 1.0 and 3.0×106 cells.mL−1Scenedesmus obliquus) on the outcome of competition and duration of coexistence between B. calyciflorus and M. macrocopa using population growth experiments. The results showed that regardless of temperature, M. macrocopa outcompeted B. calyciflorus at the lowest algal density (0.5×106 cells.mL−1), whereas B. calyciflorus outcompeted M. macrocopa at the higher algal densities (1.0 and 3.0×106 cells.mL−1). The duration of coexistence shortened with increasing temperature when M. macrocopa outcompeted B. calyciflorus, and those with increasing temperature and algal density when B. calyciflorus outcompeted M. macrocopa. Our results suggested that the competitive outcome between the rotifer B. calyciflorus and the cladoceran M. macrocopa was dependent on algal density but not temperature, the duration of coexistence between them was dependent on algal density and temperature, and the exploitative competition of M. macrocopa over B. calyciflorus may be more important than the interference competition.

Cette étude de la flore diatomique subfossile dulçaquicole de la Grande Terre (Iles Kerguelen) a été réalisée à partir de six prélèvementseffectués sur des dépôts tourbeux mis à jour après le retrait du Glacier Ampère, à l'ouest de l'archipel. Au total, 107taxons de diatomées (84 espèces, 22 variétés et 1 forme) ont été observés. On constate une grande similitude entre cette floresubfossile, datant d'environ 1000, 5000 ou 10000 ans BP, et la flore diatomique actuelle des Iles Kerguelen. La biogéographiede cette flore et les similitudes avec la flore d'autres îles antarctiques sont brièvement discutées.

Rhyacophila tristis Pictet a été étudiée durant 3 années consécutives dans un ruisseau pyrénéen (altitude 1 930 m — température maximum 17° C en août — couvert de neige 4-6 mois par an).Les larves sont essentiellement carnivores et se nourrissent surtout de chironomidae. Le développement larvaire dure 2 ans. La croissance s'effectue surtout en période déneigée. Entre le 1er et le 2e hiver de vie larvaire, l'accroissement (en poids sec) fut en moyenne de 2,25 % j-1. Durant cette période, 1,6 % des larves disparaissaient en moyenne chaque jour. Les taux instantanés de croissance et de mortalité demeurent voisins d'une génération à la suivante. La production a été estimée à 240 mg m-2 an -1. Le rapport Production/Biomasse moyenne annuelle = 3,1.

The wetlands found in the Brazilian Cerrado are poorly studied environments regarding ecological aspects. Assessing the diversity of aquatic invertebrates in wetlands is a challenging task, since there are no standard sampling methods that minimize the spatial effects caused by macrophytes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a new sampling method for assessing Cladocera richness in macrophyte-rich wetlands of Brazilian Cerrado. In six wetlands, one transect was established which corresponded to a gradient of depth or change in aquatic vegetation. Samples containing cladocerans were collected using plankton net dragged among aquatic vegetation in the dry and rainy seasons. The species accumulation curves using non-parametric estimators and the overestimation of richness were used to determine the sampling efficiency. The species accumulation curves showed different asymptotic trends regarding the season and wetland studied. Especially in the rainy season, an asymptotic trend was not observed in two of the wetlands studied, which may reflect the influence of seasonality on Cladocera assemblage. Nevertheless, the overestimation of species richness showed that the method of sampling was able to find more than 60% of the estimated species richness, regardless of season or wetland studied. These results indicate that the method employed for sampling Cladocera in the Cerrado wetlands can be considered adequate.

Leaf breakdown rates of two species of elm (Ulmus) and two of maple (Acer) were investigated in two low orderstreams located in Western Maryland, U.S.A., and in Northern Appenins, Italy. Within each genus of leaf, one specieswas Italian and one was American. The role of macroinvertebrate shredders in leaf processing was also investigated. In both streams within the same genus of leaf the Italian leaves disappeared faster than the American leaves. Within the same species, the leaves were decomposed more rapidly in the Italian stream. Shredder biomass was always significantly higher on the leaves retrieved from the Italian stream suggesting that shredders had an important role in detritus processing. On the contrary, the comparison between leaf species showed a poor correlation between shredder biomass and leaf breakdown rate. Three hypotheses are proposed. The fact that native leaves were not processed at a faster rate, compared to the exotic leaves, support the notion that shredders do not specialize on litter of a given leaf species, but rather on appropriately conditioned leaf litter regardless of the species. Breakdown rates followed the same rank ordering in each stream : Acer pseudoplatanus > Ulmus minor > Ulmus americana > Acer rubrum indicating the existence of the same hierarchy in the availability of food to macroinvertebrates throughout the year.

Dans ce milieu bien particulier que constituent les rochers suintants, 235 espèces et variétés ont été recensées. Les Diatomées constituent à elles seules 84 % des populations algales ; deux nouvelles variétés ont été décrites : Fragilaria vaucheriae var. Villereti et Fragilaria vaucheriae var. Manguinii.

Des prélèvements sur fonds de pierres et de graviers ont été effectués en 237 stations réparties sur 108 cours d'eau. Atherix ibis a été récolté jusqu'à 2 200 m d'altitude, Ibisia marginata 1 500 m et Atrichops crassipes 900 m. Les principaux facteurs limitant la répartition des trois espèces sont :

1) la température de l'eau qui doit atteindre en été un minimum de 13-14 °C pour A. ibis, de 11-12 °C pour I. marginata, de 18-19° C pour A. crassipes ;

2) la pente (les ruisseaux sont plus rarement colonisés au-delà de 25 %) en corrélation directe avec la stabilité des pierres du fond entre lesquelles les larves d'A. ibis et d'I. marginata vivent étroitement insérées. Dans ce biotope précis, une taille réduite et une faible section transversale constituent une facteur favorable à l'installation ou au maintien des espèces dans les cours d'eau à forte pente (Hexatoma et Dicranota comparativement à A. ibis, divers Oligochètes comparativement à Eiseniella tetraedra). A. crassipes, essentiellement psammophile, vit en courant lent ou même temporairement nul ;

3) la présence de branches d'arbres à feuilles caduques au-dessus de l'eau, nécessaire à I. marginata pour accomplir son cycle de développement. Cette espèce pond sur la face inférieure des feuilles de plusieurs essences, en particulier de Corylus avellana. La tendance à une oviposition collective est nette, la même feuille pouvant porter jusqu'à plus de 400 pontes.

De l'amont vers l'aval on rencontre donc : soit la succession ibis - marginata sous l'action prédominante de l'altitude (étages de végétation), soit, toujours en couvert de feuillus, la succession marginata - ibis par faible température estivale à altitude modérée.

La nymphose, toujours aérienne, a lieu le plus souvent dans les Bryophytes bordant le cours, à une distance de l'eau de 0,5 à 2 m chez I. marginata, dans les Bryophytes mais aussi dans les graviers émergés chez A. ibis, dans le sable chez A. crassipes. Elle dure de 10 à 12 jours à 19 °C chez A. crassipes.

The Chironomidae fauna of ten large European rivers (Rhine, Elbe, Oder, Danube, Loire, Pripjat, Po, Maas, Garonne and Rhône) were investigated by analysing their ecological traits (longitudinal zonation pattern, saprobiological affinities, feeding types) using one-dimensional and multivariate methods. The results confirm the geomorphological differentiation of these rivers in two main types, i.e. gravel-type and sand-type rivers. The analyses of the Chironomidae traits also showed that transition zones separate the two main types of rivers.
