The main purpose of this note is to prove a special case of the following conjecture.

Conjecture. If F is holomorphic on the unit ball Bn in Cn and has positive real part, then F is in Hp(Bn) for 0 < p < ½(n + 1).

Here Hp(Bn) (0 < p < ∞) denote the usual Hardy spaces of holomorphic functions on Bn. See below for definitions. We remark that the conjecture is known for 0 < p < 1 and that some evidence for it already exists in the literature; for example [1, Theorems 3.11 and 3.15] where it is shown that a particular extreme element of the convex cone of functions

is in Hp(B2) for 0 < p < 3/2.

An algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space H is said to be reductive if it is unital, weakly closed and has the property that if M ⊂ H is a (closed) subspace invariant for every operator in , then so is M⊥. Loginov and Šul'man [6] and Rosenthal [9] proved that if is an abelian reductive algebra which commutes with a compact operator K having a dense range, then is a von Neumann algebra. Note that in this case every invariant subspace of is spanned by one-dimensional invariant subspaces. Indeed, the operator KK* commutes with . Hence its eigenspaces are invariant for , so that H is an orthogonal sum of the finite-dimensional invariant subspaces of From this our claim easily follows.

In [8] we classified degree one maps denned on Sp × Sg × Sr. In this paper we shall study degree one maps defined on the n-dimensional torus T = Sl × Sl × … × S1 as well as certain general properties of degree one maps. Theorem 1.1 must be known to experts; however we could not find it in the literature. Theorem 1.5 b) says that a Poincaré complex is nilpotent if it admits a degree one map from another nilpotent Poincaré complex. Theorem 1.5 a) means that certain stable properties are preserved by degree one maps and we use it later in Section 2.

In an earlier paper [6] we considered the application of Lagrangian methods to the enumeration of plane rooted trees with given colour partition. We obtained an expression which generalised Tutte’s result [9], and a correspondence, which, when specialised, gives the de Bruijn-van Aardenne Ehrenfest-Smith-Tutte Theorem [1]. A corollary of these results is a one-to-one correspondence [4], between trees and generalised derangements, for which no combinatorial description has yet been found.

In this paper we extend these methods to the enumeration of rooted labelled trees to demonstrate how another pair of well-known and apparently unrelated theorems may be obtained as the result of a single enumerative approach. In particular, we show that a generalisation of Good's result [3], also considered by Knuth [7], and the matrix tree theorem [8] have a common origin in a single system of functional equations, and that they correspond to different coefficients in the power series solution.

A (group) divisible design is a tactical configuration for which the v points are split into m classes of n each, such that points have joining number λ (resp. λ2) if and only if they are in the same (resp. in different) classes. We are interested in such designs with a nice automorphism group. We first investigate divisible designs with equally many points and blocks admitting an automorphism group acting regularly on all points and on all blocks, i.e., with a Singer group (Singer [50] obtained the first result in this direction for the finite projective spaces).

As in the case of block designs, one may expect a divisible design with a Singer group to be equivalent to some sort of difference set; as it turns out, one here obtains a generalisation of the relative difference sets of Butson and Elliott [11] and [20].

Introduction. The natural problem of determining all the Lie algebras of finite dimension was broken in two parts by Levi's theorem:

1) the classification of semi-simple Lie algebras (achieved by Killing and Cartan around 1890)

2) the classification of solvable Lie algebras (reduced to the classification of nilpotent Lie algebras by Malcev in 1945 (see [10])).

The Killing form is identically equal to zero for a nilpotent Lie algebra but it is non-degenerate for a semi-simple Lie algebra. Therefore there was a huge gap between those two extreme cases. But this gap is only illusory because, as we will prove in this work, a large class of nilpotent Lie algebras is closely related to the Kac-Moody Lie algebras. These last algebras could be viewed as infinite dimensional version of the semisimple Lie algebras.

Let G be a symmetric connected graph without loops. Denote by b(G) the maximum number of edges in a bipartite subgraph of G. Determination of b(G) is polynomial for planar graphs ([6], [8]); in general it is an NP-complete problem ([5]). Edwards in [1], [2] found some estimates of b(G) which give, in particular,

for a connected graph G of n vertices and m edges, where

and ﹛x﹜ denotes the smallest integer ≧ x.

We give an 0(V3) algorithm which for a given graph constructs a bipartite subgraph B with at least f(m, n) edges, yielding a short proof of Edwards’ result.

