When p$p$ is inert in the quadratic imaginary field E$E$ and m<n$m<n$, unitary Shimura varieties of signature (n,m)$(n,m)$ and a hyperspecial level subgroup at p$p$, carry a natural foliationof height 1 and rank m^{2}$m^{2}$ in the tangent bundle of their special fiber S$S$. We study this foliation and show that it acquires singularities at deep Ekedahl–Oort strata, but that these singularities are resolved if we pass to a natural smooth moduli problem S^{\sharp }$S^{\sharp }$, a successive blow-up of S$S$. Over the (\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$-)ordinary locus we relate the foliation to Moonen’s generalized Serre–Tate coordinates. We study the quotient of S^{\sharp }$S^{\sharp }$ by the foliation, and identify it as the Zariski closure of the ordinary-étale locus in the special fiber S_{0}(p)$S_{0}(p)$ of a certain Shimura variety with parahoric level structure at p$p$. As a result, we get that this ‘horizontal component’ of S_{0}(p)$S_{0}(p)$, as well as its multiplicative counterpart, are non-singular (formerly they were only known to be normal and Cohen–Macaulay). We study two kinds of integral manifolds of the foliation: unitary Shimura subvarieties of signature (m,m)$(m,m)$, and a certain Ekedahl–Oort stratum that we denote S_{\text{fol}}$S_{\text{fol}}$. We conjecture that these are the only integral submanifolds.

We provide lower bounds for p$p$-adic valuations of multisums of factorial ratios which satisfy an Apéry-like recurrence relation: these include Apéry, Domb and Franel numbers, the numbers of abelian squares over a finite alphabet, and constant terms of powers of certain Laurent polynomials. In particular, we prove Beukers’ conjectures on the p$p$-adic valuation of Apéry numbers. Furthermore, we give an effective criterion for a sequence of factorial ratios to satisfy the p$p$-Lucas property for almost all primes p$p$.

Given a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over an arithmetic surface, one obtains a lisse \ell$\ell$-adic sheaf of rank two over the surface. This lisse sheaf has a number of straightforward properties: cyclotomic determinant, finite ramification, rational traces of Frobenius elements, and somewhere not potentially good reduction. We prove that any lisse sheaf of rank two possessing these properties comes from an elliptic curve.

This paper introduces a new Lagrangian surgery construction that generalizes Lalonde–Sikorav and Polterovich’s well-known construction, and combines this with Biran and Cornea’s Lagrangian cobordism formalism. With these techniques, we build a framework which both recovers several known long exact sequences (Seidel’s exact sequence, including the fixed point version and Wehrheim and Woodward’s family version) in symplectic geometry in a uniform way, and yields a partial answer to a long-term open conjecture due to Huybrechts and Thomas; this also involved a new observation which relates projective twists with surgeries.

Let S$S$ be a Noetherian scheme of finite dimension and denote by \unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\in [\unicode[STIX]{x1D7D9},\mathbb{G}_{m}]_{\mathbf{SH}(S)}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\in [\unicode[STIX]{x1D7D9},\mathbb{G}_{m}]_{\mathbf{SH}(S)}$ the (additive inverse of the) morphism corresponding to -1\in {\mathcal{O}}^{\times }(S)$-1\in {\mathcal{O}}^{\times }(S)$ . Here \mathbf{SH}(S)$\mathbf{SH}(S)$ denotes the motivic stable homotopy category. We show that the category obtained by inverting \unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ in \mathbf{SH}(S)$\mathbf{SH}(S)$ is canonically equivalent to the (simplicial) local stable homotopy category of the site S_{\text{r}\acute{\text{e}}\text{t}}$S_{\text{r}\acute{\text{e}}\text{t}}$ , by which we mean the small real étale site of S$S$ , comprised of étale schemes over S$S$ with the real étale topology. One immediate application is that \mathbf{SH}(\mathbb{R})[\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}^{-1}]$\mathbf{SH}(\mathbb{R})[\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}^{-1}]$ is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. In particular this computes all the stable homotopy sheaves of the \unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ -local sphere (over \mathbb{R}$\mathbb{R}$ ). As further applications we show that D_{\mathbb{A}^{1}}(k,\mathbb{Z}[1/2])^{-}\simeq \mathbf{DM}_{W}(k)[1/2]$D_{\mathbb{A}^{1}}(k,\mathbb{Z}[1/2])^{-}\simeq \mathbf{DM}_{W}(k)[1/2]$ (improving a result of Ananyevskiy–Levine–Panin), reprove Röndigs’ result that \text{}\underline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}}_{i}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D7D9}[1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D702},1/2])=0$\text{}\underline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}}_{i}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D7D9}[1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D702},1/2])=0$ for i=1,2$i=1,2$ and establish some new rigidity results.

