Particle-laden flow through conduits is ubiquitous in both natural and industrial systems. In such flows, particles often migrate across the main fluid stream, resulting in non-uniform spatial distribution owing to particle–fluid and particle–particle interactions. The most relevant lateral particle migration mechanism by particle–fluid interaction is the Segré–Silberberg effect, which is induced by the inertial forces exerted on a particle, as the flow rate increases. However, methods to suppress it have not been suggested yet. Here, we demonstrate that adding a small amount of polymer to the particle-suspending solvent effectively suppresses the Segré–Silberberg effect in a square channel. To accurately determine the position of the particles within the channel cross-sections, we devised a dual-view imaging system applicable to microfluidic systems. Our analyses show that the Segré–Silberberg effect is effectively suppressed in a square microchannel due to the balance between the inertial and elastic forces at an optimal polymer concentration while maintaining nearly constant shear viscosity.

When one fluid is injected into a confined geometry such as a porous medium filled with another immiscible fluid, even at an extremely low injection speed, rapid filling of several pore spaces accompanied by retraction of multiple fluid–fluid interfaces can be observed. Such processes with fast liquid redistribution within the solid structure, called Haines jumps, are ubiquitous in many multiphase flow systems, which can impact fluid trapping, energy dissipation and hysteretic saturation in various engineering applications. Inspired by this mechanism, here, we propose a dual-channel structure to realise controlled Haines jumps during fluid displacement processes. Via theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we show that the dynamics of fluid interfaces during Haines jumps can be quantitatively correlated with the driving capillary pressure and dissipating viscous stress, which enables simultaneous determination of the fluid viscosity and interfacial tension in the dual-channel multiphase system.

This study explores the efficacy of a novel microfluidic device in isolating rheotactic sperm and assesses their advantages compared with other motile sperm. Two microfluidic devices were used in this study: the microfluidic device we designed to separate sperm based on rheotaxis and a simple passive microfluidic device. We compared the results with the density gradient centrifugation technique. Sperm attributes including concentration, morphology, viability and motility were assessed using related procedures. Statistical analyses were conducted using one-way analysis of variance. Results showed differences in sperm concentration, motility, morphology and vitality using different sperm separation techniques. The sperms separated using our microfluidic device demonstrated the highest motilities, normal morphology percentages and higher sperm vitality but significantly lower sperm concentrations. These findings suggest the potential of our microfluidic design in enhancing sperm quality. Our findings are in agreement with previous research, emphasizing the capability of microfluidics in enhancing sperm quality. Specifically, our designed microfluidic device exhibited exceptional efficacy in isolating highly motile sperm, a critical factor for successful fertilization.

Understanding interfacial instability in a coflow system has relevance in the effective manipulation of small objects in microfluidic applications. We experimentally elucidate interfacial instability in stratified coflow systems of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluid streams in microfluidic confinements. By performing a linear stability analysis, we derive equations that describe the complex wave speed and the dispersion relationship between wavenumber and angular frequency, thus categorizing the behaviour of the systems into two main regimes: stable (with a flat interface) and unstable (with either a wavy interface or droplet formation). We characterize the regimes in terms of the capillary numbers of the phases in a comprehensive regime plot. We decipher the dependence of interfacial instability on fluidic parameters by decoupling the physics into viscous and elastic components. Remarkably, our findings reveal that elastic stratification can both stabilize and destabilize the flow, depending on the fluid and flow parameters. We also examine droplet formation, which is important for microfluidic applications. Our findings suggest that adjusting the viscous and elastic properties of the fluids can control the transition between wavy and droplet-forming unstable regimes. Our investigation uncovers the physics behind the instability involved in interfacial flows of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids in general, and the unexplored behaviour of interfacial waves in stratified liquid systems. The present study can lead to a better understanding of the manipulation of small objects and production of droplets in microfluidic coflow systems.