Further, we consider similar methods for obtaining some estimates for a particular case of the satisfiability problem. Let Φ be a Boolean formula of variables x1, …, xn.

A module is uniserial in case its submodules are linearly ordered by inclusion. A ring R is left (right) serial if it is a direct sum of uniserial left (right) R-modules. A ring R is serial if it is both left and right serial. It is well known that for artinian rings the property of being serial is equivalent to the finitely generated modules being a direct sum of uniserial modules [8]. Results along this line have been generalized to more arbitrary rings [6], [13].

This article is concerned with investigating rings whose indecomposable injective modules are uniserial. The following question is considered which was first posed in [4]. If an artinian ring R has all indecomposable injective modules uniserial, does this imply that R is serial? The answer is yes if R is a finite dimensional algebra over a field. In this paper it is shown, provided R modulo its radical is commutative, that R has every left indecomposable injective uniserial implies that R is right serial.

One of the fundamental results on graph coloring is the following classical theorem of Brooks.

BROOKS’ THEOREM. Suppose that k ≧ 3 and that G is a k-regular graph which does not induce a (k + 1)-clique. Then G is k-colorable.

Brooks proved his theorem in [1]; several more recent proofs have appeared in [3], [4] and [5]. All the proofs of this theorem have the common feature of applying only to finite graphs; the transition to infinite graphs can be accomplished by a very standard implementation of the Compactness Theorem (or some other equally noneffective device such as the theorem of deBruijn and Erdös [2] asserting that a graph is k-colorable if and only if each of its finite subgraphs is). Thus, it is not immediately apparent that an effective version of Brooks’ Theorem exists. It is our purpose to show, however, that the effective analogue of Brooks' Theorem is indeed true.

Throughout this paper R will be a commutative ring with 1. The purpose of this paper is to provide two new characterizations of coherent rings. The first of these characterizations shows that the class of coherent rings is precisely the class of rings for which certain duality homomorphisms are isomorphisms. And the second of these characterizations shows that the class of coherent rings is precisely the class of rings for which the endomorphism ring of any infective module is a flat module. We can show as a consequence that the endomorphism ring of a universal infective R-module is a faithfully flat R-module whenever R is a coherent ring.

S. K. Sehgal ([9], Problem 26) proposed the following question : Let A, B be rings and X an infinite cyclic group. Does AX ⋍ BX imply A ⋍ B? M. M. Parmenter and S. K. Sehgal (cf. [9], Chapter 4) proved that, under some strong assumptions concerning rings A, B, the answer is affirmative. In this paper, we show that the assumptions concerning the ring B may be omitted in the above mentioned results. Moreover, it is proven that if (AX)X ⋍ BX then AX ⋍ B for all rings A, B. If A is commutative and noetherian then a partial answer to Problem 27, [9] follows from our results.

Recently, L. Griinenfelder and M. M. Parmenter constructed nonisomorphic rings A, B for which the group rings AX, BX are isomorphic, [2], We give a new class of rings of this type. Our examples are noncommutative domains and algebras over finite fields. That also gives a negative answer to Problem 29, [9].

Let X be an arbitrary compact subset of the real line R which has at least two points. For each finite complex valued function f on X we denote by V(f; X) (and call it the weak variation of f on X) the least upper bound of the numbers ∑i|f(bi) – f(ai)| where {[ai, bi]} is any sequence of non-overlapping intervals whose end points belong to X. A function f is said to be of bounded variation (BV) on X if V(f; X) < ∞. A function f is said to be absolutely continuous (AC) on X, if given any ∈ > 0 there exists an n > 0 such that for every sequence of non-overlapping intervals {[au bi]} whose end points belong to X, the inequality

The purpose of this paper is to study three concepts that deal with the topologies on ideals of commutative integral domains. We call a domain R prime-injective if for each torsion free R-module M, and all non-zero prime ideals

commutes implies that M is injective. From [6, Theorem 1 and the technique of Example 6] this is equivalent to all non-zero ideals of R being open in the topology defined by finite products of non-zero prime ideals as a base of neighborhoods around zero.

A domain is strongly prime-injective if for each (torsion theory) topology and for ϕ the set of primes in , ϕ-injective implies -injective for torsion free modules (see [6, 8] for notation). As in the prime-injective case, this is equivalent to being the topology generated by ϕ for all topologies .

