Let A be a Banach algebra and let X be a Banach A-bimodule. We consider the Banach algebra ${A\oplus _1 X}$ , where A is a commutative Banach algebra. We investigate the Bochner–Schoenberg–Eberlein (BSE) property and the BSE module property on $A\oplus _1 X$ . We show that the module extension Banach algebra $A\oplus _1 X$ is a BSE Banach algebra if and only if A is a BSE Banach algebra and $X=\{0\}$ . Furthermore, we consider $A\oplus _1 X$ as a Banach $A\oplus _1 X$ -module and characterise the BSE module property on $A\oplus _1 X$ . We show that $A\oplus _1 X$ is a BSE Banach $A\oplus _1 X$ -module if and only if A and X are BSE Banach A-modules.

Let G be a locally compact group and let ${\mathcal {SUB}(G)}$ be the hyperspace of closed subgroups of G endowed with the Chabauty topology. The main purpose of this paper is to characterise the connectedness of the Chabauty space ${\mathcal {SUB}(G)}$ . More precisely, we show that if G is a connected pronilpotent group, then ${\mathcal {SUB}(G)}$ is connected if and only if G contains a closed subgroup topologically isomorphic to ${{\mathbb R}}$ .

It is a long-standing open question whether every Polish group that is not locally compact admits a Borel action on a standard Borel space whose associated orbit equivalence relation is not essentially countable. We answer this question positively for the class of all Polish groups that embed in the isometry group of a locally compact metric space. This class contains all non-archimedean Polish groups, for which we provide an alternative proof based on a new criterion for non-essential countability. Finally, we provide the following variant of a theorem of Solecki: every infinite-dimensional Banach space has a continuous action whose orbit equivalence relation is Borel but not essentially countable.

We study the second dual algebra of a Banach algebra and related problems. We resolve some questions raised by Ülger, which are related to Arens products. We then discuss a question of Gulick on the radical of the second dual algebra of the group algebra of a discrete abelian group and give an application of Arens regularity to Fourier and Fourier–Stieltjes transforms.

We study the complexity of the topological isomorphism relation for various classes of closed subgroups of the group of permutations of the natural numbers. We use the setting of Borel reducibility between equivalence relations on Borel spaces. For profinite, locally compact, and Roelcke precompact groups, we show that the complexity is the same as the one of countable graph isomorphism. For oligomorphic groups, we merely establish this as an upper bound.

Let $T$ be a locally finite tree without vertices of degree $1$. We show that among the closed subgroups of $\text{Aut}(T)$ acting with a bounded number of orbits, the Chabauty-closure of the set of topologically simple groups is the set of groups without proper open subgroup of finite index. Moreover, if all vertices of $T$ have degree ${\geqslant}3$, then the set of isomorphism classes of topologically simple closed subgroups of $\text{Aut}(T)$ acting doubly transitively on $\unicode[STIX]{x2202}T$ carries a natural compact Hausdorff topology inherited from Chabauty. Some of our considerations are valid in the context of automorphism groups of locally finite connected graphs. Applications to Weyl-transitive automorphism groups of buildings are also presented.

Let $G$ be a locally compact amenable group and $A(G)$ and $B(G)$ be the Fourier and the Fourier–Stieltjes algebras of $G,$ respectively. For a power bounded element $u$ of $B(G)$, let ${\mathcal{E}}_{u}:=\{g\in G:|u(g)|=1\}$. We prove some convergence theorems for iterates of multipliers in Fourier algebras.

(a) If $\Vert u\Vert _{B(G)}\leq 1$, then $\lim _{n\rightarrow \infty }\Vert u^{n}v\Vert _{A(G)}=\text{dist}(v,I_{{\mathcal{E}}_{u}})\text{ for }v\in A(G)$, where $I_{{\mathcal{E}}_{u}}=\{v\in A(G):v({\mathcal{E}}_{u})=\{0\}\}$.