Recognising that surfactants can impede the drag reduction resulting from superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS), we investigate the impact of spatio–temporal fluctuations in surfactant concentration on the drag-reduction properties of SHS. We model the unsteady transport of soluble surfactant in a channel flow bounded by two SHS. The flow is laminar, pressure driven and the SHS are periodic in the streamwise and spanwise directions. We assume that the channel length is much longer than the streamwise period, the streamwise period is much longer than the channel height and spanwise period, and bulk diffusion is sufficiently strong for cross-channel concentration gradients to be small. By combining long-wave and homogenisation theories, we derive an unsteady advection–diffusion equation for surfactant-flux transport over the length of the channel, which is coupled to a quasi-steady advection–diffusion equation for surfactant transport over individual plastrons. As diffusion over the length of the channel is typically small, the surfactant flux is governed by a nonlinear wave equation. In the fundamental case of the transport of a bolus of surfactant, we predict its propagation speed and describe its nonlinear evolution via interaction with the SHS. The propagation speed can fall below the average streamwise velocity as the surfactant adsorbs and rigidifies the plastrons. Smaller concentrations of surfactant are advected faster than larger ones, so that wave-steepening effects can lead to shock formation in the surfactant-flux distribution. Our asymptotic results reveal how unsteady surfactant transport can affect the spatio–temporal evolution of the slip velocity, drag reduction and effective slip length in SHS channels.

Most of the existing theories on electrophoresis are based on the consideration of a weak applied electric field and ions as point charges, which create a mean electric potential and neglect ion–solvent interactions. These theories cannot demonstrate the dependence of electrophoretic mobility on the applied electric field (nonlinear electrophoresis), reversal in mobility with increasing ion concentration and/or surface charge density or counterion saturation in the electric double layer. In this study we consider a modified electrokinetic model to analyse nonlinear electrophoresis by taking into account the finite ion size effects and ion–ion electrostatic correlations. In this approach, the mean-field-based model is extended to capture the many-body phenomena by considering the non-local electrostatic contribution in the ion free energy functional and the ion–ion hydrodynamic steric interactions are incorporated through the volume exclusion effect in the electrochemical potential. The viscosity of the medium is considered to vary with the local ionic volume fraction. Stronger correlations for multivalent counterions create ion layering, charge density oscillation and mobility reversal. Such phenomena are captured by the present continuum model. The ion crowding attenuates the growth of the electrophoretic mobility with the electric field. At a higher range of the imposed electric field, the ion concentration in the electric double layer enhances, which modifies both the overscreening and ion crowding processes.

We investigate theoretically the steady incompressible viscoelastic flow in a rigid axisymmetric cylindrical pipe with varying cross-section. We use the Oldroyd-B viscoelastic constitutive equation to model the fluid viscoelasticity. First, we derive exact general formulae: for the total average pressure-drop as a function of the wall shear rate and the viscoelastic axial normal extra-stress; for the viscoelastic extra-stress tensor and the Trouton ratio as functions of the fluid velocity on the axis of symmetry; and for the viscoelastic extra-stress tensor along the wall in terms of the shear rate at the wall. Then we exploit the classic lubrication approximation, valid for small values of the square of the aspect ratio of the pipe, to simplify the original governing equations. The final equations are solved analytically using a regular perturbation scheme in terms of the Deborah number, De, up to eighth order in De. For a hyperbolically shaped pipe, we reveal that the reduced pressure-drop and the Trouton ratio can be recast in terms of a modified Deborah number, Dem, and the polymer viscosity ratio, η, only. Furthermore, we enhance the convergence and accuracy of the eighth-order solutions by deriving transformed analytical formulae using Padé diagonal approximants. The results show the decrease of the pressure drop and the enhancement of the Trouton ratio with increasing Dem and/or increasing η. Comparison of the transformed solutions with numerical simulations of the lubrication equations using pseudospectral methods shows excellent agreement between the results, even for high values of Dem and all values of η, revealing the robustness, validity and efficiency of the theoretical methods and techniques developed in this work. Last, it is shown that the exact solution for the Trouton ratio gives a well-defined and finite solution for any value of Dem and reveals the reason for the failure of the corresponding high-order perturbation series for Dem > 1/2.

