We study covering numbers of subsets of the symmetric group $S_n$ that exhibit closure under conjugation, known as normal sets. We show that for any $\epsilon>0$, there exists $n_0$ such that if $n>n_0$ and A is a normal subset of the symmetric group $S_n$ of density $\ge e^{-n^{2/5 - \epsilon }}$, then $A^2 \supseteq A_n$. This improves upon a seminal result of Larsen and Shalev (Inventiones Math., 2008), with our $2/5$ in the double exponent replacing their $1/4$.

Our proof strategy combines two types of techniques. The first is ‘traditional’ techniques rooted in character bounds and asymptotics for the Witten zeta function, drawing from the foundational works of Liebeck–Shalev, Larsen–Shalev, and more recently, Larsen–Tiep. The second is a sharp hypercontractivity theorem in the symmetric group, which was recently obtained by Keevash and Lifshitz. This synthesis of algebraic and analytic methodologies not only allows us to attain our improved bounds but also provides new insights into the behavior of general independent sets in normal Cayley graphs over symmetric groups.

Let $\Gamma _{g}$ be the fundamental group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g\geq 2$ . We develop a new method for integrating over the representation space $\mathbb {X}_{g,n}=\mathrm {Hom}(\Gamma _{g},S_{n})$ , where $S_{n}$ is the symmetric group of permutations of $\{1,\ldots ,n\}$ . Equivalently, this is the space of all vertex-labeled, n-sheeted covering spaces of the closed surface of genus g.

Given $\phi \in \mathbb {X}_{g,n}$ and $\gamma \in \Gamma _{g}$ , we let $\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }(\phi )$ be the number of fixed points of the permutation $\phi (\gamma )$ . The function $\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }$ is a special case of a natural family of functions on $\mathbb {X}_{g,n}$ called Wilson loops. Our new methodology leads to an asymptotic formula, as $n\to \infty $ , for the expectation of $\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }$ with respect to the uniform probability measure on $\mathbb {X}_{g,n}$ , which is denoted by $\mathbb {E}_{g,n}[\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }]$ . We prove that if $\gamma \in \Gamma _{g}$ is not the identity and q is maximal such that $\gamma $ is a q th power in $\Gamma _{g}$ , then

as $n\to \infty $ , where $d\left (q\right )$ is the number of divisors of q. Even the weaker corollary that $\mathbb {E}_{g,n}[\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }]=o(n)$ as $n\to \infty $ is a new result of this paper. We also prove that $\mathbb {E}_{g,n}[\mathsf {fix}_{\gamma }]$ can be approximated to any order $O(n^{-M})$ by a polynomial in $n^{-1}$ .

We investigate products of certain double cosets for the symmetric group and use the findings to derive some multiplication formulas for the $q$-Schur superalgebras. This gives a combinatorialization of the relative norm approach developed in Du and Gu (A realization of the quantum supergroup$\mathbf{U}(\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}_{m|n})$, J. Algebra 404 (2014), 60–99). We then give several applications of the multiplication formulas, including the matrix representation of the regular representation and a semisimplicity criterion for $q$-Schur superalgebras. We also construct infinitesimal and little $q$-Schur superalgebras directly from the multiplication formulas and develop their semisimplicity criteria.

We show that the proportion of permutations $g$ in $S_{\!n}$ or $A_{n}$ such that $g$ has even order and $g^{|g|/2}$ is an involution with support of cardinality at most $\lceil n^{{\it\varepsilon}}\rceil$ is at least a constant multiple of ${\it\varepsilon}$. Using this result, we obtain the same conclusion for elements in a classical group of natural dimension $n$ in odd characteristic that have even order and power up to an involution with $(-1)$-eigenspace of dimension at most $\lceil n^{{\it\varepsilon}}\rceil$ for a linear or unitary group, or $2\lceil \lfloor n/2\rfloor ^{{\it\varepsilon}}\rceil$ for a symplectic or orthogonal group.

Given a class ${\cal C}$ of subgroups of a topological group G, we say that a subgroup $H \in {\cal C}$ is a universal${\cal C}$subgroup of G if every subgroup $K \in {\cal C}$ is a continuous homomorphic preimage of H. Such subgroups may be regarded as complete members of ${\cal C}$ with respect to a natural preorder on the set of subgroups of G. We show that for any locally compact Polish group G, the countable power Gω has a universal Kσ subgroup and a universal compactly generated subgroup. We prove a weaker version of this in the nonlocally compact case and provide an example showing that this result cannot readily be improved. Additionally, we show that many standard Banach spaces (viewed as additive topological groups) have universal Kσ and compactly generated subgroups. As an aside, we explore the relationship between the classes of Kσ and compactly generated subgroups and give conditions under which the two coincide.