(b) The sequence $\{u^{n}v\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ converges for every $v\in A(G)$ if and only if ${\mathcal{E}}_{u}$ is clopen and $u({\mathcal{E}}_{u})=\{1\}.$

(c) If the sequence $\{u^{n}v\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ converges weakly in $A(G)$ for some $v\in A(G)$, then it converges strongly.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group and let $\omega$ be a continuous weight on $G$. We show that for each of the Banach algebras ${{L}^{1}}\left( G,\,\omega \right),\,M\left( G,\,\omega \right),\,LUC{{\left( G,\,{{\omega }^{-1}} \right)}^{*}}$, and ${{L}^{1}}{{\left( G,\,\omega \right)}^{**}}$, the order structure combined with the algebra structure determines the weighted group.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group with a fixed left Haar measure. In this paper, given a strictly positive Young function ${\rm\Phi}$, we consider $L^{{\rm\Phi}}(G)$ as a Banach left $L^{1}(G)$-module. Then we equip $L^{{\rm\Phi}}(G)$ with the strict topology induced by $L^{1}(G)$ in the sense of Sentilles and Taylor. Some properties of this locally convex topology and a comparison with weak$^{\ast }$, bounded weak$^{\ast }$ and norm topologies are presented.

For a Lie group $G$, we show that the map $C_{c}^{\infty }\,\left( G \right)\,\times \,C_{c}^{\infty }\,\left( G \right)\,\to \,C_{c}^{\infty }\,\left( G \right),\,\left( \gamma ,\,\eta \right)\mapsto \,\gamma \,*\,\eta $ taking a pair of test functions to their convolution, is continuous if and only if $G$ is $\sigma -$compact. More generally, consider $r,\,s,\,t\,\in {{\mathbb{N}}_{0}}\,\cup \,\left\{ \infty \right\}$ with $t\,\le \,r\,+\,s$, locally convex spaces ${{E}_{1}}\,,\,{{E}_{2}}$ and a continuous bilinear map $b:\,{{E}_{1}}\,\times \,{{E}_{2}}\,\to \,F$ to a complete locally convex space $F$. Let $\beta :\,C_{c}^{r}\,\left( G,\,{{E}_{1}} \right)\,\times \,C_{c}^{S}\,\left( G,\,{{E}_{2}} \right)\,\to$$C_{c}^{t}\,\left( G,\,F \right),\,\left( \gamma ,\,\eta \right)\,\mapsto \,\gamma \,*\,b\,\eta$ be the associated convolution map. The main result is a characterization of those $\left( G,\,r,s,t,b \right)$ for which $\beta$ is continuous. Convolution of compactly supported continuous functions on a locally compact group is also discussed as well as convolution of compactly supported ${{L}^{1}}$-functions and convolution of compactly supported Radon measures.

In this paper we use the recent developments in the representation theory of locally compact quantum groups, to assign to each locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ a locally compact group $\tilde{\mathbb{G}}$ that is the quantum version of point-masses and is an invariant for the latter. We show that “quantum point-masses” can be identified with several other locally compact groups that can be naturally assigned to the quantum group $\mathbb{G}$. This assignment preserves compactness as well as discreteness (hence also finiteness), and for large classes of quantum groups, amenability. We calculate this invariant for some of the most well-known examples of non-classical quantum groups. Also, we show that several structural properties of $\mathbb{G}$ are encoded by $\tilde{\mathbb{G}}$ the latter, despite being a simpler object, can carry very important information about $\mathbb{G}$.

For a locally compact group $ \mathcal{G} $, we introduce and study a class of locally convex topologies $\tau $ on the measure algebra $M( \mathcal{G} )$ of $ \mathcal{G} $. In particular, we show that the strong dual of $(M( \mathcal{G} ), \tau )$ can be identified with a closed subspace of the Banach space $M\mathop{( \mathcal{G} )}\nolimits ^{\ast } $; we also investigate some properties of the locally convex space $(M( \mathcal{G} ), \tau )$.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a nondiscrete locally compact group, $p\in (0, 1)$ and $q\in (0, + \infty ] $, then $\{ (f, g)\in {L}^{p} (G)\times {L}^{q} (G): f\ast g\text{ is finite } \lambda \text{-a.e.} \} $ is a set of first category in ${L}^{p} (G)\times {L}^{q} (G)$. We also show that if $G$ is a nondiscrete locally compact group and $p, q, r\in [1, + \infty ] $ such that $1/ p+ 1/ q\gt 1+ 1/ r$, then $\{ (f, g)\in {L}^{p} (G)\times {L}^{q} (G): f\ast g\in {L}^{r} (G)\} $, is a set of first category in ${L}^{p} (G)\times {L}^{q} (G)$. Consequently, for $p, q\in [1+ \infty )$ and $r\in [1, + \infty ] $ with $1/ p+ 1/ q\gt 1+ 1/ r$, $G$ is discrete if and only if ${L}^{p} (G)\ast {L}^{q} (G)\subseteq {L}^{r} (G)$; this answers a question raised by Saeki [‘The ${L}^{p} $-conjecture and Young’s inequality’, Illinois J. Math. 34 (1990), 615–627].