We study abelian varieties and K3 surfaces with complex multiplication defined over number fields of fixed degree. We show that these varieties fall into finitely many isomorphism classes over an algebraic closure of the field of rational numbers. As an application we confirm finiteness conjectures of Shafarevich and Coleman in the CM case. In addition we prove the uniform boundedness of the Galois invariant subgroup of the geometric Brauer group for forms of a smooth projective variety satisfying the integral Mumford–Tate conjecture. When applied to K3 surfaces, this affirms a conjecture of Várilly-Alvarado in the CM case.

We extend Følner’s amenability criterion to the realm of general topological groups. Building on this, we show that a topological group G$G$ is amenable if and only if its left-translation action can be approximated in a uniform manner by amenable actions on the set  G$G$ . As applications we obtain a topological version of Whyte’s geometric solution to the von Neumann problem and give an affirmative answer to a question posed by Rosendal.

In this paper we prove a conjecture relating the Whittaker function of a certain generating function with the Whittaker function of the theta representation \unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}_{n}^{(n)}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}_{n}^{(n)}$. This enables us to establish that a certain global integral is factorizable and hence deduce the meromorphic continuation of the standard partial L$L$ function L^{S}(s,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{(n)})$L^{S}(s,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{(n)})$. In fact we prove that this partial L$L$ function has at most a simple pole at s=1$s=1$. Here, \unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{(n)}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{(n)}$ is a genuine irreducible cuspidal representation of the group \text{GL}_{r}^{(n)}(\mathbf{A})$\text{GL}_{r}^{(n)}(\mathbf{A})$.

By a theorem of Suslin, a Tor-unital (not necessarily unital) ring satisfies excision in algebraic K$K$-theory. We give a new and direct proof of Suslin’s result based on an exact sequence of categories of perfect modules. In fact, we prove a more general descent result for a pullback square of ring spectra and any localizing invariant. Our descent theorem contains not only Suslin’s result, but also Nisnevich descent of algebraic K$K$-theory for affine schemes as special cases. Moreover, the role of the Tor-unitality condition becomes very transparent.

Let \mathbb{L}\subset A\times I$\mathbb{L}\subset A\times I$ be a link in a thickened annulus. We show that its sutured annular Khovanov homology carries an action of \mathfrak{sl}_{2}(\wedge )$\mathfrak{sl}_{2}(\wedge )$, the exterior current algebra of \mathfrak{sl}_{2}$\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$. When \mathbb{L}$\mathbb{L}$ is an m$m$-framed n$n$-cable of a knot K\subset S^{3}$K\subset S^{3}$, its sutured annular Khovanov homology carries a commuting action of the symmetric group \mathfrak{S}_{n}$\mathfrak{S}_{n}$. One therefore obtains a ‘knotted’ Schur–Weyl representation that agrees with classical \mathfrak{sl}_{2}$\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$ Schur–Weyl duality when K$K$ is the Seifert-framed unknot.

Let K$K$ be the field of fractions of a local Henselian discrete valuation ring {\mathcal{O}}_{K}${\mathcal{O}}_{K}$ of characteristic zero with perfect residue field k$k$. Assuming potential semi-stable reduction, we show that an unramified Galois action on the second \ell$\ell$-adic cohomology group of a K3 surface over K$K$ implies that the surface has good reduction after a finite and unramified extension. We give examples where this unramified extension is really needed. Moreover, we give applications to good reduction after tame extensions and Kuga–Satake Abelian varieties. On our way, we settle existence and termination of certain flops in mixed characteristic, and study group actions and their quotients on models of varieties.

For a field \text{k}$\text{k}$, we prove that the i$i$th homology of the groups \operatorname{GL}_{n}(\text{k})$\operatorname{GL}_{n}(\text{k})$, \operatorname{SL}_{n}(\text{k})$\operatorname{SL}_{n}(\text{k})$, \operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\text{k})$\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\text{k})$, \operatorname{SO}_{n,n}(\text{k})$\operatorname{SO}_{n,n}(\text{k})$, and \operatorname{SO}_{n,n+1}(\text{k})$\operatorname{SO}_{n,n+1}(\text{k})$ with coefficients in their Steinberg representations vanish for n\geqslant 2i+2$n\geqslant 2i+2$.