Let ${{\mathbb{F}}_{q}}\left[ t \right]$ denote the polynomial ring over the finite field ${{\mathbb{F}}_{q}}$. We employ Wooley's new efficient congruencing method to prove certain multidimensional Vinogradov-type estimates in ${{\mathbb{F}}_{q}}\left[ t \right]$. These results allow us to apply a variant of the circle method to obtain asymptotic formulas for a system connected to the problem about linear spaces lying on hypersurfaces defined over ${{\mathbb{F}}_{q}}\left[ t \right]$.

Combinatorial structures that compose and decompose give rise to Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. The Hadamard product of two Hopf monoids is another Hopf monoid. We prove two main results regarding freeness of Hadamard products. The first one states that if one factor is connected and the other is free as a monoid, their Hadamard product is free (and connected). The second provides an explicit basis for the Hadamard product when both factors are free.

The first main result is obtained by showing the existence of a one-parameter deformation of the comonoid structure and appealing to a rigidity result of Loday and Ronco that applies when the parameter is set to zero. To obtain the second result, we introduce an operation on species that is intertwined by the free monoid functor with the Hadamard product. As an application of the first result, we deduce that the Boolean transform of the dimension sequence of a connected Hopf monoid is nonnegative.

Inspired by Aldous' conjecture for the spectral gap of the interchange process and its recent resolution by Caputo, Liggett, and Richthammer, we define an associated order $\prec $ on the irreducible representations of ${{S}_{n}}$. Aldous' conjecture is equivalent to certain representations being comparable in this order, and hence determining the “Aldous order” completely is a generalized question. We show a few additional entries for this order.

Malvenuto and Reutenauer (C. Malvenuto and C. Reutenauer, Duality between quasi-symmetric functions and the Solomon descent algebra, J. Algebra177 (1995), 967–982) showed how the total symmetric group ring ⊕nZΣn could be made into a Hopf algebra with a very nice structure which admitted the Solomon descent algebra as a sub-Hopf algebra. To do this they replaced the group multiplication by a convolution product, thus distancing their structure from the group structure of Σn. In this paper we examine what is possible if we keep to the group multiplication, and we also consider the question for more general families of groups. We show that a Hopf algebra structure is not possible, but cocommutative and non-cocommutative counital bialgebras can be obtained, arising from certain diagrams of group homomorphisms. In the case of the symmetric groups we note that all such structures are weak in the sense that the dual algebras have many zero-divisors, but structures which respect descent sums can be found.

Erdős and Szekeres [‘Some number theoretic problems on binomial coefficients’, Aust. Math. Soc. Gaz.5 (1978), 97–99] showed that for any four positive integers satisfying m1+m2=n1+n2, the two binomial coefficients (m1+m2)!/m1!m2! and (n1+n2)!/n1!n2! have a common divisor greater than 1. The analogous statement for k-element families of k-nomial coefficients (k>1) was conjectured in 1997 by David Wasserman.

Erdős and Szekeres remark that if m1,m2,n1,n2 as above are all greater than 1, there is probably a lower bound on the common divisor in question which goes to infinity as a function of m1 +m2 . Such a bound is obtained in Section 2.

The remainder of this paper is devoted to proving results that narrow the class of possible counterexamples to Wasserman’s conjecture.

Let ${{R}_{n}}\left( \alpha \right)$ be the $n!\,\times \,n!$ matrix whose matrix elements ${{\left[ {{R}_{n}}\left( \alpha \right) \right]}_{\sigma p}}$ , with $\sigma$ and $p$ in the symmetric group ${{G}_{n}}$ , are ${{\alpha }^{\ell \left( \sigma {{p}^{-1}} \right)}}$ with $0\,<\,\alpha \,<\,1$, where $\ell \left( \text{ }\!\!\pi\!\!\text{ } \right)$ denotes the number of cycles in $\text{ }\pi \text{ }\in {{G}_{n}}.$ We give the spectrum of ${{R}_{n}}$ and show that the ratio of the largest eigenvalue ${{\text{ }\!\!\lambda\!\!\text{ }}_{0}}$ to the second largest one (in absolute value) increases as a positive power of $n$ as $n\,\to \,\infty$.

A complete classification is given of finite primitive permutation groups which contain an abelian regular subgroup. This solves a long-standing open problem in permutation group theory initiated by W. Burnside in 1900.

Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for a Polish topological group to be ‘almost free’. It is deduced that the existence of one free subgroup of a Polish group can lead to the existence of many free subgroups of maximal rank. Applications are given to permutation groups, profinite groups, Lie groups and unitary groups.

A norm on ℝn is said to be permutation invariant if its value is preserved under permutation of the coordinates of a vector. The isometry group of such a norm must be closed, contain Sn and —I, and be conjugate to a subgroup of On, the orthogonal group. Motivated by this, we are interested in classifying all closed groups G such that 〈—I,Sn〉 < G < On. We use the theory of Lie groups to classify all possible infinite groups G, and use the theory of finite reflection groups to classify all possible finite groups G. In keeping with the original motivation, all groups arising are shown to be isometry groups. This completes the work of Gordon and Lewis, who studied the same problem and obtained the results for n ≥ 13.