Understanding the effect of intricate surface wettability conditions on microswimmers is crucial for precisely navigating them across narrow microcirculatory networks. Here, we adopt the spherical squirmer model and Navier slip condition to delineate the microswimmer locomotion under a Poiseuille flow in a slit microchannel. Through a combined analytical–numerical approach utilizing bispherical coordinates and the superposition technique, we resolve the slip-modulated simultaneous hydrodynamic interaction with substrate boundaries. Phase portraits reveal that slip significantly alters propulsion mechanisms, destabilizing centreline stable oscillations of pullers beyond a threshold slip length. Superhydrophobic surfaces suppress near-wall rheotaxis states but preserve centreline focusing, facilitating slip-assisted directed transport without surface accumulation. Under strong background flows, subcritical Hopf bifurcation emerges for pullers at a critical slip length, transitioning dynamics from coexisting stable and unstable states to purely unstable behaviour. Contrastingly, for pushers, slip causes a transition from unstable to either stable or fixed-amplitude oscillations. Increased slip length reduces hydrodynamic repulsion on pullers from the walls by enhancing rotational velocity near the walls, whereas it counteracts the torque that causes unstable oscillations of pushers. Three-dimensional analysis of the trajectories reveals the significant role of the out-of-plane orientation of the microswimmer in its transitions between different swimming states. The presented regime maps offer parametric combinations for specific motion behaviours, guiding the development of smart microfluidic drug delivery systems and preventing biofilm deposition in biomedical devices.

The elasto-inertial focusing and rotating characteristics of spheroids in a square channel flow of Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluids are studied by the direct forcing/fictitious domain method. The rotational behaviours, changes in the equilibrium positions and travel distances are explored to analyse the mechanisms of spheroid migration in viscoelastic fluids. Within the present simulated parameters (1 ≤ Re ≤ 100, 0 ≤ Wi ≤ 2, 0.4 ≤ α ≤3), the results show that there are four kinds of equilibrium positions and six (five) kinds of rotational behaviours for the elasto-inertial migration of prolate (oblate) spheroids. We are the first to identify a new rotational mode for the migration of prolate spheroids. Only when the particles are initially located at a corner and wall bisector, some special initial orientations of the spheroids have an impact on the final equilibrium position and rotational mode. In other general initial positions, the initial orientation of the spheroid has a negligible effect. A higher Weissenberg number means the faster the particles migrate to the equilibrium position. The spheroid gradually changes from the corner (CO), channel centreline (CC), diagonal line (DL) and cross-section midline (CSM) equilibrium positions as the elastic number decreases, depending on the aspect ratio, initial orientation and rotational behaviour of the particles and the elastic number of the fluid. When the elastic number is less than the critical value, the types of rotational modes of the spheroids are reduced. By controlling the elastic number near the critical value, spheroids with different aspect ratios can be efficiently separated.

We numerically study the influence of a soluble surfactant on the microjetting mode of the liquid–liquid flow focusing configuration. The surfactant adsorbs on the interface next to the feeding capillary and accumulates in front of the emitted jet, significantly lowering the surface tension there. The resulting Marangoni stress substantially alters the balance of the tangential stresses at the interface but does not modify the interface velocity. The global stability analysis at the minimum flow rate stability limit shows that the Marangoni stress collaborates with soluto-capillarity to stabilize the microjetting mode. Our analysis unveils the noticeable effect of the Marangoni stress associated with the surface tension perturbation. Surfactant diffusion and desorption hardly affect the stability limit. Transient numerical simulations show how subcritical and supercritical base flows respond to a spatially localized initial perturbation. Our parametric study indicates that the minimum flow rate ratio depends on the adsorption constant and the surfactant concentration through the product of these two variables. The surfactant stabilizing effect increases with the outer stream flow rate. We show that surfactants not only stabilize the microemulsion resulting from the jet breakup in hydrodynamic focusing, but also allow for the reduction of droplet size. Our findings advance the fundamental understanding of the complex role of surfactants in tip streaming via hydrodynamic focusing. In particular, our results contradict the common assumption that adding surfactant favours tip streaming simply because it reduces the meniscus tip surface tension.