In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which the answer to the open problem raised by Ghahramani and Lau (‘Multipliers and modulus on Banach algebras related to locally compact groups’, J. Funct. Anal. 150 (1997), 478–497) is positive.

For a Banach algebra 𝒜 and a character ϕ on 𝒜, we introduce and study the notion of essential ϕ-amenability of 𝒜. We give some examples to show that the class of essentially ϕ-amenable Banach algebras is larger than that of ϕ-amenable Banach algebras introduced by Kaniuth et al. [‘On ϕ-amenability of Banach algebras’, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc.144 (2008), 85–96]. Finally, we characterize the essential ϕ-amenability of various Banach algebras related to locally compact groups.

Let X be a locally compact space, and 𝔏∞0(X,ι) be the space of all essentially bounded ι-measurable functions f on X vanishing at infinity. We introduce and study a locally convex topology β1(X,ι) on the Lebesgue space 𝔏1(X,ι) such that the strong dual of (𝔏1(X,ι),β1(X,ι)) can be identified with . Next, by showing that β1(X,ι) can be considered as a natural mixed topology, we deduce some of its basic properties. Finally, as an application, we prove that L1 (G) , the group algebra of a locally compact Hausdorff topological group G, equipped with the convolution multiplication is a complete semitopological algebra under the β1 (G) topology.

For a locally compact group G, let LUC(G) denote the space of all left uniformly continuous functions on G. Here, we investigate projectivity, injectivity and flatness of LUC(G) and its dual space LUC(G)* as Banach left modules over the group algebra as well as the measure algebra of G.

Homological properties of several Banach left L1(G)-modules have been studied by Dales and Polyakov and recently by Ramsden. In this paper, we characterize some homological properties of and as Banach left L1(G)-modules, such as flatness, injectivity and projectivity.

Let ${{A}_{p}}\left( G \right)$ be the Figa-Talamanca, Herz Banach Algebra on $G$; thus ${{A}_{2}}\left( G \right)$ is the Fourier algebra. Strong Ditkin $\left( \text{SD} \right)$ and Extremely Strong Ditkin $\left( \text{ESD} \right)$ sets for the Banach algebras $A_{P}^{r}\left( G \right)$ are investigated for abelian and nonabelian locally compact groups $G$. It is shown that $\text{SD}$ and $\text{ESD}$ sets for ${{A}_{p}}\left( G \right)$ remain $\text{SD}$ and $\text{ESD}$ sets for $A_{P}^{r}\left( G \right)$, with strict inclusion for $\text{ESD}$ sets. The case for the strict inclusion of $\text{SD}$ sets is left open.

A result on the weak sequential completeness of ${{A}_{2}}\left( F \right)$ for $\text{ESD}$ sets $F$ is proved and used to show that Varopoulos, Helson, and Sidon sets are not $\text{ESD}$ sets for ${{A}_{2}}\left( G \right)$, yet they are such for $A_{2}^{r}\left( G \right)$ for discrete groups $G$, for any $1\,\le \,r\,\le \,2$.

A result is given on the equivalence of the sequential and the net definitions of $\text{SD}$ or $\text{ESD}$ sets for $\sigma $-compact groups.

The above results are new even if $G$ is abelian.

We prove that the Bost conjecture with C*-algebra coefficients for locally compact Hausdorff groups passes to open subgroups. We also prove that if a locally compact Hausdorff group acts on a tree, then the Bost conjecture with C*-coefficients is true for the group if and only if it is true for the stabilisers of the vertices.