Let n>3$n>3$, and let L$L$ be a Lagrangian embedding of \mathbb{R}^{n}$\mathbb{R}^{n}$ into the cotangent bundle T^{\ast }\mathbb{R}^{n}$T^{\ast }\mathbb{R}^{n}$ of \mathbb{R}^{n}$\mathbb{R}^{n}$ that agrees with the cotangent fiber T_{x}^{\ast }\mathbb{R}^{n}$T_{x}^{\ast }\mathbb{R}^{n}$ over a point x\neq 0$x\neq 0$ outside a compact set. Assume that L$L$ is disjoint from the cotangent fiber at the origin. The projection of L$L$ to the base extends to a map of the n$n$-sphere S^{n}$S^{n}$ into \mathbb{R}^{n}\setminus \{0\}$\mathbb{R}^{n}\setminus \{0\}$. We show that this map is homotopically trivial, answering a question of Eliashberg. We give a number of generalizations of this result, including homotopical constraints on embedded Lagrangian disks in the complement of another Lagrangian submanifold, and on two-component links of immersed Lagrangian spheres with one double point in T^{\ast }\mathbb{R}^{n}$T^{\ast }\mathbb{R}^{n}$, under suitable dimension and Maslov index hypotheses. The proofs combine techniques from Ekholm and Smith [Exact Lagrangian immersions with a single double point, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 29 (2016), 1–59] and Ekholm and Smith [Exact Lagrangian immersions with one double point revisited, Math. Ann. 358 (2014), 195–240] with symplectic field theory.

We study the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Gushel–Mukai varieties. In the derived category of such a variety, we isolate a special semiorthogonal component, which is a K3 or Enriques category according to whether the dimension of the variety is even or odd. We analyze the basic properties of this category using Hochschild homology, Hochschild cohomology, and the Grothendieck group. We study the K3 category of a Gushel–Mukai fourfold in more detail. Namely, we show this category is equivalent to the derived category of a K3 surface for a certain codimension 1 family of rational Gushel–Mukai fourfolds, and to the K3 category of a birational cubic fourfold for a certain codimension 3 family. The first of these results verifies a special case of a duality conjecture which we formulate. We discuss our results in the context of the rationality problem for Gushel–Mukai varieties, which was one of the main motivations for this work.

We combine the ideas of a Harish-Chandra–Howe local character expansion, which can be centred at an arbitrary semisimple element, and a Kim–Murnaghan asymptotic expansion, which so far has been considered only around the identity. We show that, for most smooth, irreducible representations (those containing a good, minimal K-type), Kim–Murnaghan-type asymptotic expansions are valid on explicitly defined neighbourhoods of nearly arbitrary semisimple elements. We then give an explicit, inductive recipe for computing the coefficients in an asymptotic expansion for a tame supercuspidal representation. The only additional information needed in the inductive step is a fourth root of unity, which we expect to be useful in proving stability and endoscopic-transfer identities.

We characterize the (1,1)$(1,1)$ knots in the 3-sphere and lens spaces that admit non-trivial L-space surgeries. As a corollary, 1-bridge braids in these manifolds admit non-trivial L-space surgeries. We also recover a characterization of the Berge manifold among 1-bridge braid exteriors.

In this paper we use the theory of formal moduli problems developed by Lurie in order to study the space of formal deformations of a k$k$-linear \infty$\infty$-category for a field k$k$. Our main result states that if {\mathcal{C}}${\mathcal{C}}$ is a k$k$-linear \infty$\infty$-category which has a compact generator whose groups of self-extensions vanish for sufficiently high positive degrees, then every formal deformation of {\mathcal{C}}${\mathcal{C}}$ has zero curvature and moreover admits a compact generator.

We globalize the derived version of the McKay correspondence of Bridgeland, King and Reid, proven by Kawamata in the case of abelian quotient singularities, to certain logarithmic algebraic stacks with locally free log structure. The two sides of the correspondence are given respectively by the infinite root stack and by a certain version of the valuativization (the projective limit of every possible logarithmic blow-up). Our results imply, in particular, that in good cases the category of coherent parabolic sheaves with rational weights is invariant under logarithmic blow-up, up to Morita equivalence.

We present a new construction of the p$p$ -adic local Langlands correspondence for \operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ via the patching method of Taylor–Wiles and Kisin. This construction sheds light on the relationship between the various other approaches to both the local and the global aspects of the p$p$ -adic Langlands program; in particular, it gives a new proof of many cases of the second author’s local–global compatibility theorem and relaxes a hypothesis on the local mod  p$p$ representation in that theorem.

We will develop a theory of multi-pointed non-commutative deformations of a simple collection in an abelian category, and construct relative exceptional objects and relative spherical objects in some cases. This is inspired by a work by Donovan and Wemyss.