The electroosmotic flow (EOF) fields in the vicinity of solids with high dielectric permittivity are studied for the case of charge-asymmetric electrolyte solutions. Corresponding solutions of the coupled Poisson–Nernst–Planck and Navier–Stokes equations are obtained analytically and numerically. When a direct-current (DC) electric field is applied to a high-permittivity uncharged sphere, a net EOF develops that translates into a non-zero electrophoretic mobility of the sphere, although it does not carry any charge. Similarly, a DC field acting on a channel in a high-permittivity material results in a net flow through the channel, although the solid is uncharged. Such phenomena are expected to occur frequently whenever high-permittivity solids are immersed in charge-asymmetric electrolyte solutions and do not rely on special scenarios such as ion crowding. Also, the net flow velocities are very significant for realistic values of the electric field strength. The derived scaling relationships even predict giant net flow velocities through nanochannels of the order of metres per second for practically relevant scenarios.

The diffusiophoresis of charged hydrophobic nanoparticles (NPs) governed by an imposed ionic concentration gradient is analysed. The main objective is to elucidate the impact of the laterally mobile adsorbed surface ions at the interface on the propulsion of the hydrophobic NPs in diffusiophoresis. In addition, the dielectric polarization due to the difference in dielectric constant between the NPs and the suspension medium is also considered. The mobile surface ions create a friction as well as an electric force at the hydrophobic surface, which leads to a modification of the slip velocity condition and the slip length. We obtain an exact numerical solution of the governing electrokinetic equations in their full form by adopting a control volume formulation. The numerical model is supplemented by analytical solutions derived based on the Debye–Hückel linearization. We find that the lateral mobility of the surface ions obstruct the coions to diffuse from the higher concentration side to the lower concentration side, which results in a repulsive force to the particle leading to the occurrence of a negative mobility. Based on the numerical results and analytical solutions, we have shown that for a fully mobile surface charge, the diffusiophoresis of a hydrophobic NP is identical to the diffusiophoresis of a liquid droplet whose viscosity is related to the slip length of the hydrophobic particle. We establish that the dielectric polarization enhances the velocity of a hydrophobic particle, which has potential applications in the practical context.

Consider the motion of a thin layer of electrically conducting fluid, between two closely spaced parallel plates, in a classical Hele-Shaw geometry. Furthermore, let the system be immersed in a uniform external magnetic field (normal to the plates) and let electrical current be driven between conducting probes immersed in the fluid layer. In the present paper, we analyse the ensuing fluid flow at low Hartmann numbers. Physically, the system is particularly interesting because it allows for circulation in the flow, which is not possible in the standard pressure-driven Hele-Shaw cell. We first elucidate the mechanism of flow generation both physically and mathematically. After formulating the problem using complex variables, we present mathematical solutions for a class of canonical multiply connected geometries in terms of the prime function framework developed by Crowdy (Solving Problems in Multiply Connected Domains, SIAM, 2020). We then demonstrate how recently developed fast numerical methods may be applied to accurately determine the flow field in arbitrary geometries.

Small finite-size particles suspended in fluid flow through an enclosed curved duct can focus to points or periodic orbits in the two-dimensional duct cross-section. This particle focusing is due to a balance between inertial lift forces arising from axial flow and drag forces arising from cross-sectional vortices. The inertial particle focusing phenomenon has been exploited in various industrial and medical applications to passively separate particles by size using purely hydrodynamic effects. A fixed size particle in a circular duct with a uniform rectangular cross-section can have a variety of particle attractors, such as stable nodes/spirals or limit cycles, depending on the radius of curvature of the duct. Bifurcations occur at different radii of curvature, such as pitchfork, saddle-node and saddle-node infinite period (SNIPER), which result in variations in the location, number and nature of these particle attractors. By using a quasi-steady approximation, we extend the theoretical model of Harding et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 875, 2019, pp. 1–43) developed for the particle dynamics in circular ducts to spiral duct geometries with slowly varying curvature, and numerically explore the particle dynamics within. Bifurcations of particle attractors with respect to radius of curvature can be traversed within spiral ducts and give rise to a rich nonlinear particle dynamics and various types of tipping phenomena, such as bifurcation-induced tipping (B-tipping), rate-induced tipping (R-tipping) and a combination of both, which we explore in detail. We discuss implications of these unsteady dynamical behaviours for particle separation and propose novel mechanisms to separate particles by size in a non-equilibrium manner.