Let M be a von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space and assume that M has a separating and cyclic vector ω in . Then it can happen that M contains a proper von Neumann subalgebra N for which ω is still cyclic. Such an example was given by Kadison in [4]. He considered and acting on where is a separable Hilbert space. In fact by a result of Dixmier and Maréchal, M, M′ and N have a joint cyclic vector [3]. Also Bratteli and Haagerup constructed such an example ([2], example 4.2) to illustrate the necessity of one of the conditions in the main result of their paper. In fact this situation seems to occur rather often in quantum field theory (see [1] Section 24.2, [3] and [4]).

Let R be a ring with involution *. We denote by S, K and Z = Z(R) the symmetric, the skew and the central elements of R respectively.

In [4] Herstein defined the hypercenter T(R) of a ring R as

and he proved that in case R is without non-zero nil ideals then T(R) = Z(R).

In this paper we offer a partial extension of this result to rings with involution.

We focus our attention on the following subring of R:

(We shall write H(R) as H whenever there is no confusion as to the ring in question.)

Clearly H contains the central elements of R. Our aim is to show that in a semiprime ring R with involution which is 2 and 3-torsion free, the symmetric elements of H are central.

A useful general strategy for the construction of interesting families of vertex-transitive graphs is to begin with some family of transitive permutation groups and to construct for each group Γ in the family all graphs G whose vertex–set is the orbit V of Γ and for which Γ ≦ Aut (G), where Aut (G) denotes the automorphism group of G. For example, if we consider the family of cyclic groups 〈(0 1 … n – 1)〉 generated by cycles (0, 1 … n – 1) of length n, then the corresponding graphs are the n-vertex circulant graphs.

In this paper we consider transitive permutation groups of degree mn generated by a “rotation” ρ which is a product of m disjoint cycles of length n and by a “twisted translation” t; such that τρτ–l = ρα for some α.

There has recently been some interest in a class of limit points for Fuchsian groups now known as Garnett points [5], [8]. In this paper we show that such points are intimately connected with the structure of Dirichlet regions and the same ideas serve to show that the Ford and Dirichlet regions are merely examples of one single construction which also yields fundamental regions based at limit points (and which properly lies in the subject of inversive geometry). We examine in the general case how the region varies continuously with the construction. Finally, we consider the linear measure of the set of Garnett points.

2. Hyperbolic space. Let Δ be any open disc (or half-plane) in the extended complex plane C∞: usually Δ will be the unit disc or the upper half-plane. We may regard Δ as the hyperbolic plane in the usual way and the conformai isometries of Δ are simply the Moebius transformations of Δ onto itself.

In this paper we study intersection properties of measurable sets with positive measure in a probability measure space, or equivalently, intersection properties of open subsets on a compact space with a strictly positive measure.

The first result in this direction is due to Erdös and it is a negative solution to the problem of calibers on such spaces. In particular, under C.H., Erdös proved that Stone's space of Lebesque measurable sets of [0, 1] modulo null sets, does not have ℵ1-caliber.

Throughout this paper L will be an orthomodular lattice and the set of all maximal Boolean subalgebras, also called blocks [4], of L. For every x ∈ L, C(x) will be the set of all elements of L which commute with x. Let n ≧ 1 be a natural number. In this paper we consider the following conditions for L:

An: L has at most n blocks,

Bn: there exists a covering of L by at most n blocks,

Cn: the set ﹛C(x)| x ∈ L﹜ has at most n elements,

Dn: out of any n + 1 elements of L at least two commute.

We also consider quantified versions of these statements, namely the statements A, B, C, D defined by: A ⇔ ∃ nAn, B ⇔ ∃ nBn, C ⇔ ∃ nCn and D ⇔ ∃ nDn.

Factor-correspondences are nothing more than a way of describing isomorphisms between principal ideals in a regular ring. However, due to a remarkable decomposition theorem of M. J. Wonenburger [7, Lemma 1], they have proved to be a highly effective tool in the study of completeness properties in matrix rings over regular rings [7, Theorem 1]. Factor-correspondences also figure in the proof of D. Handelman's theorem that an ℵ0-continuous regular ring is unitregular [4, Theorem 3.2].

The aim of the present article is to sharpen the main result in [7] and to re-examine its applications to matrix rings. The basic properties of factor-correspondences are reviewed briefly for the reader's convenience.

Throughout, R denotes a regular ring (with unity).

Definition 1 (cf. [5, p. 209ff], [7, p. 212]). A right factor-correspondence in R is a right R-isomorphism φ : J → K, where J and K are principal right ideals of R (left factor-correspondences are defined dually).