The classical Helmholtz–Smoluchowski (HS) model of electroosmosis holds for homogeneously charged interfaces in contact with a fluid layer bearing an equal and opposite net charge. However, inhomogeneities in the surface charge and topography are inevitable, either as practical materials and fabrication artefacts, or at times as deliberately introduced modulations for flow control. In an effort to arrive at an analytically tractable theoretical framework for addressing the underlying electro-mechanical coupling, here, we generalize the traditional HS theory to an extent where both the surface charge and topographies may bear arbitrary and independent periodic forms. Using a spectral-asymptotic approach, we further arrive at closed-form expressions for describing the resulting electroosmotic pumping for topographic features with small characteristic amplitude to pattern period ratio, as relevant for most practical scenarios. We subsequently execute full-scale numerical simulations without any restrictions on the surface charge and topography variations to assess the efficacy of the theoretical framework. The corresponding test beds include distinctive signature patterns – for example, a square-wave surface charge distribution on trapezoidal pit topographies. Our results reveal that the charge–topography interplay induces an anisotropic flow drift, deviating from the classical HS paradigm. This, in turn, provides new quantitative insights into highly selective electroosmotic flow control via judicious design of the charge and topographical patterns, resulting in controllable accentuation, attenuation, nullification, deflection and even complete reversal of the flow. Our analysis further establishes a provision of estimating the zeta potentials of naturally ‘contaminated’ surfaces, as well as explaining the electrophoresis of large inhomogeneous particles; a paradigm that remained to be explored thus far.

A simulation method has been developed to efficiently evaluate the motion of colloidal particles in a low-Reynolds-number confined microchannel flow using a Lagrangian-based approach. In this method, the background velocity within the channel, in the absence of suspended particles, is obtained from a fluid dynamics solver and is used to update the velocity at the particle centres using the Stokesian dynamics (SD) method, which incorporates multi-body hydrodynamic interactions. As a result, instead of computing the momentum of both the fluid and particles throughout the entire computational domain, the microscopic balance equation is solved only at the particle centres, increasing the computational efficiency. To accommodate complex boundary conditions within the SD framework, imaginary particles are placed on the channel walls, allowing the mobility relation to be reformulated to apply velocity constraints to immobilized wall particles. By employing this constrained SD approach, global mobility interactions that need to be computed at each time step are limited to the interior particles, resulting in a significant reduction in computational cost. The efficiency of this study is demonstrated through case studies on particulate flows in contraction and cross-flow microchannels. By using colloidal particles that incorporate Brownian motion and inter-particle attraction, observations through the entire stages of fouling dynamics are possible, from particle inflow to channel blockage. The fouling patterns observed in the simulations are consistent with experiments conducted under the same flow conditions. This study provides an efficient approach for analysing the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on particle dynamics in microfluidics and materials processing fields while allowing for predictions about structural changes over long-time scales, including complex phenomena such as clogging.

A hybrid lattice Boltzmann and finite difference method is applied to study the influence of soluble surfactants on droplet deformation and breakup in simple shear flow. First, the influence of bulk surfactant parameters on droplet deformation in two-dimensional shear flow is investigated, and the surfactant solubility is found to influence droplet deformation by changing average interface surfactant concentration and non-uniform effects induced by non-uniform interfacial tension and Marangoni forces. In addition, the droplet deformation first increases and then decreases with Biot number, increases significantly with adsorption number $k$ and decreases with Péclet number or adsorption depth; and among the parameters, $k$ is the most influential one. Then, we consider three-dimensional shear flow and investigate the roles of surfactants on droplet deformation and breakup for different capillary numbers and viscosity ratios. Results show that in the soluble case with $k=0.429$, the droplet exhibits nearly the same deformation as in the insoluble case due to the balance between surfactant adsorption and desorption; upon increasing $k$ from 0.429 to 1, the average interface surfactant concentration is greatly enhanced, leading to significant increase in droplet deformation. The critical capillary number of droplet breakup $C{{a}_{cr}}$ is identified for varying viscosity ratios in clean, insoluble and soluble ($k=0.429$ and 1) systems. As the viscosity ratio increases, $C{{a}_{cr}}$ first decreases and then increases rapidly in all systems. The addition of surfactants always favours droplet breakup, and increasing solubility or $k$ could further reduce $C{{a}_{cr}}$ by increasing average interface surfactant concentration and local surfactant concentration near the neck during the necking stage.

Understanding and controlling fluid entrapment during forced imbibition in porous media is crucial for many natural and industrial applications. However, the microscale physics and macroscopic consequences of fluid entrapment in these geometric-confined porous media remain poorly understood. Here, we introduce a novel multidepth microfluidic chip, which can mitigate the depth confinement of traditional two-dimensional (2-D) microfluidic chips and mimic the wide pore size distribution as natural-occurring three-dimensional (3-D) porous media. Based on microfluidic experiments and direct numerical simulations, we observe the fluid-entrapment scenarios and elucidate the underlying complex interaction between geometric confinement, capillary number and wettability. Increasing depth variation can promote fluid entrapment, whereas increasing capillary number and contact angle yield the opposite effect, which seemingly contradicts conventional expectations in traditional 2-D microfluidic chips. The fluid-entrapment scenario in depth-variable microfluidic chips stems from microscopic interfacial phenomena, classified as snap-off and bypass events. We provide theoretical analyses of these pore-scale events and validate corresponding phase diagrams numerically. It is shown that increasing depth variation triggers snap-off and bypass events. Conversely, a higher capillary number suppresses snap-off events under strong imbibition, and an increased contact angle inhibits bypass events under imbibition. These macroscopic imbibition patterns in microfluidic porous media can be linked with these pore-scale events by improved dynamic pore-network models. Our findings bridge the understanding of forced imbibition between 2-D and 3-D porous media and provide design principles for newly engineered porous media with respect to their desired imbibition behaviours.

A lattice Boltzmann method is used to explore the effect of surfactants on the unequal volume breakup of a droplet in a T-junction microchannel, and the asymmetry due to fabrication defects in real-life microchannels is modelled as the pressure difference between the two branch outlets ($\Delta {P^\ast }$). We first study the effect of the surfactants on the droplet dynamics at different dimensionless initial droplet lengths ($l_0^\ast $) and capillary numbers (Ca) under symmetric boundary conditions ($\Delta {P^\ast } = 0$). The results indicate that the presence of surfactants promotes droplet deformation and breakup at small and moderate $l_0^\ast $ values, while the surfactant effect is weakened at large $l_0^\ast $ values. When the branch channels are completely blocked by the droplet, a linear relationship is observed between the dimensionless droplet length ($l_d^\ast $) and dimensionless time (${t^\ast }$), and two formulas are proposed for predicting the evolution of $l_d^\ast $ with ${t^\ast }$ for the two systems. We then investigate the effect of the surfactants on the droplet breakup at different values of $\Delta {P^\ast }$ and bulk surfactant concentrations (${\psi _b}$) under asymmetric boundary conditions ($\Delta {P^\ast } \ne 0$). It is observed that, as $\Delta {P^\ast }$ increases, the volume ratio of the generated droplets (${V_1}/{V_2}$) decreases to 0 in both systems, while the rate of decrease is higher in the clean system, i.e. the presence of surfactants could cause a decreased pressure difference between the droplet tips. As ${\psi _b}$ increases, ${V_1}/{V_2}$ first increases rapidly, then remains almost constant and finally decreases slightly. We thus establish a phase diagram that describes the ${V_1}/{V_2}$ variation with $\Delta {P^\ast }$ and ${\psi _b}$.

Oscillatory flows have become an indispensable tool in microfluidics, inducing inertial effects for displacing and manipulating fluid-borne objects in a reliable, controllable and label-free fashion. However, the quantitative description of such effects has been confined to limit cases and specialized scenarios. Here we develop an analytical formalism yielding the equation of motion of density-mismatched spherical particles in oscillatory background flows, generalizing previous work. Inertial force terms are systematically derived from the geometry of the flow field together with analytically known Stokes number dependences. Supported by independent, first-principles direct numerical simulations, we find that these forces are important even for nearly density-matched objects such as cells or bacteria, enabling their fast displacement and separation. Our formalism thus consistently incorporates particle inertia into the Maxey–Riley equation, and in doing so provides a generalization of Auton's modification to added mass, as well as recovering the description of acoustic radiation forces on particles as a limiting case.
